| Rafa Benitez releases statement after being sacked by Real Madrid Posted: 05 Jan 2016 01:23 PM PST  Rafa Benitez has released a statement following his sack as Real Madrid manager after just seven months and three losses. In a statement released on his website, the 55-year-old Madrid native thanked those at Real Madrid for allowing him to work at the club and wished his successor Zinedine Zidane luck for the future. | Photo: Saudi Arabia Defence Ministry website hacked after Shia cleric's execution Posted: 05 Jan 2016 01:17 PM PST  The cyber-attack was carried out on Sunday night by a group of young Saudis called "Brave Youth Fighting Religious Taboos" and remained inaccessible for several hours. The hackers said their attack on the Saudi Defense Ministry's website was meant as retribution for the execution of Sheikh Nimr by the Riyadh government. "We will continue defending the religious sanctities and also targeting the enemies and oppressors involved in the killing of the freedom-seekers and revolutionaries," the hackers said in a statement issued after hacking the website. |

| Posted: 05 Jan 2016 01:14 PM PST   In a move that has been hailed by many as resilient and triumphant in the fight against terrorism, Garissa University College reopened Monday, January 4, nine months after it was closed down following a terrorist attack by Al-Shabaab that resulted in the deaths of 148 people, most of them students. A memo to staff and students stated that an academic board meeting would take place following the reopening. Both academic and non academic staff were asked to report back on Wednesday. 109 students who survived the attack will have their fees paid for a year by the French government. They will also be given a living allowance, according to a statement by the French Embassy back in November 17.      The university was reopened amidst heightened security, as the varsity's staff assembled for the first staff meeting. During the low-key ceremony at the institution, the college principal, Prof Ahmed Osman Warfa, said most of the staff had reported back to work. The campus, a constituent college of the Eldoret-based Moi University, was the scene of a 10-hour siege when Al-Shabaab gunmen stormed it in the early hours of April 2, 2015. |

| ‘Don’t kill Metuh’ – PDP cries out...Says arrest last straw that may break Nigeria’s democracy Posted: 05 Jan 2016 12:39 PM PST  The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) demands an immediate release of the party's National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, who was Tuesday morning invited and detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission This development, which did not come to us as a surprise given series of threats to our party's spokesman by the APC and the Federal Government, who are obviously not comfortable with our stance on the confused state of the nation under their watch, is a continuation of APC's grand design to silence and decimate the PDP.The arrest of Chief Metuh today underscores the growing political intolerance in our country and the foisting of a police state which was last Wednesday underscored by the President and Commander-in-Chief himself, who defended why a government in a democracy should flout constitutional provision and brazenly disobey court orders. This onslaught against our spokesman, according to intelligence available to us is part of a larger script by the government to ensure that PDP wings are finally clipped in their mission to install a dictatorial one-party state in the country. The excesses of security agencies under this government, especially the Directorate of Security Services (DSS) and the EFCC, in abridging the human rights of PDP members have become worrisome and a threat to our democratic evolution. Nigerians and the international community will recall that on a number of occasions, the PDP, through its spokesman has been outspoken on some undemocratic proclivities being exhibited by the APC-led Federal Government in the last seven months. The PDP insists that for whatever reason Chief Metuh was arrested, his rights as a citizen under the law must not be trampled upon. We therefore demand for his immediate release and that due process of investigation and prosecution concerning him should be strictly adhered to. We state this because we have been made aware of top directives to break Chief Metuh and if possible poison him during his detention by the EFCC. Chief Metuh, has since his arrest at about 10 am, has been kept incommunicado, with his lawyers denied access to him. The PDP declares the arrest of our spokesman as the last straw that may break our democracy. We therefore forewarn the Federal Government and its agencies to save our democracy and forthwith release our National Publicity Secretary. We are also calling on the international community and well-meaning Nigerians to stand up for this democracy, which our party nurtured for 16 years and deepened to a level where the opposition, for the first time in our political history, had the opportunity to win in a general election. | Police find woman's dismembered body in suitcases but it gets more bizarre Posted: 05 Jan 2016 12:36 PM PST   A woman's severed head encased in a block of concrete, was later found after an extensive search next to a man's body at the bottom of an Austrian lake, in what police suspect is a murder-suicide. Authorities said that evidence suggests the man strangled the woman and dismembered her body before drowning himself using the concrete block with her head in.  The hands of the man, whose body showed no signs of struggle, were tied to bags containing rocks as well as personal belongings. The head of the woman, who was between 50 and 70 years old, was discovered after forensic experts in the city of Salzburg broke open a concrete block found in one of the bags on the lakebed.  'This makes us primarily think of an 'extended suicide',' a prosecutor for the nearby town of Wels, Birgit Ahamer, told a news conference, adding that initial forensic examinations suggested the woman had been strangled and the man had drowned. Police said they could not yet identify the bodies. |

