Meet the kids who never left their tiny NYC home for up to 23 years

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 12:57 PM PST

These 6 brothers and a sister never left their home for 23 years because of a paranoid father who believed that New York would contaminate them. The children had to learn everything they know from watching over 5,000 movies. Read the strange story below from UK Daily Mail
The strange tale of six brothers and one sister who grew up in New York but were never allowed out to explore the city's streets has become the subject of a new documentary.
The Angulo siblings - Bhagavan, 23, twins Govinda and Narayana, 22, Mukunda, 20, Krisna, 18, Jagadesh, 17, and their sister Visnu - lived with their parents on welfare in a four-bedroom apartment in Manhattan's Lower East Side. Their father, Oscar, kept the only key and the door was always locked.
Home-schooled by their mother, the siblings found an outlet watching movies which gave them a taste, albeit a warped one, of the outside world.

The lives of the Angulo family became the subject of film,The Wolfpack, from director Crystal Moselle.
The documentary won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah last month. The six brothers and their mother Susanne also attended the premiere. Their sister, Visnu, who is the eldest and suffers developmental challenges, did not attend.

The story emerged in 2010, when Ms Moselle met one of the brothers - then aged between 11 and 18 years old - on a rare escape into the outside world.
She described first seeing them, on First Avenue, when they were all walking in a 'pack', wearing sunglasses and with their long hair blowing. Their look had been inspired by Reservoir Dogs.

Ms Moselle said: 'It almost felt as if I had discovered a long lost tribe, except it was not from the edges of the world but from the streets of Manhattan.'
The filmmaker befriended the boys, slowly earned the family's trust and was invited into their sheltered world, bringing her camera with her.
Ms Moselle said that boy's mother, Susanne Angulo, slowly opened up to her but that the father, was a 'rollercoaster'.
Daily Mail Online was awaiting comment from the film's distributor, Magnolia Pictures.
According to the documentary's blurb, which runs to one hour and 24 minutes, it follows the siblings' isolated lives.
'All exceedingly bright, they have no acquaintances outside of their family and have practically never left home,' the film's press release reads.

They fed their imaginations by meticulously re-enacting favorite movies - works by Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Nolan and Martin Scorcese among them.
Their movie reconstructions were elaborate - at one point, two of the brothers recreated Batman: Dark Knight Rises' costumes out of no more than cereal boxes and yoga mats.

The brother says: 'After I saw the Dark Knight, that made me believe that something was possible to happen. Not because it was Batman, it's because it felt like another world.

'I did everything I could to make that world come true. To escape my world.'
In all they had watched about 5,000 movies which were rented or bought cheaply.

The parents above...

Finally, one of the brothers escapes the home, and the clan is forced to readjust and begin taking their first steps into society.
Ms. Moselle told The New York Times: 'It's fascinating what the human spirit does when it's confined.
'The downside to all the movies - and they have seen, like, 5,000 - is that there are certain formulas to them.

'Real life is different. In real life, the girl doesn't always break your heart. The boys are still struggling to understand that.'
The children come across as a likable and intelligent group in the film, despite their unimaginably sheltered lives.
Their mother, Susanne, appears to have been controlled to the same extent that her children were.

She is described as a former hippie from the Midwest who is both the provider and educator for the family. She met her husband on the trail to Machu Picchu.

Their father, Oscar, appears on briefly on camera. The Peruvian immigrant, who is devoted to Hare Krishna, appears caught in a struggle with paranoia and alcohol.
The once aspiring musician, with a deep love for AC/DC, instilled his love of music in his sons and daughter. He believes that New York will 'contaminate' his children.
However filmmaker Ms Moselle reserved judgement on Mr Angulo, telling The Times: 'The thing is, these brothers are some of the most gentle, insightful, curious people I've ever met. Something was clearly done right.'

According to The Times, social services did have involvement at the home and the children have received some psychiatric treatment.
In the film, all the siblings can be seen struggling with resentment towards their father for the life they have been forced to lead.

