Ugandan president succumbs to pressure, signs anti-gay bill into law

Posted: 24 Feb 2014 06:21 AM PST

After months of refusing to sign the anti-gay bill which Uganda's lawmakers passed in December 2013, (Read that here) President Yoweri Museveni, today succumbed to pressure from within his country and signed the anti-gay bill into law.

He signed the bill at his official residence at Entebbe, near the capital Kampala, in front of govt officials, journalists and a team of Ugandan scientists who found no genetic basis for homosexuality, one of the reasons why he finally consented to signing the bill.

The anti-gay law criminalizes all acts of homosexually in Uganda and calls for first-time homosexual offenders to face a 14 years jail penalty. Continuous Sexual engagement by two homosexuals which involves a minor, disabled person or anyone with HIV AIDS attracts a life sentence.

British Council holds interactive session on graduate employment

Posted: 24 Feb 2014 05:51 AM PST

The British Council will on Wednesday, 26 February, hold an interactive session with stakeholders in the Education sector to discuss graduate employability and inclusive development with a view to advancing effective policy to address unemployment challenges. Continue...

The Forum, which will attract participants from the academia, employers of labour, young people and policy makers, will deliberate on research findings from Nigeria's current education policies and statistics, according to a statement by the British Council Communication Manager, Mr. Desmond Omovie.

It said existing research shows that despite global attention to higher education and employability, there is a surprisingly weak evidence base. "Little is known about the causes of poor graduate outcomes and what universities can do to improve their offering," the statement said.

It announced that the British Council has commissioned a three-year study exploring the role universities can play in promoting graduate employability in five countries: Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa and the UK. The research is led by the Institute of Education, University of London, in partnership with Kenyatta University, Kenya; University of the Free State, South Africa; University of Education, Winneba, Ghana; and University of Ibadan and University of Lagos, Nigeria.

The research will find out, among others,

·      Why there is graduate unemployment?
Indications are that there are a range of factors, but causal links are not clearly established.

·      What exactly are the levels of knowledge/skills/etc. of graduates?
There are few rigorous gauges of student learning, meaning that assessments of graduate attributes and work readiness are largely impressionistic.

·     How effective are university-based interventions?
Where there are policies and initiatives in place to enhance the quality of teaching and learning, or initiatives targeted at enhancing employability such as entrepreneurship courses, impact on students is largely unknown.

The research will assess the overall situation in the selected countries and identify recent initiatives that have sought to address the challenges. The project will also assess the key role of university partnerships – with a particular focus on how UK universities might collaborate with universities in Sub-Saharan Africa to improve university education.

Singer Seun Oni aka Saeon has spoken for the first time about her relationship with Uti Nwachukwu. She says they are in love and it's no publicity stunt.
"I don't like to put my personal business out there. I have known Uti for a while and he was in my only video. I met him prior to shooting the video because he helped me to bring some of the things I used in the video from England. We started talking, hanging out and then this. We are in love and he is a very honest person and also genuine. People would always say things about him which obviously are not true but that would not stop him from being him. He is God-fearing, very funny and of course, good-looking. This affair is no publicity stunt; even though I know Uti is a big brand and I am only an emerging brand." Saeon tells Punch

CNN cancelling Piers Morgan Tonight after a crash in ratings

Posted: 24 Feb 2014 03:56 AM PST

After three years of running Piers Morgan Live, CNN has confirmed plans to cancel the prime time show due to poor ratings. According to the New York Times, the host of the show Piers Morgan, who stepped up as the replacement for Larry King (who ran for 25 years), said last week that he and CNN president Jeff Zucker had discussed the show's failure to connect to the network's audience and had decided to cancel it. The last shows will be aired in March.
"It's been a painful period and lately we have taken a bath in the ratings. Look, I am a British guy debating American cultural issues, including guns, which has been very polarizing, and there is no doubt that there are many in the audience who are tired of me banging on about it. That's run its course and Jeff and I have been talking for some time about different ways of using me. I think I can credibly do news and the ratings reflect that, but it is not really the show that I set out to do," Morgan continued. "There are all kinds of people who can do news here. I'd like to do work — interviews with big celebrities and powerful people — that is better suited to what I do well and fit with what Jeff is trying to do with the network." - Piers Morgan told the Times, "

Boko Haram men attack 2 villages in Borno + Govt seals border with cameroon

Posted: 24 Feb 2014 02:31 AM PST

Boko Haram members yesterday Sunday Feb. 23rd attacked two villages, Mairari village of Konduga LGA and Izge village in Gwoza LGA in Borno state killing many people.

This is the second time the sect men are attacking Izge village. They had attacked the village on the 16th of February killing 63 people.  In this recent attack, the men came at about 2am, chanting war songs as they killed elderly people in the village and burnt down all the standing buildings in the village. All the men, women and youths fled the village immediately they heard the sect men coming.
In Mairari village, the men arrived at about 12noon, killing 2 people, burning 10 houses and vehicles

There were rumours that the federal government was planning to dissolve the democratic government in Borno state and bring in a military administrator to help stop the continuous attack by the sect men on the state but this has been refuted by the federal government.

Meanwhile the Nigerian government sealed a portion of its North Eastern border with Cameroon yesterday to block the movement of criminal groups from entering into the country
