A delegation of the United States Judicial Committee of the Congress has met with the officials of the Federal Ministry of Defence and the Service Chiefs as part of US efforts to enhance cooperation between the two countries in tackling Boko Haram insurgency.

This is as a follow up to President Buhari's recent visit to United States of America. It will be recalled that based on allegation of human rights abuse leveled against Nigeria by the Human Rights Organization, the United States refused to sell ammunition to Nigerian Military as enshrined in Leahy law prohibiting her from providing military assistance to foreign countries guilty of violation of human rights with impunity.

The meeting was therefore one of the efforts being made by the two countries to resolve the accusation and counter accusation by the Human Rights Organization and Nigeria. Briefing newsmen after a closed door meeting, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Alhaji Ismail Aliyu stated that having identified gaps created in the relationship between the two countries, deliberations made centred on the issues of insecurity in Nigeria and improvement on human rights. He stated that the visit of Mr President was a great gain to the country, which has rekindled the hope and aspirations of the two countries to resolve the matter.

The visitors were much concerned about the security situation in Nigeria and in the Lake Chad Basin area which informed the basis for the visit. He noted that all identified gaps would be definitely workedon. "We discussed the issues of security and human rights and they are pleased with the discussions", he concluded.

The leader of the delegation, Darrel Issa reiterated that their visit was to fashion out possible modalities towards assisting Nigeria in her challenge with additional technical support through provision of overhead surveillance and other logistics to fight boko haram and stop oil theft by pirates. He noted that discussions were made in such a way that both parties have confidence that the rules of law have been obeyed.

He pointed out that the process to lift restrictions as prescribed Leahy has begun and the US is looking forward to reactivate a proactive relationship upon which she can provide a much robust support.

Present at the meeting were the Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Gabriel Olonisakin, Chief of Army Staff, Major General Yusuf Buratai, Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Ibok Ette Ibas, Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Sadiq Abubakar, other top military officers and top government functionaries.

California police drag man out of the way of an oncoming train

Posted: 04 Aug 2015 11:41 AM PDT

Two police officers saved a man from being hit from an oncoming train and the dramatic rescue was all caught on video.
Dep. Lance Whitted, from the San Mateo County Sheriff's office, pulled a driver to safety Monday night, just seconds before a commuter train came down the tracks in Sunnyvale, California.
His partner, Dep. Erik Rueppel, tried to buy Whitted more time as he waved for the oncoming train to slow down.

"This is what we're trained to do," Whitted said. "Luckily, we were at the right place at the right time."
The driver of the car had crashed into a pole and onto the tracks as the train was coming. The dramatic video shows him falling down seconds before the train crashes into his car left on the tracks

"I don't think there was time to be scared. You just do things as safe as you can, respond and that's it. It kind of just happens," Rueppel said.

Caltrain, the operators of the train, also tweeted their thanks to the department
The driver had minor injuries.

Kim Kardashian's selfie book, Selfish, has only sold 32,000 copies

Posted: 04 Aug 2015 09:14 AM PDT

Kim Kardashian's book of selfies, 'Selfish', has sold a paltry 32,000 copies since it was released 3 months ago on May 5. With 41.4 million followers, Kim is the 2nd most popular celebrity on Instagram, after Beyoncé, so you'd think her book will sell out.

Fans who've been happy to see her selfies for free haven't been too eager to spend $9.97 to buy the book.

While the book is a #1 bestseller in the very niche category of 'celebrity photography' on Amazon , it's ranked at only 2,075 in books overall by Amazon.

It's surprising because when she released 500 limited edition copies of her book, they were sold on Gilt.com for $60 each in April, sold out in just one minute.

Boko Haram initiates moves for dialogue – CCC

Posted: 04 Aug 2015 08:15 AM PDT

The Executive Secretary of the Center for Crisis Communication CCC, Air Commodore Yusuf Anas (rtd) says Boko Haram members have made contacts with the center to initiate dialogue with the federal government on how to stop their activities in Nigeria.

This comes after President Buhari stated in a recent CNN interview that he's open for dialogue with the sect members.Air Comodore Anas said this during a press briefing in Abuja today August 4th.

"The efforts by some members of the group to get across to the Centre and the discussions we have had, have been encouraging. We have taken measures also to ascertain the genuineness or otherwise of these persons. We believe they are ready for genuine dialogue. However, discussions are still ongoing and nothing concrete has been arrived at, but it is an opportunity to interact with what I call insiders in the Boko Haram group. Some prominent Nigerians have in recent times canvassed the idea of dialogue with the Boko Haram. The option of dialogue according to them, at the moment provides a leeway of not only safely rescuing the abducted Chibok School Girls alive but also possibly bringing to an end, the orgy of violence unleashed on innocent Nigerians by the group. Considering the unspeakable atrocities which the group has visited on Nigeria and Nigerians, this option is no doubt a hard sell. However, the recent statement of President Muhammadu Buhari on government's readiness to negotiate with credible members of the sect has rekindled hope for dialogue. From discussions held so far, the members seem to be speaking on behalf of a cross section of the group. They expressed willingness to come forward to make certain proposals on behalf of other members of the group. If we pursue this line, I believe something positive will come out. The Centre however suggests that such dialogue should be done with every sense of caution and responsibility bearing in mind the previous disappointments that attended attempts at negotiations" he said
