Zoning of National Assembly offices: APC leaders' meeting end in deadlock Posted: 24 Apr 2015 09:43 AM PDT A meeting of top members of APC convened to resolve all disagreements bordering on the zoning of top offices in the incoming National Assembly ended in a deadlock on at the Rivers state Governors lodge Abuja on Wednesday April 22nd. According to Vanguard, the meeting came to a deadlock after the leaders failed to reach a consensus on where to zone the office of the speaker of the House of Representatives. The members were divided between zoning it to the North-East and South-West. The leaders however agreed on the zoning of the office of Senate President to the North-Central and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, to the South-East. Sources say outgoing minority leader, Femi Gbajabiamila and Yakubu Dogara are being nominated for either speaker or deputy speaker of the House of Representatives. In attendance at the meeting were President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd); Vice-President-elect, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo; party leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; governors-elect, senators-elect as well as some top executive officers of the party. |
These shoes grow five sizes to keep up with the kids who wear them Posted: 24 Apr 2015 09:40 AM PDT According to a report on Mashable, a charity worker named Kenton Lee has dreamt up a simple fix to an age-old problem: the constant need to buy new shoes for kids who outgrow them just months later. He and his team invented sandals that match the pace of children's growth via a system of buckles, buttons and pegs, which expand the shoes in length by up to five sizes. Built to last at least five years, they are made out of durable leather, metal snaps and compressed rubber. In much of the developed world, the clothing needs of fast-growing kids can significantly impact a family's budget; but for those in impoverished areas who can't afford to buy shoes, the consequences can be far more severe. Without protection for their feet, these children are susceptible to infections from cuts, scrapes and soil-borne parasites that burrow into the skin, according to Lee's website The Show That Grows. Lee was inspired to create the sandals while working at an orphanage in Nairobi, Kenya in 2007. He was struck by the sight of a small girl whose shoes were so small that the ends had to be sheared off so her toes could poke out, according to The Shoe That Grows. Looking around, Lee quickly realized the girl's plight was not uncommon. "So right there, spur of the moment, I thought, 'Wouldn't it be nice if there was a pair of shoes that could adjust and expand their size? A pair of shoes that could grow?'" Lee told KPTV Lee and his team shopped the idea around to various established shoe companies without success, before they partnered with Gary Pitman. The footwear veteran previously worked at Nike and Adidas, but left to start his own shoe design company, according to KPTV. It took Pitman several months to develop Lee's design into a finished product, and he used a 3D printer to model foot sizes. The Shoe That Grows sells the sandals for $10 per pair, and packs them into duffel bags that hold 50 each; these bags are then shipped to one of seven countries around the world. Lee told BuzzFeed that so far about 2,500 kids have received the shoes. Source: Mashable/KPTV |

Posted: 24 Apr 2015 08:02 AM PDT You will remember that the momentum of using cards started a few years ago when people started getting used to ATMs. Well, the story is changing very fast these days. Since the Central Bank of Nigeria effectively introduced the cashless policy in 2012, we have seen more usage of cards not just on ATMs but on POS. Needless to say that the bullion vans and sirens have disappeared and people are now transferring money electronically through NIBSS Instant Payment and NIBSS Electronic Funds Transfer. The volume of transactions per day under these different electronic payment systems is very encouraging, at least it proves that it works and Nigerians are getting value in terms of convenience, security and speed of concluding financial transactions. While the payments landscape has evolved rapidly over the past few years, due to a flurry of innovation and regulation, expansive growth in electronic payments and the inclusion of new market entrants, industry research indicates that the next decade will yield a period of even faster growth. The future promises to deliver a rapidly changing payments landscape as increasing convergence, integration and ecommerce and mobile technology radically change the shape of the payments market place. This is why the Central Bank of Nigeria and Nigeria Interbank Settlement Systems (NIBSS) have come up with the Electronic Payment Incentive Scheme, to reward bank customers that are using cards and other epayment channels as well as merchants and their sales persons that are pushing the frontiers of epayment by promoting and encouraging the use of cards and POS at their outlets. CBN CardExpo 2015 which comes up from the 23rd -25th of June, will focus greatly on the future payment vision, the assumption that underlines the vision and how innovation will drive the process. The conference and exhibition will also focus on new users as well as the service delivery strategy that will deliver the future of payments. At this Conference and Exhibition, top card and epayment experts will be sharing inside strategies on positioning and enhancing your card business to ensure your spot in the Rapidly evolving Card Ecosystem. Merchants, Issuers, Financial Institutions, and Solution Provider. Hear first-hand, in rapid fire panel debates, a holistic idea exchange around the industry's and most pressing issues on Cards, Mobile