They met with the DPO of the police station and one of the officers at the state CID and expressed their displeasure with the level of levity with which the police at Alikia handled the case. The police had said the supposed suspect (the gardener)  'was incapable of such act'. It was a very peaceful but impactful protest. Continue to see more photos...

'On Sanusi, the Opposition and Fifth Columnists' - By Reno Omokri

Posted: 22 Feb 2014 03:09 AM PST

Article written by Reno Omokri, Special Assistant to President Jonathan on New Media. Find below
The recent suspension of the erstwhile Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria has ignited a debate on Social Media and as has become typical with many pundits, the discourse has been dominated by sentiments rather than facts.
As Sanusi has indicated that he will be challenging his suspension in court, I will not make this piece about him and recent events surrounding him. Yes, I will cite some examples of double standards as regards the approach taken by some analysts, but in my view, the matter is now best left to the courts.
What I will say however to those who are propagating the propaganda that the President suspended Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi to stop him from speaking is this: it was Sanusi's job that was suspended, not his mouth and anyone who knows him knows full well that he will not let anything come between him and a microphone.

Opposition politicians and fifth columnists have continued to pay the price for underestimating President Goodluck Jonathan's leadership abilities. They confuse analysis for paralysis.

In the first month of the year 2014 for instance, there have been several positive events that benefit everybody in Nigeria. Nigeria's economy overtook South Africa's as Africa's largest economy. Not a squeak from the opposition. Internationally renowned firm, Renaissance Capital, revealed that Nigeria is the number one destination for Foreign Direct Investment in Africa. Still not a squeak from the opposition. The United Nations officially certified Nigeria free from Guinea Worm in January. Radio silence from the opposition.

But within the same month of January, the opposition have clung on to every rumour, innuendo, gossip and careless talk that has the capacity of painting the president in bad light. And where there is no negative rumour to spread, not to be undone, they make one up!

A most embarrassing example of this 'opposition magic' was the news circulated by the opposition to the effect that former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, had upbraided the President for permitting the arrest of an APC operative who said that should the party lose elections in 2015 due to rigging (knowing the opposition, any election they lose is an election that has been rigged) "the only alternative left to get power is to take it by force; this is the reality on ground".

Eventually, it turned out that ex president Babangida had said no such thing. The statement was a fabrication which was traced to the Facebook page of the same APC official who said the taking of power by force is the only reality on the ground.

It should now be obvious to all Nigerians that these persons are setting the stage for a plan B should their plan A fail to materialize. The thing about a plan A though is that you have to have one for you to even have a fighting chance of the plan being realized, thus, an opposition that focuses on insulting the President instead of formulating a winning plan and sharing it with Nigerians obviously has no plans and therefore plans to fail.

And it is this lack of planning and coordination that fixates the attention of the opposition on attacking the President instead of his policies. Why do they do this? Those who are discerning know that the only way you can effectively attack policies is if you have alternative policies. But where you don't have alternative policies, you are left with no option but to go ad hominem.

The same people who were online attacking the President for allegedly budgeting a billion Naira for feeding at the Presidential Villa (and they deliberately suppressed the fact that hundreds of police and military officials feed at the Presidency) are today justifying the 1.257 Billion Naira that the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, under Sanusi Lamido Sanusi claimed it spent on Private Guards and lunch for police men.

The individuals who took to Social Media to attack the Presidency's proposed travel budget of 2.4 billion Naira in the 2014 Appropriation Bill are today justifying the 9.24 billion Naira spent by the CBN on training and travel expenses for the year 2012.

Thank God the Presidency did not spend even up to 1 billion on legal services. If it did, the hired social media hounds would have used this for propaganda. The question should be why are they silent on the 20 billion Naira the CBN under Sanusi claimed it spent on 'Legal and Professional Fees'?

It is because these voices are procured. There is nothing wrong in offering your services to politicians, but do not hide this fact and pass off yourself as an objective and independent activist.

Alas, many in the opposition have successfully blinded the eyes of the public to their duplicity.

I cite an elementary example of the nature of the opposition. At the beginning of the year, I devoted the first few days of 2014 to tweeting about the achievements of the Jonathan administration and projecting the positive things that were already happening in Nigeria. When I tweeted, I had expected opposition sponsored elements (and there are many on Twitter whom I have christened Politwitters) to contradict these achievements. Not unsurprisingly, they chose to insult. When I provided evidence that Nigeria's Per Capita Income in 2009 (the year before President Jonathan ascended to power) was $1091 and that this amount had improved by 70% to $1721 in 2013, what I got thrown back at me was "na that one we go chop?" or "how does that affect the price of Garri?"

