Photo: EFCC arrest Kingpin of fraudsters in Ondo state

Posted: 17 Oct 2014 12:02 PM PDT

Find the EFCC press statement below...
A deadly syndicate of fraudsters who virtually opened an office for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Akure, the Ondo State capital, from where they dispatch fake invitation letters to unsuspecting heads of government agencies purporting to be carrying out investigation activities against them, has been uncovered.
The kingpin of the syndicate, one Olubunmo Olalekan, who is currently in EFCC custody in Abuja, was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Service, DSS, and handed over to the Commission.
At the point of arrest, Olalekan who parades himself as a Principal Detective Superintendent of the EFCC, had in his possession fake letter head papers of the Commission, 30 GSM sim cards, assorted complimentary cards, a laptop computer and printer from where he churns out the fraudulent invitation letters.

His modus operandi is to send out the bulk invitation letters to as many agencies as possible, via courier, claiming to have pending petitions alleging corruption against their heads.

Investigations so far revealed that the suspect has written and distributed over sixty letters purportedly from the Commission to several top officials of ministries, department and agencies. Among them are the chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, Ibadan; Managing Director, NPDC Limited, Sapele Road, Benin City; Professor Idowu Odeyemi, Provost Nigerian Institute of Mining and Geosciences, Jos; Managing Director/Chief Executive Office, Jebba Hydro Electric Plc, Jebba, Niger State; Medical Director, National Obstetric Fistula Centre, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State; Dr. Iyela Ajayi, Provost Federal College of Education, Okene, Kogi State and a host of others.

He would leave a GSM number in the letters asking the agency heads to contact a PDS Adeniyi. Those who fall for the scam are asked to pay money for the purported case against them to be dropped.
The syndicate had gone to the extent of issuing clearance letters to those that met their terms.
But some heads of agencies that are sure they had done nothing untoward to warrant investigation by the EFCC have been bold to contact the Commission, which was how Olalekan was nabbed.

Dr. Asunyikanmu Pius, director of Technical Aids Corps, Abuja was one of the agency heads targeted by the scammer. But once he received the invitation letter with instruction to contact a PDS Adeniyi, Dr. Pius alerted the Commission. He was encouraged to play along and consequently paid the sum of N2 million into an Access Bank Account as demanded by the suspect to throw the case. A sting operation was planned, but Olalekan was arrested by men of the DSS before he could draw the money.
Investigation so far revealed that the suspect who operates from his home in Shagari Extension, Akure, Ondo State has obtained millions of naira from victims who were willing to pay his price to escape the ordeal of a phantom investigation. Unknown to them, they had enriched a fraudster.

Olalekan is not the lone player in this scheme of trickery. His two accomplices, a certain Ahaji Yero and one Mr Bako are currently at large even as the EFCC launches a massive manhunt to bring them to justice.

Olalekan's arrest represents a major breakthrough in the effort of the EFCC to break the ring of fraudsters that specializes in impersonating officials of the agency to dupe unsuspecting members of the public.
The Commission has repeatedly warned members of the public to be wary of invitation letters purportedly emanating from the agency with instructions to contact any supposed official through a GSM line.

No authentic EFCC invitation letter will request anybody to contact an official by telephone. Rather, you are asked to report at an EFCC office to be interviewed by a designated officer.

Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicious invitation to the Commission's Department of Internal Affairs by email: DIA@EFCCNIGERIA.ORG or call this number: 09- 9044758 between 8am and 5pm weekdays only.

Lil Wayne disses all his baby mamas in new track

Posted: 17 Oct 2014 11:08 AM PDT

Guess it's the season for dissing ex-lovers. Days after Future and Wiz Khalifa dissed their exes in the song 'P***y Overrated', an ode to ex-girlfriends who mistakenly believe their 'p***y is the most important thing, Lil Wayne last night dropped a new track called Take Kare ft. Young Thug. And in the song, he gave an especially mean spirited shout-out to all his baby mamas. All four of them!

On the track Weezy spits,
They be hatin' on my girl, though/And they wish they was the b*tch they're hatin'/Salutations to my old hoes/And thank you for your participation/No chaser for my girl though/She go harder than me on occasion/Gettin' wasted with my girl/Then we 69 'til we need ventilation
/You don't know about it/Gotta open new accounts cause the others overcrowded/Gotta open up the stores when they're closed when we shopping'/For my girl, wear the clothes that ain't nobody rocking'/She so bad, I don't know what to do with her/I know just what to do in her/Homies hit me up, they said they're goin' out tonight/I said I'm with my girl, tonight I can't fuck with you n*ggas/I'ma take kare of her.

