A girls hostel at the University of Uyo caught fire this afternoon. It started from a room and spread to two other rooms. Thankfully the fire was contained by man-o-war and fire service before it spread to more rooms. And more thankful is that no life was lost. The cause of the sudden fire is yet to be known. Islamic State leaders claim to be living in luxury in a vast mansion seized from a billionaire Arab sheikh. The jihadi group's social media sites posted photos of the spectacular mansion, under the headline: 'A castle for the tyrants of Qatar in Palmyra'.

Aerial snapshots show sprawling gardens surrounding the mansion, in the heart of the Syrian desert. It is claimed that the Qatari royal family abandoned the villa when Isis closed in. Nigeria makes history as St. Ives Communication launches Nigeria's first women radio station

Posted: 13 Jun 2015 06:13 AM PDT

As the glory of the celestial nymphs burnishes the luster of merely human women, so will St. Ives Communication's first radio station for women, improve the lot of the Nigerian woman, according to 'Toun Okewale Sonaiya, director of the media firm. St. Ives Communication was recently granted license to operate Nigeria's first radio station for women by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

The radio station will provide a platform to engage on issues of local, national and international importance for Nigerian women.

The radio station's programming is geared towards the advancement and social wealth of Nigerian women and their families by providing access to a truly independent and commercially run radio station for the female gender. This, Sonaiya said, will be achieved through quality, informative and entertaining programming that will cut across business, politics, sports, news and entertainment from the woman's perspective.

Though focused on women, the radio station will also cater for the interests of the male gender, family and everything important to Nigerian women. Sonaiya emphasised that the programming style will be interactive and engaging, to foster a sense of connection among Nigerian women and their families across all ages, social, cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds. "We will operate 24 hours of ongoing conversations and less music addressing everyday issues for Nigerian women and their families.

The radio station will be Nigeria's first reliable and trusted source for up to date information on the interests and issues for women and their families," she said.

Dear LIB readers; My wife complains that I don't do the 'little things'

Posted: 13 Jun 2015 05:40 AM PDT

From a male LIB reader
So my wife and I have had a few bouts over the past couple months (5 months married) about how "the little things matter most". This concept is not strange to me, as I do sometimes cook, clean, and always get the door for my wife. Problem is though, she's brought it up on more than a few occasions that I don't leave her "cute little notes" or "surprise her with cute little gifts"... Translation - I'm not romantic and definitely do not pay attention to "the little things that matter".
Really got me thinking. And this question has been ringing in my head: is it possible that only women who are getting all the "big things" (food, clothing, and shelter) complain about the little things?
She's my wife, and she's not asking for the moon, so I'm going to endeavor to do "the little things" anyways. Just trying to get other women's take on the situation. Cos I'm just thinking, it'll be a little hard for any woman to talk about cute notes and gifts if her husband can't provide a roof or even food.

Four siblings kill themselves after being abandoned by their parents

Posted: 13 Jun 2015 05:39 AM PDT

Four siblings aged between 5 and 13 reportedly committed suicide in Bijie City in China's province Guizhou on Tuesday June 9 after they were abandoned by their parents. The oldest, a girl, reportedly left a note saying 'today is the day to go', before she and her two sisters and brother drank poison. Neighbours who noticed that the children hadn't been seen in a while went to their house to find them all lying still. She contacted other neighbours who rushed the children to the hospital where they later all died.

Police said they can't confirm if the children had all deliberately drank poison to kill themselves or if one of them had put poison in their food unknowingly to others as the youngest who was just 5 years old can't understand what suicide is...

According to Chinese authority, their mother, Ren Xifen, left home in March 2014 after a long and bitter feud with their father, Zhang Fangqi, who left the village to find work in the city in March 2015, leaving the children to fend for themselves. Their father had left food in the house for the children and asked a neighbour to keep an eye on them. He also left some money in his bank account and gave his bank card to his eldest child. There was more than $400 still in the card after the children were found.

