Dettol leads fresh hygiene benefit awareness to schools

Posted: 09 Feb 2015 12:16 PM PST

In furtherance of efforts to promote healthier lifestyle and reduce abstention of pupils from school owing to sicknesses, Dettol, the leading anti-germ health and hygiene brand from the stables of Reckitt Benckiser has commenced fresh rounds of visit to schools to educate pupils and teachers on the benefits of hand hygiene.

L-R: Assistant Brand Manager, Dettol, Tolulope Olaoye,  ; Nollywood Actress and Brand Ambassador, Dettol, Patience Ozokwor (Mama G); Special  Adviser to the Governor of Kwara State on Sport, Otunba Kayode Bankole; PTA Chairman, Chrisland School Opebi, Mr. Chiedu Ajoku with pupils of Chrisland School Opebi during the Dettol School Hygiene Programme at Chrisland Inter-house sport competition.

The school visits, a key component of the Dettol School Hygiene Programme (SHP) initiative, is targeted at driving home the key message of proper handwashing culture as the most cost-effective strategy to reduce potential death-causing illnesses such as diarrhea and other respiratory diseases often caused by germs and poor hygiene.

On Friday In Lagos, the SHP train berthed at Chrisland School, Ikeja during the school's inter-house sports competition with Dettol Brand Ambassador and veteran Nollywood actress, Patience Ozokwor popularly known as Mama G, leading the highly interactive campaign.
Through the deployment of audio-visual kits and memorable sing-along songs, the students fully participated in the do-it-yourself six steps of effective handwashing, and they commended Dettol for the initiative.

While encouraging the students, parents and teachers to imbibe the culture of regular handwashing in order to live healthy and be active, Ozokwor reminded them that germs posed serious danger to human health and they could cause illnesses such as diarrhea, flu, fever, cough and catarrh in addition to avoidable death.

She advised, "Nothing else compares to having good health. We are unhappy when we or our loved ones fall sick; we go through pains and unable to go about our regular activities. Germs are found everywhere; on the playground, in toilets and in trash can. It is therefore important that after we play with friends or use the toilet or trash rubbish, we must wash our hands properly with Dettol soap and clean water."

She affirmed Dettol's commitment to the continued empowerment of Nigerians through innovative solutions that could bring about healthier living.
Speaking on the significance of the Dettol School Hygiene Programme, the Marketing Director, West Africa, Reckitt Benckiser, Mr. Oguzhan Silivrili, enjoined Nigerians to embrace standard solutions such as regular handwashing as one of the cost-effective ways to protect themselves and loved ones against illness-causing germs.

"Solutions that do not protect from all 100 types of germs are substandard and we at Reckitt Benckiser advocate that people do not protect themselves with substandard solutions but with gold standard solution. Dettol is the only antibacterial brand which has been proven to protect from up to 100 illness causing germs which is why we advocate that Nigerians do not take a risk with the lives of their loved ones but rather, adopt the gold standard kind of protection they can get – Dettol," he said.

Silivrili added that the SHP was one of the numerous platforms put in place by Dettol to help Nigerians to live healthier life as well as empower them to remain active at all times. He said over 3 million children across Nigeria have been reached with the message of handwashing since the inception of the programme in 2009.

On his part, the Marketing Manager, West Africa, Reckitt Benckiser, Mr. Ahmed Shah, stated that "Dettol has been reaching Nigerians with different grassroots activities such as the School Hygiene SHP,  the New Mum Programmes (NMP) which has also reached approximately 5 million new mums in the hospitals since inception and Health On Wheels (HOW) which is a mobile clinic.
"Over the years of having these programmes, we do not sell products to targets, rather, we enlighten them, give them brochures to help them recall hygiene messages and we give them free products.   All of these programmes form the pillar of this Campaign and are conveying one singular message of upholding best hygiene practices."

Shah said further that, "For the School Hygiene Programme (SHP), we believe that the formative age is the best time to inculcate the habit of good hygiene practice in a person; this is the reason we have chosen to work closely with schools pan-Nigeria to empower the children with hygiene messages so as they grow older, it remains a part of them and they can pass it on to generations after them."

Commenting on the initiative, the Sectional Head, Gopherwood School, Lagos, Mr. Michael Dairo, commended Reckitt Benckiser for being innovative. "Dettol visits our school often and this has really enlightened the pupils on how to wash their hands.  Whenever they go to the toilet or after playing on the ground, you see them rush to the tap to wash their hands with Dettol soap. It's a part of them now," he said.

The Head Teacher, The Royal Masters School, Ikeja, Mrs. Olanrewaju Anugo, also affirmed the positive impact which the programme has had on the pupils, saying "Ever since Dettol started educating our pupils to embrace proper hygiene culture, there has been drastic reduction in the number of visit to the sickbay and pupil abstention from school on the ground of sickness. Dettol has gone a long way in ensuring that the pupils and the entire society are conscious of their health."