Six of the siblings still live in the family's Lower East Side apartment - only Govinda Angulo has let home.
From left to right) Jagadisa, Govinda, Narayana, producer Izabella Tzenkova, associate producer Megan Delaney, the siblings' mother Susanne Angulo, director Crystal Moselle, Bhagavan, Jagadisa, and Mukunda attend The Wolfpack premiere during the 2015 Sundance Film Festival at the Temple Theate in Park City, Utah

Oba of Benin is alive -Traditional council

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 12:27 PM PST

There were wide spread reports online today that the Oba of Benin, Oba Erediuwa had passed on at age 92. The Benin Council of Chiefs through its secretary Frank Irabor has however debunked the reports. According to Mr Irabor, the rumors have been in circulation now for over a year
"They have been peddling that rumour for more than a year now, because the Oba has not been coming out. If there is anything like that, there is usually a statement from the palace or from the Benin Traditional Council. The fact that he has not been coming out, even when the President came last week, does not mean that there is anything like that‎. I don't bother about rumours. I believe in getting information from the authentic source. For more than six months, they have been carrying the rumor" he told punch in a phone interview.
The absence of the Oba during the visits of President Jonathan and Gen Buhari during their campaign rallies in Edo state last week gave credence to the rumors of his death.

EFCC arrest son of former Adamawa state gov, N15b allegedly found in his company accounts

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 11:58 AM PST

Two weeks after he and his father, former Adamawa state governor, Murtala Nyako were declared wanted by the EFCC for financial impropriety while in government, the operatives of the EFCC this morning arrested Abdul-Aziz Nyako, the son of Gov Nyako in Gombe state. His arrest comes after N15 billion meant for the state was found in accounts of 5 companies owned by him.
Read the EFCC press statement on his arrest below after the cut...

Barely two weeks after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, declared former Adamawa State Governor, Murtala Nyako and his son, Abdul-Aziz, wanted, operatives of the anti- graft agency, this morning arrested the younger Nyako in Gombe, Gombe State. He was immediately flown to Abuja where he is currently being grilled by a crack team of detectives who had been working on the Adamawa investigation for several months.
Abdul-Aziz, who was declared wanted by the EFCC in the case of stealing, abuse of office and money laundering, is currently telling investigators all he knows about illicit funds traced to companies where he has interest.
Specifically, he will have to explain how over N15billion funds belonging to Adamawa State was laundered into the accounts of five companies owned by him-  Blue Opal Nigeria limited, Crust Energy Nigeria Limited, Blue Ribbon Multilinks Limited, Tower Assets Management Limited and Blue Ribbon Bureau De Change.
The funds was funned into the accounts of the companies from Adamawa State accounts domiciled in a new generation bank by the account officer who incidentally is the manager and an in-law to ex-governor Nyako.
The manager claimed he transferred the funds through verbal instruction from the former governor  for purposes which are not stated.
Investigations revealed that from 2007 to 2011 within Nyako's tenure in office, before he was impeached in 2014, he had directed that all of the state owned accounts domiciled in various banks be transferred to the new generation bank .
Abdul-Aziz's company, Blue Opal, is said to own, among other investments in Nigeria, an estate  in Abuja, while his father's account officer owns several properties and investments scattered around Abuja, Yola and Kano.
Former governor Nyako is still on the run.

Nicki Minaj & Meek Mill Touring Together As 'Hottest Rap Couple'

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 09:24 AM PST

Nicki Minaj and her new man Meek Mill are working on a co-headlining tour which starts tomorrow. TMZ reports below...
Nicki Minaj and Meek Mill have the sexiest plans possible for Valentine's Day -- they're hooking up to make some serious paper together ... and this weekend is just the start. Sources close to Meek and Nicki -- who are dating now -- tell TMZ the couple is joining forces as the "Hottest Rap Couple" for appearances in NYC Saturday night, and again in Charlotte later this month. There's also talk of putting together a world tour.
We're told the couple wanted to do it together so they could, y'know -- make twice as much cheese touring as a package deal. Also, it's easier to hook up this way.
Although they're co-headlining ... make no mistake, Nicki's the bigger draw -- and we're told she's getting paid almost double what Meek makes. Of course, he still gets fringe benefits

