Arab woman places an advert praising her African nanny for the love and care she gave to her son (Photos)

Posted: 11 Sep 2016 01:30 PM PDT

For a long time, African domestic workers in the Middle East been subjected to slavery and cruelty by their employers. We often hear and see heartbreaking and horrifying stories of ladies being raped, beaten and subjected to all beastly acts in the Middle East countries as they seek to make a living and help their families back home. But one Arab woman from Qatar, has warmed up the hearts of Africans, especially Kenyans and indeed the world by buying a newspaper advertising space and appreciated her Kenyan nanny as her two years in Qatar is coming to an end.

Mariam al Rashdi placed an advert in the Gulf Times Community newspaper appreciating Elizabeth Kamoca for taking care of her son who is suffering from Autism, a mental condition, present from early childhood, characterized by difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and in using language and abstract concepts
"This is a note from me, as a mother of a young man with special needs to say thanks for being an angel that God sent to help my son and support him. Thanks for loving him, accepting him, understanding him, and help him develop by teaching him. I am sure Kenya and the entire world will be proud of you one day. God will reward you for taking the best care of my son," Mariam said in the advert.
Kenyans in Qatar were so moved that they created a Facebook page named Elizabeth and Karim and showered praise on the family and the nanny for being kind to each other.

When Mariam Al Rashdi's son Karim was diagnosed with autism, it took her years to find him the appropriate support and care. Now, the Omani mother of five has set up her own center in Qatar for children with special needs – complete with field trips to popular Doha attractions.
"It is time for a change (in society)," she told Doha News during a recent interview. "It is no longer acceptable to hide children away. Things are changing and we will be part of that."

Bag of rice may sell for N40,000 by December- Minister of state for Agriculture says

Posted: 11 Sep 2016 01:22 PM PDT

Minister of State for Agriculture, Lokpobiri Heinekein says if Nigeria fails to begin the process of producing its own rice, the cost of a bag of rice may shoot up to about N40,000 by December this year. He said this at a town hall meeting in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state this yesterday September 10th.
"For your information, we spend about $22bn a year importing food into Nigeria. We know how many more dollars they bought and that is why you see the price of rice going up. Price of rice was may be N12,000 some months ago, but it is now about N26,000 and if we don't start producing, by December it could be N40,000.
Rice matures in three months. So, this is a wake up call for Bayelsa people to take the four farms we have seriously. The federal government has four farms in the state in our records. The average land you see in Bayelsa can grow rice, so the colonial masters were not wrong in their assessment when they said Niger Delta could feed not only Nigerian but also the entire West Africa sub-region. Unfortunately, agriculture till today, is not a priority of the Niger Delta as far as the state governments are concerned because of oil"he said

Present recession is as a result of failure in the past to plan and save for difficult times- President Buhari

Posted: 11 Sep 2016 01:12 PM PDT

President Buhari has said that the recent economic recession being experienced is as a result of cumulative effects of worldwide economic downturn and failure in the past to plan and save for difficult times. According to him, it is impossible to separate the present from the past to appreciate the extent to which mistakes of the past are affecting everyday life today. President Buhari said this in his Sallah message to Nigerians. Read the full text below
Fellow Compatriots, as you celebrate the Eid-El-Kabir, I salute your steadfastness in spite of the difficult economic times the country is going through. The lessons of the Eid are piety and sacrifice and, my dear brothers and sisters, you have exhibited these in equal measure.
The present recession is as a result of cumulative effects of worldwide economic downturn and failure in the past to plan and save for difficult times. It is impossible to separate the present from the past to appreciate the extent to which mistakes of the past are affecting everyday life today.

I assure you that this administration is working round the clock to remove the hardships the country is going through. Rail and road constructions, projects in the housing sector, support for farmers and for small and medium scale industries, youth and women's empowerment programmes, support for revival of industries are all designed to reinvigorate the economy and enhance living standards of ordinary people.
We are getting security right. We are stopping corruption in its tracks and we will get the economy right by the Grace of God.

I enjoin Muslims to live by the dictates of Islam, to keep good relationships with their Christian brothers and sisters and as patriots to maintain the spirit of the Nigerian nation.
I wish everyone happy holidays.

Saudi-bound pilgrim drug trafficker arrested by NDLEA excretes final pellets of cocaine

Posted: 11 Sep 2016 03:23 AM PDT

The Saudi-bound female pilgrim who was arrested last week by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has excreted the final wraps of cocaine, according to Sahara Reporters.

