Remembering The Chibok Girls - By Femi Fani Kayode

Posted: 13 Oct 2014 01:14 PM PDT

Article written by former Femi Fani-Kayode
In the early hours of the morning of April 14th 2014 276 girls were abducted from their school as they slept. They all came from a predominantly Christian town in northern Nigeria called Chibok.
They were all between the ages of 15 and 18. They were eager to get a good education and to make something of their lives. 90 per cent of them were Christians who believed passionately that their God would always protect them and make a way for them in the predominantly Muslim Borno state where they resided in north-eastern Nigeria.

They left home on the morning of April 13th confidently, eagerly and happily and went to school to do an exam. The Federal Government of Nigeria, headed by a Christian President by the name of Mr. Goodluck Jonathan, had earlier reminded the local authorities that the school had been closed for a considerable period of time for security reasons and warned that it should not be re-opened for the exams to take place at Chibok because of the activities of the deadly islamist terrorist sect known as Boko Haram in that area. However the Muslim Governor of Borno state, Mr. Kashim Shettima, ignored these warnings and assured the Federal Government that he would provide the necessary security. He also assured the parents of the safety of the young girls.

He said that he would open the school specifically for the purpose of the exams and he encouraged the girls to not only come and do those exams but also to spend one night at the school after finishing them. Convinced by his assurances and moved by his conviction and confidence, the parents of the girls allowed their wards to proceed to the school for the exam and they encouraged them to spend the night there. The curious twist to the tale is the fact that a few of the girls that went to take that exam were the children of those that taught at the school yet after the exams were concluded not one of them stayed in the school or opted to spend the night.

It was almost as if they had a premonition of what was going to happen or, perhaps, someone on the inside had warned them about the horrors that lay ahead. The Governor of the state did not honor his word to provide security at the school. As a matter of fact as the girls prepared to sleep that night not one adult was in the school premises to watch over them apart from an old man who was the school gatekeeper and who slept at the gate. No teacher, supervisor or school official stayed with them that night and neither did the school matron, headmaster or principal.

Not one person in authority was with them let alone an armed man or woman to protect them from the obvious dangers. They were on their own. Worse still there was no electricity that night and no lights were on because there was no power flowing from the national grid and neither was the school generator working. The girls were not only on their own but they were also in total and complete darkness. They said their prayers, sang a few hymns, asked for God's protection and went to bed. Then, at approximately 3.00 a.m. in the morning, Boko Haram stormed the premises. The girls were subjected to the most unspeakable forms of abuse: they were raped, brutalised, traumatised and finally they were abducted.

The terrorists not only took the girls but they also ransacked the school, stole all the food in the premises, burnt a number of school buildings and made away with whatever they could lay their hands on. They bundled the 276 young girls into their lorries and sped in the dead of the night into the deadly clutches and dark groves of their hideout- the notorious Sambisa Forest.  A few days later the leader of Boko Haram, Mr. Ibrahim Shekau, released a video of himself telling the world about his intention to convert the girls to Islam, sell them into slavery ''in markets'' and marry them off in foreign lands.

He said that Islam permitted him to do so. He also said that he would never release them. He claimed that they had become slaves of Boko Haram and that they would remain slaves forever. Two weeks later a video was released of some girls covered in Muslim shawls and garb reciting the Koran. It was clear that Mr. Shekau had kept his word. These girls had been forcefully converted to Islam and they were now slaves.

Thankfully 55 of them managed to escape whilst they were being abducted from the school on their way to Sambisa forest. They did so by jumping off the moving lorries that their captors had herded them into. Two more escaped a few days after arriving in Sambisa forest. They have since recounted some of the horrors that they were subjected to and that they faced whilst in captivity.

This includes multiple rapes on a daily basis from several men, group sex, beatings, killings, torture, enslavement, maimings and forced renunciations of their christian faith and conversion to Islam. Clearly the 219 girls that are still in captivity are literally in hell. Stories are told of how some of them have been sold off ''in marriage'' to wealthy Arabs in north Africa and the Middle East and how others have become sex slaves in bordering African nations like Chad, the Sudan and Niger Republic. Up till today the Nigerian Federal Government has no idea where they actually are and have not been able to rescue any of them.

