Photos: 55 year old armed robbery gang leader paraded with in Lagos

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 01:38 PM PDT

A 55 year old man named Chief Jude Dike (pictured above) who police say is the sponsor and leader of a 7-man gang was today September 23rd paraded alongside six other members of his gang at the Lagos state police headquarters in Ikeja.

The others paraded are; Joel Eghon, 38, Solomon Igwe, 32, Ifeanyi Onwuegbuchi, 34, Emmanuel Ifeanyi, 34, Ejike Emegwo, 31, and Leonard Afoaku, 39 over robbery allegations.

According to PM news, Chief Dike, a resident of Ajegunle, confessed to being the sponsor of the robbers by providing them with weapons for their operation and facilitating the sales of whatever they steal from any of their operations.

Speaking on how they were arrested, the State Commissioner of Police, Cornelius Aderanti said on September 20th, information got to him that some armed robbers who had earlier snatched a Toyota Hiace bus around Ebute Metta were planning another operation. He immediately instructed men of the State Anti Robbery Squad, SARS, to chase after the robbers. They were arrested and the stolen Toyota car recovered.

Also a Barretta pistol with serial number P17531 and ammunition were recovered from them. When interrogated, 55 year old Dike confessed to the crime saying he got into the business by accident and continued because it was very lucrative. The suspects will soon be charged to court, according to the police....

APC lawmakers walk out of session in protest over $9.3m smuggled to SA

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 01:27 PM PDT

There was major drama in the House of Reps today September 23rd after APC lawmakers staged a walk out during a session in the House after a motion to debate the $9.3m smuggled into South Africa by two Nigerians on behalf of the Federal Govt on September 5th was denied by PDP lawmakers.

According to reports, the APC lawmakers had moved a motion through the the House Deputy Minority Leader, Ismaila Kawu to debate the matter on the floor of the House but the motion was stopped after a voice note called by the deputy speaker, Mr Emeka Ihedioha went in favor of the majority PDP members.

After the walkout, the Minority Whip leader, Samson Osagie spoke on behalf of APC members...

He said;
"For us as a people and for us as lawmakers, we find this unacceptable, unethical, illegitimate and in our view, it is an illegal transaction. Nigerian government owes the Nigerian people an explanation as to what that source of money comes from and the purpose for which it was made. If indeed, the matter involves security issues like the purchase of arms by foreign government like Nigeria, why was the South African government not brought into the picture before hand and how could South African government be sure that the arms were purchased legitimately by the Nigerian government and not by the insurgents when there were no officials of the NSA's office or the Director of state security department that accompany such money?"

Defence HQ responds to story on alleged release of Chibok girls

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 11:49 AM PDT

According to the earlier report, which the Nigeria military has since denied, two Toyota Hiace buses carrying girls suspected to be Chibok girls this afternoon drove into Maimalari Barracks, the headquarters of the 7th Division of the Nigerian army in Maimalari with heavy security...but the military is now saying the bus load of individuals were not Chibok girls

Breaking: Defence HQ says Chibok girls were rescued, then withdraws statement

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 11:24 AM PDT

Found this breaking news report on Premium Times. Apparently the Nigeria military said today that some schoolgirls abducted from Chibok town in April this year had been rescued by Nigerian troops only to retract the statement minutes later. Read the report below...
The Defence Headquarters has retracted its earlier statement confirming the rescue of the abducted Chibok girls. The spokesperson for the defence headquarters, Chris Olukolade, had told Premium Times that a yet unclear number of the girls had been freed and driven in two Toyota Hiace buses to the Maimalari Barracks, the headquarters of the 7th Division of the Nigerian Army in Maiduguri. But less than 30 minutes after he spoke to us, Mr. Olukolade called back to say he was withdrawing his earlier statement.
He said he had been having difficulty establishing contact with his colleagues in Maiduguri and that he was no longer sure that the girls driven into the barracks were newly rescued. Mr. Olukolade had told this newspaper the girls had been freed and that the rescue exercise was still ongoing and that appropriate statement would be made later. Premium Times has also learnt that the girls driven into the Maimalari barracks were those who escaped earlier from the Boko Haram sect. The over 200 girls, mostly teenagers, were kidnapped from their secondary school in Chibok, Borno State, on April 14. With the military withdrawing its statement, it now does appear the girls are still in captivity

Maltina Dance All 8: Curtain Falls for Oladapo, Nwaeze Families

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 11:15 AM PDT

The curtain has fallen for the Oladapo and Nwaeze families as they became the second set of families to exit the ongoing Maltina Dance All (MDA) family dance show. They were evictedafter being put up for possible eviction from the 'Rhythm of Naija' and 'New Age' dance performances. They now join the Leonard and Maisamari families who left the show last week.