Gov Rotimi Amaechi insults Nollywood practitioners to their faces, says they are products of circumstances

Posted: 17 Oct 2014 07:14 AM PDT

This would have been funny if it wasn't pathetic. According to a few Nollywood practitioners who were present at the Best of Nollywood Awards, which held last night in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, the governor of the state Rotimi Amaechi practically insulted Nollywood practitioners to their faces.

According to a source who reached out to LIB, during his speech at the award after he gave veteran actress Liz Benson a Lifetime Achievement Award, Governor Rotimi said that people in Nollywood are products of circumstances/necessity. He said that the only reason they are in Nollywood is because they couldn't find other jobs, that if they had, they won't be actors. Rotimi said these actors studied sciences, law, medicine etc but because they couldn't find jobs, they embraced Nollywood.

Present when he said this were Nollywood veterans including Liz Benson, Kenneth Okonkwo, Shola Sobowale, Desmond Elliot, Moses Inwang, Dickson Iroegbu, Bob-manuel Udokwu, Patience Ozokwor, Elvis Chuks, AY, Iyabo Ojo, Emem Isong and many others.

Governor Rotimi also put two veteran actresses on blast. He told the crowd that he gives Joke Silva and Kate Henshaw bags of money whenever they come to Rivers state. And then claimed he was the one who encouraged Kate Henshaw to go into politics.

Like that wasn't enough, Governor Amaechi then said he went into politics for money.

Some of the Nollywood practitioners are angry about what the governor said and have asked the AGN to make sure it doesn't happen again.

This was made known at the Monde awards ceremony recently held inBrussels, Belgium.

The Monde selection is an international award that recognizes quality brands drawn from across the world fortaste and quality after critical evaluation by an independent jury.

Hefurther stated that Grand Malt is a premium malt drink poised to re-define nourishment and vitality. "We use the best quality ingredients and world class processes to ensure that consumers are consistently offered the highest quality product every time." He added.

Court upholds ban on use of Hijab in Lagos public schools

Posted: 17 Oct 2014 06:27 AM PDT

An Ikeja High Court today Friday October 17th upheld the ban on the wearing of Hijab (Muslim head scarf) in public primary and secondary schools in Lagos state.

Justice Modupe Onyeabor dismissed the suit instituted against the Lagos State Government by two 12-year-old girls under the aegis of the Muslim Students of Nigeria, Lagos State Area Unit.

The government had banned the use of Hijab on the argument that it was not part of the approved school uniform for pupils.

Following the ban, the students filed the suit on May 27, 2013, seeking redress and asked the court to declare the ban as a violation of their rights to freedom of thought, religion and education.
In her judgment, Onyeabor held that the prohibition of the wearing of Hijab over school uniforms within and outside the premises of public schools was not discriminatory.
According to her, the ban does not violate sections 38 and 42 of the 1999 Constitution as claimed by the plaintiffs.
The judge said Section 10 of the Constitution made Nigeria a secular state and that government must maintain neutrality at all times.
Onyeabor said the government therefore had a duty to preserve the secular nature of the institutions concerned as argued by the Lagos State Solicitor-General, Mr Lawal Pedro (SAN).
She noted that since the public schools were being funded by the government, it was therefore competent to issue dress codes and other guidelines to the students.
According to her, the use of uniforms engenders uniformity and encourages students to pursue their mutual academic aspirations without recourse to religious or any other affiliations.
The judge, however, observed that the uniformity sought by the government in the issuance of the dress code would be destroyed, should the prayers of the plaintiffs be granted.
"The non-Hijab wearing students will feel inferior to those who are putting on Hijab.
"The values of plurality and the respect for the rights of others who have subscribed to a non-faith based educational system cannot be breached.
"In that effect, the issue is resolved in favour of the respondents and the suit is accordingly dismissed,'' Onyeabor said.

Reacting to the judgment, the plaintiffs' counsel, Chief Gani Adetola-Kazeem, told NAN that his clients would file an appeal against the judgment.
"Well the court has spoken but there are still very many issues to be considered which invariably means that we will appeal the judgment.
"We are simply not satisfied with the court decision.
"The angle through which the court has looked at the issue is quite at variance with the provisions of the constitution. We will definitely appeal," he said.

