Anambra state University renamed Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 12:53 PM PDT

The Anambra House of Assembly on today September 11th passed a bill, changing the name of the state-owned university at Uli to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University.

The bill was passed during the plenary of the legislature in Awka to honour the former Biafra hero.
The decision followed the report of the House Committee on Education which recommended the change of the name. Continue...

Mrs Rita Maduagwu (APGA Nnewi South 2), the Chairman, House Committee on Education, recalled that the bill had been read the second time on the floor of the house on Dec. 17, 2013.
She said that the committee found that the university's name had been changed before from Anambra State University of Science and Technology and that there were a number of provisions in the extant law that required review.

"After due consideration of facts and information, the committee recommends that the law establishing the university be repealed while a new law aimed at amending the principal law be passed," Maduagwu said.

Mr Valentine Ayika (PDP Njikoka1) said that the bill was due for passage since it was read second time in December 2013.

Mr Tony Muonagor (APC Idemili North) said that the aim was to immortalise the late Ojukwu and to encourage hard work among the people of the state and Nigeria at large.

Mr Ebele Obi (APC Idemili South) said that the passage was a welcome development.
Mr Obinna Emenakaya (APGA Anambra East) said that the application for the change of name was long over-due since it was meant to immortalise a man who fought and lived for the Igbo people.
The Speaker, Mrs Chinwe Nwaebili, said that the university would be a multi-campus institution located in Awka, Igbariam and Uli.

She said members of the committee on education did a good work and urged others to prove their worth on any assignment given at committee level or otherwise

All these Nnkan 'nbe stories. Read this one below from News Agency of Nigeria, NAN.
A Minna Chief Magistrates' Court on Thursday ordered the remand of a 55-year-old woman, Fatima Tsaraka for allegedly killing her grandson. The accused it was alleged abducted her grandson, took him to a nearby bush where she and two others slaughtered him, made a meal of his flesh and drank his blood.
Tsaraka, arraigned alongside Amina Mohammed, 65, and Zhitsun Aliyu, 38, is facing a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide and cannibalism. Continue

The accused were arraigned on Sept. 1, but the prosecutor requested an adjournment to enable police conclude investigation. At the resumed hearing of the case, the Magistrate, Mr Hamidu Bima, ordered the continued detention of the accused pending legal advice from the State Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

Bima subsequently adjourned the case to Sept. 25. Earlier, the Prosecutor, Cpl. Moses Mbaga, had told the court that the victim's father, Mr Mohammed Doko of Koso Village, Lavun Local Government Area, reported the matter at `A' Division Police Station, Bida, on Aug. 15.

GEJ won't interfere with ongoing investigation of accusation against Ali Modu Sheriff

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 09:20 AM PDT

Find the State House press release below...

We have noted with surprise, the unnecessary hue and cry raised by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other bigoted critics of the Jonathan Administration over the claim that the President is "hobnobbing" with the former governor of Borno State, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff who was recently accused by the Australian, Stephen Davis of being one of the chief sponsors of the terrorist group, Boko Haram. Continue...

The totally erroneous basis for that charge was the spurious claim that Senator Sheriff accompanied President Jonathan on his recent trip to Ndjamena as a member of his entourage.

Although Senator Sheriff himself has already given the lie to that claim through his Media Adviser, the Presidency wishes to affirm, for the purpose of emphasis, that the former Borno State governor was not on President Jonathan's delegation to Chad.
In keeping with          President Jonathan's commitment to transparency and openness in the conduct of government business, names of the key members of his delegation were announced a day before his trip to Ndjamena.
They included the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd.), the Minister of Communications Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Nurudeen Mohammed and the Director-General of National Space Research and Development Agency, Prof. Seidu Mohammed.
As can be easily verified from the complete list of members of the Presidential entourage to Chad which was also circulated on Sunday and never changed, Senator Sheriff's name was not on it. The only other persons on the list were the President's aides, security personnel and journalists.
The APC and others who rushed to condemn President Jonathan for a non-existent indiscretion would have found, if they took the least trouble to double-check, that there was absolutely no factual basis for their accusation.
Those who associate with Senator Sheriff know that he has longstanding interests in Chad and often spends a lot of his time there. He happened to be in Ndjamena at the time of President Jonathan's visit and joined other Nigerian residents of the Chadian capital in coming to the airport to welcome their President.
That was the full extent of his participation in the visit and it was also at Ndjamena Airport that the pictures which formed the basis of the bogus allegation of President Jonathan hobnobbing with an "accused sponsor of terrorism" were taken.
The former Governor's presence in Chad was certainly not at President Jonathan's instance and he did not participate in any of the President's discussions with President Idriss Deby or his other engagements in Ndjamena.
President Jonathan is fully aware of the allegation made against Senator Sheriff by Stephen Davis. That allegation is already being investigated by the security agencies who will make their findings known to the public in due course.
The President assures all Nigerians that he has not willfully taken any action that could prejudice the outcome of that ongoing inquiry.
He seizes this opportunity to reassure the nation once again of his total commitment to doing all within his powers to bring all identified and verified sponsors of terrorism to justice, and ending the menace of violent extremism in the country.