| Pics: Draya announces she is expecting a child with fiance, Orlando Scandrick Posted: 05 Jan 2016 12:00 PM PST  These two nearly killed each other last year...even getting a restraining order against the order but they managed to patch things up and are now expecting their first child together. Draya Michele has confirmed that she is expecting a child with her fiance Dallas Cowboys cornerback, Orlando Scandrick. The reality star and actress did a photoshoot with People Magazine to formally announce the good news.  "I'm not sure what made me decide to take a home pregnancy test, but I decided on taking two at the same time!" Michele, 30, tells PEOPLE "They were both positive and I was instantly excited." Michele has a 13-year-old son, Kniko while Scandrick, 28, is dad to 6-year-old twin daughters Taylor and Tatiana. The couple will welcome a son in late April.  "We made an appointment to see the sex of the baby for 16 weeks, but surprisingly at 12 weeks, our doctor was able to see that he was a boy," she said. "Technology and ultrasound machines are much more advanced than 13 years ago when i had my first child." |

| Turkish Airlines compensates passengers for delayed luggage Posted: 05 Jan 2016 11:12 AM PST  The decision to compensate the affected passengers was due to the intervention of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) on the matter. According to the General Manager, Public Affairs, NCAA, Mr Sam Adurogboye, who made this known to journalists, on Tuesday, Turkish Airlines has compensated all the passengers whose luggage were delayed in the flight. He added that the airline under the supervision of the Consumer Protection Officers (CPO) of the regulatory authority ensured that the passengers were paid full monetary compensation as contained in the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations (NCARs) and that a cargo flight and an Airbus were arranged to freight to Abuja, Nigeria, all contentious backlog of baggage which all the concerned passengers, have collected. Adurogboye added that the compensation and transportation of the backlog of luggage of the affected passengers were contained in a report of the investigation carried out by NCAA over the recent tarmac invasion by Turkish Airlines passengers submitted to the Director General of NCAA, Captain Muhtar Usman. | Facebook blocks a photo of iconic little Mermaid statue, says it has 'sexual undertones' Posted: 05 Jan 2016 08:18 AM PST  A Danish member of parliament tried to share a photo of Copenhagen's iconic Little Mermaid statue on Facebook but received a rejection notification saying it could not be published because of rules on nudity. The rejection message shared by MP Mette Gjerskov on Facebook, which has now gone viral, says, "The image contained too much bare skin or sexual undertones".  Facebook also added that the rules applied for images which have 'artistic or educational' purpose. However, it later relented and approved the image. The social media giant had clarified its stand on nudity and its community standards in general on March 15, 2015. "We remove photographs of people displaying genitals or focusing in on fully exposed buttocks. We also restrict some images of female breasts if they include the nipple, but we always allow photos of women actively engaged in breastfeeding or showing breasts with post-mastectomy scarring. We also allow photographs of paintings, sculptures and other art that depicts nude figures," it said. Facebook said that its harsh stand "can sometimes be more blunt than we would like and restrict content shared for legitimate purposes". But from time to time it has encountered problems over legitimate posts. |
| Cross Rivers state gov pays unscheduled visit to ministries, locks out absent commissioners Posted: 05 Jan 2016 08:13 AM PST  Among the ministries he visited include the Ministries of Agriculture, Water Resources, Women Affairs and Sustainable Development. Only the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Stella Odey was on sit to receive him when he arrived. The commissioners for Agriculture Prof. Egrinya Eneji, Water Resources Gabe Odu Orji and Sustainable Development Oliver Orok were all absent when he visited. A very disappointed governor Ayade, while commending Odey, said he will not tolerate any act of lateness from any commissioner "I am saddened by what I have seen this morning. It is shocking that it is already past 8:00am, yet commissioners cannot be found on their seats. I will not take kindly to this culture of lateness to work and I am going to do something about it. I must, however, commend you for your exceptional conduct. Please do keep it up."he said |
