Photos: Burkina Faso Parliament set ablaze after members tried to elongate president's stay in office

Posted: 30 Oct 2014 12:23 PM PDT

Anti-government protesters in Burkina Faso today set their National parliament ablaze following a decision by members of parliament to review the country's constitution to allow President Blaise Compaore extend his 27-year rule. The parliament members were due to vote on a change on their constitution which would allow the sitting president, Blaise Compaore - who took power in a coup in 1987 - to stand for re-election again next year, when he was due to stand down.

The angry protesters who did not buy into the proposed constitution review stormed the National Assembly building in the capital Ouagadougou, ransacking offices and setting fire to cars, before attacking the national television headquarters. At least one person died in the mayhem.

One of the protesters said;
"We did this because Blaise was trying to stay too long. We are tired of him. We want a change. He must go!"
The violence forced the government to temporarily scrap a vote on the constitutional amendments. Relative calm has since returned to the capital city. See pics from the mayhem below...

Photos: Ikeja City Mall hosts 2face Idibia in autograph session

Posted: 30 Oct 2014 11:57 AM PDT

For the first time at the Ikeja City Mall, fondly called the ICM, an autograph session was held with none other than the living musical legend himself, 2Face Idibia, headlining the event. He was accompanied by his entourage including his protégé, Dammy Krane and a host of other recording artistes from his label Hypertek Digital.

He is currently embarking on a nationwide tour promoting his erstwhile LP, 'The Ascension', and the two forthcoming releases 'Face2Face 10.0' and 'Rewindselectuptodate'.

ICM was the preferred location to kickoff this tour for obvious reasons; strategically located in the heart of Ikeja with over 80 desirable shops to explore and huge foot traffic to match. Since opening in 2011, ICM has helped transform shopping in Lagos – making it one of the most popular destinations for the complete shopping experience.

Before 2Face took up the stage to start the autograph session, he was accompanied by Eniola Ositelu, the Marketing Manager of ICM alongside his entourage, for an introduction with store managers, had a pep chat with staff of stores that sold his Ascension CDs. They include Mr. Price, Bheerhugz Café, Bruno's Place, Silverbird Cinemas and Ruff n Tumble. He also took time out to grab a dessert at Melting Moments. He also took pictures with shoppers, store staff and store managers. After the autograph session, 2Face and his entourage hung out at Bheerhugz Café where he was catered to until he waved goodbye to all his fans.

The Autograph Lucky Dip

The aforementioned stores sold Ascension CDs and freebies for every purchase made. They include 2Face DVDs, CDs, dog tags. Shoppers that made purchases above N5,000 including the Ascension CDs, qualified for the lucky dip to win 15 Infinix Zero smart phones, Hennessy bag packs, Digifon speakers etc. Shoppers that bought only the CDs got it signed by 2Face and took selfies with him.

Temidayo took advantage of this opportunity to shop in ICM and got rewarded by meeting with 2Face.
"I have bought items worth N20,000 at Mr.Price with his CD and I can't wait to meet my idol," he said. His wish was granted. His CD was signed by the 'African Queen' crooner and was even given the opportunity to sing one of 2Face's songs as the iconic artiste watched on. He was also a winner of one of the Infinix Zero smart phones and other prizes as he was selected during the lucky dip too!

Vote Not Fight Campaign

As a peace ambassador, 2Face, knowing that ICM attracts members of the youths in their thousands, used the mall as a medium to promote the "Vote Not Fight" campaign. ICM management were glad to help in promoting a good cause. The rationale behind the campaign was to encourage the youth to shun violent acts during elections but abide by the principles of a free and fair election. Other celebrities came to ICM to lend 2Face a hand in sending a strong message to the public. They include Weird MC, Kwam 1, Kenny Ogungbe, Kenny Saint Best, ID Ogungbe and a host of other artistes and radio OAPs.

You can also be a lucky winner like Temidayo. Ensure you participate in ICM promotions and you might be the next Temidayo. Over 40 shoppers have been rewarded with cash prizes, gift items and prizes this year alone and there's more to come.

ICM remains your choice destination for leisure, entertainment and shopping. Bring family and friends along.
Follow us on http://twitter.com/ikejacitymall and http://facebook.com/ikejacitymall and more recently on instagram @ikeja_city_mall for all the pictures from the independence and the autograph session with TuBaba and any other update on everything about ICM including promotions.