No president or state governor should claim credit for containing Ebola in Nigeria - GEJ

Posted: 17 Oct 2014 06:22 AM PDT

President Jonathan says no President or governor of any state should claim credit for containing the deadly Ebola virus in Nigeria. He says the credit should be given to Nigerians who cooperated while the epidermic lasted. President Jonathan said this yesterday October 16th while receiving heads of a charity foundation at the state house in Abuja
"I am quiet pleased with what is happening because I believe that government alone cannot solve human problems and anything done by government when you involve the private sector and civil societies, it is always better.
There are success cases. The most recent is our ability to manage Ebola. The key thing that made Nigeria a success is the buying by the ordinary Nigerians.
When government said look we must be mindful of gatherings, we must be mindful of handshakes, we should not move corpse unnecessarily. I was afraid churches would resist because of our practice of holy communion... over 1000 people would share the same cup and so on. Churches stopped that practice within that period. Even the saluting by shaping people across, all that was suspended..even religious organizations within that period. Nigerians became mindful...even friends stopped embracing themselves saying until we get out of Ebola. So it had the buying of the populace of course that's why we succeeded so fast otherwise we couldn't have...there is no magic government could have used to solve that problem. No President or state government should claim any credit. The credit should go to the ordinary Nigerian for the cooperation and the buying" he said

Religion/Mumugiousity’ - by Charly Boy

Posted: 17 Oct 2014 04:49 AM PDT

Article written by Charly Boy...enjoy!
For starters, don't pick up the dictionary to lookup 'Mumugiousity', I coined it myself but you go soon grab weytin I wan yarn.

As I approach this topic I want to be careful so readers don't get the whole essence of this write up, twisted. E no dey hard some people. Religion is a touchy subject for a lot of people and in my household it is generally not considered "polite conversation."

For some, an attack on religion is an attack on their god or gods. I only wish to put down certain points or aspects of organized religion I'm not comfortable with, I am not questioning anyone's belief in a personal god.

In Nigeria, religion has helped us to remain sane or else we all for donkolowith the way our environment is stifling us. Religion can give people a sense of community and make people feel welcomed.  But life is never that simple sha. Kai! Oh lord.

In Nigeria especially, religion has turned a lot of my people into MUMU's.  Instead of learning to discern truth on their own and formulate their own mindset, they're told how to think. These are the people engaged in 'Mumugiousity'. For them Religion has turned them into group soul's, sheep, cows and goat with their Shepherd as their pastors, who have erased their trust in their own intellect and gradually convinced them to put their trust in them(pastors) as the only true men of god, convincing them that without them they would be lost. Hummmm! They fall for this like very poor people would fall for a bag of rice. Odikwarisky…

You have become 'mumurized' when you can forgo the little intelligence you have and on top of all that, you become a hypocrite. Religion is filling mumupeople with fear; it is one of the main reasons why mumu people are afraid of living. And when I say 'living' I don't mean just surviving. To survive is one thing, even stones do that, but to live is a completely different thing. To live means to be sensitive, it means to feel, to grow, to discover your potential and achieve to higher states of being each and every moment. These days nothing happens without it being remote controlled from the village, someone must have sent it, there are more demons waiting to destroy us, chineke God are you there?

Once you are a religious mumu you will not tolerate religious ideologies that are different from the one you follow. This is why you can see religious mumupeople fighting nonreligious ones.

To identify with a religious ideology, and call it the only truth and way, leads to tremendously negative consequences – hatred, tribalism and all kinds of violence. Just think of how many wars have been carried out throughout history by some mumu's in the name of God and religion.Abegi!
To live means to learn and life is a continuous lesson. When, however, you grow into 'mumuship', conditioned to believe what is right and wrong according to religion, and told that to doubt religion means to go to hell, naturally you become afraid of seeking true knowledge. You stop searching to find the truth, to learn, and hence to grow as a human being. You can't believe how many of us have stopped growing…Millions.

To blindly follow any ideology without asking questions simply means to restrict your perception, suppress yourself, and live in hypocrisy — in other words, to live in suffering and misery.

Many mumu people choose to follow, even though they suffer from this choice, simply because religion frees them from personal responsibility. To live spontaneously one has to take responsibility for oneself, and this is certainly painful. Life is made of choices, and to make the right choice is not always easy. So 'mumu' people prefer not to choose for themselves, but to have others choose for them. They prefer to walk on paths made by others, instead of creating their own path. But unless we stop having some of these wayopeople telling these mumupeople what to do or what not to do, some of us will never be free. And unless we are free, we will never be happy and peaceful.

