ABC of Digital Migration (2)

Posted: 23 Aug 2015 06:33 AM PDT

Digital broadcasting, as explained in the first installment of this article, is a more efficient way of transmitting sound and pictures and which offers a number of potential benefits. The transition from analogue to digital impacts television viewers, media companies and TV channels in different ways.

Digital broadcasting, for one, has enormous potential to improve both the quantity and quality of what is available on television and to increase the number of people who will be able to watch it.

In the future, broadcasters will be able to offer High Definition (HD) programmes to their viewers.

And because the digital broadcast signal can be compressed, spectrum can be freed up and this can be sold to communications operators who want to provide better wireless broadband services. With the possibility of better compression, broadcasters will be able to offer several channels of programming in spectrum that previously was only able to transmit a single analogue channel. As such, viewers will be be offered a wider range of channels. This, however, is subject to the broadcasters finding a business model to make the additional channels financially viable. The possibility of more channels also comes the chance that such channels will include those in local languages. This, naturally, will make television programming more comprehensible to a greater number of people.More channels certainly means more content is required. As a result, content producers will have more patronage and will need to expand their capacity to meet the demand. This leads to the possibility of creation of more jobs in the industry as well as in related industries.

Digital broadcasting offers a much improved reception capability, including the elimination of ghosting (replication of the transmitted image) and other transmission errors. Another benefit inherent in digital broadcasting is the possibility of programme enhancements on separate channels to the primary programme. These include additional camera angles on  sports broadcast and player statistics. Digital broadcast also comes with the possibility that broadcasters will be able to broadcast more than one channel when some events like sporting matches, extended beyond time due to circumstances outside the broadcaster's control and overlap a scheduled news programme. This will allow viewers the option of continuing to watch the end of the event or news bulletin.

GEJ is not a drunkard - Reuben Abati

Posted: 23 Aug 2015 05:27 AM PDT

Former Spokesperson to former President Jonathan, Reuben Abati, says contrary to what many believe, Jonathan is not a drunkard. He said for all the years he worked as Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the former president, he only saw him drink wine during government functions. Abati cleared the air during a recent interview with Rockcity 101.9 FM, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
"President Jonathan does not drink. You see, that's one of the myths about that administration and you must understand how this thing is, it's all about perception, communication, it's all about what goes out and it's about stereotyping. People just stereotype people from a particular part of the country as drunkards, and they look for justification for one type of behaviour or the other.
But I can tell you that in my 4 years of working for President Jonathan, I never found him in a bibulous situation. If he ever tasted any drink, maybe a glass of wine during special occasions. All those stories about him drinking, about President Jonathan always being berated, about bibulous situations inside the Villa, those things did not exist. The people must find justifications to say this is why we think this situation is this way it is. I tell you and Nigerians will remember that he is a very humble man; he is a very committed person to the Nigerian project. If you look at the results of the elections, you'll see that he lost the elections with about 2.5 million votes or thereabout, which means that a large number of Nigerians still believed in him and also believed in his ability and his capability of his administration to move Nigeria forward. We were dealing with a democracy; the people have a right to make a choice, when the people make a choice, we respect that choice. And our commitment as Nigerians, whoever we may be, whatever we maybe our station, is to remain committed to Nigeria, and to support whoever has emerged and to respect the choice and the decision of Nigerians. This is not about witch-hunt, it's not about criticising people, the Nigerian people have spoken and we stand by the decision of the Nigerian people. And we all support whoever is there to move Nigeria forward. So this backward looking, can we just look forward? Can we all just work together to move Nigeria forward? For me, that is where the emphasis should be, because we are all Nigerians and at the end of the day the country is more important than all of us"he said.

Last administration paid N140bn as consultancy fee for the 2nd Niger bridge -Oshiomhole alleges

