Donald Trump has three words for those criticising his call to ban Muslims from entering the U.S. Posted: 08 Dec 2015 12:16 PM PST Following the wave of criticisms that greeted his call for a complete ban on Muslims entering the United States, Donald Trump has responded by telling a cheering crowd at his South Carolina rally on Monday: "I. Don't. Care." Continuing, the candidate for the Republican presidential ticket said, "We have to do it. They think they are going to change our religion. I dont think so. I don't think so...not going to happen." Trump acknowledged that while he knew his call for barring all Muslim foreigners from entering the United States is " probably not politically correct", he was leading the "noisy majority". "We used to call it the quiet majority, but people are fed up...they are fed up with incompetence, they are fed up with stupid leaders, they are fed up with stupid people," he said. |
FG to re-introduce Toll at Federal roads- Fashola Posted: 08 Dec 2015 12:13 PM PST Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola has hinted that the Federal government will be re-introducing tolls at Federal roads in Nigeria. Fashola says the money generated from the tolls will be used for the maintenance of the roads. He said this during his first news conference tagged 'Setting the Agenda for Delivering Change' in Abuja today December 8th... "Maintenance would be our watchword. We are setting up a robust maintenance regime to keep our highways in good shape. This shows that tolling is necessary to support government funding. So, it will not be too much if we ask every road user to pay little to augment government funding for road maintence. It is eminent commonsense for us to find that money. We will use technology; so if we don't pay cash, you will pay by tokens or tickets and the money is accountable and it will go to the right place. We will manage that fund properly and we will hold those who we put there to account." he said |

Fayose presents N67billion 2016 budget to Ekiti House Posted: 08 Dec 2015 11:08 AM PST The Ekiti State governor, Bashorun Peter Ayodele Fayose, has presented the state House of Assembly the 2016 budget totaling N67 billion. According to the House Speaker's Special Assistant (Media), Stephen Gbadamosi, the governor presented the document to the Speaker, Right Honourable (Pastor) Kola Oluwawole, at a brief ceremony during the House plenary on Tuesday. The Speaker, in his welcome address, while praising the governor for his people-centred policies, admonished the people of the state to pray for quick economic recovery of the state. "I enjoin the good people of Ekiti to pray to God to reverse the situation for good as quick as possible. Mr. Governor has been a great manager of men and resources. This explains why the ship of Ekiti State is still sailing despite the troubled water. God will intervene. "Your Excellency, the Year 2016 budget has been structured within the expected revenue profile of the state. It is in line with the sound logic of cutting your coat according to your cloth. "The budget, by the grace of God, will address the cardinal programmes of Mr. Governor for the State. Ekiti people will reap maximally the dividends of democracy under the leadership of Dr. Peter Ayodele Fayose. "I want to assure Mr. Governor that the House will swing into action on the Budget with a view to giving it expeditious consideration and passage into Appropriation Law. The Honourable Members and the Legislative bureaucrats will work round the clock. Since the House has been duly carried along in the entire budget process, I am therefore, confident that the budget will have a smooth sail. The relevant Committees of the House will monitor every stage in the implementation of the Budget," he said. According to the governor, the governor took pragmatic steps in preparing the financial document, hence, it was Christened "Budget of Reality." He said that despite the paucity of funds, the government would begin payment of N5,000 allowances to not less than 10,000 underprivileged persons in the state, while admonishing the people of the state to understand the need for them to pay their taxes promptly. He promised that copies of the document would be sent to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), among others, so that they could monitor the implementation. He said this was based on his conviction that it was unrealistic for any leader to steal his state's funds without dire consequences. The presentation was witnessed by traditional rulers, lawmakers, members of the governor's cabinet, government functionaries and leaders of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). |
2 men find €100k at the river, return to police & could get 5% of the money back Posted: 08 Dec 2015 08:46 AM PST This happened to two Austrian men. They went to relax near the Danube river in Vienna, when the mega bucks floated by and they dived to collect it. "On Saturday morning at 10 a.m., people called the police, as there were two young men in the Danube river apparently trying to retrieve cash," said Patrick Maierhofer, a spokesman for the Vienna Police.Police arrived on the scene within minutes and saw that the men had retrieved the money which they handed over to them... "So ... where did the money come from? There are many possibilities," police spokesman said. "But we think it is from a crime. In any normal case, someone wouldn't throw 100,000 euros in a river." The young men who found the money -- one is 20, the other 22, police said -- will get 5% of it for having turned it over to police. But now the men in order to claim all the money, have to hope for two circumstances: that the money was indeed from a crime, so no one approaches police to claim it is theirs, and that the crime goes unsolved, so police have no way of returning it to the rightful owner. |
Cut Fossil-Fuel subsidies to benefit both rich & poor - Ngozi Okonjo Iweala writes Posted: 08 Dec 2015 08:38 AM PST Article written by former Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for Financial Times.
The idea is not a new one. In 2009, the G20 countries and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum committed themselves to cutting inefficient subsidies but progress has been limited. But in the context of the decline in oil prices, which benefits consumers, we have a golden opportunity to deliver reform. About 30 countries, including my own, Nigeria, have already made efforts to phase out fossil-fuel subsidies. In spite of the difficulties, it is well worth the effort. In 2012 in Nigeria we reformed petrol subsidies. Conscious that the public might be concerned, we ran an information campaign to explain how the savings would be used to help everyone. Political pressure, however, led to the policy being introduced earlier than planned and, as a result, the changescame as a shock to many. This led to protests and the reform had to be partially rolled back. Despite this, we were right to act. Even phasing out half of the subsidies was a substantial achievement. Some $13bn worth of petrol subsidies, including many fraudulent claims, had burdened the national budget, and we were able to redirect some of those funds. Within a year, our programme to reinvest the savings meant we could finish the renovation of a north-south national railway, as well as introduce improved maternal and childcare services in 500 primary healthcare centres. Using lessons learnt from Nigeria and other countries we can put together a set of best practices to follow. These include co-ordinated communication, implementation and redistribution efforts. Reform should also create a broad sense of political ownership, especially in fiscally decentralised countries. One of the most common concerns about removing subsidies is that it will hurt the poor. But in reality the subsidies benefit high-income populations and industry much more than low-income households. The International Monetary Fund has estimated that more than 40 per cent of fuel price subsidies in developing countries accrue to the richest 20 per cent of households, while 7 per cent of the benefits go to the poorest 20 per cent. It makes more sense to remove subsidies and redirect cash into investments that go directly to those who need it most. That was the aim of Nigeria's programme and it is being tried elsewhere. In Germany and Poland, for example, coal subsidy reforms were supported by cash assistance for workers affected by mine closures. Governments attempting reform should tell the public well in advance of fuel price rises, and clearly explain measures that will be taken to support those affected. Ghana, for example, successfully used radio broadcasts to publicise an independent poverty and social impact analysis of subsidies. Most of the best reform attempts have been staggered over time, rather than applied at once. Angola, India and Peru, for example, are first reducing subsidies for petrol, used mainly by wealthier people, before reducing those for diesel and kerosene, which are used by lower-income groups. The benefits extend beyond the economic. Done correctly, phasing out subsidies will have the added bonus of lowering greenhouse gas emissions and reducing air pollution. In the context of the current effort to secure a global agreement of measures to combat climate change, that is great opportunity. Governments should seize it. Credit: Financial Times |