A relative said she went there twice a week to check on the children, who had become withdrawn after their father left. They even stopped going to school.

Police say the children's parent are yet to come forward

Dealing with meeting targets in your place of work

Posted: 13 Jun 2015 03:57 AM PDT

I've put money in two Nigerian banks because of banker friends who told me they have a target to meet every month/year. Others have come asking me to help them out, but mehn, how many bank accounts is one supposed to have? I don't know how it works because I've never worked for any company before but it must put a lot of pressure on a worker who needs to meet a particular (money) target every month. Below is something that was sent to a LIB reader by her company...
 1. In-view of the knowledge you have been impacted with on the job, which we believe you can now use to fully benefit (the company) in terms of making profit, salaries will be target based. Which indicates that your monthly salary of N100,000 will be paid fully if you meet a target of N500,000 monthly in terms of getting businesses for (the company)
2. In case you are not able to achieve the set target, a basic salary of N25,000 will be paid and 10% commission on every amount you make for (the company). This takes effect from Tuesday 2nd June, 2015.
So, she said she will now be paid N25k because she can't meet that N500k monthly target. But are companies who demand this, unreasonable or they are within their rights to, because you have to make profit to pay salary, right? What do you guys think?

Intention to seek the office of the Governor of Bayelsa state - SilokoSiasia

Posted: 13 Jun 2015 02:10 AM PDT

Written by Moses SilokoSiasia. Read below...
My name is Moses SilokoSiasia. I am a young successful Nigerian businessman who has decided to run for office of the Governor for my home state of Bayelsa, Nigeria. The age limit to run for the office of Governor in our constitution is thirty five.  I have waited patiently for a chance to change the political environment in Bayelsa and on June 6th of this year, I turned thirty five and I am ready to run. I am a native of Bayelsa and a self–made successful businessman who until 16 years ago, was a street vendor who scrounged for money and food to survive.
Determined to take myself and family out of poverty, I worked day and night literally to gain a foothold in the very challenging private Nigerian economy.

After consulting with my family and friends, and based upon the tremendous outcry from my home state for help, I have decided to run for the office of Governor of Bayelsa. For far too long, my people have suffered from political oppression!  Despite being one of the wealthiest states in Nigeria, with an abundance of natural resources, Bayelsa has one of the highest unemployment rates in Nigeria.  Our children do not have modern schools or tools to educate them. Our students abroad are stranded without resources to complete their education. Our infrastructure has been neglected resulting in dangerous impassable roads, lack of portable water, and basic human hygiene. Our older citizens have been abandoned and left to die in poverty and poor health.  Our young, internationally educated young men and women have been denied the opportunity to run for office, and told that "the office of the Governor is not for boys". Young citizens of Bayelsa who today seek change are being threatened and intimidated for speaking up against the current regime. Fear mongering and intimidation has no place in Bayelsa and the time has come to end this madness and take back our state from lying, thieving, self-serving politicians.

Since Bayelsa became a state in 1996, there has not been any private economic growth. Our people rely solely on the allocation of Government funds to survive, but the money never trickles down to them due to wastefulness, mismanagement of funds, a lack of leadership and self-serving agendas. Our people have been cheated, lied to, misled, neglected, and held in political bondage for far too long and it is time to set my people free. My name is Moses, and I will lead my people to the Promised Land! I am running for Governor because it is time to take back our state and usher in a new era of leadership and prosperity for the people of Bayelsa. Today, the youth of Bayelsa is crying for real measureable change. The future of Bayelsa is in dire straits. Our youth, the custodians of our future are here to take back our state!