The three judges - Muyiwa Oshinaike, Jeffery Page and Comfort Fedoke - had carefully deliberated on the families that will be put up for possible eviction.

The Uzodinma and Utere familieshad earlier been selected for possible eviction alongside the Oladapo and Nwaeze families who were selected for possible eviction after their below the bar performances at the various performance shows. The four families had to come back on stage to finetune their routinesin the 'Rhythm of Naija' and 'New Age' dance performance to maintain their slots in the academy.

After the Rhythm of Naija the "dancer of the night" was Jane from the Uzodinma family. The dancers of the night stand a chance of selecting the order of performance for the next dance style in the academy.

The Oladapo family on hearing their name as one of the families up for possible evictionfor the second time came on stage promising to fight their way back as they assured the judges and the audience that they will come back the next day to give their best and maintain their spot in the academy. But, they were unable to impress the judges with their performance at the eviction show down which earned them the way home.

Senior Brand Manager Maltina Mr. Wole Adedeji said Maltina Dance All is one way among many that NB Plc is restating its brand values. "MDA is about the dancer's creative ability, knowledge of different dance styles, stamina and fitness. The task is no doubt enormous but it is a delight to see the result it has been producing in the last 7 seasons. Some of the dancers have taken their career further than the Maltina Dance All stage; while some are dancing locally others are doing it internationally". He revealed.

The Maltina Dance All season 8 winning family will now take home N10 million while the first and  second runners up will take home N3 million and N1million respectively. The show is in tune with the brands promise of "Sharing happiness," creating excitement, fun and nourishment for the entire family, it is equally a reality show where families strive to outdo each other by showcasing different types of dance steps and styles to compete for the star prize.

Ghanaian footballer Asamoah Gyan denies using his friend for ritual

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 10:03 AM PDT

This is so silly but some of you might want to read it. Ghanaian star and former Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan has been bizarrely accused of having a hand in the death of his friend, Ghanaian rapper Castro. Some people in Ghana are accusing Gyan of using Castro for human sacrifice ritual.

In July, Theophilus Tagoe, popularly known as Castro, went missing while on holiday with Gyan and other friends. The musician was presumed to have drowned in a jet ski accident, but his body was never found which led to the allegations against the striker, with his family constantly being hounded by Ghanaian press. The football star (pictured left) and his family have denied having a hand in what happened but the accusations are refusing to go away because of the lack of a body.

Gyan and Castro
Gyan announced on his website today that he will be holding a press conference to finally address and bring some clarity to the matter
"The Gyan Family will hold a press conference on Wednesday to address recent issues of public interest including the disappearance of musical icon Theophilus Tagoe (aka Castro)."
"It will be recalled that Theophilus Tagoe (aka Castro) and Janet Bandu went missing while on a holiday hangout with Family and Friends of the Gyans at a resort in Ada back in July. Relentless efforts are still being made to find the missing duo.
"The opportunity will also be used to officially respond to some allegations and untruths bundled about in the media over the role of Asamoah Gyan in the duos disappearance," the statement read.

Why I published the TB Joshua bribery audio - Nicholas Ibekwe

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 07:23 AM PDT

Nicholas Ibekwe is the journalist who published the audio recording of T.B Joshua offering N50k to journalist to give his church favorable coverage (read here). He took to his blog today to explain why he did it. Find it below
The last 72 hours were probably the most intense in my life. The love, kind words and support I've received in that period from, mostly, total strangers have been overwhelming. I want to thank everybody who saw the good in what I did. Though, to be honest, I think it was a little stupid. What was I thinking putting my life and probably my career on the line in an attempt to change something so entrenched it seems unchangeable?  But really I'm not fazed by the trash talk from those allergic to the truth.
It's a long time coming and someone has to put the Big Ben on the fat cat, I guess.
During the same period I've also been insulted like never before. I've been called the most uncomplimentary names and all the curses in Deuteronomy hurled towards me. They should be ashamed that the brushed ego of their spiritual Godfather meant more to them than the over 90 lives that perished under the rubble.

I can deal with the trash talk and name-calling. But I'm also not naïve. I've made plans to evacuate my family to safety at the shortest notice in case things escalate. I hope they don't. But one can never be so sure with these fundamentalists.