A world-wide ''Bring Back Our Girls'' campaign has been launched and this has created more awareness about their horrendous plight and kept hope alive for their safe return. However when a former President of Nigeria, Mr. Olusegun Obasanjo, said that the world would soon have to come to terms with the fact that ''we may never see those girls again'' and that ''by now some of them will be dead whilst others will be pregnant'' it did not give much cause for hope or cheer. Perhaps the utter despair that Mr. Obasanjo's words reflected added to the anxiety, trauma and heartache that resulted in the sudden deaths of no less than 7 of the parents of the abducted girls.

The truth is that the girls are not just the victims of the most vicious Islamist terrorist organisation on the African continent today, an organisation whose sheer cruelty and barbarity is at par with that of ISIL, but they are also the victims of an uncaring and insensitive ruling political elite in Nigeria who would prefer that the whole matter is just swept under the carpet and forgotten simply because they do not have the capability, the guts or the political will to take on Boko Haram in any meaningful way and rescue the girls.

The reality, as unpleasant as it may sound, is as follows. When the question is asked ''where are our girls?'', the answer is that they are somewhere in hell, hoping and praying that the Nigerian authorities and the international community never forgets them and manages to muster the resolve, know-how and courage to rescue them. We owe them that much: after all they are our children.

Yet all hope is not lost. On 25th September 2014 one of the girls was released by Boko Haram. Sadly she was not only pregnant but she had also lost her mind as a consequence of the trauma that she had suffered from her ordeal. The good news is that she is at least alive and safely back home with her family where she belongs. This gives us hope for the others. May God bring home our girls and may we never forget them.

The first week or so I had mad crazy cravings, eating everything but saw no weight gain and persisted. These urges have since resided and although I haven't seen a decrease in my usual appetite I have lost 3lbs in a month and ate absolutely lots of fast food. Just the other day I had two burgers for tea and have since lost another half a pound. I don't even take the tablets everyday.

They've started rejecting Nigerian students admission because of Ebola?

Posted: 13 Oct 2014 12:24 PM PDT

Despite being an Ebola-free country, some universities in the US are now rejecting Nigerian students admission. Twitter user @Idrisayobello shared one of those rejection letters on twitter and wrote, "Ironic that NavarroCollege only 31 miles away from Dallas with an active #Ebola case is denying admission to Nigerians who are ebola-free!". This is ridiculous!

Big Brother Hotshots Resa & Mira fall first...

Posted: 13 Oct 2014 11:36 AM PDT

Zambia's Resa and Mozambique's Mira became the first two housemates to be evicted from Big Brother Hotshots on Sunday 12 October, after the first week which saw the housemates going all-out to impress the continent with their Hotshottalents.

All the housemates, excluding Laveda, who won the title of Head of House after scoring highest with the studio audience during the talent show, were up for eviction this week. Africa voted, and with twelve housemates failing to win a country vote, the tie-breaker rule came into effect. The end result, independently verified by auditors SizweNtsalubaGobodo, was that Resa and Mira had drawn the least support from the continent, and were sent home.

It was a busy first week, with the housemates getting to know each other and delving into their first challenges. They won their first task advertising their Hotshots talents with posters, impressing Big Brother with their skills. Cliques formed, the first signs of mischief caused a stir and some housemates got quite close. Mira planted kisses on Luis and Nhlanhla during the very first party and Idris and Goitse hooked up just about immediately, though they're playing it cool.

The housemates also got to participate in their first Extravaganza Task. Head of House Laveda chose the two teams and immediately caused dissention when it appeared she'd pitted the 'artists' against the 'intellectuals'. As it turned out, team WakaWaka – the 'intellectuals ' - impressed viewers most with their performance and won immunity from nomination this week. Unluckily for group members Mira and Resa, that prize came too late, but it does give Sheillah, Nhlanhla, Luis, Macky2, Trezagah, Mr. 265, Sipe, Idris, Ellah, Butterphly and M'am Bea some room to breathe this week.

After checking out how the week had played out, IK called the housemates to order. After a trademark dramatic pause, IK revealed that Resa was the first housemate to be evicted from Big Brother Hotshots. After she said her goodbyes, she was philosophical when she joined IK on stage, declaring herself "at peace" and saying that she'd miss Sipe the most. The housemates weren't off the hook yet, though, as IK took viewers back into the house and informed the Hotshots that someone else would be leaving immediately. Mira's name was the next to be read out, sending the Mozambican home. After checking out her highlights on stage, she admitted that she'd gotten close to Luis during her brief stay, no surprise as she left the Namibian in tears after an embrace and kiss on her way out of the house.

