Church of England bishop becomes first cleric to declare he is in a gay relationship Posted: 03 Sep 2016 01:13 PM PDT Nicolas Chamberlain, the Bishop of Grantham has become the first Church of England bishop to publicly declare that he is gay and in a relationship. The Bishop who said his sexuality has not been a secret was forced to go public after a newspaper threatened to reveal his orientation. Speaking with the Guardian in an exclusive interview he said: "People know I'm gay, but it's not the first thing I'd say to anyone. Sexuality is part of who I am, but it's my ministry that I want to focus on." He disclosed that his superiors including the archbishop of Canterbury who is the leader of the Anglican church worldwide knew of his sexuality. "I was myself. Those making the appointment knew about my sexual identity" he said. Chamberlain said he adhered to church guidelines, under which gay clergy must be celibate and are not permitted to marry. In the appointments process, "We explored what it would mean for me as a bishop to be living within those guidelines," he said. In a statement, Welby said: "I am and have been fully aware of Bishop Nick's long-term, committed relationship. His appointment as bishop of Grantham was made on the basis of his skills and calling to serve the church in the diocese of Lincoln. He lives within the bishops' guidelines and his sexuality is completely irrelevant to his office." Christopher Lowson, the senior diocesan Bishop of Lincoln who appointed Chamberlain said in a letter to parishes in his diocese: "I am satisfied now, as I was at the time of his appointment, that Bishop Nicholas fully understands, and lives by, the House of Bishops' guidance on issues in human sexuality. For me, and for those who assisted in his appointment, the fact that Bishop Nicholas is gay is not, and has never been, a determining factor." Chamberlain said he had been with his partner for many years. "It is faithful, loving, we are like-minded, we enjoy each other's company and we share each other's life," he said. Members of the C of E's College of Bishops will meet this month to discuss the next stage of the church's discussions about sexuality and all eyes will be on Chamberlain. "I will speak [at the meeting], and this part of me will be known. I hope I'll be able to be a standard-bearer for all people as a gay man. And I really hope that I'll be able to help us move on beyond matters of sexuality," he said. "It's not to say this isn't an important matter – I'm not brushing it aside," he added. But the church needed to focus on issues such as deprivation, inequality and refugees, he said. Asked whether other bishops might follow his lead in openly declaring their sexuality, he said: "I really can only speak for myself. If I'm an encouragement to others, that would be great." Chamberlain said the C of E was "still at the beginning of a process of learning" about issues of sexuality, describing it as a struggle. "I don't think we've reached a position where the church is going to be marrying same-sex couples," he said. He declined to express objections to the C of E's celibacy rule for gay clergy. "My observation of human beings over the years has shown me how much variety there is in the way people express their relationships. Physical expression is not for everyone." He hoped to be "judged by my actions as a parish priest, a bishop – and by the Lord ultimately. My sexual identity is part of who I am, but it's the ministry that matters." In a statement, the C of E said: "The church has said for some time that it would be unjust to exclude from consideration for the episcopate anyone seeking to live fully in conformity with the church's teaching on sexual ethics or other areas of personal life and discipline." The church of England has been divided in recent years over it's stand on homosexuality, LGBT groups have pilloried the institution for its insistence that marriage as ordained by God is meant to be between a man and a woman. This week, a group of C of E conservative evangelical parishes held a meeting to discuss their response to what they claimed to be the watering-down of the authority of the Bible on the issue of sexuality, in what was billed as potentially the first step towards a breakaway from the Anglican church. |

Nigeria 1-0 Tanzania: Kelechi Iheanacho, Mikel Obi & Manuli dazzle (Match report) Posted: 03 Sep 2016 12:20 PM PDT Nigeria defeated Tanzania 1-0 on Saturday evening after a high tempo 2017 African Nations qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio stadium, Uyo. It was an opportunity for new foreign technical adviser Gernot Rohr to see his new squad & evaluate them ahead of Russia 2018 qualifiers as Nigeria had already missed out on AFCON 2017 qualification so the matched bared no significance to the Super Eagles. The Super Eagles attack was dominated by Premier League stars – Mikel, Victor Moses (Chelsea), Odion Ighalo (Watford), Kelechi Iheanacho (Manchester City) and Ahmed Musa (Leicester City) Iheanacho had an early chance in the second minute but fluffed his lines at the beginning of the match after Tanzania started the kick off. Nigeria had a free kick in the 5th minute and after some indecision as to who will take it between Mikel Obi and Victor Moses , Moses flashed the free kick into the side netting. Ahmed Musa then dribbled through two defenders and gave a stylish through pass to Moses which he wasted by playing a lazy shot to the Tanzanian goalkeeper Aishi Manuli. Nigeria were still pressing in the first ten minutes of the match and Ahmed Musa after a cut back from Mikel Obi made a lazy shot at the goalkeeper. The Nigerian team were showing some energy but Ahmed Musa, Ighalo and Moses weren't showing enough finesse in front of goal. The Tanzanians gave the Super Eagles backline a scare but the ruffle was quickly shut out by Carl Ikeme and Leon Balogun. In the 24th minute, Iheanacho had a chance in front of goal and chose precision rather than power as his curling left footed shot was punched away by Manuli. Nigeria continued to dominate and Mikel gave a wonderful pass to Moses who shot for the sky, as he wasted another precious opportunity to open the scoreline. Iheanacho gave a pass to Odion Ighalo, who had been wasteful up till this moment and the Ajegunle product while trying to dribble through a defendergot dispossesed. All the while Mikel kept showing his class with well timed and creatively executed passes, but the front line kept wasting the ball. Victor Moses with some good footwork made his way through the near post but the ball was saved by goalkeeper Manuli. Victor Moses after a through ball wasted