They said I'm an attention freak; that I published the audio clip because I yearned to be a social media celebrity (whatever that means). Well, I won't lie; I enjoyed the 15 minutes of fame. I loved the thrill of being in the eye of the storm. In case my accusers are reading this, I got over 2,000 followers on twitter within the period. I don't know what to make of that yet. I'm not so sure about this Twitter thing but if there's a way I can convert that to money, that would be something. Gbenga Olorunpomi, how much does one twitter follower exchange for a dollar these days?
So why did I publish the audio?

I had recorded the audio six days before posting it on Twitter. To be sincere, I didn't think much of it until Saturday morning (I'd explain later). I was intently watching the way the collapsed building was being played out in the media after the rather disappointing way Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, dodged reporters through a back door after his private meeting with TB Joshua on September 14. I observed that Nigerian media were being too gentle on TB Joshua despite the glaring irregularities surrounding the collapse. I read more reports about the "hovering craft" and how Boko Haram could've sabotaged the building and other poppycock the televangelist wanted the world to believe.

Very little was reported about the structural defects of the building. Not much was written about the fact that the building originally had 2 floors and was being illegally refurbished with 4 additional floors when it collapsed. We didn't come hard on the Synagogue Church goons who attacked first responders. We didn't highlight the fact that many of those that perished could have been saved if NEMA officials weren't barred from the site for almost three days! We didn't make an issue of the fact that our colleagues who had gone to report the collapsed building were molested on Saturday.
So when I woke up last Saturday morning and saw the picture of Jonathan shaking hands with a grinning TB Joshua with headlines like "Jonathan consoles TB Joshua," I said damn it! I couldn't stomach this blatant impunity.

TB Joshua is perhaps the most powerful preacher in Africa and politicians all over the continent fawn at him. But as watchdogs, journalists must hold entrenched powers to account. If Nigerian politicians didn't realise that more than 90 lives had just perished underneath a building without requisite permit and that those responsible should be held accountable, then the responsibility falls on journalists to force them to do the right thing.

Journalists shouldn't be seen or heard telling the prime suspect they would write "just like you said" after he offered to buy their consciences with N50,000.

Some of the reporters who collected the N50,000 have called me after the audio went viral to complain. They told me they have been getting calls from colleagues and family members who recognised their voices in the recording. One even accused me of a breach of trust. I told him I didn't sign a pact of silence with anybody. For me the decision was between covering the ethical shortcomings of my colleagues or doing that which is right to make sure those who died and their families get justice. The decision was easy.

Why didn't I publish the audio the same day I recorded it? Nigerian journalists habitually ask for gratification at press conferences and corporate events that it has unfortunately become a norm. Reporters actually think you're a fool if you turned down what they call "brown envelope". There are several excuses to justify it: "We're poorly paid," "We have not been paid for months," etc. Honestly, it's hard to dismiss some of these excuses sometimes. Nigerian Journalists are perhaps among the worst paid in the world. This is where the Nigerian Union of Journalist should do more. Its officials should stop paying courtesy calls to politicians (of course, we know what exchanges hands during these visits) and do more to force Jet-flying owners of media organisations to pay reporters more and on time. We deserve it.

Journalists should also explore other related and legitimate means of making money like researching, writing and editing reports for NGOs, writing and editing of brochures and reports, working as fixers to foreign journalists, blogging (I recently met a Nigerian television reporter that make quite some money monthly from his blog), etc.

Like everything in Nigeria, this "brown envelope" thing has been stretched beyond the limit of ridiculousness. I'd give some examples: On August 15, 2010 a truck belonging to Dangote Sugar Refinery caused an inferno at the Ojodu Bridge outside Otedola Estate in Lagos. More that 50 lives perished in the fire. An inquest was initiated by a non-governmental organisation, Access to Justice and Human Rights lawyer, Femi Falana. Please take a deep breath before reading the next sentence. During the inquest, officials of Dangote Industries distributed cartons of Spaghetti (and some money, probably to buy ingredients) to court reporters at the Ikeja High Court to probably skew their account of the hearing. In case you missed it let me repeat. Some Nigerian Journalists collected packs of Spaghetti as bribes! Are we that hungry? Some reporters got as little as 12 packs of spaghetti. My friend, Ben Ezeamalu, was almost beaten up for speaking against it.

