I turned down a N400m car proposal for the presidency, NASS members can't spend N4.5bn to buy cars- Buhari

Posted: 30 Dec 2015 12:51 PM PST

President Buhari says he will be exploring the possibility of stopping National Assembly members from spending N4.5 billion on car purchase when they still collect transportation allowances. He said he turned down a N400 million car proposal for the presidency
"I turned down a N400million car proposal for the presidency. I said the cars I have are good enough for 10 years. We are having problem with the National Assembly regarding TSA. I have to holding a closed-door meeting with the National Assembly regarding the cars they are trying to buy. I hope they haven't bought them yet.
They can't buy cars for themselves and also take money in car loans. I can't see the National assembly paying 4.5 Billion Naira to buy cars after collecting transport allowance. I will revisit that story. We have to live within our means."he said

Presidential media chat: Buhari speaks on oil subsidy, chiibok girls, Army/Shiite clash, others

Posted: 30 Dec 2015 12:52 PM PST

President Buhari this evening hosted his maiden Presidential Media Chat since assuming office on May 29 this year. The journalists that interviewed are: Kayode Akintemi (Channels TV), Munir Dan Ali (Daily Trust), Ngozi Anyaegbulam (Media World International),  and Ibanga Isine (Premium Times). During the chat, he spoke on many issues. Read all that after the cut...

How are we doing with the fight against corruption?
Buhari:
"Thirty years ago as Head of State, we collected those we perceived to be corrupt and put them in protective custody, until they prove they were not guilty. At present, those suspected of being corrupt are innocent until they are proven guilty.
"We have documents showing Nigerian crude oil was lifted illegally and proceeds are put into personal accounts instead of Government account. We are in court with suspected corrupt persons and we cannot comment until the court are through. We can only appeal to Nigerians to be patient."
"Our constraint is that the accused persons have to defend themselves in court to defend themselves. So, we cannot release their names to the public until the issues are completed in court. Whatever we recover will be presented in court. "The documentation in court include bank statements and documents from Customs Service that are to be presented in court. Until then, we ask Nigerians to have patience."
"We have to be patient and await outcome of courts decision. Government will only react through the Ministry of Justice after the courts have finished with matters before them. "We have documents showing where monies have been lodged."
Is there need to rejig the EFCC, ICPC?
Buhari:
"We have to be very sure of the documents we get and we have to cross check records sometimes across countries and in the EFCC. Those who were engaged in the theft of oil were people of substance and have the wealth to hire the best of lawyers to defend them.
We need to submit fool-proof documents to succeed in prosecution.
How many people have ICPC prosecuted in the past? That is why we are being thorough now. By the end of first quarter of next year, we would be in a position to tell Nigerians how far we have gone. By the end of the first quarter of next year, we will tell Nigerians how far we have gone on the fight against corruption. I swore by the Holy Koran to defend the country's constitution and the law. So, we will not put any body above the law".
Asset declaration not so public after all, not fully made.
Buhari:
"I have declared my assets four times in the past. You have the constitutional right to go to the relevant government agency to go and seek for it. "They were deposited at the Ministry of Justice. If Ministry of Justice cannot produce my asset declaration form, then they too should answer some questions.
"Why me alone, why not others who were governors and Ministers as well. I think I don't have to ask them to give, it is your constitutional role."
Buhari says he swore by the Holy Quran to fight corruption

"‎By the end of the first quarter of next year, we will tell Nigerians how far we have gone on the fight against corruption. I swore by the Holy Koran to defend the country's constitution and the law. So, we will not put any body above the law."
On allegations that some members of his party that have been accused of corruption are being shielded from investigation, he said

"I don't tolerate corruption and I did not pick anyone that will corrupt my government. It is the right of Nigerians to take them to court. I have not taken anybody who is facing corruption charges. I cannot make the mistake of appointing anyone with corruption. Whoever is found to be corrupt would not only be sacked but prosecuted."

