World Oral Health Day 2015: Super Dentists Rap Kids to Brush Day and Night

Posted: 27 Mar 2015 01:11 PM PDT

In its commitment to build a cavity free Nigeria, through its brush day and night campaign, which is a global best practice to maintaining healthy oral profile, Pepsodent has unveiled Super Dentists, four dental cartoon characters, to drive the culture of a healthy oral lifestyle among children.

Bunmi Adeniba, Category Manager, Oral Care, Unilever Nigeria said Pepsodent hopes to reach 10 million children in Nigeria by 2020 to inculcate the habit of brushing twice daily and act as change agents to influencing their parents to do same.

She said that not only does tooth decay cause children pain and discomfort, but Pepsodent believes that it also risks having an adverse effect on children's futures, causing them to miss school, potentially damaging their development at school and career prospects.

Among other school programmes planned to educate children, the Super Dentists cartoon characters will be used to drive conversation among kids to learn the importance of brushing day and night.
Unveiling the Super Dentists to the media include: the Honourable Minister of Health, Dr.KhaliruAlhassan; President of the Nigerian Dental Association, Dr.OlabodeIjarogbe; Representative of the Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr.ModeleOsunkiyesi; stakeholders from the health sector and over 1,500 school children amongst others who graced the World Oral Health Day 2015 celebration on Friday, March 20thwith the theme Smile For Life, organised by Pepsodent and NDAin Lagos.
Speaking at the event, organised by Pepsodent, in partnership with the Federal Government and the Nigerian Dental Association, in Lagos, the Honourable Minster of Health, Dr.KhaliruAlhassan said that the mouth is the gateway and mirror of the body adding that as such, Nigeria must take a paradigm shift from limiting dentistry to only the treatment of diseased teeth and care of the mouth.
He said that the Federal Ministry of Health is therefore pleased to collaborate with relevant stakeholders including Unilever Nigeria to integrate oral health into primary healthcare in Nigeria.
"I am particularly pleased with today's event which showcases the dividends of stakeholders' participation and has put Nigeria on the world map through the smile pledge taken by about 1500 kids to brush day and night aimed at a cavity free Nigeria," he said.

Mr Robert deVreede, Vice President Marketing, Unilever Nigeria said that Unilever feels the responsibility being the number one oral care manufacturer in Nigeria.

"We want to give something back to the Nigerian Public. We have set a global ambition to reach 100 million children by 2020 and 10 million of them is coming from Nigeria. In effect, the number we aiming to reach in Nigeria is the largest in Africa.
"We see the terrible picture if we don't care for our mouth. So it is a step in the right direction that 1,500 children gathered today to pledge to brush day and night. We know that children have the future and can act as change agents to make their parents brush day and night. By the end of 2015, we would have reached one million children in Nigeria.
"And it's our ambition to get 10 million people brushing day and night by 2020 in Nigeria. As one of the market leaders in oral health care products, our school programmes empower children and their parents with the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve good oral health for life, through education and behaviour change initiatives.
"The programme is tailored in such a way that children not only learn how to brush properly but also why it's so important – information which they can then share with the rest of their family," he said.
Dr.OlabodeIjarogbe, President, Nigerian Dental Association noted that the theme for this year 'smile for life' is aimed at wishing everybody a lifelong and healthy smile at all ages adding that the theme has a double meaning, 'lifelong smile' and 'celebrating life.'

Dr.Ijarogbesaid the WOHD is important because 90 per cent of the world's population will suffer from oral diseases in their lifetime, many of which can be avoided with increased governmental, health association and society and funding for prevention, detection and treatment programmes.

This photo was removed by instagram. The owner writes a powerful open letter in response

Posted: 27 Mar 2015 10:24 AM PDT

Indian student Rupi Kaur, a Sikh poet studying at the University of Waterloo, Canada, posted an image which is a part of her photo-series project for a visual rhetoric course on Instagram. It was subsequently taken down by Instagram citing violation of the 'Community Guidelines'. That's the pic above.

Looking at the photo, you will understand why it was taken down. The patch of menstrual blood on the sheets and the sweats were probably not to their taste. However, Rupi decided to re-post the photo and wrote a powerful open letter. Read that after the cut...

"Thank you @instagram for providing me with the exact response my work was created to critique. You deleted a photo of a woman who is fully covered and menstruating stating that it goes against community guidelines when your guidelines outline that it is nothing but acceptable. The girl is fully clothed. The photo is mine. It is not attacking a certain group. Nor is it spam. And because it does not break those guidelines I will re-post it.