In fact, they erected a wall of hostility around themselves whenever he came around. According to him, a very senior journalist pulled him aside and told him it was easy for him to turn down the brown envelope because he wasn't married and had no school fees to pay.
Ben said his curiosity was aroused while he was researching for material on the internet for an article he was writing days before the coroner's verdict on the inquest. To his surprise, there was very little material for an inquest that involved Africa's richest man and had lasted 19 months! After the coroner delivered his verdict, in which he indicted Dangote's company as well as the Nigeria Police, the (short) article was tucked away in a remote corner in almost all the newspapers the next day. The fact that the coroner indicted Dangote was also carefully left out in the articles.

Other journalists have tagged Ben "a spy" for consistently refusing to collect "brown envelopes".
Nigerian journalists no longer know where to draw the line. A father that lost his son during last Dana plane crash was forced to pay journalists during his son's wake-keep before it was reported. There are more puke-inducing instances but I'd stop here.

For those of you saying N50,000 ($300) was too little to entice Nigerian reporters, I've seen reporters scuffle over N2,000 ($12) during a press conference.

During last year's gubernatorial election in Ondo State, reporters literally came to blows at Governor Mimiko's home after the latter released "appreciation money" for journalists who covered his polling unit. The sharing formula was N10,000 per head, until the cash ran low and the formula switched to N7,000. Cue bedlam. The governor's PA, looking on with contempt, threatened to evict them from his employer's residence if they failed to conduct themselves with decorum. One fellow even started arranging for another group of journalists to go meet the governor for another "appreciation money."
Editors should also monitor their reporters too, but we all know that some editors get theirs through subtler manner (Bank transfers).  I'm a Nigerian journalist I want to change things the only way I know how to – going public with it. I'm not saying anything new here, everybody who has one thing or the other to do with journalists knows that these things happen. Maybe I'm the first journalist to go public with it in such a manner.

Corporate organisations and individuals should also stop offering these bribes (I still insist that they are bribes and nothing else). Journalist will report your events whether they like it or not. They want to stay in business. My heart skips anytime I get a call from my editor or receive that email with a subject that reads: "Pending stories". I know I'm required to deliver. I don't need that "brown envelope" to turn around that copy. I know in the Punch for instance, reporters are required to fill a certain number of pages every week. They can't sit around waiting for "money to fuel your cars" to write stories to fill those pages. The threat of losing one of the most lucrative jobs in the industry is enough "inducement". But the truth is most pressers aren't news worthy so PR officials feel they need to induce reporters to write about them.

And for the fundamentalist followers of TB Joshua, this isn't about your spiritual Godfather. I would still have gone public with this if the Pope was involved. I can't say I'm sorry that his ego was bruised. He clearly meant for the money to influence the reporting of the event. "So what are you going to write?" He had asked. That makes it a bribe. Simple. I can't help you if you couldn't decipher that. I'm a reporter not a brain surgeon.

This is the last I'm going to say on this issue unless something drastic happens. Let the personal attacks continue.

US soldier beats his 2 year old daughter to death

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 06:29 AM PDT

20 year old Texas soldier, Dartarious Graham, (pictured centre) has been charged with capital murder after his 2 year old daughter Peyton was found unresponsive with 'suspicious' injuries in his home in Fort Bliss, Texas. According to police, the young father beat his 2-year-old daughter to death after he became upset that she had soiled her diaper.

They also arrested Graham's cousin Robert Franklin, 19 (pictured left), for witnessing the attack and not doing anything to help the little girl. The child's mother Elizabeth Graham, 23 (pictured right) was charged with injury to a child by omission for no protecting the child and failing to report the abuse which had been constant before the fatal beating...

According to reports, Graham, who is a US army specialist, became very angry after his daughter soiled her diaper. He then took her to his room where he beat her for several minutes with a belt.

According to police, his cousin Franklin saw him take the child to his room, looked through the door and saw Graham beating the little girl but did nothing to stop him. He reportedly walked back to the sitting room to watch TV.

Franklin later told police that Graham continued to attack the girl until she became limp. They called 911 in panic and Peyton was transported to El Paso Children's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead an hour later.

The police learned the father had a history of beating the child and nobody ever did anything to protect her. All three are being held in El Paso County jail. Dartarious Graham could face the death penalty or life without parole if convicted.

Retired Police boss kills self, wife and son in Ogun state

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 05:22 AM PDT

A retired Assistant Commissioner of Police, Sunday Isokpehi, who at one time served at the Lagos state police command anti-robbery squad, on Saturday September 20th, killed himself, his wife Gladys and their son at their Sango Ota, Ogun state residence after a heated argument with his wife.