They scoffed at the Jonathan administration's new National Automobile Policy, saying it was laughable to imagine that Nigeria would be a car manufacturing nation within a year. Well, Nissan has announced that their first made in Nigeria Nissan SUV would be rolled out in April. They criticized the President for declaring a State of Emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states, yet their own governors found that the emergency had significantly eroded the terrorist's ability to launch terror attacks ensuring that there was enough peace for them to visit Borno state.

And so, greeted with one success after the other of the President's policies, the opposition has realized that they cannot compete with him on the level of ideas. And what do they do?

They have carefully taken into consideration the President's personality and have come to an awareness that he is a man that would not go negative or attack personalities and their conclusion is that that is the only front on which they can overwhelm him.

But they have not reckoned with the connection the President has with ordinary Nigerians. This is a President that does not keep secrets from Nigerians. A President that is secure enough in himself and his position to allow them to dialogue without any boundaries.

In fact, from studying President Jonathan's style of leadership, I have come to the conclusion that the Jonathanian key to growing one's influence is to speak to the public in a way that makes the public want to listen to you and listen to the masses in a way that makes the masses want to speak to you. That is why Nigerians are excited about the impending National Conference. They know that their President is listening. After all, he listened to them in 2010 when they asked him not to ban the Super Eagles from international soccer tournaments. He listened to them when they overwhelmingly asked him to run in 2011. He listened to them when they said they did not want Nigeria to succumb to the practice of gay marriages.

The President even said it himself on his first Presidential Media Chat that he has a great capacity to listen to people, even if they are talking rubbish, without betraying emotion, thus communicating with his listeners that he is giving the fullness of their being his focused attention in order to understand them which does not mean that he agrees with them.

And you know what that does? It ignites the type of folksy connection that the President now enjoys with Nigerians because they know that their President seeks first to understand them before he asks them to understand him. With President Jonathan, there is no monologue or dialogue of the deaf. With him, Nigerians can always count on a dialogue of interested parties.

Nigerians know that their President will never threaten anybody, be they human being, dog or baboon. Citizens of this great nation know that the man of peace they elected to pilot their ship of state will never tell the down trodden to 'go and die'! In fact, they know that even if they are in a war torn nation thousands of miles away, their gentleman President will send planes to get them out of harm's way. They know that their President will never celebrate his birthday with 1 billion Naira. Instead, they are certain that when they are hungry, their President will ensure that the down trodden of society get billions of Naira worth of grains and food staples so that they can hunger no more. This is why the 2013 Global Hunger Index of the International Food Policy Research Institute applauded Nigeria for her significant reduction of hunger levels.

Nigerians further know that they have a philosopher king who reads regularly and who has encouraged Nigerians, through his personal initiative (The Bring Back the Book Project, launched on December 20, 2010) to read. Readers are leaders and the President doesn't just read, he also donates books to schools through the bring back the book project since he believes readers become leaders because the mind is a muscle and reading is the only gymnasium in which you can build up your mind muscle.

It is precisely this mind muscle that many of those who attack the President with ad hominem words lack. Instead of having highly defined mind muscles, they have built up their ego muscle. Alas, the worst possible combination you could ever find in men is to have a weak will and a strong ego. Unfortunately, this is the case with those who throw stones because they are attuned to destroying rather than building.

So, let them keep insulting and casting aspersions on the person of President Jonathan. Those who engage in these ad hominem attacks on the President only prove the truism that you can take the man away from the gutter but you may not be able to take the gutter away from the man.

The thing that they forget when they indulge in that type of behavior is that as Chief MKO Abiola of blessed memory said 'even if you change the name of honey it would still be sweet'!

And for those who wonder why the President does not ever respond to such opposition attacks on his personality, I would also use another proverb to try to assuage their wonderment. A man who is carrying an elephant on his head has no need to squash an ant with his toe.

Regards,
Reno

You don port? (Continuation of See Finish Syndrome) by Charlyboy

Posted: 21 Feb 2014 11:01 PM PST

A part 2 of Charly Boy's first article on See Finish Syndrome. Find it here. Check on it below..
When I published my piece about the death of desire in marriage/relationships ("See Finish Syndrome") I didn't expect the kind of feedback I got on that matter, hummm see gobe!
It was clear to me that the marriage institution in Nigeria is in a big problem. Ninety percent of the overwhelming phone calls and emails were from angry, lonely, disgruntled and confused wives. It was then it hit me that millions of homes and marriage relationships are going through a very bad patch, wives are growing very disenchanted with their husbands and their relationship. Before I did the piece (see finish) apart from experiencing it personally, I have heard and seen so much sadness in too many homes that made me swear and ever determined not to allow my marriage be caught by the "See Finish" bug.
From the mails and the phone calls I received, it was clear to me that many wives whilst still in their relationship, DON PORT. They have emotionally moved on engaging in hot sizzling extra-marital affair. The number is alarming, their reasons are as enlightening as it is revealing and I must add, I learnt quite a lot from all the sad stories I heard and read. Thank God for the opportunity, I will always share with my readers some of my personal experiences, trusting that in coming clean I will also learn from the mistake of others. Long story short, it is for me therapeutic.