On the missing Chibok girls, Buhari said his administration is working towards their rescue

"‎We want to be sure that the girls are complete, safe and sound before we attempt any form of negotiation on the girls. We are still keeping our option. If a credible leadership of Boko Haram is ready for negotiation without any condition we are ready to listen to them. We are working with Niger, Chad and Cameroun on the girls. We have no credible intelligence of where they are. "

On the Shiite/Army clash, he said

"‎The President of Iran spoke to me about the situation. But, I told him that as a government we have a system we must follow. "As the head of the Federal Government, I told him I will have to wait for the official report from the Kaduna State government from their investigations. To be fair to the both sides, we have to wait for the report of the inquiry. I expect the Kaduna State government will bring the report on the inquiry because the crisis happened in its domain. There are all sorts of allegations. So, we just have to wait for the report.  I was in touch with the governor of Kaduna state and the president of Iran talked to me about it. We have a system of investigation as a government and as the head of the federal government, I have to wait for official report before I comment. The Police and the SSS are doing their own role of finding out what happened. In any incident where lives and property were lost there is a standard way of doing things and people would be asked to come and give evidence. How can any group create a state within a state? I saw a clip in which some dissidents were virtually hitting the chest of Generals."
On the possible devaluation of the Naira, Buhari said

"Personally, I don't support the devaluation of the Naira. We handed over a secured country in 1979, but by 1984, nobody knew how much Nigeria was owing. The situation now is aggravated by the downturn in the petroleum industry. It is now per barrel and we have debt service of about N1.5 trillion and we have commitment on the ground. We have to reorganize the NNPC. We have to introduce the TSA. There were 45 accounts in the NNPC alone. Ministry of Defence had about 70 accounts. We have got about N1.5 trillion through the TSA. The oil downturn is very unfortunate for this government. Check previous records. Over 90% were recurrent. No country can develop without capital projects. We were in very very bad shape. I will not support devaluation of the Naira. I need to be convinced that there is need for the country to devalue the Naira. Is it against the dollar or pound? We have our priorities. To provided money to fund the projects we have already outlined, and not for those who want hard currency to import textile and toothpick."
Regarding the continuous detention of Sambo Dasuki and Nnamdi Kanu: Buhari said, "If you see the atrocities those committed against this country, we can't allow them to jump bail."

She then went into one of the toilets where she delivered a baby girl. The newborn slipped out and fell unto the rail tracks.

Buhari hints on possible ban of hijabs in Nigeria

Posted: 30 Dec 2015 12:03 PM PST

President Buhari has hinted on the possible ban of hijabs following the increasing rate of suicide bombing. He gave the hint while speaking during the presidential media chat tonight...
"If this thing (suicide bombing) continues, Hijab would have to be banned. When I said that the war has been technical won, I said the capacity of Boko Haram to unleash attacks from camps and barracks have been stopped. If Hijap is found to be a problem, the government will have no option than to take a decision on it. The people will have to consider between it and their security."

Cristiano Ronaldo 'in Miami to arrange to have another child'

Posted: 30 Dec 2015 11:46 AM PST

Real Madrid star, Cristiano Ronaldo allegedly left his five-year-old son Cristiano Jr with his mum Dolores in Portugal so he could travel to Miami,  Florida, to deal with arrangements for a sibling for his son, a popular Portuguese TV presenter claimed today.

The 30-year-old spoke of his desire to have 'five or six' little Cristianos in a recent magazine interview.

He told FHM magazine: 'I think I have good conditions to have many kids so I want this. Let's find the right woman.'
He also gushed about his five-year-old, said to have been born in a private clinic in the US with the collaboration of two Mexican surrogate mums.

Cristiano Ronaldo vowed that the identity of his son's mother will never be known.

Ronaldo's mum revealed in her approved biography she had picked up Cristiano Jr, known affectionately as Cristianinho - 'little Cristiano', from a private hospital in Florida.

Cristiano was pictured getting VIP treatment at a basketball match and relaxing bare-chested round his hotel pool while his son stayed with his grandmother more than 3,800 miles away.

Dolores, who this year opened her own Twitter and Instagram pages, posted a string of pictures of her surrounded by her grandchildren including Cristianinho over Christmas in her native Madeira.

OPEC says a $10 trillion investment is needed to prevent a massive spike in oil prices

Posted: 30 Dec 2015 11:11 AM PST

OPEC says that $10 trillion worth of investment will need to flow into oil and gas through 2040 in order to meet the world's energy needs.