You go girl! 'My boyfriend said I was too fat for sex so I dropped 30 stone - and him'

Posted: 30 Oct 2014 08:34 AM PDT

A cruel comment from her boyfriend during a romantic getaway made 22 year old Paige Way to drop from a whopping size 28 to a size 12. Paige said her boyfriend told her that belly was too fat for them to have sex. The comment from her boyfriend shamed her into shedding a lot of weight.
"It was absolutely mortifying when my boyfriend told me that my belly was getting in the way, but it gave me the push I needed to finally do something about my weight. I'd always been big as a child, and then I was 'the fat one' in my bunch of friends. Men would say horrible things about me on nights out, like "God, look at the size of her."

"I had no confidence whatsoever, but I tried to kid myself that I was happy being fat. Even when I broke a sun lounger at a family barbeque by sitting on it, I just laughed it off. However, when my boyfriend made that comment, I knew I couldn't kid myself any longer."
So for the next eight months, Paige worked on her weight, exercising and eating small portions of healthy food. By the time she'd lost all the weight, she dumped the man that felt she wasn't good enough. Now she says losing weight has completely changed her life and she's single again and looking for Mr Right
"Every time I think back to the night at the hotel, it makes me cringe. But it made me make a change. Now I'm happier than I've ever been - and I definitely haven't had any complaints about my belly since!"

Will it affect the company? Apple CEO Tim Cook comes out as gay

Posted: 30 Oct 2014 05:38 AM PDT

Apple Inc CEO, Tim Cook, 53, revealed today October 30th that he is gay. Tim, who became CEO when he succeeded Steve Jobs on August 24th 2011, has never discussed his sexual preference in public before today but said that many of his colleagues knew he was gay.

Tim, who is worth an estimated $500million, came out as gay in an editorial for Bloomberg Business Week, stating: "Let me be clear: I'm proud to be gay, and I consider being gay among the greatest gifts God has given me". See what he wrote after the cut...

Tim Cook writes for Business Week
Throughout my professional life, I've tried to maintain a basic level of privacy. I come from humble roots, and I don't seek to draw attention to myself. Apple is already one of the most closely watched companies in the world, and I like keeping the focus on our products and the incredible things our customers achieve with them.
At the same time, I believe deeply in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, who said: "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?' " I often challenge myself with that question, and I've come to realize that my desire for personal privacy has been holding me back from doing something more important. That's what has led me to today.
For years, I've been open with many people about my sexual orientation. Plenty of colleagues at Apple know I'm gay, and it doesn't seem to make a difference in the way they treat me. Of course, I've had the good fortune to work at a company that loves creativity and innovation and knows it can only flourish when you embrace people's differences. Not everyone is so lucky.
While I have never denied my sexuality, I haven't publicly acknowledged it either, until now. So let me be clear: I'm proud to be gay, and I consider being gay among the greatest gifts God has given me.
Being gay has given me a deeper understanding of what it means to be in the minority and provided a window into the challenges that people in other minority groups deal with every day. It's made me more empathetic, which has led to a richer life. It's been tough and uncomfortable at times, but it has given me the confidence to be myself, to follow my own path, and to rise above adversity and bigotry. It's also given me the skin of a rhinoceros, which comes in handy when you're the CEO of Apple.
The world has changed so much since I was a kid. America is moving toward marriage equality, and the public figures who have bravely come out have helped change perceptions and made our culture more tolerant. Still, there are laws on the books in a majority of states that allow employers to fire people based solely on their sexual orientation. There are many places where landlords can evict tenants for being gay, or where we can be barred from visiting sick partners and sharing in their legacies. Countless people, particularly kids, face fear and abuse every day because of their sexual orientation.
I don't consider myself an activist, but I realize how much I've benefited from the sacrifice of others. So if hearing that the CEO of Apple is gay can help someone struggling to come to terms with who he or she is, or bring comfort to anyone who feels alone, or inspire people to insist on their equality, then it's worth the trade-off with my own privacy.
I'll admit that this wasn't an easy choice. Privacy remains important to me, and I'd like to hold on to a small amount of it. I've made Apple my life's work, and I will continue to spend virtually all of my waking time focused on being the best CEO I can be. That's what our employees deserve—and our customers, developers, shareholders, and supplier partners deserve it, too. Part of social progress is understanding that a person is not defined only by one's sexuality, race, or gender. I'm an engineer, an uncle, a nature lover, a fitness nut, a son of the South, a sports fanatic, and many other things. I hope that people will respect my desire to focus on the things I'm best suited for and the work that brings me joy.
The company I am so fortunate to lead has long advocated for human rights and equality for all. We've taken a strong stand in support of a workplace equality bill before Congress, just as we stood for marriage equality in our home state of California. And we spoke up in Arizona when that state's legislature passed a discriminatory bill targeting the gay community. We'll continue to fight for our values, and I believe that any CEO of this incredible company, regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation, would do the same. And I will personally continue to advocate for equality for all people until my toes point up.
When I arrive in my office each morning, I'm greeted by framed photos of Dr. King and Robert F. Kennedy. I don't pretend that writing this puts me in their league. All it does is allow me to look at those pictures and know that I'm doing my part, however small, to help others. We pave the sunlit path toward justice together, brick by brick. This is my brick.
Tim Cook is the CEO of Apple

