At no point did I steal from Nigeria - Alison-Madueke addresses Sanusi and $10m private jet allegations

Posted: 07 Jun 2015 06:50 AM PDT

In a fresh interview with ThisDay, immediate past Minister of Petroleum Resources, Dieziani Alison Madueke reacted to all the allegations of corruptions leveled against her while she served as Minister. Alison-Madueke said contrary to reports, she never stole from the Nigerian state. She said she worked for the betterment of Nigeria while she was Minister and sacrificed her time to ensure the petroleum sector was developed.

In the interview, Alison-Madueke acknowledged that she and her team might have made mistakes. Read full interview after the cut...

"Did we make mistakes? There would always be mistakes. People would always make mistakes. Everybody make mistakes and there is no question about that. Have we learnt from our mistakes? Of course we have. But please do not say I stole $20 billion or $18.5 billion because I did not at any point in time. And if NNPC misappropriated funds or so, they have the entire explanation and more forensic audit should be done to determine how and why. But people should not make damaging accusations which have nothing to do with an individual. At no point did I steal from the Nigerian state. And if NNPC misappropriated funds or so, they have the entire explanation and more forensic audit should be done to determine how and why. But people should not make damaging accusations which have nothing to do with an individual. At no point did I steal from the Nigerian state.  In fact, the first mantra I had from the time I came in was that I will never touch anything that has to do with the Federation Account and I never did and I will take that to my grave. So I will suggest that this issue of $20 billion or $18 billion be dropped because that is the major problem I had with my job. I was accused of unsavoury things, but which were actually accusations against NNPC and the audit was deployed to clarify all these things. So let us deal with the issues. I have never gone around accusing people of doing this or that, I have always stuck with the issues even when I was the most abused minister, I was professional, I stuck to the issues and responded only to the issues."she said

The former Minister addressed allegations made against her by Emir of Kano and former CBN governor, Sanusi Muhammad 1st, that she disobeyed the directive of former President Umar Yar'Adua to stop the subsidy plan on Kerosine.

"Let me just make this very clear to Nigeria as a whole because this is an area of great pain for me. That Sanusi should say I sustained the subsidy is not true, when very clearly in 2009, the late President Yar'Adua gave a written directive to the late Minister of Petroleum Resources Alhaji Rilwan Lukman that he should remove the subsidy on DPK. This subsidy on DPK was never removed by the late Minister of Petroleum Resources, whom I considered to be somebody that I regarded almost as a mentor. For reasons best known to late Alhaji Rilwan Lukman and the then economic team, the Finance Minister and others, they never implemented the directive to remove the subsidy. By law and the Petroleum Act, you must gazette such a removal for it to become law and of course it has to be published so that Nigerians would know that there has been a change in the price of the petroleum product. It is illegal to do it or to say you have done it, if you have not gazetted it. Even before that, former President Goodluck Jonathan who was the vice-president at that time, had also clarified, even in a public media broadcast and in person as well, that the subsidy was never removed. So I sought clarification from him and he also made the clarification clear in a public media broadcast about a year and a half ago, that the subsidy was never removed. So at no time did I go against a president's directive. It is not possible that I would have come in as a Minister of Petroleum in 2010 and found that kerosene subsidy no longer existed and that it had been gazetted and I would have suddenly upturned it. Government is a continuum and so it was not possible that I could have done that. So I feel very pained that Sanusi would make it sound like I was the one who went against late President Yar'Adua's directive. I think this should clarify this issue once and for all.    It's high time Nigerians got some insight into your personality, because there were lots of complaints that you are aloof, inaccessible and some even alleged that you were an absentee minister who spent more time at home than in the office"she said.

The former Minister also addressed the allegation of renting a N10 million jet for personal use as Minister

"Well, I don't know whether that issue is still in court. But the reason that I went to court was simple. First of all, nobody can lease a jet for N10 billion over a period. You can buy three jets for N10 billion. So that was obviously a nonsensical argument and I did not lease any jet. The NNPC leases jets and NNPC leased those jets to the best of my knowledge because at that point in time, they had no official planes. As an oil and gas ministry, we have purview over everything and it was actually very wrong that we had to borrow planes from these multinationals whom we were supposed to oversight. So over the years, I am talking about over the last 15 or 20 years, NNPC had either owned, leased or borrowed, both jets and helicopters. That was the case when I came in.
Yes, we had a very old jet which nobody was going to touch and another jet had just been bought by late Alhaji Lukman just before he left, a Hawker. Unfortunately, the moment it came, because it had been sitting unused for over a year it became a problem. In fact, NNPC was advised to sell it because it was a problematic model and had sat unused for a long period. They were advised to sell it, but they didn't sell it. Then after a year of its purchase, it crash-landed in Nsubi and we had to actually give it out for spare parts to the National Security Adviser's office at the end of the day. It was during this period that they leased the private jets for executive movement and operations in general, which we also used, as had always been the case. In that respect, the reason for the leasing and the amount involved are all available and I am sure the NNPC would be willing to give that information to whoever wants to look at them for public records. So again, it was a fabrication that came out from nowhere and was thrown at us as if suddenly out of the blues and for the first time in history, the NNPC was leasing jets or helicopters".