Yes, you can have a personal relationship with God starting with giving love to your neighbour, just don't let some masquerades turn you and your life to 'Mumugiousity'. Fire burn dem.

Birthday meat: Two friends arrested for goat theft in Ondo state

Nigerian campuses to enjoy lowest data, call & SMS rates as MTN relaunches iPulse

Posted: 17 Oct 2014 04:00 AM PDT

With the increasing desire among youth, especially students in Nigeria tertiary institutions, to have access to faster and affordable connectivity, through voice and data services, MTN has repackaged its iPulse offering to match the popular yearnings among the population. This is seen as an improvement of the Pulse introduced a couple of years ago as it gives special priority to 'iPulse Zones', in other words, all campuses in Nigeria.

According to Bayo Adekanmbi, the Chief Marketing Officer of the telecommunications and ICT company, "through the iPulse, MTN has now made it easier for students in the tertiary institutions to access data and call services at the most affordable price ever on any network in the country".

"At 11kobo per second to any network in Nigeria, after the first minute, and N2 SMS rate in addition to free megabytes and access to social networking apps including Facebook, students will be able to derive maximum satisfaction from every recharge within the campus environment", he added.

Consequently, university campuses in all regions in the country will now be optimised on the network coverage to give students increased access to better connectivity which will support academic and social activities within the school environment.

The MTN iPulse offering was introduced three years ago to facilitate seamless connectivity among the youth community. It has now been repackaged to meet current trends, especially the demand for easy-on-the-pocket data connectivity to surf the internet and keep pace with global advancement in technology and maintain relevance on the social media. To make it easier for the students, the subscription code still remains the same. By dialing *406#, any student can access the most affordable call and data service ever on the campus

Entertainers are going into politics for money – Clarion Chukwurah

Posted: 17 Oct 2014 03:34 AM PDT

9ice, Desmond Elliot, Kate Henshaw, Kenneth Okonkwo are a few of Nigerian entertainers who have gone into politics and actress Clarion Chukwurah thinks its because of money. Speaking exclusively to Punch, Clarion said a lot of these entertainers want to go into politics because they are not making that much money from their vocations.
"The motive of those who are embracing partisan politics is purely monetary. Let us call a spade a spade. If you tell me that you want to go into politics to serve the people, I would want to look at your record first. I want to see what you have done to better the lives of the people in your immediate community. How many boreholes have you sunk in the community? How many hours of community service have you given for free over the last four or five years? How well are you known as somebody who yearns for improvement in social development?"
Clarion also criticized the leadership of the AGN. Ibinabo Fiberesima was re-elected AGN president yesterday
"I said earlier that I wanted to take charge of the AGN because I saw that those who were running the body lacked the experience necessary to turn it around and to change the face of the film industry. It was clear that those in charge had not real agenda for the guild and they didn't know what to do to turn it around.
"Also, I observed that some people already felt that being in charge was the same thing as being in a position to hobnob with top politicians in the corridors of power and to get money from various interest groups in the country. And there was so much desperation on the part of the leadership of the guild to hold on to power because they see their position as a platform to make money."

"I pity myself" Buhari says after picking N27m APC presidential form

Posted: 17 Oct 2014 03:15 AM PDT

Speaking at the National Secretariat of the APC yesterday October16th, General Muhammadu Buhari who is running for president for the fourth time, said he felt sorry for himself after buying the APC nomination form for N27.5million
"It's a pity I couldn't influence this amount to be put down ‎as in the case of ladies and the disable that intend to participate. I always look left and right in our meetings but I could not read sympathy, so I kept my trap. But I felt heavily sorry for myself because I don't want to go and ask somebody to pay for my nomination forms, because I always try to pay myself, at least for the nomination. N27 million is a big sum, thankfully I have personal relationship with the manager of my bank in Kaduna and I told him that very soon the forms are coming, so, whether I am on red, or green or even black please honour it otherwise I may lose the nomination."
"I was about to go to Kaduna this morning and I told the Chairman but he said in that case, you better pick your form and keep a straight face that means there is no excuse," Mr. Buhari said.
Responding to Buhari, the APC National Chairman, John Oyegun said the high price attached to the nomination form was "in order to separate the men from the boys".