Police withdraws security men attached to Speaker, Tambuwal

Photo: Nigerian girl dies after failed Butt enlargement surgery in Thailand

Posted: 30 Oct 2014 05:09 AM PDT

24yr old British-Nigerian lady, Joy Williams (pictured above) has died after a failed £2,000 butt enlargement surgery in Bangkok, Thailand. The young lady's older brother, Anietie, who lives in Nigeria, said the family didn't even know she'd traveled to Thailand.
"We don't really know what went wrong, we only know what is in reports in the media." Anietie said
He also said that the family is making preparations to bring her body home. According to the Daily Mail, Joy, who relocated to the UK from Nigeria in 2007 and lives with her mother in Thamesmead, died on October 23rd after visiting a clinic called SP Clinic in Thailand which she had found on the internet. Continue...

From UK Daily Mail
Doctor Sompob Sansiri, 51, is lead away by police after Miss Williams died at his clinic
She initially visitied to the SP clinic, which she found on the internet, on October 14 to have the operation which she hoped would give her a bigger, fuller bottom.
A few days later her wounds became infected and she returned to have corrective surgery to remove the silicon implants.
But she was found dead on the operating table with a three inch-long stitched incision on her tail bone after medical staff found they were unable to resuscitate her.
Thai officials investigating her death believe her operation had been delayed to ensure Miss Williams had not eaten anything beforehand and that as a result the operation began after the clinic's legal closing time of 7pm.
It is believed Miss Williams had long struggled with her self-esteem and been bullied at school before choosing to undergo an operation on her nose to improve her looks.
Doctor Sompob Sansiri claimed to have trained in the U.S. and been practicing since 1998, but he is now facing ten years behind bars
While in Bangkok she had been staying at the £11-a-night Vabua Asotel hotel which is used by the clinic as accommodation for its patients.

The doctor who carried out the procedure, Sompob Sansiri, 51, was later arrested and accused of negligence after it was found that he had been carrying out night-time surgery without a licence.

He has now been charged with recklessness causing death and could face 10 years in jail if found guilty.
The clinic has been closed for 60 days while investigations are carried out. Thailand is a world-leader in cosmetic surgery tourism with many companies offering procedures at discounts of up to 60 per cent. The industry earned the country £2.68billion in 2013 alone.
One of Joy's friend who spoke with UK Telegraph said she had suffered bullying and low self esteem issues while they were in school and that she was never happy with herself.

"She was a really, really nice girl. She was very friendly and caring. She was always helping her mum with her brothers. She was a very bright girl and did well at school. She was a bit shy and quiet and I knew in later years there was something wrong and upsetting her. At school she had been bullied over her appearance and she went for surgery on her nose and face. Last time I saw her it was obvious she had had cosmetic surgery. She was fine before, she didn't need to. She was fine the way she was but she just wasn't happy. She had no self esteem and I guess she felt she needed to do it. She was just never happy with herself."
Police are now waiting for the postmortem result which would determine if the doctor will be charged for medical negligence.

Pics: Disabled people storm Lagos court this morning for Coroner's inquest on the synagogue building collapse

Posted: 30 Oct 2014 04:38 AM PDT

Many disabled individuals stormed the Ikeja High Court this morning October 30th for the Coroner's Inquest into the Synagogue church building collapse. The supporters carried signs that read "Don't push Joshua out of Nigeria by your actions in the matter", another read "Lagos State handle this matter with caution", and another read "People are not stupid, it was controlled demolition" etc

The judge in charge of the inquest, Magistrate Komolafe is trying to find out what was responsible for the building collapse.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning & Urban Development, Toyin Ayinde, who was at the inquest, said that the collapsed building was illegal, that the church didn't get any approval for the building. He also said that the main church currently has three additional illegal floors. See more photos from the event today after the cut...