Many wives these days "DON PORT", alarming unconfirmed statistic show a large number who have grown disinterested in their marital sex, while husbands are busy reassuring themselves that their wives are still "The Good Girl" they married. Hummmmmm. For many who wrote in and I spoke to, swore that they never thought they were the "Type" that would ever cheat, but now they are far too deep into it and never want to stop. I begin to see a pattern in all of this confusion, if we don't develop an accurate understanding of our wives; very soon, marriages will become old fashion because so many people are becoming disillusioned with the whole institution. In all of this, so many men are stuck with their societal beliefs about females that are grossly distorted and completely erroneous. Wahala dey my people.
The following is a letter from one of my numerous readers, since she doesn't mind me sharing it with you, I don't mind either…

Hello AreaFada,
I am writing this because there is a serious issue I'm struggling with, I desperately need to share it with someone. I felt I could open up to you and not be judged having followed you for long. I don't mind if you use this mail on your several platforms, i believe i speak for many too.

I got married in the 90's to perhaps the most wonderful man on earth and together, we have one of the best families anyone would wish to have. My husband and I are doing very well on our jobs and our kids are excellent both at home and at school.

We have no reason to suspect each other or anyone, there is nothing like lack of trust in this relationship. We live in each other's body and so, privy to what the other is doing per time and we are very supportive of each other, at the same time, being each other's worst critic because we always are on the look-out for areas to improve. We're absolutely loyal and faithful to each other, nothing less than a 100%.

This is a summary of the home I had until 3years ago.
I met a man in the course of my job who came along with a new information and completely opened my eyes to a new feeling.

Ours wasn't a chance meeting, we worked together on a project so we exchanged phone numbers and since then he has always called. That was the beginning o, he would not let me rest, calling and texting nice stuff almost by the minute. Before long, I started looking forward to this. We started bonding like you can never imagine. In a very short space of time, we became an item. This means spending more time with him........at the expense of my family time.

I didn't start sleeping with him o, we kept things off SEX Lane and surprisingly, he didn't make a fuss. Of course, each time we saw, he wanted to get it on but as soon as I told him 'No', he just let me be without getting angry. At least not obviously.

This singular act, I think, is the clincher that made me very fond of him because back home, the only thing that caused quarrels between my gentleman husband and I was the fact that he made too much fuss each time I refused him sex, when I'm tired or not just in the mood. He gets angry to a convulsive state and I used to wonder if it was running away.

For more than a year of seeing each other, my now boyfriend (OMG, am I writing this?), asked for sex and I felt obliged. He had been very understanding, so why don't I do him this honors. So I agreed. He was so gentle and alluring, handled me the way no man had ever done me before. I felt like a woman, perhaps for the very first time, allowing me experience orgasm before him, Wow, is this heaven or what? After which he gave me my 1st bath as an adult. I had never seen that before. It's a season of firsts for me and I was loving every second of it,
Please pardon me, I crave your indulgence, I needed to open this up to someone and I'm glad I found your platform. Thank you. Just hear me out, that's all I ask.

I no longer have time for anybody and anything else. I get infuriated by the smallest things, making mountains out of moll hills. Any small thing, I resign to my basement and ask that no one disturbs me. My basement, which hitherto was a dungeon of not-frequently-used items in the house, is now my get-away, to be alone with my lover, who incidentally is also married. My loyalty to my family is brutally divided or is it totally eroded? My husband has been and remains a good man, i doubt if he ever has been unfaithful to me in the close to twenty years of our marriage and I know he doesn't deserve this. At least, one good turn they say....

I know, I have a feeling this is bad, very bad, but I'm enjoying this new information. Imagine, it's been well over two years since we started sleeping with each other and I can't even find a word for the kind of sex we share. My boyfriend just knows how to keep it ever new and fresh, every single time.

The strange thing is my husband doesn't even have a clue I've been cheating. Even if the thought crosses his mind, he would probably think something is wrong with him 'upstairs' for thinking such thoughts. AreaFada, please don't advise me to stop o, just counsel me on the best way you think I can keep the groove on without breaking eggs...how to have the best of my now two worlds.
My happiness is very important, am sexually alive with my boyfriend.
Thank you for your time, may God bless you.

British couple conned into believing they'd had a baby by Nigerian doctor

Posted: 21 Feb 2014 02:41 PM PST

A British couple spent 10 years trying to conceive. Then the husband's friend recommended herbal programme and introduced them to Dr Cletus Okolo in Lagos who they paid £4,500 for bags of herbs to help them conceive. The herbs made the woman swell up as if pregnant. Read full story below...