Mike Tyson curses out host live on TV after host mentions his rape conviction

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 09:08 AM PDT

The host had it coming so I kinda don't blame Mike Tyson. The former world champion is currently in Toronto to perform his critically acclaimed one man show 'Mike Tyson: The Undisputed Truth.', and while there, Tyson met with infamous crack smoking Toronto Mayor, Rob Ford.

While promoting his show the next day (on Wednesday morning) on a popular Canadian morning TV talk show, the host, Nathan Downer, asked Mike if it were a good idea for him to meet the Mayor during an election year considering Mike was a convicted rapist, implying that Mike meeting the Mayor could damage the Mayor's reputation. Mike flipped after that.

Mike called the host a piece of s**t and told him f**k you repeatedly live on air.
"You're being negative.You're really a piece of s--t. F--k you!"
When the host reminded Tyson that he was on live TV, Mike responded, "I don't care. What are you going to do about it?" See the video after the cut...

Beninoise man arrainged in court for stealing Chris Ayanwu's N10m, Jewellery

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 08:02 AM PDT

A 33 year old Beninoise man identified as Brouno Amoussou was today Sept. 11th arraigned before the Igbosere Magistrate Court for allegedly conspiring to steal N10million cash, land documents and expensive jewelries from the home of Senator Chris Anyanwu, a serving senator representing Imo state at the National Assembly.

According to the prosecutor of the case, Cpl Innocent Odugbo, the suspect, a resident of 221, Temple Heights, Flat 6, Banana Island, Lagos, had in July this year conspired with one Alex Sossou, a cook who is currently at large, to steal from the senator's house. Continue...
The prosecutor said Amoussou had sometime back introduced Sossou as a cook to Senator Anyanwu and even stood as a guarantor for Sossou to be employed as a cook by the Senator at her Imo state house. Upon his arrival at her home, Sossou is alleged to have broken into a safe in her bedroom and stole the cash, jewelry as well as her land documents. He thereafter absconded to his village in the Republic of Benin. Efforts to get him arrested have so far yielded no result.

The accused, Amoussou pleaded not guilty to the charge of theft and conspiracy. The Magistrate, Mrs O.O. Olanipekun granted him bail in the sum of N10million with two sureties in the same sum and adjourned the case to October 13th for hearing.

Nigerian man arrested for abducting & raping a woman in the US

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 10:17 AM PDT

29 year old Nigerian man based in Brookline, Pennsylvania, Samuel Okorie is accused of grabbing a woman at a public place and sexually assaulting her. The incident took place over the weekend in a residential neighbourhood.

According to police report, early Sunday morning, police came to the house (right), in Brookline and arrested Samuel Okorie. He was booked on charges including rape, kidnapping  and robbery. A 21 year old woman identified Okorie as the man who sexually assaulted her. Police say the victim ran up the street, crying for help. Neighbours said she was screaming 'help me, help me'. When a neighbour approached her, she said "he raped me, he's coming to get me.".

He's such a good looking guy, why would he turn to rape? And then the story is somehow. Continue..

Police report says Okorie grabbed the woman from behind near a gas station on Saturday night, grabbed her cellphone and pushed her into nearby bushes where he sexually assaulted her. Reports states that Okorie then dragged the girl to his home where another sexual assault took place.

Detectives said the victim attempted to escape many times but was restrained by Okorie. Eventually she did manage to get away and ended up at a neighbour's house down the street, who then called the police.

Neighbours described Okorie as quiet, friendly and were surprised he was involved in something like this.