Young ladies please read this. Girl goes missing after leaving club with man

Posted: 30 Oct 2014 04:01 AM PDT

Found this report on The Nation, and wanted to share it because a lot of young girls can learn from this. It's a story about a 300level English Language student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Annabel Nzubechukwu Edeh, who has not been seen since she left a night club with an unknown man many weeks ago in Awka, Anambra state.

Annabel had gone to the night club with friends on September 17th and as the group of girls prepared to leave, Annabel told her friends she was in need of money so would go home with a guy she'd met at the club and would return to school the following morning. It's been 6 weeks and Annabel hasn't been seen.

They were six girls, who went to Lounge 24 Gaga, a nightclub in Awka, the Anambra State capital, on September 17. They are Calista, Uju, Lovelyn, Ada, Chika and Annabel. All of them are friends and live close to one another. When they returned to their hostels the following morning, one of them – Annabel – could not be found.

Where is Annabel? This was the question classmates of Annabel Nzubechukwu Edeh could not answer. The 300-Level English Language and Literature student of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in Awka has not been seen anywhere, 43 days after she went to the night club with her friends.

Was she kidnapped? Is she dead? These are some of the questions being asked by her distraught family members and friends. She is the only girl in a family of three.

Annabel, 24, a native of Enugu State, was last seen on Wednesday, September 17 evening, when she left her Paradise City Hostel in Iyiagu Estate, Awka.

When she was leaving the club, Annabel reportedly left at midnight with a guy she met at the club. That was the last time she was seen.

Annabel's friend and hostel mate, who simply gave her name as Ifeoma, said after clubbing, the girls decided to find a place to sleep before returning to their hostels. But Annabel, she said, told her friends she wanted to go with Mmiri, a male acquaintance, she met at the club. She was said to have told her friends that she was in need of money, which could have informed her decision to go away with the guy.

When she did not return in the morning, it was learnt that Ada and Chika called Annabel's phone but were disappointed to hear a male voice claiming to have found the phone on the ground and asked the 'owner' to come for it.

Ada and Chika, it was gathered, retrieved the phone and contacted Annabel's elder brother, Ifeanyi, who reported the matter at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka.

CAMPUSLIFE learnt that Ada and Chika were detained for alleged complicity but were later released on bail.

When contacted on the phone, it was learnt that Mmiri claimed Annabel left his house at 3:30am when she refused to enter his room.

But, after the conversation, Mmiri reportedly switched off his phone and stopped going to a popular bar, where he drinks with his friends. He is nowhere to be found.

Our correspondent's efforts to speak with Annabel's friends she went to the nightclub with were futile. All of them declined to comment on the issue.

Annabel's roommate, Ukamaka, gave an account of what happened when she spoke to CAMPUSLIFE on telephone.

She said: "Annabel told me she was going to the club that evening. Her friends, Ada and Chika, waited in the compound till they were joined by their other friends. I had a premonition of the incident in a dream I had the previous night. I told her not to go to the club but she refused. When the other three girls arrived, they all left together. When she did not return in the morning, I called her line but nobody picked. Later, a man claimed he found it."

Asked to describe the kind of person Annabel is, Ukamaka said that her roommate is a good Christian and hardworking, saying Annabel is a good tailor. "I believe Annabel is a victim of circumstance," Ukamaka said.

Ifeanyi said his family remained devastated by the incident. "We are devastated at the moment. When I received the news, I travelled from Onitsha to Awka to report the matter at the police station. The matter is still being attended to at SCID and "B" Division. We have even gone spiritual to seek God's help to find my missing sister. Our Dad is late but mum is highly disorganised."

Ifeanyi said the matter had been reported to the UNIZIK management.

When CAMPUSLIFE visited Annabel's mother in Onitsha, she fought back tears as neighbours consoled her. She said: "I warned my daughter to stay clear of bad friends, but she would not listen. When she was admitted in a hospital a few months ago, my spirit never accepted the kind of girls who visited her. Now, they have done their worst. I can't see my daughter, now. Where is my only daughter? Annabel was seven months in my womb when my husband died."

Mrs Edeh said she had consulted a prophet, who confirmed to her that her daughter is alive but held captive somewhere. She claimed that the prophet informed her that it was Annabel's friends that facilitated her 'abduction' and threatened to sue them if her daughter did not return within days.
She added: "All I am asking is the safe return of my daughter. I have no other girl. If she was kidnapped, those holding her would have called us. I am confused. We are only praying to God and hoping that she returns home safe and alive. I am pleading with anyone, who knows her whereabouts, to give useful information that can help us to locate her."
