10yr old Nigerian girl accepted on university course in the UK to study maths degree

Posted: 23 Feb 2015 01:13 PM PST

She spends her spare time in a similar way to many other ten-year-old girls - playing with Barbie dolls and making loom bands. But the key difference between Esther Okade and other children her age is that she has been accepted to study for a university maths degree - despite not going to school.

Esther, from Walsall, West Midlands, has enrolled on an Open University course months after she passed her A-levels - and wants to study for a PhD before running her own bank.

The girl, who gained a C grade in her maths GCSE aged six, has joined the course which started this month. Her younger brother Isiah is already studying for his A-levels - also aged six.

The siblings are both home-schooled by their mother Omonefe, who has converted the living room of their semi-detached, three-bedroom house into a makeshift classroom.

Mathematician Mrs Okade, 37, said: 'Esther is doing so well. She took a test recently and scored 100 per cent. Applying to the university was an interesting process because of her age.

'We even had to talk to the vice-chancellor. After they interviewed her they realised that this has been her idea from the beginning. From the age of seven Esther has wanted to go to university.

'But I was afraid it was too soon. She would say, "Mum, when am I starting?", and go on and on and on. Finally, after three years she told me, "Mum, I think it is about time I started university now".'
Mrs Okade added that Esther - who will study for her degree at home - was 'flying' and 'so happy' when she was accepted by the university, and wants to be a millionaire.

She said: 'For now we want her to enjoy her childhood as well as her maths. By the time she was four I had taught her the alphabet, her numbers, and how to add, subtract, multiply and division.

'I saw that she loved patterns so developed a way of using that to teach her new things. I thought I would try her with algebra, and she loved it more than anything.'
Esther stunned her parents last year when she achieved a B grade in her pure maths A-level.
She applied to the Open University last August - and after a phone interview, an essay and an exam, she was told in December that she had been accepted onto the course.
Her father Paul, 42, a managing director, added: 'I cannot tell you how happy and proud I am as a father. The desire of every parent is to see their children exceed them, and take the family name to great heights, and my children have done just that.'

Jonathan distributed dollars to groups while in Lagos last week - Gov Fashola

Posted: 23 Feb 2015 12:21 PM PST

Reacting to a statement credited to President Jonathan that the PDP will set Lagos residents free from bondage if elected into government, Governor Fashola alleged that during his visit to Lagos lastweek, pres. Jonathan doled out dollars to all the groups he met with at the State House in Marina. Fashola made the allegation while inspecting some ongoing projects in Ibeju-Lekki yesterday Feb. 22nd
"I want to assume that he did not make a statement that he would deliver Lagos residents from bondage. The question to ask Mr. President is whether he'd come to free them from bondage. He was here for 5 days meeting with different people and groups, distributing money in dollars. It is an un-presidential statement made in an act of desperation. That means he lived in bondage in five days if he had come into the state to free people. If he can live here for five days moving with patrol vehicles that we paid for, let him go and spend five days in Chibok and he will know what bondage is," the governor said

The air strikes have been highly successful as they achieved the aims, hitting vital targets with required precision.  Terrorists are now in disarray as they scamper to escape from the impact of air bombardment of their locations in the forest.

IGP orders full scale investigation into death of Kano prof. who was killed after being mistaken for Boko Haram leader

Posted: 23 Feb 2015 08:55 AM PST

The Inspector General of Police has ordered a full scale investigation into the circumstances leading to the death of a leading professor of Agriculture at the Ahmadu Bello University ABU, Prof Ahmed Falaki who was killed in Kano on February 15th following suspicions he was a Boko Haram leader.

Narrating how his father was killed, one of the sons of the late Professor said his father had set out on a journey in his official car with his younger brother and his driver to Bauchi state on Saturday Feb. 14th to see a relative. As they were returning to Kano, his car developed a flat Tyre in Fala village in Tudun Wada LGA of Kano State. He said according to his father's driver, while fixing their tyre, some armed men riding on a motorcycle accosted them and demanded for the keys to his SUV which he advised his driver to give to them. The armed men sped off with his car. Shortly after, Fala villagers saw the three men and accused them of being Boko Haram members. They said the prof. was their leader and had given the vehicle to their members.

They started beating his father, his brother and driver and afterwards dragged them to Kibiya police station in Kibiya Local government area of Kano state where the late professor was accused of being a leader of the sect group.