He has been arrested and is currently held at the Allegheny county jail. His bail is set for $150,000. A hearing is scheduled for next week.

Oscar Pistorius may be found guilty of manslaughter; what the judge said

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 08:25 AM PDT

The judge didn't find Oscar Pistorius guilty of murder but from what she said this afternoon, it looks like she's planning to find him guilty of manslaughter. Whether it will carry a prison sentence remains to be seen. Below are some of the things judge Masipa said this afternoon;

*He was negligent
*He could have run to the balcony and screamed. He could have called security.
*He was reckless, acted in haste and used excessive force
*He had other options but chose to use a loaded gun
*He could have run to the balcony and called for help like he did after the shooting
*He could have called for help in less time it took to shoot through the door.
*He had reasonable time to reflect and think
*There was no explanation why Oscar didn't call security before arming himself and going to the bathroom.
*If he woke and found someone over him and opened fire, that would have been excusable conduct. Continue...

*Many people suffer from crime but not everyone sleeps with a firearm under their bed
*His conduct could be explained by looking at his past. But that does not excuse his conduct.
*Growing up in crime-riddled environment with a paranoid mother is just an explaination not excuse
*Many South Africans grew up in crime-riddled environment, they don't go about killing others
*Explains that the court must use the test of the reasonable man to determine whether Oscar was negligent.
*The test for negligence: weather a reasonable person would have foreseen the reasonable possibility of the consequence.
*Defence said conduct of Oscar was brought about by several factors like lack of burglar bars on windows

The court was adjourned and will resume at 9.30am tomorrow...

Breaking News: Judge finds Oscar Pistorius not guilty of murder

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 04:30 AM PDT

Judge Masipa has read much of her judgement and she's just found Oscar Pistorius not guilty of murder. The judge said there were not enough facts to prove the most serious charge of pre-meditated murder. She said the case was based entirely on circumstantial evidence and dismissed the witness testimony. She said the witnesses were unreliable as they were confused when giving testimony and said most of what they said weren't accurate. She said even if Oscar was evasive with some facts, and was a 'very poor' witness, it doesn't mean he's guilty of murder.

She explained that Oscar's reaction after killing Reeva shows he didn't have criminal intent, hadn't foreseen he'd killed her. She said he could not have faked his reaction minutes after the shooting. She even dismissed the whatsapp message between the lovers, saying relationships are dynamic. She also said evidence did not support the state's claim of second degree murder.
"The state has not proved beyond reasonable doubt that the accused is guilty of premeditated murder. There are just not enough facts to support such a finding'- she said.
While he's not guilty of premeditated murder, he awaits to find out if he's guilty of culpable homicide (manslaughter) which is the negligent death of another. It means there was no intention to kill but the killing is unlawful. The court has adjourned for early lunch.

A Night to Build: Call to Action

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 01:48 AM PDT

This October, Nigerians at home and in Diaspora will celebrate with the clinking of glasses and a million hurrays, the 54th independence anniversary of our country from good old Britain.

In the build-up to that date, there will be dissenting voices as usual protesting the stunted growth of the country and pointing out that there is a long way to go. Few organizations however w ill make any attempt to arrest this slide into irredeemability and fewer still will have their efforts centered around youth, the epicentre of the nation and the future of governance. Continue...

Nigeria Dialogue, the think-tank of young Nigerian professionals around the globe passionate for a departure from the diseased norm, will however be ticking all the boxes right. It will be holding a series of gala nights aimed at bringing together the men and women who can change the future of Nigeria in the coming decades.

From Atlanta to Houston, Baltimore and Toronto across the US of A and Canada, this event, aptly tagged 'Let Us Build' will be an opportunity for massive networking, fine dining and more. Those charged with the task of energizing us on those nights to save our country include Rauf Aregbesola, Obiageli Ezekwesili, Pat Utomi, Rotimi Amaechi, Abike Dabiri, Sam Amadi, Abdulmumuni Jibrin and more.

Participants will have the opportunity to rub minds with the finest of company and learn firsthand the experience in governance the aforementioned have accumulated over the years, as well as learn how to combat the many challenges involved.

There will be no better platform this September - for Nigerians in the Diaspora - to feed your patriotism fat and watch it morph into actual willpower to participate in changing the fortunes of our motherland and finding solutions to the multitude if problems that envelop our land.