The Former Minister stated that the jet was never for personal use "No it was not for my personal use, it was for executive movement, which is has always been the case. I am saying just like the $20 billion, you find something, you throw it on the person to feel smart or to make it look as if the person is junketing all over the place or as if nobody had done that before in the annals of the NNPC. Of course we were not junketing all over the place. To be very honest, if they had never done that contract to lease the jet, we would have been hiring at a higher cost and which probably would have caused less of an issue. But to be frank, the lease that was put in place, to the best of my knowledge, was done with a company which even Shell and others have been using. So there was a known company with a very good track record and was being used in the industry by other multinationals.
But the other issue that you raised in terms of the National Assembly was not even because of the plane. The reason the plane was used in the legal brief was because that was the topical issue at the time. It was because in that year, the Minister of Petroleum had been summoned to the National Assembly, according to my officers, almost 200 times. And at this point, it became apparent that we were not going to be able to work or to perform our duties as a government agency anymore. So it was now becoming a situation whereby every week, they summoned the Minister of Petroleum, one of the parastatals or NNPC, and it was now becoming virtually impossible to actually perform our duties as an MDA. As such, at that point, our lawyers just felt we needed to stop it because it was becoming extremely disruptive. That was the basis on which the legal action that was taken, just to allow us some space to continue working" she said

Daily Mail columnist: If LGBT people are a family, I’m a Nigerian lesbian

Posted: 07 Jun 2015 04:07 AM PDT

Daily Mail columnist Richard Littlejohn talks about the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender community, discussing a case of a family comprised of several LGBT people, and their 9 year old daughter. He expressed disbelief that such an arrangement could be considered a family, saying if it works, then he's a Nigerian lesbian. Read what he wrote below....
Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin. From yesterday's Daily Mail: 'A transsexual man went to court for the right to contact the child of his former lesbian partner.
'He brought the civil case despite having no connection with the nine-year-old girl. Identified only as Alice, she was born to two lesbians who used donor sperm from a man also in a same-sex relationship.

'The couple — known as Rachel and Helen — split up when Alice was three. Rachel, who was her natural mother, was sectioned with schizophrenia and Helen entered a relationship with Matthew, the man who has brought the case.'
Run that by me again.

And I'm not the only one confused. Several puzzled readers emailed yesterday morning in relation to this story. The reaction of Paul Oliver, from Ilford, was typical: 'You're an intelligent man, Rich. Can you explain this? I can't keep up.

I'll do my best, guv.
'When he [Matthew, presumably] met Helen he was a woman having treatment to live as a man. They were together for four years — Alice living with them — and he claims she called him "Daddy" and he became her effective stepfather.
They [Matthew and Helen, do pay attention] split up in 2013 and Matthew has had no contact with Alice, who has been diagnosed with autism, for almost a year.
'Having completed his gender reassignment, Matthew asked the Family Court to allow him to apply for an order for contact with Alice. His request was opposed by both Helen and Rachel, who said Alice had started to call herself Daniel and claim she was boy while living with Matthew.

'Helen was said to be very concerned that he encouraged Alice [Daniel?] to wear boys' clothes and told her to avoid playing with gender appropriate toys.'
I'm sorry if you read this yesterday, but it is worth repeating in some detail if we are to get any kind of handle on what on earth is occuring here. I'll try to edit it as I go along.

Apparently, Helen claims that Matthew was 'controlling and verbally and mentally abusive' and became aggressive during his testosterone treatment.
As a result: 'Helen, who suffers from personality disorder and has limited mobility, said she did not want Alice to stay overnight at the home of Matthew and his new partner James.'
Hi, James! Welcome to the House of Fun.
'Rachel, who had been Helen's civil partner, said Alice already had contact with both her mothers and her biological father, the gay sperm donor.' Rachel now lives 'in the community in supported accommodation'.

'Matthew, who also has psychiatric problems, said Alice knew he used to be a woman but had only known him as a man.'
Hang on, when Matthew was living with Helen and Alice, he was still a woman undergoing gender reassignment treatment. We don't know what his name was before he started calling himself Matthew, but it's academic, anyway.