From Daily Mail
A couple's desperation for a baby led them into a programme of bogus herbal treatments that convinced them she was pregnant and had given birth - until DNA tests proved it was a lie. The British couple, who have not been named, returned from the specialist hospital in Nigeria to bring up their 'daughter' in Britain when they were arrested, and the little girl seized.
They had gone to a doctor in Lagos, Nigeria, to spend more than £4,500 on 'herbs' in a last ditch attempt to conceive after a decade of trying. Miraculously, the substances they ate seemed to mimic the effects of pregnancy. Even a London GP believed the symptoms, issuing a maternity leave certificate.
Nine months later, Dr Cletus Okolo staged a charade labour, during which the mother was drugged. At the end, she was handed what she believed to be her daughter.

But when they arrived back home, with little documentation, social workers were suspicious and eventually arrested the couple, taking the little girl into care.

Ten months later, they still cannot accept that the child they brought home from Nigeria is not their own, although DNA tests have shown conclusively that they are not the biological parents.

Now, in a unique decision by top family judge Mrs Justice Hogg, the 'intelligent, educated, hard working' couple has been cleared the of allegations that they were knowing parties to the fraud.
The judge said that, despite 10 years of trying surgery, laser treatment and IVF, the couple, both British citizens, had failed to conceive a child.

However, in 2010, the father bumped into a friend from university who told of a couple who had had twins after undergoing 'some herbal treatment' in Nigeria.

They leaped at the chance and travelled to Nigeria where a Dr Cletus Okolo prescribed a course of herbal treatments he claimed would do the trick.

On returning to Britain and taking the herbs, the mother noticed her body changing.
Her face, arms and belly all swelled up and even a 'kindly and well-meaning' local GP took the symptoms to mean she was seven months pregnant.
The doctor signed off a maternity certificate and the couple travelled back to Nigeria.
At the clinic near Lagos they handed over £4,500 and the mother was given a brown liquid to drink before entering what she thought was a delivery room.
The father waited in the corridor outside and, after few minutes, heard a baby cry.

He entered the room to find the baby girl - referred to in court only as 'A' - lying on the bed beside his semi-conscious wife.
He was shown a fake umbilical cord being cut and given a placenta to carry away in a plastic bag.
Afterwards, Dr Okolo wrote: 'Treatment successful, patient delivered of a baby girl. All fees paid. God's doing'.
That was the only document that accompanied the birth and, when the couple flew home with their 'daughter', social workers were quickly on the alert.
They were later arrested and the baby girl was taken into police protection. To the couple's 'considerable dismay and shock', DNA testing proved that the little girl was not their child.

Having waited so long for a baby, the couple refused accept the truth.
They insisted 'the combination of spiritual and herbal treatments was so powerful as to be able to change DNA'.

But the judge said: 'There is no evidence before me to say that the result of the DNA testing was wrong or likely to be wrong. I do not accept the explanation of the parents.
'On that basis I have to accept the validity of the results and find that the baby is not the biological child of the putative parents.'

Social workers from the London Borough of Hillingdon, as well as the child's court-appointed guardian, argued that the couple were 'knowing parties to an elaborate fraud and charade upon the British immigration authorities and now parties to an attempted fraud on the Court.'
They said the couple's account of the birth was 'littered with inconsistency' and implausibly embellished.

The judge conceded: 'At first blush, the immediate reaction of the ordinary man on the proverbial Clapham omnibus would no doubt be, "don't be daft, it's a fraud, they knew it".'

However, noting the 'enormous difficulty' the couple had had in conceiving a child, Mrs Justice Hogg took them at their word when they said they would 'never seek to buy a baby'.
She added: 'Despite their education and intelligence, they are struggling with the result of the DNA test. Both of them say they still believe that A is their natural child.

'In the end, having considered all the evidence...I am driven to conclude that in some way they allowed themselves to be duped by fraudsters.

'They so much wanted a baby....they allowed themselves to fall under the spell of the herbalists, believing what was said to the mother and acting faithfully upon the instructions given to them.
'Contrary to the submissions of the local authority and guardian I do not find that the parents were wilfully and knowingly involved with or parties to a wrongful removal of A from her mother, or that they cynically 'bought' a baby.'

The judge concluded: 'What is clear to me, having found that she is not their biological child but the child of another mother and father, and having been removed from her mother very soon after her birth, is that A certainly is the victim of wrongdoing and illegality, and very possibly her mother as well.

'The fact remains that A is effectively an orphan. There is noone in this country who has parental responsibility for her and no information as to her birth, parentage, or background.'

Mrs Justice Hogg directed a further hearing to decide where the little girl's best interests lie. Her finding that the couple were innocent dupes will greatly improve their chances of persuading the court that A's future should be with them.