The OPEC published its World Oil Outlook 2015 (WOO) in late December, which struck a much more pessimistic note on the state of oil markets than in the past. On the one hand, OPEC does not see oil prices returning to triple-digit territory within the next 25 years, a strikingly bearish conclusion. The group expects oil prices to rise by an average of about $5 per year over the course of this decade, only reaching $80 per barrel in 2020. From there, it sees oil prices rising slowly, hitting $95 per barrel in 2040.

Long-term projections are notoriously inaccurate, and oil prices are impossible to predict only a few years out, let alone a few decades from now. Priced modeling involves an array of variables, and slight alterations in certain assumptions – such as global GDP or the pace of population growth – can lead to dramatically different conclusions. So the estimates should be taken only as a reference case rather than a serious attempt at predicting crude prices in 25 years. Nevertheless, the conclusion suggests that OPEC believes there will be adequate supply for quite a long time, enough to prevent a return the price spikes seen in recent years.

Part of that has to do with what OPEC sees as a gradual shift towards efficiency and alternatives to oil. The report issued estimates for demand growth five years at a time, with demand decelerating gradually. For example, the world will consume an extra 6.1 million barrels of oil per day between now and 2020. But demand growth slows thereafter: 3.5 mb/d between 2020 and 2025, 3.3 mb/d for 2025 to 2030; 3 mb/d for 2030 to 2035; and finally, 2.5 mb/d for 2035 to 2040. The reasons for this are multiple: slowing economic growth, declining population rates, and crucially, efficiency and climate change efforts to slow consumption. In fact, since last year's 2014 WOO, OPEC lowered its 2040 oil demand projection by 1.3 mb/d because it sees much more serious climate mitigation policies coming down the pike than it did last year.

Of course, some might argue that even that estimate – that the world will be consuming 110 mb/d in 2040 – could be overly optimistic. Coming from a collection of oil-exporting countries, that should be expected. Energy transitions are hard to predict ahead of time, but when they come, they tend to produce rapid changes. Any shot at achieving the world's stated climate change targets will require a much more ambitious effort. While governments have dithered for years, efforts appear to be getting more serious. More to the point, the cost of electric vehicles will only decline in real dollar terms over time, and adoption should continue to rise in a non-linear fashion. That presents a significant threat to long-term oil sales.

At the same time, OPEC also issued a word of caution in its report. While oil markets experience oversupply in the short- to medium-term, massive investments in exploration and production are still needed to meet demand over the long-term. OPEC believes $10 trillion will be necessary over the next 25 years to ensure adequate oil supplies. "If the right signals are not forthcoming, there is the possibility that the market could find that there is not enough new capacity and infrastructure in place to meet future rising demand levels, and this would obviously have a knock-on impact for prices," OPEC concluded. About $250 billion each year will have to come from non-OPEC countries.

See what Reuters said about Nigeria

Posted: 30 Dec 2015 09:30 AM PST

An article in Reuters by John Cohen detailing pervasive corruption in Ukraine was titled: Corruption In Ukraine Is So Bad, A Nigerian Prince Would Be Embarrassed.' Lol. Imagine. The article goes on to explain just how corrupt Ukraine is.
"When it comes to Ukrainian corruption, the numbers speak for themselves. Over $12 billion per year disappears from the Ukrainian budget, according to an adviser to Ukraine's National Anti-Corruption Bureau.
And in its most recent review of global graft, anti-corruption watchdog Transparency International ranked Ukraine 142 out of 174 countries on its Corruption Perceptions Index — below countries such as Uganda, Nicaragua and Nigeria. Ordinary Ukrainians also endure paying petty bribes in all areas of life. From vehicle registration, to getting their children into kindergarten, to obtaining needed medicine, everything connected to government has a price."

Ambode's convoy apprehends Airforce cadets for locking boy in car trunk

Posted: 30 Dec 2015 09:28 AM PST

Read the press statement below...
The convoy of the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday apprehended two Airforce cadets in Mile 12 area of the State while dehumanizing an artisan, Dahiru Lawal for allegedly breaking the windscreen of a Chrysler Stratus car with registration number KRD 267 DV.
The cadets – Peters O. Solomon and Abdullahi Fahad, who claimed to be Airforce personnel attached to the Airforce Base in Ikeja, had forced Lawal in the boot of their car after dragging him on the ground for the said offence.