Nigerian hip hop ambassadors Phyno and Olamide kicked off the show with their hit 'Ghost Mode' and returned again later on with a medley of their finest offerings.

With the housemates now offered a taste of reality after a week of settling in, things are going to get interesting during week two! Don't forget to tune in to Monday's Nomination Show (20:00 CAT on AfricaMagic Showcase &Maisha Magic and 21:30 CAT on AfricaMagic Family, AfricaMagic World on GOtv), - and then switch across to DStv Channel 198 straight afterwards to see what Big Brother has up his sleeve for the nominees.

Mum’s refusal to have her 5yr old daughter circumcised tears families apart

Posted: 13 Oct 2014 07:59 AM PDT

Two families, the royal family of Olaoye in Ushi-Ekiti and the Oyenekan family are at loggerheads over the circumcision of a 5-year-old girl, Sunnewsonline reports...
The once rosy relationship between both families has now turned sour following a disagreement over the circumcision of their 5-year-old daughter.
Miss Olufunke Oyenekan, mother of the 5yr old girl and fiancee to Emmanuel Olaoye, son of the Olaoyes, a royal family in Ushi-Ekiti, Ekiti State, had disagreed with the Olaoyes over their decision to perform the traditional circumcision rites on her daughter.

The woman, sensing that her husband's family wanted to perform the rites by all means, fled with her child from the Olaoye's family house in Ushi Ekiti in 2012 and her whereabouts has since remain unknown.

Recently, the Olaoye family again raised the alarm through a representative, identified as Chief Olu Olaoye over the sudden disappearance of Olufunke and her daughter. The family said that their son's fiancee did not mean well for the family by preventing them from performing the circumcision rites on the child. Their explanation is that it is a mandatory cultural practice to have all their children circumcised, moreso that theirs is a royal family whose duty it is to preserve the cultural heritage of the people of Ushi Ekiti in order to set an example for the people.

"She (Olufunke) is not helping us, neither is she helping our daughter she has taken away. There are certain cultural practices that we adhere to in our land, some are avoidable while others are not. This practice of circumcision is part of the unavoidable ones. Olufunke cannot prevent us from carrying out cultural and traditional rites on our own blood. It is a must that we do the circumcision rites for the girl. Moreso, that the child is a princess, a daughter from the royal family of Ushi Ekiti and possibly a future regent!.

"We have told them (Olufunke's family) that they must ensure that they produce her because she cannot prevent us from performing our traditional duties. She must bring our daughter for the circumcision rites, " he said, fuming with anger.

Meanwhile, Olufunke has vowed not to allow anyone, even if it is her husband, to carry out any circumcision rites on her daughter. A member of her family, who spoke to Sunday Sun on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the matter, said: "As for the Oyenekan family, we have no problem with whatever the Olaoye family wants to do with their daughter. In our part of the world, it is the man who owns the child and has the final say over him or her. But our daughter, Olufunke is more western-oriented than many of us. She has vowed not to allow any circumcision for her daughter. She says the practice might have an adverse effect on the girl in the future. We would have been able to intervene in the matter to ensure that peace reigns but right now, I can swear to you that we do not even know the whereabouts of Olufunke and her child. In fact, we learnt that her older son has also joined his mum where she was but we do not have any idea of where that is. There was a time she took refuge with their pastor in a church in Abeokuta. The pastor assisted in getting the human rights group to intervene for peaceful resolution of the matter, but the fiance' family became violent about the matter, they wanted to get their daughter by all means. We learnt that Olufunke narrowly escaped the attack on her and ran off with her daughter. We can only appeal to our in-laws to exercise patience on this issue till God makes Olufunke to come back, right now, there is nothing anyone can do.", the man said.