You - and the over 2 million Nigerians - scattered all over the globe also have the opportunity to be part of our 37th State Initiative and speak as one formidable voice - the voice of change - enthusiastic about actually changing about the state of the nation, rather than consistently complaining only. In 2013, Nigerians in Diaspora contributed $21billion alone - as figures from the World Bank show - to the economy if the state. Who's to say we can't do more in 2014 and subsequent years?

Nigeria is ours to build, to tweak and to reinforce. Our knowledge in art, technology, innovation and policy formulation is key. There is no better time to start than now and no other group as equipped to lead change as us.

Nigerian Teachers threaten to strike over new resumption date

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 01:28 AM PDT

The Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT, have threatened to go on a nationwide strike if the Federal government does not shift the date of resumption as well as put in place measures that would protect their members from contracting the deadly Ebola virus while teaching in schools.

Speaking in a telephone interview with Punch, the National President of the NUT, Michael Alogba, said the union had taken a decision not to allow any of its members go into any school to teach if the eradication of the deadly virus has not been scientifically and medically proven. Continue...

"In any sane society, decision such as this will not be taken until the government and all stakeholders have met and discussed the issue at stake and are sure that the nation is scientifically and medical free from the scourge. But this is not the case in our country. When they arrived at the early October 13 date, they wrote us and we agreed with their argument but when this new date was given, they did not because of the influence of some powerful school owners who put pressure on them (Federal Government) to announce the September 22 date. Anyway, we have written to tell them that if the   Federal Government does not shift the date and provide all necessary safety measures in schools before Monday next week, all NUT leaders will meet in Abuja by 9am on Tuesday to decide our fate by ourselves. Though I don't want to preempt the outcome of the meeting but as teachers who have families and who should protect our future, I mean our students, we will shun the classes; we will call for strike. What kind of government is this, don't they know that children can never be as hygienic as adults? Don't they know that the immunity level of children is not as high as that of adults? Why do you want to open schools when you have not cleared out the virus; when you still have about 400 people under surveillance in Port Harcourt and Lagos? You are aware of what is happening at the Obafemi Awolowo University. How are we sure that there is no primary or secondary school pupil that has had   contact with an Ebola patient. It's good that the   NMA (Nigerian Medical Association) has spoken and we have told them too that we would not cooperate with them. That   is why we are going to take a drastic action on Tuesday to protect ourselves and our children. I can tell you that we will shun schools; we won't cooperate with them. In other words, we will embark on strike." he said
He warned that if by next Monday, September 15th the Federal Government had not extended the new date, the executive council would meet by Tuesday 16th September where a drastic decision would be taken.

Meanwhile after the Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja yesterday the Health Minister said there was no going back on the resumption date. According to him, there was no scientific basis for school resumption date to be postponed
"First unlike other countries, there is no community transmission of the disease in Nigeria; not one yet. But we have taken precautions, what we are doing, we may as well have said everybody should just be moving about, but we are taking precautions. There is no scientific basis for school resumption to be postponed. There is no community transmission of the disease in Nigeria. That is what separates Nigeria from other countries. It is what I call irrational fear; we don't need to be irrational about this." he said
The Nigerian Medical Association as well as the House of Representative Committee on Education have spoken against the new resumption date.

A concerned Nigerian Mom on Ebola and resumption of schools

Posted: 11 Sep 2014 12:48 AM PDT

Article below is written by a concerned Nigerian mum named Efe Farinre. It seems a lot of mums are against the resumption of primary and secondary schools on September 22nd despite the Minister of Health saying there's currently no single case of Ebola in Nigeria. Anyway read this mum's concern below and tell us what you think.
I just received a mail confirming that schools will re-open on Monday 22nd September, 2014. After reading it, I felt compelled to put on paper my thoughts since the announcement of same by the Federal Government. One thing that struck me is that I am yet to receive information about confirmed (not advised/suggested) nationwide measures that have been put in place to ensure the safety of our children from the Ebola virus upon resumption at school in two weeks." Continue...
The reason for moving the resumption date forward by three weeks was given as "containment of the Ebola virus in Nigeria". How does that statement stand in view of the present situation in Port Harcourt?