Bola Tinubu releases statement on 2015 elections postponement

Posted: 09 Feb 2015 07:35 AM PST

The APC Chieftain said the elections was postponed because GEJ feared he was going to lose. Find the statement below...
What happened Saturday was actually not a postponement due to security or logistical reasons. What happened was the by-product of overt political interference undermining the independence of the election management body, INEC. The elections were postponed not because they could safely be held. They were postponed because one man, President Jonathan, feared that an election held on February 14 would for him become an election lost. While the mouth was Jega, the words were Jonathan. He chose to place our democracy at risk than do what democracy demands by facing and risking the verdict of the people. That he would use our security agencies to provide his excuse only adds insult to injury.
This act was one desperation of a man in fear of defeat. It was not done for the national good. It was the wrong thing done for the wrong reason by the wrong man.
The rationale stated by the heavily intimidated INEC chairman does not withstand close scrutiny nor the rigors of logical thought. It is nothing but a lie draped in a falsehood born by deceit.
Jega said he hinged his decision on a purported letter stating that due to an impending offensive the security agencies will not have the personnel to spare to adequately guard the polling areas in the northeastern states.
For the Service Chiefs to be inserted in the electoral process in this manner and at the eleventh hour reveals nothing but a cynical plot to thwart elections. President Jonathan has revealed that he only wants elections where the guaranty is that he shall win. This is not the nature of democratic elections. Jonathan's government has purposefully undermined the electoral process because he is not interested in a free and fair honest where the outcome reflects the sovereign will of the people. He wants an elaborate coronation dressed in the garb of an election. The Nigerian people are too smart for this rude trick.
This postponement is a smokescreen because what the letter says is that they are advising a postponement of six weeks in the first instance subject to the amelioration of the security situation in the North East. This is coming from a Chief of Defence staff that vowed to crush the insurgents within four months early last year. A year later, nothing has changed. He is now asking Nigerians to believe this government can do in six weeks what it could not do in six years.
I ask Nigerians to question why these Service Chiefs decided to launch a major operation a week before the elections? What is new about the security situation in the last two weeks that has not been there these past several years? The date and importance of the election was well publicized. Why did they wait till now? They waited because they were given marching orders by the president to delay the elections.
They have gone on an offensive already. However, the true offensive is not against Boko Haram. It is against the Nigerian people and our democracy.
If elections could hold in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq, why not in Nigeria where only 14 out of 774 council areas are under siege?
This postponement may be the prelude to even rasher more authoritarian action by this desperate, inept government.
This postponement has deeply wounded Nigerian democracy. While my party hoped to go into the election and win it that we may offer a new and honest deal to the people. This government continues to feed the people a raw deal.
The ambition of one man should not be allowed to affect the destiny of 170 million Nigerians.Nigerians have signalled their desire for change and there is nothing this government can do to erase it.
Thus, we do not despair. I ask our supporters and Nigerians to remain calm and do everything to keep the peace. I ask you to renew your determination in the face of this insult to our democracy and common sense. It is inevitable that change shall come and we shall bring it fairly, democratically and peacefully.
They will attempt more tricks before the six weeks is over. Each time, they will be defeated by the power of our commitment to a new day in a new democratic Nigeria.

All known Boko Haram camps will be 'taken out' in six weeks- NSA

Posted: 09 Feb 2015 06:11 AM PST

Nigeria's National Security Adviser, Mohammed Sambo Dasuki, says all known Boko Haram camps in Nigeria will be taken out within the six weeks so the country can have a safe election.

Dasuki said this while responding to a question from AFP on the gains of the postponement of the 2015 general elections by INEC
"All known Boko Haram camps will be taken out. They won't be there. They will be dismantled" he said.
According to Mr Dasuki, the ongoing multinational task force launched against Boko Haram will work together to destroy all known camps of Boko Haram within the next six weeks. He said the new dates for the elections, March 28th and April 11th will not be shifted.

While speaking at the London think-tank Chatham House in Jan. 2015, the NSA chief had proposed a postponement of the general elections on grounds of insecurity in the North East as well as irregularities in the distribution of permanent voters card.

Photos: Bruce Jenner takes sobriety test after car crash that killed 69yr old woman

Posted: 09 Feb 2015 05:16 AM PST

Bruce Jenner pictured above taking a roadside sobriety test with the police just minutes after he was involved in a 4-car horror crash that left a 69 year old Kardashian neighbour dead and seven others injured in LA on Saturday Feb. 7th.

Bruce smashed his Cadillac Escalade into the back of the woman's white Lexus, which was then pushed into the path of a Hummer, leaving the vehicle a crumpled wreck and the sole occupant dead. See photos and an update on the accident after the cut...

 The moment of impact...

Bruce being driven away from the scene...

Update from TMZ
"Bruce Jenner may not be the driver who caused a woman to die on PCH Saturday ... because law enforcement tells TMZ they now believe the Prius that led the pack made a sudden stop, causing the Lexus to crash into it ... BEFORE Bruce hit the Lexus.    As TMZ first reported ... Sheriff's deputies were suspicious of the story the Prius driver told. She said she was stopped at a red light, but she was 300 feet from the light. When cops asked her if there was a line of cars in front of her she was vague. Deputies think she might have been making an illegal U-turn.
So the current scenario is this ... the Prius came to a sudden, possibly illegal stop on the highway. The Lexus hit the Prius and then Bruce slammed on his brakes, swerved right but was unable to stop, slamming into the Lexus. The Lexus then went into oncoming traffic and hit the Hummer, killing the Lexus driver.
It appears there is no criminal liability on Bruce's part. As for civil liability, there is a law that you cannot follow too close and need to prepare for sudden events. But if the Prius stopped without warning ... that driver could be at the very least partly responsible for the accident.

6:00 PM PST -- Jenner released a statement about the crash saying, "My heartfelt and deepest sympathies go out to the family and loved ones, and to all of those who were involved or injured in this terrible accident."
Bruce adds, "It is a devastating tragedy and I cannot pretend to imagine what this family is going through at this time. I am praying for them. I will continue to cooperate in every way possible."
