| Posted: 19 Jun 2016 12:28 PM PDT  Nwokocha-Ahaaiwe had dragged President Buhari before the court, arguing that he did not meet the educational requirement to contest for President of Nigeria. Nwokocha-Ahaaiwe alleged that President Buhari did not sit for the Cambridge West African School Certificate WASC) in 1961 as he claimed. According to Vanguard, Garba Shehu, while reacting to Nwokocha's recent press interviews, explained that "it is unfair for a lawyer who is a litigant to a case in court to go out of his way to hijack the power of a Judge by declaring the President guilty of what he is accused of. Newspaper pages are not alternative courts where a lawyer can declare anybody guilty of anything when the court has not formally given a definitive judgment on an issue before it. The two-pages interview splashed on pages 56-57 of ThisDay edition of Saturday June 11th breaches a lawyer's ethical code and we hope that the court and the Bar Association will take notice of this. Any lawyer that sincerely believes in judicial process and the rights of other parties to a case would not have engaged in the inappropriate and unprofessional practice of trial by media, especially a situation where Nwokocha openly declared the President guilty when the court didn't make that declaration. Shehu noted that "gag orders emerged in the United States on account of lawyers' inappropriate conduct on trying and convicting people on the pages of newspapers or the court of public opinion. He added that "free speech is not synonymous with recklessness and wanton abuse of the rights other parties to a case in court." He also said that "The litigant's unabashed claim that he was a card-carrying member of the opposition PDP which lost power in the last election clearly indicates a scheme that seeks power by circumventing the democratic process of elections." Malam Garba Shehu said "if Nwokocha has not stopped his unfair and professionally inappropriate abuse of free speech, the President's competent team of lawyers will seek the instrumentality of the law in dealing with his unethical actions. You cannot be a litigant and be a Judge at the same time." |
| "Star Trek" actor Anton Yelchin dies in car accident at age 27 Posted: 19 Jun 2016 12:22 PM PDT  According to TMZ, Yelchin was pinned to a brick mailbox by his own car in what appears to be a freak accident. His friends became alarmed because he was supposed to meet them hours earlier for a rehearsal. They went to his San Fernado Valley home at around 1am and found him pinned between his car and a brick mailbox, which was attached to a security gate.  Yelchin was the only child of Russian parents. His family emigrated to the United States when Yelchin was a baby. Yelchin starred in 2006's Alpha Dog before he was cast in J.J. Abram's version of the Star Trek series. He acted in the next Star Trek installment, Star Trek Beyond, which premieres in summer 2016 as well as the upcoming film Rememory, and the recently-released Green Room with Patrick Stewart. |

| Herdsmen kill six in Benue community Posted: 19 Jun 2016 09:52 AM PDT  The herdsmen stormed the village in the night, attacking the community members with machetes and other dangerous weapons. A member of the House of Representatives that represents Logo State Constituency, Hon. Terna-Kester Kyenge, told the Sun that he received six mutilated corpses "I received six mutilated corpses and addressed hundreds of displaced persons including women and children. I condemn the attack as gruesome and barbaric. I, however, call for restraint on the part of my people while I urge the federal and state governments to intervene in arresting the culprits and provide relief materials to the displaced people." Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Moses Yamu, said the corpses of the deceased victims had been deposited at the morgue of the General Hospital, Ugbah. "You know, these Fulanis always strike in a guerrilla manner. Once they strike, they leave the area. Security has been beefed up in the area and the people can now return to their homes," Yamu said |
| Photos: Four Rapid Response Squad operatives escape death Posted: 19 Jun 2016 09:52 AM PDT  The RRS men were on duty point patrolling along Ogudu-Alapere axis, inspecting the Light Up Lagos Project facilities, when the accident occurred at about 12:06 am on Sunday. According to the information gathered at the scene of accident, RRS men were driving when a KIA Rio with lone occupant on a high speed rammed into them from behind. An eyewitness who was at the scene of the incident and later conveyed the injured to Lagos State Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja for treatment. "The RRS vehicle was going slowly on the road because they were monitoring the Light Up Lagos Project facilities when the KIA Rio on top speed from Lagos Island towards Alapere rammed into the RRS Ford car with registration number RRS 068 LA, thereby bundling it and the officers into a nearby ditch. Four officers of the RRS were seriously injured including the driver of the car in the accident. As at the time of writing this report, three of the RRS operatives have been discharged from the hospital, while one along with the driver of the speeding vehicle is expected to be discharge later in the day. Further investigation into the identity of the KIA Rio driver revealed that he just started the car hire services on Friday after leaving the services of a truck driving firm. It would be recalled that vandals have been ceaselessly tampering with Light Up Lagos cables before the commissioning of the project in April. One Lucky Udeagwu was arrested with a 35 meter long cable meant for the project in Ogudu. In May, RRS operatives again arrested another suspect, Obaji Christopher, for cutting the project cable at the Ogudu axis. These informed the constant monitoring of the area by the operatives, particularly at night. |