Posted: 23 Aug 2015 04:57 AM PDT

Edo state governor, Adams Oshiomhole has alleged that a whooping N140bn was paid as consultancy fee for the construction of a second Niger bridge by the last administration. Oshiomhole  said this while reacting to insinuations that the Buhari led government was victimizing the Igbos because they did not vote for him. He said if at all there was any victimization, it was in the last administration.
"For those who are interested in politics of sharing, I am not interested; I am interested in the politics of baking. If the competent hands come from one family and they will deliver to the nation so be it. If a Kenyan can be elected as an American President why should we continue to discuss South South or South East.
The second Niger Bridge is what Ndigbo needs to ask Jonathan, where is that bridge? They did ground breaking, water breaking, where is the bridge? When Father Mbaka talked about the shame of Onitsha-Enugu road, people misconstrued his comments. Let me tell you, if the Igbos were marginalized, it was by President Jonathan under the PDP. Even the consultancy they did in the name of the second Niger Bridge, the expenditure they incurred which is not on ground, about 700 million dollars of that was funded from the Sovereign Wealth Fund which is money not belonging to the Federal Government but to the 774 Local Government Areas, the 36 states and of course the Federal Government. We called them to appear before us and they said they spent 700 million dollars from the Sovereign Wealth fund and I asked them where is the bridge? That 700million dollars amounted to N140billion on the second Niger Bridge and that money belongs to the three tiers of government. Okonjo Iweala was shouting on the need to have a Sovereign Wealth Fund but you can see what they used the money for. Those are the issues the Igbos should ask Jonathan to account for. Where is our bridge? Where is the dual carriage way from Onitsha to Owerri and Enugu. The roads in the South South as Obasanjo will say are embarrassment to the people of the South South. You cannot drive to Yenagoa, no road; so much noise about East West road, where is the road? You go to Akwa Ibom the Federal roads there are in bad shape. I have listened to governors from the South East, they will tell you there are no roads in the South East. So if the Igbos were marginalized, it was President Jonathan and the PDP. If Nigerians know what these people did, they will stone them to death – jungle justice. 700 million dollars gone on second Niger bridge without any bridge to show"he said

Mrs Buhari can't be head of Africa's First Ladies if she's not the First Lady of Nigeria, can she?

Posted: 23 Aug 2015 03:26 AM PDT

Presidential media aide Shehu Garba said something recently that I want us to discuss. Find it below..
"Out of respect to Mrs. Buhari, the Sierra-Leonian First Lady, Mrs. Sia Koroma recently surrendered her position of head of Africa's First Ladies to Mrs. Buhari, inviting her to take up the same seat which Mrs. Jonathan hurriedly handed over a few weeks to the handover of her husband's government to President Buhari. Again, all these things are currently under consideration and no decision has been arrived at presently"
If Pres. Buhari has or wants to abolish the office of The First Lady during his administration, (the media has been asked to refer to Aisha Buhari as the wife of the president and not First Lady) does it not disqualify her to head Africa's First Lady, since she's technically not a First Lady? Thoughts?

I ask because Mr Garba said that they are considering it. Below are other things he said...
"President Buhari promised that there would be a clear difference between the role played by his wife during his tenure and that played by many previous First Ladies.
"All that ostentation, ubiquitousness and arrogance we have come to expect from the office are over and done with. Change has come.
"The ideal platform from which she will be useful to Nigeria's women and children is still being thought out. Once this has been concluded on, Mrs. Buhari's role will become clearer to all Nigerians. There will be nothing shady or hidden about it. There will be no access to public funds. It will be purely private and voluntary."

Photo of man killed when a jet crashed into his car as he drove home from work

Imagine if he'd been just 10 minutes late in leaving work yesterday...he probably would still be alive today. Quite sad! Gym instructor Matt Jones, said to be in his 20s, was on his way home from work yesterday afternoon when a vintage Hawker Hunter jet smashed into his BMW 3 Series Coupe in a ball of flames during the Shoreham Airshow display in London yesterday.

7 people were killed on the ground and Police fear that the death toll may rise as some of the people in the hospital are in critical condition. The jet's pilot, Andy Hill was pulled from the burning wreckage and is also in a critical condition in the hospital.

Dear LIB readers: what do you do if you find out your husband wants to divorce you?

Posted: 23 Aug 2015 06:23 AM PDT

From a female LIB reader. Please read below...
"We have been married for just four years with a child. But he said he is no longer happy and wants a divorce. He told his brother he only married me because I got pregnant and that I am not the love of his life. The woman he was dating when I fell pregnant has since married but he still wants out of the marriage. The only problem is, he's not talking to me about it, he's talking to other members of his family and asking them the way forward. He traveled to the US in 2013 and hasn't returned since. He asked them to return my bride price. He has refused to talk to me. I am so hurt and confused. What should I do? Fight for my marriage or let him go?