According to reports, the former police boss and his wife began fighting when they returned home from a wedding on Saturday after he accused her of disgracing him at the wedding by getting drunk.

The woman reportedly denied being drunk and before anyone could stop the couple, they started fighting. Seeing that his wife was overpowering him, the retired police boss went for his pump action riffle and shot his wife and then shot their son who had been trying to separate them. Seeing the gravity of the crime he'd committed, Isokpehi reportedly turned the gun on himself.

After the unfortunate incident, neighbours told police that the couple fought regularly.

Confirming the sad incident, the Ogun state Police spokesman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the bodies of the all three have been deposited at the hospital for autopsy. He said the police will carry out a detailed investigation.

Meet the man who has 100 orgasms a day, says it's ruining his life

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 04:29 AM PDT

37 year old Dale Decker (pictured above with his wife) says his life is being ruined by having 100 orgasms a day. Speaking for the first time about his near-constant erection which he says he doesn't enjoy and says has cost him friends and destroyed his family, Dave says he hardly goes out because of the embarrassment he feels when the orgasms start coming in public places...

According to the UK Mirror, Dave's condition is called Persistent Genital Arousal Syndrome which he developed in September 2012 when he slipped a disk in his back while getting out of a chair.
"Imagine being on your knees at your father's funeral beside his casket - saying goodbye to him and then you have nine orgasms right there, while your whole family is standing behind you. It makes you never want to have another orgasm for as long as you live. There's nothing pleasurable about it because even though it might feel physically good - you're completely disgusted by what's going on." Dave said...
"If you're in public, if you're in front of kids - it's disgusting and it can break you real fast. It happened to me at the grocery store and when it was over there were around 150 people looking straight at me - why would I leave the house when something like this can happen."
Dale lives in Two Rivers, Wisconsin with his wife April and two sons Christian, 12, and Tayten, 11.
While she does everything she can to support him, April, 33, is finding Dale's condition just as hard to live with as he is. She said:
"We really struggle right now as he is unable to work and supply for his family and I feel like all the strain is on me. It's really upsetting, we don't do things that man and wife should do and we argue over things that should not be affecting us. Because he sometimes has episodes at night we took the decision to sleep in separate beds. That can be very frustrating. You want the comfort from another person, particularly your husband but we don't have that. I really miss the old Dale, we used to have a lot of fun and one day I pray that he will come back to me. Maybe the doctors will find a cure for this - I don't know - I just really hope that they do."
Despite suffering from a near constant erection Dale and April rarely have sex. Dale said;
"Occasionally we will but it's very frustrating for both of us as this condition has left me unable to finish. I've tried reading about it, tried going to doctors but nobody can help me - I don't know what I'm going to do. I just want to get my old life back - I just want to get back what this condition has taken from me."
The orgasms start as Dave is doing an interview at a public park

Despite many medical professionals being unable to even diagnose the condition, there are some specialists in the field. Dr Dena Harris is a gynecologist who has mainly worked with women who suffer with PGAS. Speaking from her office in New York, she said:
"It's clear Dale is really suffering and I'm sure there are some people who will say that this is just in his head. But it's not - it's a serious medical condition and I just hope he gets the help he so desperately needs. Being aroused can be a wonderful thing but this is not like arousal, it's not even sexual. It's a horrendous spasm and it can be terribly painful. Dale looks like he is in pain - not just emotionally but physically as well. I've got to be honest, there is help available but if Dale doesn't get help soon then there could be huge risks in the future. Suicide is always a concern when people suffer from this condition - they feel like they have no other way to escape it."

Singer Lara George speaks on challenges of marriage and the time she was fed up

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 03:53 AM PDT

Speaking to Encomium magazine on the challenges of marriage, singer Lara George recalled a period in her 10 year old marriage where she was fed up and had to turn to her pastor for guidance...
"There were many times like that. We have had our fair share. I remember a time we weren't talking to each other. It got really serious I had to call my pastor that I was fed up of my marriage. I can remember that my pastor was not around then but he spoke to my husband that Jesus loves the church unconditionally and things were sorted out. I am glad my husband allowed someone he sees as a mentor to step into the situation" she said

On the challenges she's faced in the last 10 years of being married to her husband, Gbenga George, Lara said understanding each other has been a major challenge for her
"Understanding one another has been a challenge for me. When you are going out as boyfriend and girlfriend, you will think you have known everything about the person until you get married to the person. It is not as if I don't understand him, but there are different types of communication and understanding. When communication is complete, it means we have completed the journey. So the journey is still on, we are learning to understand each other daily" she said