I returned to Lagos from a week's trip to Abuja on Friday 5th September, 2014. The first issue I had, which I mentioned to an airport official was that just before boarding the planes (in Lagos and Abuja), passengers (adults and children) are given a rub-down. The officials checking our bodies were wearing gloves. However, the same gloves were worn while touching a good number of people.
The officials were protected, but how about the passengers being touched with the gloves that had been used to touch many others? On arrival at the Abuja airport, the temperature of every passenger was taken before entry was granted into the Federal Capital Territory. Of concern is that on departure from Abuja, this was not the case. Worse still, Lagos State that had the index case of Ebola welcomed us without any precautionary measures of any kind. We simply picked up our bags and walked into the city. With instances where infected people have traveled from one state to another, we should be worried.

It is understandable that we want our children educated, but we need to be reminded that we can only educate the healthy and living. Ebola virus in Nigeria is an unprecedented occurrence that has to be handled as such. "Better safe than sorry" should be the motto here. So far, we have been blessed in the manner that no child has contacted the disease. Children play indiscriminately with one another.
A child of what age can be guaranteed to identify the symptoms of the Ebola and keep away from it? How many times do we have to remind our children not to put their hands in their mouths and cover their mouths when they yawn, cough or sneeze? How do we tell them not to play with their friends as they are used to or not to show concern if one of them gets hurt and is bleeding? How can we really be sure that our 3 to 16 year olds would be safe from Ebola in a place where we cannot control who they come in contact with; a place where they share toilets, eat and play with others. How about our babies at crèche who we can't even attempt to explain this to and who cannot verbalize their day at "school"?

I am the typical "Nigerian Mum"….ensuring my kids are on top of their school work, home work and leisure activities. At this time, I must pause and realize that prevention is the only option here as there is no cure! If the children have to stay home a little longer while this epidemic is eradicated or contained NATIONWIDE then so be it. If this implies a shorter Christmas break this year or just four weeks of Summer break next year to make up for the lost education time, so be it.
One thing I am sure no parent wants to deal with is the anxiety if a child comes home with a fever. We all know that at school, children love to share all things with one another from the water in their bottles to the flu. Then again, which parents want to have to take their child to the hospital these days?

If the doctor in Port Harcourt could go to work for some days after being infected with Ebola then we should be more concerned. This was an educated person, in fact someone who knew the consequences of his actions more than most, but he still put others at risk. Worst of all, these were colleagues and patients who could not tell from his demeanor that he was sick. They trusted him and could never have imagined that he would expose them to a deadly virus.

To our leaders, I ask what control measures against Ebola have been put in place in ALL schools, particularly the government and state schools? I visited a private school in Abuja and before we could go in, our temperatures where taken. We should remember that even if private schools are well catered for, the children of our drivers, domestic helps and "junior staff" attend public schools.

How many infrared thermometers have been distributed across these schools in Nigeria? Who would be responsible for taking the temperature of EVERYONE going into ALL schools? Since a symptom of Ebola is sudden fever, how often would the temperatures of students need to be taken in the course of the day? What Ebola emergency responses have been set up by location of ALL schools in Nigeria? What awareness has been carried out in the villages and remote areas of the country, where we have schools too? How will adherence to control measures (if and when they are in place) against Ebola in Nigerian schools be monitored, by whom and how frequently? What steep penalties have been put in place for schools that default?

As a parent I want to see action and not hear words! In a country where a nurse can flee quarantine and a primary contact with the index case can evade detection, with both of them traveling across state lines, I demand action from government before our children are asked to return to school. It's not enough to ask "Ministries of Education in the 36 states of Nigeria to appoint desk officers on Ebola before resumption or that they should ensure that at least two staff in each school (public and private) are trained by appropriate health workers on how to handle any suspected case of Ebola, should in case there's one or workers should embark on immediate sensitization of teaching and non-teaching staff in schools on preventive measures", ALL STATE MINISTRIES OF EDUCATION and SCHOOLS (PUBLIC & PRIVATE) MUST be MANDATED and SUFFICENTLY EQUIPPED with ALL RESOURCES to ensure Ebola virus does not hit our children.

In Nigeria, it's just schools that are closed. In some other African countries, communities are closed-in.

Now is the time to speak up, so that never happens to us. In my opinion, there are still too many unanswered questions and too many checks to be put in place before schools can resume. Parents, let's preserve our lineage. Government, let's preserve the future of Nigeria. Together, let's preserve the lives of ALL Nigerian children.