I will not apologize for not feeding the ego and pride of a misogynist society that will have my body in an underwear but not be okay with a small leak when your pages are filled with countless photos/accounts where women (so many of whom are underage) are objectified, pornified, and treated less than human. Thank you. This image is a part of my photoseries project for my visual rhetoric course. you can view the full series at rupikaur.com

I bleed each month to help make humankind a possibility. My womb is home to the divine, a source of life for our species, whether i choose to create or not. But very few times is it seen that way. In older civilizations this blood was considered holy. In some it still is. But a majority of people, societies, and communities shun this natural process. Some are more comfortable with the pornification, the sexualization of women, the violence and degradation of women than this.

They cannot be bothered to express their disgust about all that but will be angered and bothered by this. We menstruate and they see it as dirty, attention seeking, sick, a burden. As if this process is less natural than breathing. as if it is not a bridge between this universe and the last. As if this process is not love, labour, life. Selfless and strikingly beautiful."

Instagram once again took down the photo

The poet then wrote on Tumblr :

"Dear tumblr family,
Instagram has chosen to once again, take down this image for violating community guidelines. Despite the fact that about 95% of comments were beautiful. And in support.

This just goes to show who is sitting behind the desk. And who's controlling the show, who's controlling the media and who's censoring us.

It's sad that this is still happening in this world. I know that some communities and cultures go out of their way to shun and oppress a woman on her period. I guess Instagram is another one of them.

Some women aren't allowed in their religious place of worship or out of their homes to do certain things. And are told they are sick. As if the period is a common cold.

I have been hospitalized many times because of issues associated with my period. I have been suffering from a sickness related to my period. And ever since I have been working so hard to love it. Embrace it. Celebrate it. Even thought it's given me so much pain in the past few years. and they want to tell me I should be quiet about this. That all of this we experience collectively does not need to be seen. Just felt secretly behind closed doors. That's why this is important. Because when I first got my period my mother was sad and worried. And they want to censor all that pain. Experience. Learning. No.

I am going to share the photo again once I figure out how to go about it. I would appreciate if you could @instagram and express your thoughts. Or even share the photo on whatever social media platform.

Their patriarchy is leaking. Their misogyny is leaking. We will not be censored."

Gov. Amaechi stage managed his gun attack - Rivers police say

Posted: 27 Mar 2015 09:31 AM PDT

The Rivers state Police command has released a statement regarding the alleged attack on Governor Rotimi Amaechi's convoy in Port Harcourt yesterday March 26. In the statement, the police said contrary to what was said by the Amaechi's Chief Press secretary, David Iyofor that political thugs loyal to the PDP attacked the governor's convoy, it was Governor Amaechi himself who orchestrated the gunshots fired at his convoy to gain public sympathy. Read the statement after the cut...

"The police wishes to react to the news that went viral on both normal and social media quoting David Iyofor, chief press secretary to Rivers state governor, to the effect that gunshots were fired at the convoy of his principal at Rumuolumeni, Obio/Akpor local government. To put the records straight, after a successful and peaceful rally under the close watch of policemen led by the divisional police officer of the area, shots were indiscriminately fired from the convoy of the governor for reasons best known to them, as against the wispy claim of David Iyofor. No shots were fired at the convoy of the governor. The false alarm, which is the usual penchant of the state government, may not be unconnected with the bogus claim of assassination attempt by his principal that is to just whip up public sympathy. The command urges politicians to refrain from whipping sentiments by toying with security issues to create needless public panic, where there is none, please." the statement read

The man pulled the second snake out of the body of the first one and laid them both on the ground next to each other. See the photos after the cut...

Want to have a better love life? Discover what it is with Durex. Press play!

Posted: 27 Mar 2015 08:25 AM PDT

After a week of global speculation, Durex has revealed the hugely anticipated smartphone technology that could change our sex lives forever. And it's the off button.

The world's leading sexual well being brand sparked mass speculation on March 3rd by teasing an imminent technological breakthrough in partnership with Siren Mobile to improve people's sex lives around the world.

Hundreds of thousands of people visited the 'Durexlabs' website to find out more, with excitement amplified by global media and social networks.

But in a moving and enlightening video released yesterday (http://youtu.be/wpdd2eBvyXM), couples who volunteered to test the technology, eager to give their love lives an uplift, were surprised to learn the answer lay in a simple switch that had been right in front of them all along – the offbutton.

The video, which has received 765,025views in its first 24 hours, follows some of these beta testers on their emotional journey, highlighting the serious issue that we are becoming enslaved to technology. It has been released alongside a study by Durham University commissioned by Durex, which reveals that pervasive use of technology in relationships is seriously impacting how often we have sex, even cutting intercourse short and causing tensions in relationships.

