Photos: South Sudanese Journalist shot dead by unknown gunmen Posted: 20 Aug 2015 12:36 PM PDT Peter Moi was yesterday, August 19th, shot dead near the offices of The New Nation newspaper in Juba where he worked. The incident comes three days after South Sudanese President, Salva Kiir made a comment on Sunday threatening to kill journalists for reporting 'against the country.' Moi's father Julius Kilong told reporters he found his son's body near UNMISS in Jebel at a place called Hai Gomaroya after receiving a phone call at about 8:30 about the shooting. He said local residents told him they heard gunfire at around 8 pm. Julius said his son was shot twice in the back but police prevented him from looking closer at the wounds. Photographs of the body reveal bloodstains on the left torso. According to AFP, his cell phone and money were not taken from his dead body which could indicate a targeted attack. The head of the Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS) Oliver Modi said the president's statement may have contributed to Peter's murder.
While condemning the killing, Modi called on the authorities to bring the perpetrators to account. "This is not what the vision of this country. When we moved from 1955 up to date the vision is very clear to establish to establish a new nation, and that was very clear in the words of the late Dr John Garang, moving from dictatorship of Khartoum regimes to a nation where we can guarantee freedom of expression, freedom of media." he added. At least seven journalists have been killed in direct relation to their work in South Sudan this year, including journalists killed by unidentified gunmen during a January ambush of an official convoy traveling through Western Bahr el Ghazal state. President Kiir is under pressure to sign a proposed peace deal to end South Sudan's 20-month civil war. He refused to sign the deal during a trip to Addis Ababa this week. The war has killed thousands of South Sudanese and displaced more than 2.2 million people, including more than 700,000 to nearby countries. Source: Radio Tamazuj (Sudanese news) |

Reduce number of policemen attached to VIPs - Buhari tells IGP Posted: 20 Aug 2015 12:12 PM PDT President Buhari has ordered the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase to reduce the number of police officers attached to Very Important Personalities in Nigeria. According to a statement by the Special Assistant to the Presient on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, President Buhari gave the directive at a meeting with officials of the Ministry of Police Affairs and the Police Service Commission in the Presidential Villa today August 20th. President Buhari at the meeting also warned that he will not tolerate any irregularities or extortion of money from unemployed Nigerians in the coming recruitment into the police. He said that applicants having to pay bribes before being accepted into the police in the past was totally unacceptable. He told the officials that those in charge of recruitment and training in the Police must be above board and must not be involved in any form of extortion and underhand dealing. "You must ensure that the recruitment process is transparent. Those who will conduct the recruitment must be above board. It should not be heard that they receive gratification or extort money from those who want to enlist in the police," he cautioned.President Buhari recently approved the recruitment of 10,000 men and women into the police force. |