As seen on the fence of Bola Tinubu's Lagos home this morning

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 05:57 AM PST

Lol. These politicians sef! Looks like the APC is still insisting that FG is sending military men to patrol the Lagos home of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. This pic was sent to me - allegedly put their by Tinubu's supporters. Below is the accompanying message...
"This is the message we found on the fence of the APC National Leader, Bola Tinubu's house this morning. The two banners hung in the fence of the main house and the next building to his house. The message was loud and clear to the military who have been patrolling Tinubu's house and the stretch of Bourdillon Road since last Sunday. The message on the banners meant for the military- "This is not Sambisa Forest. Wrong Posting."Sambisa Forest is the forest  under the control of Boko Haram for years and is yet to be penetrated by the Nigerian military. It is suspected that APC stalwarts and Tinubu supporters must have put up the message over night.
Last night about 11pm, a lorry load of soldiers drove back and forth on Bourdillon Road and round the Falomo Roundabout for about an hour before finally driving off.

Why some Abuja men spend more time in beer palour, gardens

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 05:31 AM PST

This is a NAN report and it's quite interesting. Read below..
Some men in Abuja have given reasons why they prefer to stop over at drinking joints before going home. Few of them who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja noted that they did that to avoid unnecessary squabbles with their wives. They also said disturbances from their children contributed to making them stay late night at drinking joints.
Ferdinand Lucas, a welder, who usually visited a joint said that he stopped over at the garden to relax with a bottle of beer before going home to avoid argument with his wife.
"I recall when we newly got married, my wife use to be very humble and caring but now it is the opposite. My wife complains on every issue and sometimes I don't even know how to handle or manage her. In one of the occasions when I got home, she started complaining over the children school fees which I already promised to settle at the end of the month,'' he said.
Lucas said he wish he was still single to avoid the usual ranting of the wife, even when he came home late. Mr. Samuel Olaedo a business man at Wuse Market said he preferred to stop over at beer parlour to drink and watch football to ease off tension before going home.
"I recall an incident that happened some time ago, my wife asked me to buy a separate television for her to avoid her disturbance during football match. I told her I have no money for that now, since she comes back home before me she will start watching her soap operas; she will hide the remote control from me. When I return home and try to change the station from the decoder we will start arguing which will result to insults,'' he said.
Olaedo pointed out that he preferred going straight to his bed to sleep even when he returned home late just to avoid the wife's disturbance.

A male boutique operator, who spoke on the condition anonymity, said the desire to take care of his girlfriend keeps him out in a garden every day. According to him, the wife is incapable of making the home interesting for him.
"My girlfriend is a very interesting person and she makes me very happy; that is why I spend more time with her than with my wife. My wife doesn't make the home interesting, she is always busy chatting with her friends on phone and leaving me to myself but my girlfriend gives me attention and notices everything that bothers me,'' he said.
He further said that he could be married to the girlfriend if the wife does not change.

Gen. Murtala Mohammed - assasinated exactly today 39 years ago

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 05:25 AM PST

General Murtala Ramat Muhammed, born November 8, 1938, was assassinated in Lagos in February 13th 1976. He was just 38 years old and had only been head of State for less than seven months.

The late Head of State who was well loved, took power on July 30th 1975 in a bloodless coup against Gen. Yakubu Gowon's administration. Gowon was overthrown while at an OAU summit in Uganda.

Murtala Muhammed was killed along with his aide-de-camp, Lieutenant Akintunde Akinsehinwa, on February 13, in a failed coup attempt led by Lt. Col Buka Suka Dimka. Murtala's car was ambushed while on his way to his office at Dodan Barracks, Lagos. He was succeeded by the Chief of Staff, Supreme HQ, Olusegun Obasanjo. Dimka was later executed for Murtala's assassination.