payment, MPOS, NFC, BVN, Square Me, ATM, EFT, eGovernment payments at federal and state levels, Utility payments etc. At this event, we will be rewarding bank customers that frequently use their cards on POS. Merchants and sales persons who promote and encourage the use of card on POS will also be rewarded with various cash prizes under the CBN Electronic Payment Incentive Scheme (EPIS). We have also put together Demo Sessions for pitches by young developers of brilliant "out of the box" payment technologies who will have the opportunity to present and demonstrate their innovative solutions. N250,000 will be won by each of the best four epayment demo pitchers.Only solutions that have not been launched or in the market will qualify to be presented at our pitches. CardExpo Africa Exhibition continues its tradition of showcasing the most exciting developments in the payment sector. With a variety of new innovative technologies, it has never been more important to keep pace with industry developments. With banks, cards scheme and newer entrants all vying their place at the centre of the ecosystem. This must attend event will provide insightful takeaways from the industry. Why attend: • Hear about new technologies which could transform your business • Meet with industry pioneers to discuss how they see the sector advancing • Learn about how new entrants plan to grow their market share • Network with major players and see what your competitors are working on |

Five Ways to Improve your Saving Habit Posted: 24 Apr 2015 07:20 AM PDT The first step to improving your savings habit is to honestly assess your financial health. After all, you can't solve a problem if you don't know what it is. Improving your savings habit will help you reach your short- and long- term financial goals. Before you can save, you need to develop a clear picture of your expenses and your income. This will help you work out if you are spending more than you actually earn and help you to fix the situation by reducing your expenses – remember it really is easier to cut down expenses than it is to make more money. No matter what you're saving for – whether it's for retirement, a new home or a new car, or just to cultivate a habit of savings - it's important to start early. When it comes to saving, the best time to start is now. There are five (5) steps that will help you start saving: • First, come up with a personal budget or monthly spending plan. This will help you plan for expenses, reduce excess spending, save for future goals, have money put aside for emergencies and prioritize savings. Separate your income and expenses but make sure that you update your budget regularly as these figures may change from time to time. Your income will include things like your salary, bonuses, retirement income (if you have retired), income from rents and things like that. Your expenses may be food and water, housing, clothes, transportation, education, utilities (such as phone bills, electricity, internet and such) and personal (such as hair and personal care). Once you have estimated how much you will earn and spend, subtract your expenses from your income. If you have money left over, you can then decide how to spend, save or invest this left over money. If your expenses are more than your income, however, you must adjust your budget by reducing your expenses. • Second, set realistic savings goals. Know what it is you are saving for and how much you need to save to achieve that goal. Make sure that the amount you are saving is meaningful but doable. • Three, pay attention to your lifestyle; manage lifestyle inflation. Most of us will spend more money if we have more money to spend. As we move up in our careers, we tend to spend more. This is known as lifestyle inflation. Lifestyle inflation works against our ability to save and invest. You must remember that every extra naira spent now, is less money in the bank. People tend to spend more because they want to be and appear like other people – neighbours, friends, even family. But you must remember that these people may owe a lot of money for them to live the kind of life that they live. You need to decide whether you want to join these people in a life of debt or save to secure our families' futures and our retirement. • Fourthly, understand the difference between needs and wants. "Needs" are things that you must have in order to survive, such as food, shelter, clothing, healthcare, transportation and such. On the other hand, "wants" are things you would like to have, but that you do not necessarily need for survival. Sometimes it is difficult, especially these days, to tell the difference between the two but you must honestly do this if you want to manage your spending and save. Lastly, explore savings accounts. The easiest way to save is to put the money in a savings account. Try as much as possible not to touch the money you save. To make sure that you do not touch this money you can put it in a high yield savings or investment account that has higher interest rates. Since your money must stay in the account for a period of time, this will help you to resist any temptation to touch it. These tips are really simple and if you stick to them, you should see an improvement in your savings. Who rocked the denim look? Linda Ikeji vs Laura Ikeji Posted: 24 Apr 2015 05:42 AM PDT So this morning my sister Laura showed me these photos of her rocking the denim look yesterday and said "Linda, this is how to rock denim-on-denim. You made yours look like a jumpsuit". I didn't agree, I told her mine was better. Two people jumped into the argument and said Laura's denim look was better. So, I decided to bring it here to the people's court. Whose denim look is better? Before you type your comment, remember which Ikeji sister gives you news on this blog. My people.*wink* |
