Obasanjo donates a chimpanzee named 'Patience' to a non-profit animal conservation organisation Posted: 04 May 2016 12:54 PM PDT Pandrillus, a conservation organisation based in Nigeria and Cameroun disclosed that former President Olusegun Obasanjo donated a chimpazee named 'Patience' to them. The organization, with a location in Calabar, Cross Rivers Stae, are dedicated to promoting the survial of the highly endangered Drill (Mandrillus leucopheus) and providing safe haven for orphaned chimpazees. They shared this photo on their official Facebook page today, writing: "Seen here at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library Wildlife Park in Abeokuta - from left: Peter, Liza with Patience, and Mr. President. As President of Nigeria, he visited Drill Ranch in 2001, and made a follow up visit in 2011. President Obasanjo recognises the special care needs of chimpanzees and therefore decided to place 3 year old Patience with Pandrillus so she can grow up in the forest as part of the large chimpanzee group at Drill Ranch Afi Mountain. Thank you, Mr. President! Patience is a fantastic chimpanzee who has been well cared for by the staff of the OOPL Wildlife Park. Once she has completed her medical screening in Calabar, she will join the group at the newly completed Nigerian Chimpanzee Center - located at Drill Ranch Afi Mountain in Boki LGA of Cross River State. Pandrillus thanks Mr. President and his staff for their logistical support and hospitality during Peter and Liza's working visit. We also thank Air Peace for carrying all three back to Calabar. Welcome, Patience!" |

Posted: 04 May 2016 12:11 PM PDT A 15-year-old boy who suffered from the rare genetic disorder called progeria, died at a hospital in Karimnagar in Telangana, India, on Tuesday, May 3. Nihal Shrinivas Bitla was instrumental in creating awareness about the disorder in India, and was the face of the Progeria Research Foundation's campaign to detect undiagnosed children living in India. Hutchinson–Gilford progeria syndrome, commonly known as progeria, is an extremely rare condition where a child ages eight times faster than normal and hence has a much shorter life span than children their age. Such children usually die from a heart attack or stroke. Nihal and his family, who live in Bhiwandi, were in Telangana to attend a wedding. As he was severely dehydrated, the teen was admitted to a local hospital. Doctors suspect that Nihal's hardened arteries, a condition common in the elderly that restricts blood flow, contributed to his sudden death. Dr Parag Tamhankar from National Institute for Research in Reproductive Health, who had diagnosed Nihal when he was 10, said the boy appeared like a 60-year-old despite his age. Nihal was brought to him with complaints of stiffness of bones and wrinkles all over his face. In 2014, Nihal along with three-year-old Ishan, another child with Progeria from Satara, went to Boston, US, to undergo a clinical trial of a cancer drug meant to slow accelerated ageing. In December 2015, Bollywood actor and producer Aamir Khan made Nihal's dream come true by meeting him. The youngster who received gifts from Khan said he made him feel "optimistic" about life. Aamir Khan met Bitla following a Facebook post, where it was mentioned that the latter wanted to meet him. After their meeting, Nihal posted on Facebook photos writing: "Thank you Aamir uncle for making my dream come true. Your Taare Zameen Par always inspired me to face adverse situations and I was always knew that one day I will meet you." Source: Hindustan Times Photo credit: Facebook |
Photo: Metropolitan Police make two new arrests for the 2011 murder of Adeniyi Shode Posted: 04 May 2016 12:02 PM PDT Police investigating the murder of a young man five years ago has made two new arrests. The arrests today, Wednesday May 4, were made in the investigation into the fatal stabbing of Adeniyi Lateef Shode (known as Aden or Enda - pictured above) in Northoit in 2011. Detectives from the Met's Homicide and Major Crime Command (HMCC) arrested a 23-year-old man and a 24-year-old man on suspicion of murder. They were arrested at addresses in north London by officers acting upon fresh information regarding the killing of the 21-year-old. Following this new development, officers continue to appeal for witnesses and information and are offering a reward of up to £20,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest and prosecution of the person or persons responsible. Adeniyi, of Edgware, was discovered collapsed close to the junction of Rowdell Road, Ealing Road, and Kensington Road, at approximately 20:50hrs on 2 May 2011. He had suffered stab injuries. He was taken to St Mary's Hospital and died of his injuries later that night. His mother Antonia Francis said in an earlier appeal: "All our family thinks about Aden every day. We remember his laugh and smile and he always remains in our thoughts. "It still hurts us to think that whoever killed Aden is still out there and we pray that it doesn't happen to anyone else's family. I would ask anyone who may be able to help us to speak to the police. If you are not happy talking to the police then please tell someone and get them to pass the information on. What is important is that the police can track down whoever took my son from us." Detective Inspector Garry Moncrieff, from the Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: "Although five years have passed, officers remain committed to bringing Aden's killers to justice. Allegiances may have changed over this time and those who may know who is responsible for Aden's death may not have the same sense of duty to those involved. We strongly believe that people out there may know who murdered Aden and why. Anyone with any detail, no matter how minor, is urged to contact police. It may provide closure to Aden's family who want to see justice done." On 6 May 2011 a man [A - 20yrs] and two women [B - 22yrs; C - 18yrs] from the Northolt area were arrested in Berkshire in connection with the murder. On 9 May 2011 a man [D - 19 ys] from the Northolt area was arrested in connection with the murder. They were subsequently released; no one has ever been charged with Aden's murder. |

