PDP defectors should not expect automatic appointment in my govt - Buhari Posted: 12 Apr 2015 06:03 AM PDT Addressing newsmen after casting his vote at his polling unit in Daura Katsina state yesterday April 11th, President-elect Gen Buhari is quoted as saying by Tribune that PDP defectors should not expect automatic appointment as ministers in his government. "I have no fears of PDP defectors. The people who are defecting will only have influence in their constituencies. Since their constituencies are now controlled by the APC, their influence is, therefore, limited. I hope the people that are defecting will accept the fact that they are joining the people who succeeded. So, I don't think they will just come and say they want to be ministers next month, simply because they were ministers before." he said |
After 49 years, mother reunites with the daughter she thought died at birth Posted: 12 Apr 2015 05:59 AM PDT A mother & daughter have re-united after a bizarre and unexplained hospital mishap kept them apart for almost 50 years, NYDailyNews reports... Zella Jackson Price, 76, a gospel in singer in the St. Louis suburb Olivette, says she was told 49 years ago that her daughter had died in a hospital hours after being born. But on Thursday, Price met that very alive daughter, Melanie Diane Gilmore. A nurse had told Jackson-Price that her baby, who was three months premature and weighed less than one pound, died shortly after birth. "She came up to me three hours later and said your baby passed," Jackson-Price told the NYDN. Gilmore was subsequently adopted by another family, and believed that her birth mother gave her up. When she was 20, Gilmore's adoptive mother died, and she moved to Oregon to live with a relative. There, she began searching for her biological mother. Gilmore's son and twin daughters helped search for their grandmother last year, using Facebook to track Jackson-Price down and a DNA test to confirm the match. Results came back in March, and it was "a 99.9997% match," Gilmore's daughter wrote in the description section of a YouTube video documenting the reunion. Gilmore, who's been deaf since the age of 3, was given the news by her children via sign language. Then she was introduced to her mother for the first time in a video message "God has given me everything the devil has taken from me," Jackson-Price said "I'm getting it back. I'm getting my baby back." Jackson-Price expressed plans to investigate whether the hospital mishap was an accident or something more nefarious. "I'm still kinda in shock. I don't know what we'll find out, what error, what was done, I don't know what we'll find out," she told the Daily News. "As soon as we get over the excitement of being together and everything, I will seek a lawyer." Homer G. Phillips Hospital closed in 1979, and was converted into senior living apartments in 2003. INEC releases statement on State Elections Posted: 12 Apr 2015 04:20 AM PDT Press statement from INEC. Read below... According to preliminary reports, 88.9 % of polling units opened for accreditation between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. across the country. Only 5.2 % were yet to open as of 1 pm. Also, 73 % of the polling units had commenced voting by 2.30 p.m. The process of accreditation with Smart Card Readers was also successful in a majority of the polling units. Initial challenges were recorded in Edo and Abia states, but the technical teams deployed to support the states were able to resolve the issues in a timely manner. Overall, many parts of the country remained relatively peaceful during the elections. Some states, however, recorded a significant number of violent incidents, the most affected being Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ebonyi and Ondo States. INEC's records show that there were 66 reports of violent incidents targeted at polling units, the Commission's officials, voters and election materials. These were in Rivers State (16 incidents), Ondo (8), Cross River and Ebonyi (6 each), Akwa Ibom (5) Bayelsa (4), Lagos and Kaduna (3 each), Jigawa, Enugu, Ekiti and Osun (2 each), Katsina, Plateau, Kogi, Abia, Imo, Kano and Ogun (1 each). The Commission is investigating these incidents and will do everything within in its powers to bring culprits to justice. INEC commends Nigerians for once again demonstrating their resolve and commitment to participate in the electoral process and by doing so, contributing to deepening democracy in our country. The Commission calls on every citizen to maintain the peace as the results of the Governorship and State Assembly elections are being processed, and to accept the official outcomes. It would like to emphasize that winners can only emerge after collation of the official results and on the basis of the requirements prescribed by the legal framework. Any aggrieved persons or groups are encouraged to seek redress at the Tribunals. INEC would also like to remind all stakeholders that the process is not yet completed and urges restraint in their comments, as we strive to bring this process to an orderly, peaceful and credible conclusion. Rapper Nelly arrested in Tennessee on drug charges Posted: 12 Apr 2015 01:11 AM PDT Oh no! Rapper Nelly was arrested yesterday morning April 11th on felony drug charges in Tennessee after a state trooper stopped his tour bus for not having the correct ID stickers. The troopers noticed the smell of marijuana when they stopped the bus and then proceeded to search it. The search uncovered marijuana, meth, as well as multiple handguns. Nelly and one of the other five people in the bus were immediately arrested. See the official statement about the arrest from the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security after the cut... A Tennessee state trooper arrested internationally known hip-hop artist "Nelly" on felony drug charges in Putnam County on Saturday morning. Nelly, whose real name is Cornell Haynes, was charged with felony possession of drugs, simple possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. At approximately 9:20 a.m. on Saturday, Trooper Michael Loftis stopped a Prevost motor coach bus on Interstate 40 near the 275 mile marker for failure to display a U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and International Fuel Tax Association (IFTA) sticker on the vehicle. The investigating trooper planned to conduct an inspection on the bus when he noticed an odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle. Trooper Loftis, assisted by THP Sgt. Donald Jennings, then conducted a probable cause search of the bus. The troopers discovered in the sleeper area a plastic bag that contained five colored crystal-type rocks that tested positive for methamphetamine, as well as a small amount of marijuana and other drug paraphernalia. Further investigation revealed approximately 100 small Ziploc bags that are commonly associated with the sale of narcotics and numerous handguns, including a gold-plated 50-caliber Desert Eagle pistol, a 45-caliber Tarus pistol, and a 500 magnum Smith and Wesson. The bus was occupied by six subjects, one of whom was identified as Brian Jones, 44, of St. Louis, Missouri. Mr. Jones, a convicted felon, was also in possession of a handgun and was charged accordingly. Nelly, 40, also of St. Louis, Missouri and Jones, who were traveling to St. Louis when the traffic stop occurred, were transported to the Putnam County Jail. The weapons and drugs were seized in accordance with state law. |

Stay back and form a formidable party - APC tells defecting PDP members Posted: 11 Apr 2015 01:43 PM PDT John Oyegun, the national chairman of APC said today Saturday April 11th that the gale of defections by politicians was not good for Nigeria's political development. Mr. Oyegun, who spoke to newsmen in Benin shortly after casting his vote, advised those defecting to the winning party to rather form a formidable opposition to enrich the nation's democracy. "Many opposition party members have defected to APC just because they lost out, that is not good for political development. One would have advised that opposition members should stay where they are, and form a formidable opposition party." Mr. Oyegun said.He described the governorship and houses of assembly elections as "the most decent, orderly and peaceful" ever conducted in Edo. Meanwhile, the APC national chairman won the election in his polling unit. Oredo East: Ward 2, Unit 1 Polling Unit, the first time since 1991 when he was elected governor. (NAN) |
