The generator, the airport authority claims, has packed up. How can our generator not have back up? So now people are in perpetual darkness as they wait for the airport authority to do something. Sad!

President Mugabe unveils giant statue of himself, unimpressed Zimbabweans mocks it on Twitter

Posted: 12 Sep 2016 12:01 PM PDT

President Robert Mugabe unveiled the statue at his official residence in Harare last Friday and Zimbabweans were not impressed.

The statue, made by a famous Zimbabwean sculptor was widely criticized on social media, with people questioning the sculptor's motives. Some even suggested it was a reaction to being forced to make the status while many attacked the sculptor accusing him of a poor job.

However, Dominic Benhura insisted his statue of the President was not intended to mock him. The sculptor who has exhibited his work across the world, told the state-owed Herald newspaper that "honestly, no one would abuse such an opportunity."

"That sculpture was never meant to look exactly as the President's image. I do not do exact figures. This is the style I have mastered. My collectors can identify my pieces when they see them anywhere in the world because I chose to be different and that is my signature" Mr Benhura explains

Higher Education Minister Jonathan Moyo defended the sculpture while Mugabe praised it. He was quoted as saying that he was so grateful that the statue stimulated "a kind of wonder, love, a kind of appreciation and satisfaction"

Photos: Nigerian migrant gives birth aboard search and rescue ship in the Mediteranean Sea

Posted: 12 Sep 2016 09:48 AM PDT

A healthy baby boy was born today, September 12th, on board MV Aquarius, a search and rescue vessel run in partnership between MSF and SOS Mediterranee.

He was born at 7:00 am ship's time in international waters to Nigerian parents, who have named him Newman Otas. His parents, Otas and Faith, and older brothers Victory, seven, and Rollres, five, were rescued from an overcrowded rubber boat 24 hours earlier.

Currently 392 people are on board after two rubber boats were rescued and one transfer accepted: 155 people on board are under 18, 141 of them  are traveling alone – without a parent or guardian accompanying them. There are 11 children under five and now four babies under a year.

"I was very stressed on the rubber boat, sitting on the floor of the boat with the other women and children" Faith recounts. "Panicking that I would go into labour. I could feel my baby moving, he would move down and then move back up again. I had been having contractions for three days."

MSF Midwife Jonquil Nicholl, who delivered the baby said:  "A very normal birth in dangerously abnormal conditions. I am filled with horror at the thought of what would have happened if this baby had arrived 24 hours earlier; in that unseaworthy rubber boat, with fuel on the bottom where the women sit, crammed in with no space to move, at the mercy of the sea,"

And 48 hours previously they were waiting on a beach in Libya not knowing what was ahead of them.

"How can this still this still happen in 2016? That families, vulnerable people, pregnant women, tiny babies and unborn babies are forced to risk their lives in the Mediterranean Sea when they should be receiving assistance and protection" she added.

Australian woman captures scary footage of 2 huge pythons fighting outside her dining room window

Australian homeowner Cheryl Judd, captured footage of two huge male pythons battling each other for the right to mate with a female just outside her dining room window. She wrote on Facebook:
"We had a great view outside my dining room window. One snake kept falling and would climb the trees and back onto to roof to have another go. He did this three times."
One commenter, David Cranswick said they were not really fighting:
"These carpet pythons are not fighting, this is their mating courtship ceremony. I've looked after carpet pythons for many years, these movements are typical of courtship. Male pythons don't fight with each other over territory or females unlike humans."

'Anti-corruption war built on fairness & Justice' - Pres. Buhari says

Posted: 12 Sep 2016 09:32 AM PDT

President Buhari says patriotic Nigerians have nothing to fear in the fight against corruption as his administration will ensure justice and fairness to all. Speaking to journalists in Daura after attending Eid prayers to celebrate Eid El Kabir, President Buhari said those who abuse public trust will face justice, in addition to returning their stolen assets to the nation's coffers.

He thanked Nigerians for supporting the Federal Government policies, programmes and actions aimed at improving security, revamping the economy and combating the fight against corruption.
''We should thank God this year, the reports I'm getting, which is very pleasing, is that we will have a bumper harvest this year. I want Nigerians to realise that what this government inherited after 16 years of the PDP government was no savings, no infrastructure, no power, no rail, no road and no security. Nigerians can see what we have done on Boko Haram and what we are doing to resolve the problem in the Niger Delta. Before the elections, we identified three major problems confronting our country. The first is security; we need to sufficiently secure our country to manage it well. The second is economy, especially job for the youths and fighting corruption which is continuous. For the youths, graduates and non-graduates who are interested in agriculture, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with the CBN are doing something to provide employment for them,'' he said.

Delta State police rescue 12 kidnapped children, arrest pastor and 'Madam Cash' who ran notorious child abduction ring

Posted: 12 Sep 2016 08:10 AM PDT

Delta State Police Command Police has rescued 12 kidnapped children and arrested some child traffickers.

One Abigail Nwakama also known as 'Madam Cash' and a  popular radio preacher and founder of Gospel Fire Army Ministry, Nkwele-Ogidi, Anambra State, Chinedu Strongson, were arrested alongside 8 others for operating a kidnapping ring.

Police paraded Mrs. Nwakama and the cleric before journalists on Saturday, September 10th at the police headquarters, Asaba, Delta State, along with 43 other criminals arrested for kidnapping, robbery, murder, cultism and car theft.

Revealing details of her notorious kidnapping syndicate that abducted children before selling them into slavery, police sources said that she stole a one-year-old girl, identified as Fatimah Yahaya, from her mother after paying her mother N3,000. It was learned that Mrs. Nwakama then sold the young girl to the 48-year-old  pastor for N400,000.

According to the state police commissioner, Zana Ibrahim, 12 stolen children were rescued from the pastor, confirming that he allegedly paid N400,000 for each child sold to him.

The pastor denied any involvement in child trafficking, claiming that he only help in paying school fees for children. Mother of the kidnapped girl, Aisha Yahaya reported how two ladies came to her house in Asaba posing as police detectives sent by her husband now serving at Ogwashi Uku prisons.

She followed them to a junction where they met Mrs Nwakama who gave her N3,500 to alleviate her poverty and asked her to buy clothes for her daughter. In the process, the said child was allegedly stolen by the syndicate, prompting her to raise the alarm which led to the arrest of the two ladies.

Based on the report, the commissioner said detectives swung into action and arrested one Onyinye Nwakama, daughter of Madam Cash, at a drinking bar in Asaba. Also arrested was Ifeoma Anyadike, (32) at Okpanam before they led detectives to Ogidi where the pastor was arrested.

Others arrested from different locations are David Ikesinachi; Ebere Edwin, Adaeze Enyi and Chike Agwunenu. Two of the rescued children, the commissioner of police said, had been handed over to their parents while the remaining were kept at an orphanage in Asaba pending identification by their families.