In July 2015, I will formally declare my campaign in Bayelsa, and on Election Day, will make history as the youngest elected person to the office of Governor in the history of Nigeria. It is time for us, the educated, proven successful business minded professionals to lead. The office of the Governor is NOT a trust fund for individualistic self-serving agendas. It is the highest office of the state charged with the responsibility of its people. As a successful businessman, I will govern the state with a firm grip on accountability and charge all those who will work with me with great responsibility and high integrity. I will bring in much needed international investments and create sustainable and meaningful private sector jobs. It is time for all foreign contractor who come here year in and year out to reinvest in our state. No longer will we allow the world, and our current leadership to take advantage of us. I aim to give hope to the hopes and give voice to the voiceless.  The time for real measureable change is now! I am Moses SilokoSiaisiaand I am running for the office of the Governor of Bayelsa to lead my people out of political bondage and to a land of prosperity!

Horrific! See what these two fathers did to their children (photos)

Posted: 13 Jun 2015 03:27 AM PDT

On Tuesday, May 2, 16 year old  Kafayat Bello was beaten mercilessly by her father, Ibrahim Bello, who is a commercial bus driver. She said he whipped her till she could not walk and then he plugged their pressing iron and burnt her multiple times, inflicting severe injuries all over her body.

Kafayat, whose case has been taken over by the Office of the Public Defender under the Lagos State Ministry of Justice, according to Punch, explained that on the day of the incident, she was given the duty of attending to a client who needed manicure and pedicure at her mom's beauty salon.

"When I finished attending to the customer, I left the shop to play with some of my friends. When I got back, my mother asked where I was and told me she would report me to my father. When I got home, my mother told my father what I did, he started to beat me very hard and he then went off to plug a pressing iron, which he used to burn me all over my body," she said.
When the brutal beating of the daughter became unbearable for Kafayat's mother who stood by as her husband punished their daughter, she rushed out to call neighbours for help, who later came in to restrain him.

OPD officials who handled the case said Ibrahim locked up his daughter after the incident and warned her not to go out until the injuries healed so that no one would know what happened.
"But when her classmates came looking for her from school they told her she had missed some tests. In order not to miss more tests, she rushed to school on Thursday, two days after she sustained the injuries. When she got to school, that was when we discovered the extensive injuries," a school official who reported the case said.
As soon as the case was reported, her dad was arrested and OPD took over the case.According to reports, there were at least 15 visible bruises on Kafayat's where she sustained severe injuries from her face down to her thighs.

Omotola said her office would continue to monitor the case to ensure that Ibrahim was diligently prosecuted.

Apart from the case of Kafayat, another case which OPD are working on is the that of five-year-old Olamilekan Mustapha, whose father, Adigun beat him till he lost consciousness.
His 28-year-old father reportedly resuscitated the boy thereafter.
The series of brutal beating Olamilekan's father has meted out to him seems to have turned his young body to a map of some sort as healed and fresh marks of whiplashes crisscross all over his body and face.
All the boy could say was "my father beat me all the time" when asked about the marks all over his body.
Like Kafayat, observant teachers in Olamilekan's school reported his case to the authorities when they noticed the extensive marks all over the boy's face and body when he went to school the following morning.
Adigun, who is an auto mechanic, was later invited by the Office of Public Defender, where he was later handed over to the police for prosecution.
OPD said a protection order was being processed for the custody of Olamilekan in a government children's home, where the boy would be kept pending the determination of his father's case in the court.
It was gathered  that Olamilekan's mother and Adigun had separated some years ago. But that his step-mother, who is nursing a two-month-old baby also beat the boy ruthlessly regularly as well.
Director of the OPD, Mrs. Omotola Rotimi, told our correspondent that the children were victims of transferred aggression but that the severity of the cases has warranted that the fathers be charged to court.
Rotimi said, "The case of the girl that was burnt with iron was so severe that she could have lost her life in the process. We also have the father in custody and would ensure that he is prosecuted diligently for the severe assault on the girl.

"While he kept the girl at home, he invited an auxiliary nurse to treat her injuries but the nurse did a very shoddy job. The injuries could have deteriorated and caused further damage to the girl's body if not because we were notified on time. We had to ensure the girl receive adequate treatment first."