Governor Ambode, who was returning from an inspection visit to Agbowa in Ikorodu, saw the situation and swiftly intervened to save Lawal who was gasping for breath.
The Governor wondered how such inhuman treatment could be meted to a fellow citizen just for slightly breaking the windscreen of a car.

When questioned by journalists, the cadets admitted putting Lawal in the boot of their car.
According to them, Lawal tried to escape after breaking the windscreen and ran into the nearby market where they eventually chased and apprehended him.

Peters said: "What happened is that the boy broke the windscreen in front of my car. When I stopped, I asked him to come, the boy ran away. We have to drag him back and put him in the boot."
"I kind of threatened his boss that he is working with and when his boss came and looked at what he did to me, that was when I put him inside the boot for the remaining ones to go and call the boss. Not that I locked the boot, I only put him inside the boot, but I did not lock the boot," he said.
Also Abdullahi said himself and Peters were along Mile 12 after visiting a friend when they heard a knack on their windscreen and they saw Lawal attempting to escape.

"We now run inside the market and dragged him (Lawal) down. I was even asking who he is working with because I want to see his Oga since I know he cannot repair my damaged windscreen. I want to see the man he is working with so that we can settle everything with him. I now told my colleague that we should hand him over to Airforce police at the Airforce Base," Abdullahi said.
While narrating his ordeal in the hands of the cadets, Lawal who hails from Kaduna State, said he mistakenly damaged the windscreen with the load he carried, and that he took to his heels because he was afraid of what they might do to him.

He said: "I ran into the market and they pursued me and caught me inside the market. They started beating me and dragged me to their car."

"I ran because I was afraid of what the cadets might do to me, while my boss and people around begged on my behalf, but their pleas fell on deaf ears."
"The police also came to plead with them to open the boot but they insisted on taking me away and it was at that point that the convoy of the Governor arrived to rescue me from the boot of the car where they kept me," Lawal said.

He added that he lost his cell phone and the sum of N5, 000 which he was having on him at the point that he was being dragged on the floor.
The Governor had since ordered that the suspects be handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Alleged victimization of a Nigerian student in Republic of Benin (photos)

Posted: 30 Dec 2015 08:53 AM PST

A LIB reader tells his story below...
My name is Sikiru Yusuf Adewunmi Joseph Statples. I am a 200l (two hundred) level student in Les Cour Sonour University in Cotonou Benin republic, where I am studying International relations and political science. I went into that country in a good faith of which I entered into a tenancy agreement on the 20th of April 2015 and its going to end on 20th February 2016 with my landlord whose name is Mme HOUNkpehedji.

On the 12th of November before the expiration of the agreement the landlord illegally ejected me without no prior notice or court order and threw my belongings out of the property in that scenario my all my properties was  damaged because of an utility bill which i told him to get me a printed slip of which he went to the meter and wrote an inflated bill on a sheet of paper which i told him i wouldn't pay unless he brings a printed slip from their power holding company. an argument ensued before the ejection.

