One Mr. Ibiteye Bamidele (pictured above), a bureau de change operator who was arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for being in possession of the $2.1m cash suspected to be laundered, had implicated the ex-NHIS boss. The suspect was however declared wanted by the EFCC on Thursday on the suspicion that he had absconded to evade justice. But Thomas, a former Commissioner for Health in Ekiti State voluntarily submitted himself for interrogation on Friday at EFCC Headquarters in Abuja but denied that he was planning to run away because he did not get any invitation from the anti-graft agency. Dressed in a white brocade, Dr. Thomas who arrived the EFCC around 10: am was drilled by the commission's operative to ascertain his level of complicity. He was released at about 2:pm. However, the EFCC spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren could not be reached as at press time to confirm the interrogation. His media aide, Mr. Sola Adeyemi had in a statement described his boss as a thoroughbred professional and dutiful public servant who would not stand in the face of the law. The statement reads in part,"Dr. Femi Thomas is a law-abiding public individual that has treatable addresses in Lagos and Ekiti. He is a man that I work with and I know him for his words and actions. As I speak, we are yet to receive any formal invitation from any quarter on the allegation. "For the avoidance of doubt, my boss is not on the run, he is in Nigeria, he is available and ready to present himself to the EFCC as soon as he is invited." |
Thai man sentenced to 30yrs in prison for Facebook posts insulting monarchy Posted: 07 Aug 2015 12:50 PM PDT A 48-year-old man named Pongsak Sriboonpeng was today Friday August 7th handed the lengthy prison sentence by the military court, having been prosecuted under Thailand's royal defamation law. His lawyer Sasinan Thamnithinan told AFP that his sentence was 60 years - a decade for each six Facebook posts he made but this was halved as he had pleaded guilty. "It's broken the record," she said about the severe jail term. She further added that because Pongsak was arrested while Thailand was still under martial law there was no right to appeal the sentence passed by the military court. Under Section 112 of the Criminal Code, anyone convicted of insulting the king, queen, heir or regent faces up to 15 years in prison on each count. Shocking video shows terrified women mobbed by jeering men as they walk along Saudi Arabian street Posted: 07 Aug 2015 09:17 AM PDT YouTube footage has captured the moment two terrified women are hounded by a horde of jeering men as they walk along a promenade in Saudi Arabia. In the minute-long video, the 2 young women - dressed in traditional burkhas and face veils - become visibly distressed as they are harassed and intimidated by jeering men. The clip recently went viral in the country & sparked public outrage, prompting a police investigation which reportedly led to six boys being detained & questioned. But shockingly, the women are now being blamed for 'provoking' the reaction from the crowd by being 'indecent'. The outlandish claim is being supported by the emergence of a new video supposedly taken from the scene, which has been shown on semi-official news channels. The second video purports to show the same women riding a quad-bike to the promenade, with one of them tossing their agal towards the men in a 'seductive and tempting' manner. An agal is the black rope worn by Saudi men over their traditional checkered head cloths. Thanks to the emergence of this new video, the women were no longer seen as victims by viewers in Saudi Arabia and were accused of provoking the men. Source: UK Daily Mail |
Photos: EFCC arrest two bank officials for N3.6billion fraud Posted: 07 Aug 2015 09:10 AM PDT Press statement from EFCC below... A crack team of operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Thursday, August 6, 2015 arrested one Kato Ifrahimu Nyam and Godwin Odali, both staff of a new generation bank for conspiring to defraud the bank to the tune of N3.6bn (three billion, six million naira) with an e-payment mandate purportedly from Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The suspects, who operate as syndicate, sometime in June 2015, through their cronies submitted an e-payment mandate of N1.4bn (one billion, four hundred million naira) to Zenith bank and Access bank Plc. The banks, sensing a foul play after noticing some abnormalities on the e-payment mandate discretely contacted the Ministry of Agriculture Agriculture for confirmation and authentication of the document. A response from the Ministry showed that, no mandate was sent to the banks. Hence, the EFCC was contacted for investigation. While the investigation was underway, the suspects in furtherance of their dubious acts submitted another e-payment mandate of N1.398bn (one billion, three hundred and ninety eight million naira) to Zenith bank, Abuja branch though one Abiola Oloko, an accomplice. In the process, Oloko was arrested by EFCC operatives. On arrest, Oloko confessed that, they have had several meetings to arrange and perfect "the deal". Oloko, who claimed to be a job seeker said, he was lured into "the business" by the bank officials whom he claimed gave him an identity card of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to answer the false name "Femi Babatunde", but with his real passport photograph affixed to it. The suspects will be arraigned in court as soon as investigation into the matter is concluded. Media & Publicity 6th August, 2015 |

One of the passengers, Phil Cobucci when recounting what happened said "No one heard anything. The plane really just stopped in the middle of the tarmac. The captain said, 'We had a misfire,' which didn't really make it sound like the picture I saw (later) when they started popping up on Twitter. There wasn't any drama. Everyone is fine. A LIB reader asks a medical question Posted: 07 Aug 2015 08:37 AM PDT From a LIB reader I did a biopsy on venous malformation, and my result indicates that if I'm going to remove the whole malformation through surgery there is every tendency that the malformation will be back. Besides the scar on the biopsy, I did was really bad. I cant imagine how the scar will look if carried out on the main region. So I read about veineous malformation treatment and I found that Multiple sclerotherapeutic sessions, Venous embolization, Endovenous laser therapy can shrink up the swollen vien without surgery being carried out. According to general hospital they said I can only get treatment outside the country and since I have no money going abroad for this treatment, I want to know if there are any private hospitals that are specialized in using this treatment in Nigeria. Can I please have answers? |

According to a statement signed and released by Senior Special Adviser to the president on media and publicity Garba Shehu today August 7th, President Buhari charged the Federal Ministry of Defence to produce a plan for the establishment of a modest Military Industrial Complex for the local production of weapons to meet some of the requirements of the country's armed forces. The statement after the cut.. President Muhammadu Buhari Friday in Abuja directed the Federal Ministry of Defence to produce a plan for the establishment of a modest Military Industrial Complex for the local production of weapons to meet some of the requirements of the country's armed forces. Speaking at the graduation ceremony of the National Defence College, President Buhari described as unacceptable, Nigeria's current over-dependence on other countries for critical military equipment and logistics. "We must evolve viable mechanisms for near-self-sufficiency in military equipment and logistics production complemented only by very advanced foreign technologies. "The Ministry of Defence is being tasked to draw up clear and measurable outlines for development of a modest Military Industrial Complex for Nigeria. "In this regard, it is to liaise with other strategic MDAs and industries to re-engineer the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) to meet national military hardware and logistics requirements," the President said. President Buhari told the gathering that his administration had, since its assumption of office, reviewed the nature and character of Nigeria's security threats and challenges. "We recognized first and foremost, the external dimensions of these threats and the need for international cooperation and common security mechanisms to tackle them," the President said.
The President assured that the Federal Government under his leadership will strive to meet the operational, logistic, training and welfare requirements of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