Researchers from Durham's Centre for Sex, Gender and Sexualities revealed that 40% of those interviewed have delayed sex because of technology, largely smart phones and tablets, with others reported hurrying sexual activity in order to respond to messages. Moreover, a third of the couples interviewed admitted to interrupting sex to answer their phone.  One participant said:"Sometimes I'll be on Facebook and he'll be on a sporting app while we are both in bed; we realise that we are literally sitting in bed together, but living in different worlds."

Ukonwa Ojo, Head of Global Brand Equity at Durex:  "With technology playing such a pivotal role in our personal lives and relationships, we set out to explore how it could be utilised in a positive way to enhance our sex lives, but in doing so we discovered the most effective answer was the simplest.  After consulting countless experts, academic research and endless qualitative interviews, the solution turned out to be a simple one – we should disconnect to reconnect.

"We are encouraged by the response to the campaign and film, particularly as we approach Earth Hour. We hope it will go some way to reconnect couples that have let technology compromise their connection with each other."

Susie Lee, the app entrepreneur and CEO of Siren Mobile, has been a central part of the project's implementation.  Lee said: "Of course, tech can never really replace human interaction. True chemistry comes from intimacy. "So whilst we need our tech – ithas enhanced our lives, enabling us to reconnect with old friends, reach wider social groups and meet new people – weneed to recognize the times and places when social networking doesn't enrich our experience. We really need to learn to focus on each other in the bedroom, rather than on our smartphones or tablets."

Dr. Mark McCormack, Co-Director of the Centre for Sex, Gender and Sexualities at Durham University, comments: "Technology has revolutionised our lives and smart phones are now central to the organisation of romantic relationships, from establishing them to maintaining love and affection when couples are apart."

"What this research reveals and the point the video makes is that technology now consumes our relationships at a much deeper level. It's made its way into the bedroom in more ways than we imagined, often with benefits, but also coming with potentially serious costs to relationships, as it can cause frustration and tension, and encroach on sexual activity."

KEY QUOTES AND STATS FROM THE QUALITIATIVE INTERVIEWS:

"When the first iphone was purchased by him I used to call it the third person in our marriage and I hated her with a passion, she used to sit between us, and I really disliked her… it has become a third arm for a lot of people"

"Sometimes I'll be on Facebook and he'll be on a sporting app while we are both in bed; we realise that we are literally sitting in bed together, but living in different worlds."

"I may want sex and he might not be aware of that, because he's distracted on his phone"

"In the last few months, I've tried to have a ban on her using her phone in the bedroom….. We're now trying to use the bedroom for just sleeping and sex."
"She loves her technology I'm not going to lie, she loves her phone. Sometimes it does feel like it's a relationship with her and her phone, she loves her phone and she's never really away from it"
" I've not delayed sex, I've faked an orgasm to speed it up to get back to work."

·         40% (12 of 30) have delayed sex because of technology (most phones, but a couple tablets/laptops)
·         A third (10 of 30) participants have answered their phone during sex

Photos: Woman beats teacher in front of her students for sleeping with her husband

Posted: 27 Mar 2015 07:23 AM PDT

A woman savagely beat a teacher in front of her students after claiming that the teacher was having an affair with her husband. But instead of the students and other members of staff to stop the fight, they stood aside, watched the fight, filmed it and uploaded the clip on Youtube. Dang!!

35 year old Laelia Paredes Flores, stormed into the classroom in Huimanguillo in south-east Mexico, and attacked 32 year old Marcella Villalpando Tovar. Tovar was kicked, punched in her face and stomach and jumped on. And her students didn't do anything to stop it. In fact, another woman can be heard off camera encouraging the beat down. Wow! See the video after the cut...

Student Miriam Gracia Adomo, 16, said:
"The woman charged in and began shouting and screaming before punching our teacher to the floor. That's when I ran to get help. But when other teachers came they just stood around watching. It was really terrible, terrible."
After the act was widely condemned, a school spokesperson released a statement saying;
"The woman claimed that our teacher was having an affair with the husband of one of the student's dads and the mother took exception. We are appalled that this attack happened in our school and that nothing was done to stop it, and we shall be carrying out a full investigation."

Niger Delta man, Pa Rewane supported Awolowo's education: appeal to Yorubas to support Pres. Jonathan

Posted: 27 Mar 2015 07:00 AM PDT

Sponsored post. Open letter by Udengs Eradiri.
My Yoruba Brothers,
Our attention is drawn to an irresponsible statement made by one Senator Anthony Adefuye that "any Yoruba person that votes for Goodluck Jonathan (an Ijaw man) is a bastard". We will like to remind the so called Anthony Adefuye that a Niger delta man, Late Pa Alfred Rewane supported the education of late Pa Awolowo in the 1940's. Where was he then?
Ijaw tribe reveres Awolowo whose role in the agitation against oppression by Nigeria's power establishment resonates deeply with the Ijaws and Niger Delta people at large.