None of those involved can be identified for legal reasons to protect Alice's (or should that be Daniel's?) anonymity. And there's the crux of all this. Let's not lose sight of the fact that at the heart of this flying circus of selfishness is a vulnerable nine-year-old girl who has allegedly been encouraged to think of herself as a boy by a man who used to be a woman.

Is it any wonder Alice is confused, poor kid?
Alice was brought into this world by two lesbians, using sperm donated by a homosexual who was living with another man.

Her biological mother, Rachel, was subsequently sectioned with psychological problems and Alice was left in the care of Helen, the other half of the lesbian relationship, who suffers from a personality disorder and has limited mobility.
Helen took up with Matthew, who also has psychiatric problems and at the time was a woman undergoing gender reassignment treatment to become a man. Did no one at any stage stop to think what might be in the best interests of the child?

The lesbians were busy exercising their 'right' to have a baby by artificial insemination. Matthew was exercising his 'right' to become a man.
But what about their responsibilities towards Alice? Where the hell were social services in all of this? Celebrating diversity, probably.
No doubt in the authorities' determination to be 'non-judgmental' any concerns about the welfare of this little girl went straight out of the window.

This is where the insanity of the 'rights' culture leads. And there is no group more militant or vituperative than the minuscule but totalitarian 'trans' lobby.
The BBC's James Naughtie has been hounded into issuing a grovelling apology because he referred to someone called Caitlyn Jenner as 'he/she'. Caitlyn used to be a male athlete called Bruce Jenner, and is apparently something to do with the American TV freak show, Keeping Up With The Kardashians.

Jenner is featured on the cover of Vanity Fair in a strapless corset. Even though the athlete formerly known as Bruce has fathered children and is still, reportedly, in possession of a full set of male genitalia, his supporters insist 'she has always been a woman'.
According to the new orthodoxy, people are allowed to self-define their gender. So if a man says he's a woman, then the rest of us have to go along with it. There is no reasoning with these fanatics.
Presumably, then, I could announce that I was a Nigerian lesbian and no one would be able to argue with me. This is madness.
Look, I've written before that I support the right of the tiny number of people affected by gender dysphoria to receive treatment on the NHS. But there are other considerations, not least the impact on any children involved.
Children are moulded by their upbringing and environment. And in this case, it's no surprise that Alice is such a crazy, mixed-up kid, given the adult role models in her life. She should have been taken into care years ago.

Fortunately, the Family Court turned down Matthew's application for contact with her, on the grounds that it could be damaging to her wellbeing. How did this ever get to court and how much has it cost us?

After handing down his ruling, Judge Clifford Bellamy, an ordained Methodist minister, felt obliged to add: 'Alice's story is an example of the different ways in which modern family life is formed. It can be complicated.'
True, but please don't try to pretend this is the new normal.
When Call Me Dave became Conservative leader in 2005, he insisted that we must support families of all shapes and sizes.

Fair enough. But I don't think Alice's dysfunctional 'family' — two lesbian mums with psychiatric problems, a gay sperm donor dad and a transsexual 'step-father' who encouraged her to become a boy — is exactly what he had in mind.

Leonardo DiCaprio sues French mag for claiming he is having a baby with Rihanna...and he doesn't want the child

Posted: 07 Jun 2015 03:13 AM PDT

Leonardo DiCaprio is reportedly suing a French gossip magazine called 'Oops! for alleging that he's having a baby with Rihanna and he does not want the child.

According to Gossip Cop, who claim they have exclusive court documents filed by Leo's lawyers in a French court, the actor is demanding the magazine retracts the story and pays him the maximum compensation French law allows, which would be about $20,000 in damages plus legal fees.

Gossip Cop also reports that Leo is also asking that the magazine be fined about $15,000 if they don't apologize to him or print a retraction.
Leo reportedly became aware of the magazine's report after sighting it in France while he was there for the Cannes Film Festival last month. It was published May 13th with the title ''Rihanna Pregnant With Leonardo's Baby: He Doesn't Want The Baby'.

When Gossip Cop reached out to the owner of the magazine, Frederic Truskolaski, he said he was shocked that Leo would even bother to sue over the story. "Why would he do this?". He said they weren't sure the story was true but since others had carried something similar, they decided to run with theirs.
"We didn't know if Rihanna was pregnant but 'thought she might be. We were not sure, of course'. he said. He also said he knew they won't win the case but he knows the fine won't be much 'Usually you lose. [The fine] won't be much.'
Leonardo is not just suing because of the report according to GC, he is also suing because the pics of him used violate France's strict right to privacy laws. The case is set to go before a Paris court on June 16.