Posted: 04 May 2016 09:54 AM PDT Over the weekend, "The State of Lagos Housing Market Report - Volume 2" was launched by the Roland Igbinoba Real Foundation for Housing and Urban Development, RIRFHUD amidst all relevant industry stakeholders. (Photo above - Ooni of Ife holding the report). The report, which was formally presented to the public at an event held at the Grand Ballroom, Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos outlines many indices in the residential real estate market in Lagos. For example, the report states that Lagos state housing deficit is 2.9million units, and that 71% of Lagosians default in their rents. Furthermore, as many as 66 percent of respondents surveyed across the length and breadth of the city-state, disclosed that they yet preferred traditional brick and mortar constructions to houses made with alternative building technologies. Entitled "The State of Lagos Housing Market Report, Vol 2", it is a sequel to the first edition that had been published and launched in 2009.Delivering his address as royal father of the Day, the Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, who is himself a notable player in the Lagos and Nigerian housing market called on stakeholders in the industry to cooperate more amongst themselves and with government to ensure that Nigeria moves from housing construction to housing manufacturing, affirming that this was the only way the present collosal housing deficit in the country which is put at about 20million can be reversed. On his part, Lagos Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, represented by the State Commissioner for Housing, Honorable Gbolahan Lawal disclosed that the state had presently commenced a rent-to-occupy scheme to enable more of the teeming numbers of its population be able to access and afford houses of their own.Later in the event, the Ooni of Ife and the Executive Governor (represented by Honorable Gbolahan Lawal) unveiled the report. Speaking on how the report will impact the economy, Newton Jibunoh, chairman of the foundation noted that through the publication of the book, they have given support to a fledgling sector of the economy, thereby contributing to the process of effecting a small change. Running through a brief of the report that was said to have taken four years (2012 to 2016) to gather, Roland Igbinobia, the founder of RIRFHUD began with the Lagos HOMS project, which he says has about 10,000 units, both completed and uncompleted. He spoke about the Nigeria Mortgage Refinance Company (NMRC); the amount so far accessed from the NMRC and mortgage institutions involved. "We looked at the impact of the NMRC because there has been a lot of conversation around the setting up of this secondary mortgage institution. About N1.8billion has been accessed from the NMRC. These comprise Imperial Homes, N970million; Home base Mortgage Bank, N492million, and Trust Bond Mortgage Bank, 300million. There is a lot to be tapped from NMRC. We just feel that a lot needs to be done." Giving further insight into the content of the research work, Igbinobia noted: "We decided to look at luxury residential market, this became important because if you look at Bourdillon, Eko Atlantic City, Church gate, we were taken aback as to why investors are doing luxury real estate when there is a huge clamour for low and medium income housing." "Interestingly, what we found out is that people are moving away from the 1000sqm and 1,500sqm of houses to some three bedrooms four bedrooms luxury fully serviced apartment. You see people moving from the Ikoyi/Banana Island areas to do some off plan projects for luxury development. Ooni Of Ife making a speech at the event. Others on Stage are Hon. Posted: 04 May 2016 08:53 AM PDT Murtaza Ahmadi, the 5 year old child whose picture of him wearing a plastic bag jersey with Lionel Messi's name and number went viral early this year, has been forced into exile as his family fear he could be kidnapped by Talibans. Now I want you to invite me so I can come and meet you." Then In February, UNICEF confirmed Murtaza had been sent a signed Argentina shirt by the World Player of the Year. According to the boy's father, talibans in the area thought Messi must have also sent the boy some money alongside the signed jersey, so his family have had to relocate him amid fears he could be kidnapped and then Lionel Messi contacted to pay a ransom. Mohammad Arif Ahmadi told the BBC, "A few days ago I got a call from a local gangster," he said. He thought that since my son had received these T-shirts from Messi that maybe he also got money and asked for his share." The family have moved to neighbouring Pakistan after selling their possessions and are currently in Quetta. Source : BBC |

Posted: 04 May 2016 08:14 AM PDT Khloé has revealed all the traits she looks for in a man as well as dating deal breakers.
For the 31-year-old reality TV star, an awesome personality is far more important than looks. In particular, she values a great sense of humor, and someone who continuously proves their ambition. "It sounds corny, but I 've dated really cute guys with absolutely no substance and it just doesn't work. The second we get on the phone and try to have a conversation, it's like, 'Okay, this isn't doing it for me" She loved being with a man with goofy personality. "I like a man with a sense of humour. I mreally silly and goofy, so I need someone who can appreciate that and serve it back to me. But I dont want him to be too out-there and so quirky that we don't share the same kind of jokes,LOL" On what turns her on, she wrote: "Honestly, to me, the sexiest qualities in a man are drive and ambition. I want someone who has structure to his days- he doesn't necessarily have to be on my schedule, but if he's working towards a goal and is driven, it's a turn-on." |