A true Niger Delta man, Pa Alfred Rewane so believed in the late sage Chief Obafemi Awolowo as to give him all that is required for education, which was a legacy he largely bequeathed to the Yoruba people who are recognized for their shining intellect across the world.

It is only in good conscience that we appeal to Yoruba people to support their brother (the Ijaws), a tribe that has largely supported them in the past as we Ijaws and the Yoruba have peacefully coexisted for centuries in Riverine settlement that spans Yoruba speaking areas like Ondo, Ogun, Osun and Lagos.

We also wish to remind the Yoruba that despite the fact that a Yoruba man was President for Eight years with a Northern vice president, only an Ijaw man Goodluck Jonathan has so recognized the Awolowo family as it appointed the grandson of the sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo into a top position as the CEO of the NEPC, an important Federal Government Parastatal to Jonathan's transformation agenda.

We will always continue to be friends and partners of the Yoruba and other tribes as we fight for a just, equitable and prosperous Nigeria for all. We appeal to Yoruba people to support those who have supported them (with facts presented here).

Legend has it that Chief Obafemi Awolowo was first to predict that an Ijaw Man will be President of Nigeria some day.

We believe that if the late sage Chief Awolowo was around today he will most likely support Jonathan, as he will not watch democracy return to a man that truncated his democratic struggle and well known views which he upheld till death.

Again, Adefuye must apologize to the entire Yoruba Nation especially my esteemed friends and brothers who support Mr. President and will vote for him come March 28. They are not Bastards.

We pledge our friendship as we are assured that the Yorubas will reciprocate and vote en masse for President Goodluck Jonathan!

Comr. Udengs Eradiri is the President, Ijaw Youths Council Worldwide

Terrorists killed as troops recapture Gwoza, BH HQ + photos from the operation

Posted: 27 Mar 2015 06:48 AM PDT

Statement from the Defence Headquarters below and photos from the operation after the cut..
Sequel to the violent and heinous crimes perpetrated by terrorists in North Eastern Nigeria, the Armed Forces of Nigeria was tasked to halt the carnage and restore sanity in that region. This resulted in the deployment of land and air forces. The deployment denied the terrorists the freedom of action they had hitherto enjoyed and they resorted to diversionary tactics known with terrorist groups around the world by carrying out isolated attacks and bombings.
The series of deployment and operational effectiveness of the military were however challenged by the porosity of the borders, which gave the terrorists leverage to operate in Nigeria and retreat into safe havens in neighbouring countries of Niger, Chad and Cameroon. The recent reinvigoration of a partnership between Nigeria and these neighbouring countries under the auspices of Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) provided the desired response to the challenge, as these border areas that hitherto served as hideouts for the terrorists have been actively dominated by troops in the MNJTF. This development decimated the fighting capabilities of the terrorists, as the Nigerian military carries out a final onslaught on the nation's enemy within the country. These successful operations have culminated in the dislodgment of terrorists from towns and communities in Adamawa, Yobe and Borno states. Just this morning, the gallant troops of the Nigerian military in a concerted and well-coordinated land and air operations have liberated Gwoza, the headquarters of their so called caliphate which they renamed 'darul hikima'. This was preceded by successive sack of terrorists from towns and villages leading to Gwoza, the main objective. Several of the terrorists have died and many of them captured in the process. A lot of arms and ammunition have been recovered and the administrative Headquarters completely destroyed. A massive cordon and search has commenced to locate any of the fleeing terrorists or hostages in their custody. As at yesterday, the military has been able to take over virtually all the enclaves and hideouts where the terrorists were marauding. It is observed that some of the terrorists are currently fleeing towards border areas. The fleeing terrorists will expectedly run into subsequent encounter with contingents of partners in the Multinational Joint Task Force who have been mandated to contain them accordingly. The mop up operation in Gwoza and other liberated areas will continue in order to ensure that no vestiges of terrorists or terrorism remain in our country. The Nigerian military and security agencies therefore thank Nigerians and our partners in the sub-region who have consistently encouraged and supported us in the course of these operations. The military is more than ever before determined to once and for all stamp out every trace of terrorism and insecurity in our country. All citizens are urged to remain vigilant and report every movement or assemblage of suspicious characters to the security forces so that NEVER AGAIN shall the evil elements re-group to terrorize or cause mayhem in our country.
Thank you and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