According to the driver, despite the Professor showing them his ABU ID card, they still insisted he was a Boko Haram leader and that his ID card was fake. The villagers continued beating him with all kinds of weapons in the presence of the police officers until he died inside the police station.

The driver said when his boss died, the police men and the villagers started jubilating that they had killed a Boko Haram leader. Officers of the states Special Anti-Roberry Squad SARS afterwards came to collect his body and dropped it off at the state hospital's morgue while the driver and the Professor's brother were taken in handcuff's to the hospital.

A search for the whereabouts of their father led the children to the state morgue where they discovered his body. The hospital management informed them that a SARS officer had dropped their father's body at the morgue. They decided to call the SARS officer to find out what had happened and the officer told them on phone that their father was a Boko Haram leader and that his brother and driver are suspects and would soon be interrogated. The children immediately contacted the ABU school authority who contacted the police to inform them that they had killed a leading agriculturist.

Speaking on the incident, the Kano state Police Command PRO Majia denied any involvement of the police in the murder of the Professor, saying that it was the villagers that killed him outside the police station premises. According to Mr Majia, some gunmen had attacked the villagers and in the process, two people were killed. He said the villager,s suspecting the Professor was one of the armed men, attacked him and killed him.

The professor has since been buried.

The IG has now ordered a full scale investigation into the matter. Below is a press statement from the police.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Suleiman Abba CFR, NPOM, NPM, mni, has viewed with great concern the death in Kano, of Prof. Ahmed Falaki of the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria. He has therefore ordered the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge Zone 1, Kano, AIG Tambari Muhammed to conduct an in-depth forensic investigation on the incident with a view to unraveling the circumstances surrounding the attack and death of the renowned Professor of Agriculture.

Meanwhile, some arrests have been made in connection with the incident, and the late professor's vehicle has been recovered in Bauchi State.

The IGP wishes to assure the deceased's immediate family and the general public that the Police will do all it takes to meet the ends of justice, while perpetrators of the unfortunate incident will not go unpunished.

Mummy in the baby's world

Posted: 23 Feb 2015 07:55 AM PST

Your baby lives in an entirely different world from you and it becomes a difficult journey getting into her universe. This can be so hard that one may be forced to think that the child has a plan to torment the mother, but babies are just babies.

They sleep (if they want to at all) at a time when every other thing is at work, and they are ready to play, feed or just lay awake when the whole world is in bed. A steer from the baby's room and you just know you are in for it.

By the end of the day, as a nursing mother you are wiped out, but your energetic toddler is still up and about, fighting your every attempt at getting him or her to sleep. They resist bedtime, they want to continue the fun, and they don't want to separate from you. But for the sake of the child's health and your sanity, you both need enough sleep.

Creating a relaxing routine for sleep can do a whole world of good, a set of activity that set the pace for sleep. Try to resist the urge to play with your toddler at this hour, since it will only get her more excited than relaxed. Whether it is changing her into pajamas or changing her diaper, bathing or even brushing her teeth every night, be consistent with it so as to establish that these are the things that happen before bedtime.

No child will sleep in a state of discomfort. Even at the point of sleep, the moment a child feels any discomfort, she immediately 'cries out for help' and the sleep is then disrupted for both parties. Ensure that your baby's sleeping area is very conducive and the choice of night clothes, temperature and light is soothing. Here is the time when wearing a diaper for your baby comes in handy.

Cloth diaper should be a big no for your baby or even any other substandard disposable diaper in any case. For one, it cannot hold urine, and the irritation that arises from its use interrupts the baby's sleep. All effort made to lull the baby to sleep becomes a waste and that is aside the other side effects like skin rashes. Always endeavor to use quality diapers.

Pampers Baby-dry is one quality diaper guaranteed to effectively cater for the activities around your baby's waist area throughout the night. During sleep, the baby's tummy may reduce making ordinary diapers slack and thus leak. But the Pampers Baby-Dry has elastic sides that fit around the baby's waist whether it expand or contracts. You also do not have to worry about irritation caused by urine with Pampers Baby-Dry, it has Super Gel that keeps wetness away from the surface, keeping the baby very dry.

Pampers Baby-Dry actually guarantees superior dryness. Your baby can have up to 12 hours of uninterrupted sleep. It is made to give to give your baby apt comfort.

Creating a routine, setting the room in right order and making sure she wears Pampers Baby-Dry diaper makes for the appropriate sleep.