Pakistan to hang disable convict from his wheelchair Posted: 20 Aug 2015 12:08 PM PDT A paraplegic man is facing the prospect of being hanged by prison officials in Pakistan from his wheelchair as he is unable to mount the scaffold. Abdul Basit, 43, was convicted of murder in 2009 but developed tuberculosis one year later, leaving him paralysed from the waist down. A "Black Warrant" was issued for his execution on July 29 but appeals from Basit's legal team led to a stay of execution. They now await a final hearing on August 25 which will decide whether to go ahead with the procedure. It means that prison officials are grappling with the conundrum of how much rope is required to hang a man who cannot support his own body weight. Basit's lawyers at Justice Project Pakistan have issued an urgent mercy appeal to Pakistan's president, Mamnoon Hussain, claiming that hanging a wheelchair-bound person is in breach of its own prison regulations. "Given that the condemned prisoner is unable to use his lower body to support his own weight and unable to stand, it is not possible to accurately measure the length of rope required for his hanging," they wrote. "Consequently, no provision can be safely made for the accurate measurement of the rope that would hang him and to proceed with an inaccurately-measured length of rope would place him at risk of an appalling death." Extracts from a prison handbook, seen by The Telegraph, stipulate that prisoners must be able to "stand" on the scaffold. One extract reads: "The drop is the length of the rope from a point on the rope outside the angle of the lower jaw of the condemned prisoner as he stands on the scaffold, to the point where the lope is embraced in the noose after allowing for the constriction of the neck that takes place in hanging. "The condemned prisoner shall mount the scaffold and shall be placed directly under the beam to which the rope is attached, the warders still holding him by the arms." As Basit would be unable to "mount" the scaffold or "stand" beneath the noose, and there are no legal provisions in place for hanging disabled people, the execution should be called off, his lawyers said. Maya Foa, the head of legal charity Reprieve's death penalty team, warned Basit's hanging would be a "cruel and violent spectacle". "The decision to go ahead with the hanging of a severely disabled man would mark a new low for the Pakistani justice system," she said. "Abdul Basit contracted tubercular meningitis while imprisoned; authorities failed to provide proper medical assistance and as a result, his illness worsened, leaving him entirely paralysed from the waist down. "Abdul's hanging would be a cruel and violent spectacle, unlawful under both Pakistani and international law, and an affront to justice and humanity. Abdul's execution should be stayed, and the moratorium reinstated, before more lives are senselessly lost."A medical report describes Basit's paraplegia as a "complication of tuberculous meningitis." "At this moment, he is having 0/5 power in lower limbs and 4/5 power in upper limbs," Dr Javaid Iqbal and Dr Anjum Mehdi wrote in the report. "In our opinion, patients with this condition are usually permanently disabled and there is almost no chance of any recovery. He is likely to remain bed bound for his life," they added.Source: The Telegraph |