55-year-old Basira Iyabo from Kwara State was headed to Medina to perform the annual pilgrimage when she was arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, during the outward screening of passengers on an Emirates Airlines flight to Dubai.

She excreted seventy-six (76) pellets of cocaine and was then placed under observation until she expelled all the injested drugs totaling 82 wraps.  NDLEA spokesman, Mitchell Ofoyeju, who confirmed the report said the married mother of three excreted the last wraps of the substance over the weekend while in their custody. The total weight of drugs excreted by the suspect was 931 grams.

Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah, the anti-narcotics boss, described the action of the suspect as shameful and stated that the drug trafficker would be sanctioned in line with anti-narcotics laws.

"It is a shameful and discreditable act for a 55 years old mother who is going on a holy pilgrimage to ingest narcotics. This is very shocking and a clear indication of her inability to effectively discharge parental responsibilities. The agency shall invoke the powers of the law against her and others caught indulging in production or trafficking of drugs."

Also commenting on the arrest, NDLEA Commander at the Abuja airport, Hamisu Lawan, said arrangements had been concluded for her prosecution in the law court. If the suspect had been caught in Saudi Arabia, she would have been publicly executed according to the law of the land.

In her confessional statement, the trader who sells cosmetics at Dosumu Market in Lagos owned up to the crime and also provided investigators with useful information. She said that she desired to expand her business in Dosunmu Market and her sponsors, who she declined to mention, offered her the sum of N1 million to courier the drug to Saudi Arabia.

"I am a trader in Lagos, married with three children. I wanted to expand my cosmetic business, but I have no money. My sponsor offered to foot my expenses to Saudi on pilgrimage. This was how I got involved in the act. I was excited until the issue of drugs was introduced. I wanted to decline, but it was late. Besides, I was offered one N1 million, which I accepted. I swallowed the drugs in Lagos and took a flight to Abuja on my way to Medina, but I was caught in the process"

Mikel says he spent over $30000 helping to organise logistics at Rio 2016

Posted: 11 Sep 2016 03:20 AM PDT

The last is yet to be heard of Nigeria's chaotic preparations for Rio 2016 as team captain, Mikel Obi has revealed just how much he was involved behind the scenes. Speaking with goal.com the Chelsea midfielder said:
"I think if we talk about the money that I put into the team I think it was more than [£30,000] but we just had to do it.
"I said to myself, 'I won't let this happen. If I can help, I'll try to help'. Sometimes there was no food, sometimes there was no pitch to train on, there was no bus to go to the training ground. So all of this was what me and the coach had to figure out, and get money together.
"I came to the camp. I sat down with the boys in Atlanta and I could see the frustration, the pain and the anger. Their aim was to play in the Olympics, their goal was to play in the Olympics.
"And for me being there and seeing what they are going through, they are young boys, they want to start their career and someone in the ministry is trying to crush that dream."

On the now infamous incident which saw the team arrive Rio with just hours to spare after haphazard travel arrangements he said: "There was just no flight provided by the Nigerian ministry. "We planned to leave three or four days before the tournament, but we ended up leaving the day of our first game. It was a difficult one. I don't think I have ever seen something like that before, it was crazy.

"[After our last minute flight] we got to the hotel, dropped our bags, grabbed some sandwiches, something to eat. A little bit of food. Then headed straight back to the stadium because we hadn't even done our accreditations then, so we had to go there and wait in the line, do our accreditation.
"It was absolutely hectic. I don't know how we managed to go onto the pitch and win that game, it was absolutely mind blowing."

He also spoke of his pride at winning bronze, Nigeria's only medal at the competition.
"Sometimes I wear my medal around the house, it gets my missus jealous," he joked as he showed off his medal. "The kids love playing with the medal. I am sure one day they will know what this really means."

Still on the problems the team faced en route Olympic glory he said: "We had lots of problems outside the pitch, but I always told the boys that you shouldn't let that affect what we came here to do. We still want to achieve what we came here to do. We still have to represent our country and play for ourselves and our family and the people of Nigeria.

"So if the ministry don't want to take responsibility, we have to make sure we play for ourselves and our country. The boys understand that and we made sure they went along with my message that I kept putting across to them every single day and we managed to achieve what we did achieve."