the ball again despite Iheanacho being open. Nigeria had good intentions, pace on the wings and imagination but the decison making in the final third was lacking. Ighalo in the 38th minute made his best effort in the match after he side-dummied a Tanzanian defender and shot at the goalkeeper resulting in a corner kick. Tanzania came forward but couldn't negotiate past Leon Balogun and Carl Ikeme. Tanzania's goalkeeper Manuli pulled another save from Ighalo, Balogun made a wonderful interception at Nigeria's back-line, then Manuli made another wonderful save from Iheanacho's left footed shot. At the cusp of halftime the stadium erupted after some wonderful interplay and mazy run between Victor Moses and Nigeria's left back to which Moses shot over the net. It was still a wonder as to how the Super Eagles were still being held to a draw by Tanzania as the Tanzanians were there for the taking. Half Time! Nigeria 0-0 Tanzania The second half started with still the same storyline. Everyone had a shot at goal- from Iheanacho to Onazi, Moses and Ighalo. Mikel had three chances, one with his head and two with his legs but Manuli- definitely the man of the match made save upon save upon save. Mikel, who dis everything he could to score in this match, was substituted for Wilfred Ndidi at the hour mark as Nigeria. Ndidi moved to defensive midfield while Onazi went to take up Mikel Obi's position. Rohr will be hoping he gets his strikers to learn how to score during matches as Zambia, Cameroon and Algeria are totally different oppositions and will not give Nigeria as much space as Tanzania did in this match. Ighalo was finally substituted for Ideye as coach Rohr aimed for more potency in front of goal. After so much hustle and bustle, this was it. Goal!!! Man City's Kelechi Iheancho finally broke the Manuli curse at the 78th minute. The left footed striker took the ball from the corner flag area and passed through a defender before shooting a powerfully placed shot into the net. The Uyo stadium came alive! This was what Nigerians had been yearning for. The Tanzanians started pressing forward, hoping to open up space and attack the Nigerians all to no avail. The partnership between William Troost Ekong and Leon balogun should also be commended, as they showed so much composure and tenacity at the backline. Nigeria's new coach Gernot Rohr will be hoping that this win is the beginning of so many other wins as the Super Eagles aim for Russia 2018. Photo credit: Super Sports |
Posted: 03 Sep 2016 10:09 AM PDT The Lagos State Government on Saturday said owners of the buildings demolished in Ikoyi were duly served with contravention, removal and quit notices before the exercise was carried out, just as it vowed to intensify efforts to rid the State of illegal structures. In a statement issued by the Commissioner, Ministry of Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, the Government said it had noted with dismay, the flagrant disobedience of Building Regulations, and has therefore resolved to ensure removal of all structures that are in contravention of the law. Speaking against the backdrop of recent demolition of some illegal structures in Ikoyi, Ayorinde reiterated Government's determination to rid the State of Illegal developments saying "In our effort to maintain a sustainable, organized, liveable and friendly environment, the Government will not renege on its declared stance of zero tolerance for structures and properties without development permit or approved building plans. He also warned that all those who choose to erect illegal structures in violation of our laws in order to take advantage of third parties will not only have those structures removed but will also be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. According to the Commissioner, the buildings in question were situated in an area originally designated as residential area, but the developers unilaterally and without recourse to the State Government commenced development of industrial and commercial concerns in these locations thereby distorting the master plan of the area; causing environmental nuisance, traffic snarls and more importantly a security threat to the neighbourhood. On the allegation that the buildings were not duly served with necessary contravention, stop work and removal notices, the Commissioner said that the State Government will not succumb to blackmail in any form. "We have documentary evidence of service of all statutory notices, the buildings were also marked with the X red oxide to also call the attention of the owners to physical planning contraventions". Ayorinde added, "Having served the Statutory Contravention Notices on the offending structures and when owners of such structures failed to remove them within the statutory notice period, we were compelled to remove such structures". This Government is committed to following due process and will strictly enforce provisions of the law on this subject matter. He said the State Government is desirous of restoring the original master plan of all residential areas in the State, adding, "Arbitrary location of kiosks, illegal parking lots, unapproved mechanic workshops, roadside restaurants and other unplanned commercial centres have contributed in no small way to distorting physical planning designs of the State". While reiterating Government's commitment to "a safe, clean and prosperous Lagos", the Commissioner warned that the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development as the organ of government saddled with the responsibility of ensuring compliance with town planning laws, will not allow the State's planning aesthetics to be destroyed by people who have no regard for beauty, serenity, law and order. While expressing the determination of the current administration to restore the original master plan of the State, he vowed to do everything possible to ensure that people observe the various planning laws and regulations in every part of the State. "This is an exercise in progress; it is an on-going operation to sanitize the environment, we have also developed strategies to prevent re-occurrences of illegal developments and for the sustenance of a cleaner Lagos," he said. Ayorinde, however, called on those who have structures within the Right of Way of Public Utilities to remove them or face the full wrath of the law. He further urged the general public to ensure that they obtain necessary planning permits before embarking on any renovation, construction or other forms of development, adding that the public should also avail themselves of the provisions of the Lagos State Physical Planning and Development Regulations.