British family photographs kids with beach buoy that was actually a bomb Posted: 20 Aug 2015 12:10 PM PDT A family beach outing turned terrifying last week when what was thought to be a washed-up buoy turned out to be an active bomb. "My children took their boogie boards down and we were going out to the sea," Kelly Gravell of Burry Port, Wales, said. "We saw a large object on the beach, so we thought we'd have a little look. "We get things washed up all the time, so we thought it was a buoy. We never thought for one second it was a bomb." Gravell told ABC News she, her husband, and two young children went to their local beach for a picnic on Aug. 12, when the kids noticed something wash onto the sand. That's when, she said, Erin, 6, and Ellis, 4, began posing for photos with the huge metal ball. "We were more fascinated by the barnacles on it," Gravell added. "My son was touching it and was knocking on it a little bit, and that was it really." Five days later, Pembrey Country Park officials announced on their Facebook page that the "buoy" discovered on the seashore was a United States military mine bomb. Gravell said she and her husband, Gareth, were notified of the news by a friend who saw photos of their children with the bomb on Facebook. "The realization that it was a bomb -- it was completely shocking for us," she said. "We realize now just how lucky we were." Allison Thomas-David, press and communications officer for Carmarthenshire County Council, said it's common for objects to wash ashore in the area where the mine was found. "It very much looks like a buoy, which we get on the regular, but around it was gooseneck barnacles," she said. "Of course as the barnacles started dropping off, that's when we could see writings exposed." The object reportedly dates back to World War II. While she could not verify what was printed on the bomb, or what kind of bomb it was, Thomas-David said it still remained clear that the object was indeed an explosive. "This was picked up by the coastguard who then notified the bomb squad," she added. "Obviously we evacuated the beach straightaway. It detonated in a controlled explosion 6 p.m. Monday evening." Gravell said she and her family went down to watch the detonation together. She added that in light of their experience, they will be more mindful of foreign items that wash up onto the beach. Photo: EFCC arrests suspected serial fraudster for N3.29bn fraud Posted: 20 Aug 2015 09:48 AM PDT Press statement from EFCC The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Wednesday, August 19, 2015 arrested a suspected serial fraudster, Dr. Kunle Adeshola, who issued a forged draft to the tune of N3.29billion, in a phony land deal. The suspect, who presented himself as Director, Corporate and Management Service, Amazon Inc., had allegedly entered a contract with Atkan Services Nigeria Limited for the purchase of 50 units of flats in different locations within the FCT, Abuja The apex bank consequently reported the matter to the EFCC. It will be recalled that the suspect had earlier been arrested and prosecuted by EFCC for claiming to be an Assistant Commissioner of Police seconded by the Commission to the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation, NTDC, to cleanse the rot in the agency. Adeshola, who had claimed to be Head of the EFCC Chairman's Monitoring Unit was charged to court on a seven-count bordering on forgery, impersonation, and obtaining by false pretence before Justice Usaini Baba Yusuf of the FCT High Court, Abuja. Justice Yusuf, however, struck out the charges on the grounds that they were not related to financial crimes, a ruling that has since been challenged at the appellate court by the EFCC. EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, said the suspect will be charged to court as soon as investigation is concluded. |
Woman with rare skin condition gets Tattoo as perfect response to people's stares Posted: 20 Aug 2015 09:44 AM PDT A woman with Vitilogo got a tattoo as a response to people's stares. After deciding to stop hiding her vitiligo, Tifanny Posteraro, 24, decided to take direct action to deal with the unwanted attention she received. She had the words 'It's called vitiligo' tattooed across her forearm after ditching the thick foundation she'd been wearing for years and deciding she had nothing to hide. Tiffany spent 17 years covering up her body and wearing thick make-up to avoid cruel comments about the condition, which causes pale patches to develop on the skin due to a lack of melanin. But a chance encounter with another sufferer changed her outlook and now she wears her white bits with pride. Tiffany, who lives in Brooklyn, New York and grew up in Florida, first noticed small white spots on her knees aged seven. "I showed my parents but we just thought they must be scars or something," she said. "Over time I got a few on my wrists and then it spread around my whole kneecaps. "We had no idea what it was. A dermatologist gave me some ointment but it did nothing. "Now I had a name for it but I still didn't know much about it. My parents didn't make a big deal about it. To them I was just Tiffany. It was comforting in a sense but I wish I could have known more about it. When people stared and made nasty comments, I had no comeback because I didn't understand my condition.Source: UK Mirror |

Army recalls soldiers dismissed for refusing to fight Boko Haram Posted: 20 Aug 2015 08:31 AM PDT The Nigerian Army have recalled about 3000 soldiers that were relieved of their jobs because they refused to fight Boko Haram. The soldiers refused fighting the sect because they said they lacked the appropriate weapons to engage the sect members and win the battle. According to Daily Trust, the soldiers are currently being screened at the Jaji military cantonment in Kaduna State. "The soldiers are all there in Jaji cantonment awaiting their turns to be screened by the committee and whoever scales through might be recalled. It was their prayer that if General Muhammadu Buhari becomes president, he might recall them. These soldiers are trained and it is very dangerous and wasteful if the federal government terminates their employments," a source said. One of the dismissed soldiers waiting to be screened, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the the Army did not provide them with weapons to fight Boko Haram members "I am a corporal and I have served in the Nigerian Army for the past 28 years, I have served in Bama and Baga, what I saw there was a very bad situation. We were sent there to fight insurgents without weapons and ammunition. Can you imagine, a small boy of 15 to 18 years will pursue a soldier and the soldier would run away simply because he does not have the machines that the boy has, only for the army authorities to say they were dismissing us because we refused to fight Boko Haram. Nigerian soldiers are among the best around the world, the only problem we have is that we are not equipped with the equipment needed to combat the terrorists but we have the means and resources to do that", he said |

It is what it is, I'm going to let this blow by like everything else blows by." "What can you do? At the end of the day we're all grown-ups. Like I said I'm too grown to be lying about stuff but life is life. You live and you learn." |