Chinese businessman pays $2.35 million to eat lunch with Warren Buffett

Posted: 07 Jun 2015 02:34 AM PDT

A Chinese multimillionaire businessman has agreed to pay $2,345,678 for a private lunch with one of the world's richest men, Warren Buffett. He won the charity auction to have dinner with the billionaire investor. The money will benefit the Glide Foundation (a nonprofit in San Francisco that provides food, health care, rehabilitation and other services to the poor and homeless)

According to Reuters, Glide said the man, Zhu Ye, chairman of Beijing-based Dalian Zeus Entertainment Co, submitted the highest of 76 bids to win the five-day auction on eBay, which concluded on Friday night. His bid was well below the $3,456,789 winning bid in 2012, still a record for an eBay charity auction, but will help Glide meet its $16 million annual budget. The 16 auctions have raised about $20.2 million.

The man can invite up to seven friends to eat with Buffett at the Smith & Wollensky steakhouse in Manhattan. Buffett, 84, will talk about almost anything, including philanthropy and life, but not what he is buying and selling.

The auctions began in 2000 after Buffett's first wife Susan introduced him to Glide. She died in 2004.
None of the first three winners paid more than $25,000, but the price soared once the auctions, which had been live only, moved online in 2003.

Buffett is worth $69.2bn ranking fourth worldwide. He is donating nearly all his wealth to charity.
The following are the winning bids in the Glide auctions:
2000: Anonymous, $25,000
2001: Anonymous, $18,000
2002: Anonymous, $25,000
2003: David Einhorn, Greenlight Capital, $250,100

LIB reader narrates how he got robbed in traffic by petty theives & what he did about it (photos)

Posted: 07 Jun 2015 03:16 AM PDT

A LIB reader tells his story. Read below..
"I was driving on the lekki express at about 10pm, i had just driven passed the second round about, the road was free up until about half way through to the next round about. I decided to wind the windows down to save gas as its scarce.
My battery was running low on my phone (P9981) so I grabbed my power bank to charge it. A few minutes later, some guy suddenly came at my side of the car and said something I didnt quite hear and immediately shouted "wetin?", leaning sideways incase he became aggressive but he hurriedly walked away, then I heard something move from the front passenger side, I looked and saw some else running away, then it occured to me what had jus happened, f@#* my phone!
(i was charging it and left it on the seat with the power bank, silly idea) i quickly searched the seat and lo and behold, my phone was still there. The fool had taken my power bank and usb wire instead. You see, the power bank looks like an iphone, slick, black gloss infront and chrome behind. I got alot of compliments for it. That must have deceived him.
People around saw that someone stretched into my car and ran with something and no one showed any sign of empathy or alerted me of the theft as i was skilflully distracted by the other guy.
Anyway, as i drove on, with my windows "over up", i started reflecting on how lucky i was and then i became increasingly upset that i fell for that cheap trick. I made up my mind and turned back when i got to the 3 round about. I had a feeling that by then, they would have realised it wasnt a phone. As i apprached the exact spot where i was robbed, on the other lane, i saw the boy who distracted with about 8other boys looking on for their next victim (i assumed). Then i wound down and shouted, "ona dey plan another robbery abi, you think say ona sharp abi, you no see my phone carry, thiefffff, oleeeee!!!!"
They turned around and one of the boys asks, "who rob you?" and i pointed at the boy, he immediately denied it, saying he wasnt a thief but the other boys who apparently didnt know him, were street hawkers, attempted to grab him and then he ran, manoeuving between cars in that traffic. I immediately hit the gas, to see if i could intercept him. By the time i made it back to the other lane, they had caught up with him, he attempted to scale the wired fence LCC installed but his foot got tangled in the fence, he was dragged down and pounced on him heavily. I got down, popped my trunk, took out the jack winder and introduced it to his back (which i regret now). All the while he kept denying it but couldnt give a good reason for being on the road.
Passers by also had their share, some people said they had been robbing people in traffic for about 2weeks straight, tonight was for the owners.
I decided it was a matter for the police & so i called the RRS at lekki ikoyi toll. They were there in 10minutes. I explained what happened, he attempted to deny it still, half way through his denial, he recieved two solid policeman slap. One of them asked, "oga wetin make we do with this one as we no fit prosecute am, normally, we go carry all these born throwey go lagoon fire them" I said NO OH! That they should lock him up and drill him till he produces all his accomplices. They bondled him in handcuffs and took him away.
Surprisingly, they didnt ask for money but guess who did, the street hawkers...
My narration is long but i need to detail you to be able to visualise the whole drama. It felt good, who knows, he could have graduated to gun point robbery
Im sure there are Libers who have had similar experiences, have you?
