It is dangerous to travel at night, Federal Road Safety Corps warns

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 01:08 PM PST

Following the spate of road crash fatalities resulting from night-time travels, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in a press release on Friday, November 4, reiterated its warning to the general public to desist from night trips due to obvious and inherent dangers associated with such trips.
Making this declaration, the Corps Public Education Officer, Corps Commander Imoh Etuk highlighted numerous factors which negate night-time travels in Nigeria at the moment such as the poor state of roads, inadequate rescue services, fatigue, inadequate road signs/markings and poor vehicle maintenance culture.

Speaking further, Etuk emphasized on the change of light intensity and blur effect of night driving on the vision of drivers which increases the probability of road crashes at night. Under this circumstances; according to him, when light levels are reduced, the pupil of the eyes open up in size to admit more light thus making what the driver sees to become blurred.

Continuing, the FRSC spokesman said "since the human eye takes time to adjust to new levels of light, a driver on night trip suffers temporary vision impairment when moving from bright areas(motor way intersections in the urban centres) to dark areas(rural areas where there is minimal road lights)".

Commander Etuk also traced another negative impact of night-time driving to the glare from automobile lights, particularly from the rear view mirror which can lead to temporary loss of a driver's vision, recalling that "at 100 metres/ph, a vehicles moves at 28 metres per second, meaning that the lives of all occupants of such vehicles will be put to serious danger when the driver suffers a temporary loss of sight".

He also recalled with concern, the recent night-time fatal crash on 18th November 2015 at 12.10am, at Sango Ota, old toll gate end of the Lagos-Abeokuta express way which resulted to the death of 9 persons and leaving others with serious injuries. According to Commander Etuk, "media reports indicate that the crash occurred when a truck loaded with cement, apparently had a brake failure, veered off the its lane and rammed into several other vehicles"

Reacting to measures being initiated by the Corps to curb the trend of night trips in Nigeria, the Corps Public Education Officer expressed the FRSC' concern over traffic peculiarities associated with the yuletide season and the penchant for night trips among Nigerians during this period and reiterated the Corps' advise for the motoring public to desist from night travels.

However, he added that since the FRSC does not wish to step on the fundamental human rights of most Nigerians to move freely, it is still instructive to advise the motoring public on the hazards associated with this practice. "This underscores why we embark on robust public awareness campaigns for Nigerians to appreciate the grievious dangers of travelling at night at the moment because of the absence of the proper indices to ensure the safety of those who prefer to travel at night".

He also frowned at the use of extra lights by drivers of heavy duty vehicles due to its dazzling effect on other drivers, adding that the FRSC operatives have been mandated to prosecute any driver who carries extra light on his vehicle which is violation of the provisions of the National Road Traffic Regulation, 2004.

Cut down on their travels & tours- Fayose tells governors proposing to reduce minimum wage

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 12:59 PM PST

Ekiti state governor, Ayo Fayose has dissociated himself from calls by some state governors for the reduction of the N18, 000 minimum wage. According to Fayose, instead of the governors to cut down on the minimum wage which isn't enough, they should cut down on their travels and tours and the number of wives and children they have. He said this during the Agenda for the Treasury Board meeting held as part of preparation of the 2016 Budget in Ekiti today December 4th.

"Today most newspapers reported the story about call by some state governors that the minimum wage of N18,000 be reduced or that there should be massive retrenchment of workers in the public service. They are on their own and I take exemption to that. The minimum wage is even not enough. Reduction of wages or retrenchment of workers won't happen in Ekiti State. Instead of those anti-labour and anti-people policies, the governors should cut down on their travels and tours and cut down minimum wives and children and their affluence. Let the governors cut their coats according to their sizes. Why are they changing the goal post when the match has started? When they were campaigning, there were indices of the looming economic challenges then, why did they not use that to campaign and see if people will vote for them? They should have told Nigerians then that the economy is bad and that they would sack workers and reduce their salaries while campaigning and see if they would win. They cannot just change the rules midway. If you sack somebody, it is like cutting down a tree. The person sacked has dependants and himself to cater for. If the government is owing, it is better. It will be on record that the government is owing and when the economy improves, we can then pay the workers rather than sacking them and sending them into the labour market. It is not my agenda to sack workers. Despite the low allocations coming to Ekiti State, I won't do that," he said.

New heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury says women's best place is in the kitchen & on their backs

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 12:35 PM PST

Tyson Fury, the new heavyweight boxing champion has caused more controversy this week by saying women are better off in the kitchen and on their backs. Fury, who defeated Wladmir Klitschko last week to win the WBA,WBF and IBF titles last month made comments about homosexuals so his latest comments on women will only bring more criticism his way.

Tyson Fury was nominated for BBC's Sports Person of the year but an online petition that has gotten over 30,000 signatures to remove his name from the nominee list will only get more signatures after his latest comments.