Subsequent to the unlawful ejection i was aggrieved so I went to my school where i wrote an appeal to the director generale of my school Mr  Fabrice Sonour.  After the appeal i wrote i went to a local police station that has jurisdiction of that area and the police invited the landlord for an interview. He attended the police station but the policemen where been biased about the whole issue of which i was threatened by the landlord that hes going to make life unbearable for me in that country... i had no financial capability to consult a legal practitioner to help address that situation. On the 14th of November 2015 i went to the Nigerian embassy in Benin republic for assistance due to my distress situation i was kept outside the embassy for two hours despite the fact i showed them my permanent voters card as proof of me been a Nigerian citizen. After the long wait a sheet of paper was brought by the security men of which i wrote an appeal to the ambassador then i was let in. I had to come again the next day to the embassy where i met Nigerian Consul to Benin Mr Badmus of which he accompanied me to the police station at Epe Carrefour
To my surprise the consul when he wanted to introduce me at the police station in yoruba dialect said and i quote 'awon ti Buhari ni eleyi' which means i was an emissary of buhari this portrayed me as a whistle blower of the federal republic of Nigeria. That careless comment by the consul made them place me on surveillance in that country.
Linda  i was explicitly told my name was going to be changed to Sikiru Yusuf Razaq and i wouldn't be extradited from the country. i read a lot of meaning to the change of name of which i knew due to the insurgency situation in our country and for the fact that i bear a Muslim name of which i am a christian i decided to stop carrying my blue school bag and i kept carrying a bible where ever i go.
I kept visiting the embassy but with their attitude and their inability to represent me at my own best interest as citizen of the federal republic of Nigeria i had reasonable belief that the Nigerian embassy was collaborating with the police station to frustrate me from pursuing the unlawful ejection case. Linda a lot of irregularities is happening in that country of which the ejection cases is rife in that country and the hostility shown to our citizens is appalling. On the 24th of November i went to the embassy to check  the status of the case Linda  i was driven out of the embassy. The Almighty God can bear me witness
As i left the embassy that day i decided to leave the country that same day  on my way i was attacked by unidentified men who left me for dead. they inflicted heavy injuries on me of which they left me on the road practically dead. The Baale of Seme called the Baale of Badagry that there was a corpse lying on the road. As the Nigerian policemen came to take away my supposed corpse by a stroke of miracle i regained a bit of consciousness and i was subsequently rushed and admitted to the Badagry general hospital. after i was discharged from  the hospital i was on administrative pills for a month or thereabout. Ever since then i haven't  been able to go back to my school despite the fact that the school was on session before the yuletide break.
Linda  i'm traumatized and am apprehensive that grievous  bodily harm will be inflicted on me if i return to school and i my life would be threatened.
On the 22nd of December i wrote a petition to the national assembly to humbly look into my matter with seriousness
Linda i have all the photo evidences to corroborate this debacle i was embroiled in.
JUst to let you know its because of this my issue the social media bill want to be passed into law and i will want this to get to  president of what happened to me in that country. Linda i humbly request you put this on your blog and our president is having a media chat today at 7pm. (Thanks in anticipation Your biggest fan) May God bless you more abundantly as you do so.
Enclosed are the photo evidences to corroborate my story
1 my photo
2 hospital photos
3 unlawful ejection photos
4 hospital card
5 school id card
6 voters card
7 the petition that was written to the national assembly
8 proof that the petition was sent to the national assembly

And some people would rather break car windows in traffic and steal from people. This man packs gutter with his bare hands and puts it in his wheel barrow for a stipend. This is his hustle. May not be hygienic but it's better than stealing. God bless him. More photos after the cut...

Two teenagers on a road trip with friends in Turkey died after being hit by a truck while attempting to take a selfie on a road. The pair were part of the group of five young men who had taken a hired car to travel on a trip from Alanya to Antalya, on the south-west coast of Turkey.

According to Police, the five friends had been drinking and friends of the killed teenagers said they had stopped by the airport's perimeter fence on their way back to look at the planes, and then all five of them decided to lay on the road to take a selfie with one of the planes in the background as it came into land.

But because it was already dark at 9pm, the truck driver didn't see them, and ran over two of the boys identified as Muhammet Bozkurt, 17, and Caglar Savasci, 19. The other three escaped disaster after managing to roll out of the way at the last minute.

'Zakzaky ran a parallel government for 40 years' - Sheikh Gumi

Posted: 30 Dec 2015 07:58 AM PST

While speaking with newsmen in Kaduna, renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmed Gumi accused the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, of running a parallel government in the North. He alleged that for 40 years of its existence, the Shiite sect conducted military training of its members. He said;
"The Shiites have been embarking on military training and producing cadets and soldiers. The Islamic Movement of Nigeria does not recognize the corporate entity of Nigeria. The group is not registered. They operate above the law and they get direct foreign aid."
The cleric said that the late president Umara Yaradua informed him of the importation of large caches of weapons into the country by the sect with the cooperation of Iran, he also said he wrote a letter year warning against the dangers of the sect blocking roads whose members "travelled on foot from all over the country to Zaria.", according to him, the blockage of roads by the sect is "an abomination in Islam".

While warning that the North would continue to be under-developed if the Shi'ite and Boko Haram groups were not eradicated, Gumi said, "The strife and unnecessary blocking of roads and shouting slogans on the way increases the tension in the North."

The cleric noted that the bloody clash between the Army and the Shi'ites was a divine intervention to prevent the recurrence of "another Boko Haram."