Speaking on phone to the Sunday Sun, Mr. Emmanuel Olaoye, fiancé to Olufunke, narrated how the trouble over the circumcision rites started, his words: "My fiancée, Olufunke Oyenekan and I met in February14,2006 and we love each other but haven't married legally. We were co-habitting and eventually had two kids. A boy and a girl.
"Things went on smoothly between us till I lost my father who was a traditional ruler in Ushi Ekiti, my home town. I received the message of the death of our royal father and was told I had been picked as his successor. So, I went home for the burial rites and took my wife-to-be and our children with me, actually to ensure that my extended family get to know her. We travelled to Ushi Ekiti in January 1,2012.
"However, we didn't know that a shocker was awaiting us at Ushi-Ekiti. My family demanded that we submit our children for circumcision rites.
Funke, my wife-to-be, didn't like this arrangement at all. She didn't particularly want our daughter, who was then two years and four months old to be circumcised as she said she didn't like what she experience as a woman who was circumcised by her parents when she was young.
"But my people won't be persuaded to spare our daughter of the treatment because our tradition forbids any of our blood not being administered the circumcision rites.

"My fiancée has since fled with our daughter since the disagreement in Ushi-Ekiti. As I'm going to succeed my late father as the traditional ruler of our town, it becomes more mandatory for my children to be circumcised. Here in our land, it is part of the prerequisites of a king-to-be to have all his children circumcised. We really do not have a choice here. But my fiancee sees the practice as barbaric and outdated. She won't have any of it for our daughter. " "That is why she ran away with our daughter. Our son has also joined her where she is. I want to believe her people arranged her escape and know her whereabouts but they are claiming ignorance of it. We once heard she was in a pastor's custody in one Bethel Love Church in Abeokuta, Ogun State. My people went there but she escaped from them and fled to an unknown place with the children and hasn't been seen since then. I'm just confused about the whole development, " Olaoye said, wearing a defeated, melancholy look.

Dear LIB readers: My wife changes her clothes in front of her twin brother

Posted: 13 Oct 2014 06:20 AM PDT

From a male LIB reader
My wife's twin brother is currently living with me and my wife but his stay is now causing us problems as my wife keeps changing her clothes in front of him. She's never completely naked in front of him but she has no reservations in taking her top off and talking to him in her bra. She says they're very close, that there is nothing she is hiding from her brother, forgetting she is a married woman. I have tried to make her understand my position but she says I am making a big deal out of nothing. Am I really making a big deal out of this or it this a big deal and something I should be worried about?

Kim K crowned world's best butt as 45% of women around the world now want 'The Kim'

Posted: 13 Oct 2014 06:15 AM PDT

Kim Kardashian's butt is what most women into body enhancement are now seeking. According to a research released over the weekend, Kim K has been World's Best butt and over 45% percent of women seeking to enlarge their butt in the last one year want what they now refer to as 'The Kim'.

Longevita plastic surgeon Prof. Dr. Fuat Yuksel, who commissioned the research, said:
'Kim has been popular among women seeking bottom augmentation or "Brazilian butt lifts" as they are more commonly known, for a few years, but in the last 12 months we've had a massive rise in the numbers asking for a Kim Kardashian bum. The procedure is performed through liposuctioned fatty tissue being injected into the buttocks. Kim has risen from just outside the top ten to the number one position in record time and is a firm favourite among women in the UK and elsewhere around the world."
"The Brazilian lift is now one of the most highly sought-after procedures we do - we've seen a 200 per cent increase in the number of UK enquiries for this procedure in the last 12 months alone. British women love beauties like Nicki Minaj and Kim Kardashian who have bigger bums and are not afraid to flaunt them.' Dr Yuksel said

Africa's richest man Aliko Dangote's company in Zambia, Dangote Industries Zambia is suing the country's Labour Minister, Fackson Shamenda, for defamation.

According to AFP, the company initiated the lawsuit after the mr Shamenda claimed that a senior company official of Dangote Industries tried to bribe him.
The company is now seeking unspecified damages for slander and libel as well as special damages in the sum of 112,042.84 kwacha ($17,728), according to documents filed in the High Court.

On September 15th, a local newspaper, Namibian Post, carried a story with the headline "Dangote offers Shamenda a bribe" where the labour minister claimed that a Nigerian human resources manager from the company offered him a bribe which he rejected.
"He told me that it was a tradition in their culture to give someone a token of appreciation. May I take this opportunity to warn Dangote and all other investors in the country to avoid enticing government officials with bribes -- it hinders progress." Shamenda was quoted as saying.
Dangote Industries is setting up a multimillion dollar cement plant in Ndola, about 360 km north of the capital Lusaka.