The footage that emerged has a publication date of November 25. When asked his opinion on women in boxing, Fury focused on the ring girls rather than athletes.
'I think they are very nice when they're walking around that ring holding them cards,' he said. 'I like them actually, they give me inspiration, when I'm tired and I see them wiggling around with their round two, round eight...I think women in boxing is very good.'
When pushed further on women actually boxing, Fury claimed he is 'not a sexist'.
'It's up to everybody what they want to do,' he said. 'I'm all for it I'm not a sexist. I believe if a man can to go work all his life a woman can. Who am I to say "don't do that cos you're a girl"? But I believe a woman's best place is in the kitchen and on her back, that's my personal belief. Making me a good cup of tea, that's what I believe.'
Fury immediately laughed off the comment but when asked about British heptathlete Ennis-Hill during the hour-long interview, this is what he said.
'That's the runner isn't it?' he replied. 'I think she's good, she's won quite a few medals for Britain, she slaps up good as well, when she's got a dress on she looks quite fit.'

Remember the Syrian refugee pictured selling pens to feed his kids? He is now an employer! (photos)

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 11:23 AM PST

It is amazing what people are capable of achieving if given opportunities. And doesn't he look younger? Few months ago, Abdul Halim al-Attaa was photgraphed trying to sell biros to passing drivers in the scorching heat in the Lebanese capital, while carrying his sleeping daughter on his shoulder.

After the heartbreaking photo went viral on the internet, a crowdfunding was started in his name. Gissur Simonarson, founder of Conflict News created the twitter account @butpens and an Indigo page to raise $5,000 (£3306) for Abdul and his family.

After three months, the campaign had far surpassed its goal – it raised £186,282 allowing him to open three businesses and employ other asylum seekers. In the last two months, the 33-year-old father of two was able to first open a bakery, and then later a kebab shop and a small restaurant. He also gave away about £16,530 to friends and relatives in Syria.

"Not only did my life change, but also the lives of my children and the lives of people in Syria whom I helped," Abdul said.

Abdul have also moved with his children from their small one bedroom to a two bedroom flat in an unfurnished building in southern Beirut. His wife returned to Syria, and they are currently separated.
While the apartment is sparsely furnished, his four-year-old daughter Reem – who was sleeping on her dad's shoulder in the viral photo have few new toys to play with. After three years of being at home, his nine-year-old son Abdullelah, has now gone back to school.

A young woman wearing only a white shirt and panties was seen at a Taxi park in northern KZN, South Africa. According to Daily Sun SA, who shared the photo, the incident happened on Tuesday evening. Commuters, taxi men and passersby looked on in shock when the woman appeared. When she realised that people were staring, making cat calls, taking photos and laughing, she jumped into a taxi and took out a skirt from one of her bags and put on.

An eyewitness, Bongani Zondi said people at first thought she was mentally unstable but later realised she was not.
"She looked fine. But it was the first time a thing like this has happened at our taxi rank. That's why people got excited and took pictures,"

He added the police were called to ease the situation and they took the woman away.
Chairman for Nguthu Taxi Association, Mthandeni Ndlovu who confirmed the incident said they were surprised to see a half-naked woman at their park.

FIFA officials stole $750,000 meant for Haiti earthquake victims- U.S attorney general

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 08:37 AM PST

The United States department of Justice in conjunction with Swiss police have released new indictments following the 6.a.m arrests of two FIFA Vice-presidents, Alfredo Hawit of Honduras and Juan Angel Napout of Paraguay, in Zurich yesterday. A total of 16 officials have been laced with fresh corruption charges for sums totalling $200million dollars mostly relating to TV and marketing deals in north, south and central America and the Caribbean.

The most shocking detail in the new indictment is the new revelation involving officials who were indicted following arrests last May namely Jack Warner and Jeffrey Webb who has already pleaded guilty to seven charges, but this men in the most inhumane of professional characters embezzled money meant for Haiti Relief victims..

Webb, a banker from the Cayman Islands, has pleaded guilty to racketeering conspiracy, three counts of wire fraud conspiracy and three counts of money laundering conspiracy. As part of his Webb's plea, he agreed to forfeit more than $6.7m dollars.

Warner diverted $750,000 in emergency funds donated by FIFA and the Korean Football Association intended for victims of the 2010 Haiti earthquake. He is currently fighting extradition by U.S authorities from Trinidad to the USA.

The indictment states: "The conspirators' corruption of the enterprise extended beyond the payment and receipt of bribes and kickbacks.

"FIFA's provision of money - which totalled in the hundreds of millions of dollars - to its member associations in connection with the Goal Program, Financial Assistance Program (FAP), and other programs created opportunities for officials to embezzle or otherwise fraudulently appropriate funding intended to benefit FIFA's member associations and their constituent organisations, including youth leagues.

"Certain of the defendants and their co-conspirators, including the defendant Jack Warner and Jeffrey Webb, took advantage of these opportunities and embezzled or otherwise personally appropriated funds provided by FIFA, including funds intended for natural disaster relief."
US attorney general Loretta Lynch speaking in Washington DC said : "The betrayal of trust is truly outrageous."

Speaking to FIFA Officials she said,
"You will not wait us out and you will not escape our focus."

Very graphic photo: Woman allegedly beheads 2yr old son in Kano

I have no way of confirming this story but according to the person who posted it on Facebook, this woman beheaded her 2 year old son in a fit of anger in Kano state. When neighbours saw her blood stained clothes, they went into her home to find her son's head separated from her body. The woman later confessed that she beheaded the boy because he was uncontrollable and had attacked her. See the graphic photo of the little boy's decapitated head after the cut ...it's quite gruesome... *viewer's discretion advised*
