Fear of Boko Haram: 250 female students of FGGC relocated

Posted: 11 Mar 2014 12:02 PM PDT

Over 250 female students of the Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Monguno in Borno State have been relocated to another school in Maiduguri following recent attacks on public schools in the North by Boko Haram members.

The Principal of FGGC Maiduguri told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri yesterday that the students were relocated last week

"The students started coming on March 3, shortly after the mass transfer, they are still coming. As at this morning (Monday), we have about 225 students. But I believe by now the figure will have risen to 250.
"We have already accommodated them in our hostels, especially where we had vacant rooms. Since they are all girls, we have identified an unoccupied three bed-room bungalow for possible conversion into a hostel accommodation for them if their number increases. They were transferred with 70% of their teachers, who have also started reporting for duty," The principal said.

OPC members rescue raped 14 year old girl in Agege

Posted: 11 Mar 2014 08:16 AM PDT

Members of the O'odua People's Congress, OPC, and concerned Lagosians rescued a teenager, who was raped, robbed and abandoned by an unidentified man in Agege area of Lagos, PM News reports
The OPC members saw the secondary schoolgirl on Sunday, 9 March in a traumatized state at a public toilet near NITEL Office, at Oko Oba, Agege
And after giving her first aid treatment, the teenager was handed over to the police at the Agege Elere Police Divisional Headquarters, who referred her to Orile Agege General Hospital,  Agege for a comprehensive medical treatment.
The teenager, who will be 15 by August, narrated that she came from Osun State and was on her way to Badagry to stay with her aunty who had just given birth, but decided to have a stay the night at Agege, when it became late (around 9.p.m.) and she couldn't get a bus to her destination. Continue...
The traumatised girl told the OPC members that when it became dark she decided to sleep in front of a shopping complex, near Elere Police Divisional Headquarters, till the next day.
The victim said that shortly after she spread some cartons and was about to sleep, a man pushed her from behind and she fell on the floor.

She narrated that the man used her belt to tie her neck and used a cloth to cover her face and started raping her.

The victim said she screamed and shouted for help but there was no one to rescue her and the man raped her four times.

She alleged that thereafter, a night guard, whom she described as huge and tall, and wore eyeglasses, came with a torch light and left with the rapist to an unknown destination.
She alleged that the night guard left her with blood all over her body without making any attempt to help her.

She alleged that the guard only came the next day to chase her across the road to the public toilet where she was later found by the OPC members and sympathisers.

"It was at this spot that the OPC members and other sympathisers saw me. They started pouring water on my head because I had no strength. The man after raping me stole my handset and left with the guard. Before they left, they asked me how much I needed but I said I didn't need their money," the teenager said. The girl appealed to the Federal Government and the Lagos State government to come to her aid and ensure the culprits do not go unpunished.

The DPO, CSP Eze Philip, of  Elere Police Divisional Headquarters, has begun  investigation on the matter,  after instructing that  the victim should be taken to the nearby hospital for quick medical attention to save her life. The girl is still receiving treatment, while her father has been contacted in Osun State.

Phones of passengers on missing plane still ringing, relatives claim

Posted: 11 Mar 2014 06:36 AM PDT

This Malaysian plane disappearance has to be the most mysterious incident that has happened in recent history. Late yesterday, relatives of some of the passengers on board the vanished aircraft who are lodged in a hotel, claimed they were still able to call the cellphones of their missing loved ones.

Washington Post reports that some relatives said that they were getting ring tones and could see them active online through a Chinese instant messenger service called QQ. One man in particular claimed he could see that the QQ account of his brother-in-law showed him as online, but when he sends a message, he gets no reply. The calls have also not been picked up. This is scary!

Aliko Dangote ready to redeem $1million promise to Super Eagles

Posted: 11 Mar 2014 03:50 AM PDT

Billionaire business man Aliko Dangote says he is ready to redeem his promise of awarding $1m to the Super Eagles for winning the 2013 African Cup of Nations last year in South Africa. He said this a few days after goal keeper and Super Eagles vice-captain Vincent Enyeama begged him and others who pledged various things to the team to fulfill their promises.
"We understand the busy schedule of Alhaji Dangote, we are just asking his aides to help remind him of the promise to us. It's just a reminder to patriots who are very busy and may not have been prompted after they made their pledges, because the players are determined to bring more honours to fatherland at the forthcoming World Cup" Enyeama said
Speaking with BBC Sports, Dangote said the only reason he hasn't redeemed his promise was because nobody from the team or NFF had contacted him
"We've been waiting for Nigerian officials to collect the money but nobody has written to us. We will write to them, asking for the account numbers of the players, then we'll make the transfer immediately."

The police say the teenager is an Iranian asylum seeker on his way to Germany

Malaysian police say the identity of the other man is still under investigation and no longer strongly believes that the missing plane was attacked by terrorists. They say are now looking into four main areas: sabotage, hijacking or psychological problems among either the crew or the passengers.

Photos: Nigerians in Germany protest against the Nigerian Govt

Posted: 11 Mar 2014 02:26 AM PDT

Nigerians in Germany yesterday March 10, protested against the Nigerian government financial recklessness and insecurity in the country. The protest took place on Neue Jakobstrasse, the street that lodges the Nigerian embassy.

The protest which started by 10am had the German police on ground all through the protest which lasted for four hours. Continue...

Fliers which served as cahier de doleance were distributed to passers-by and the embassy callers. The fliers read:
"168 Million Nigerians are under siege. At the mercy of a reckless, fascist government that has made corruption its deadly official policy. The Nigerian people demand sanctions and travel bans on political officers and global attention to the economic terrorism. There are 100 million destitute Nigerians while government officials loot billions of US Dollars every year. We call for global attention to the crises to the largest African nation and a very important nation in Africa and the world. What affects one man, affects all men".
The group of Nigerians also bore placards with messages like:
'It is easier to find a needle in a dark room than to find 20 Billion Dollars in Nigeria'; 'Boko Haram kills innocent citizens, Nigerian government celebrates centenary. Hundreds of Nigerians (Including school children) dead within a week'
At the end of the protest, two Embassy officials also gave the assurance that the message of the protest will be conveyed to the government.

The officials were also informed that plans are in top gear to mobilize for protest whenever the President and/or his wife are in Germany on their ritual medical trip.

Mother sells three-day-old baby for N260,000 in Akwa Ibom

Posted: 11 Mar 2014 12:56 AM PDT

According to a report by Punch, a nursing mother in Akwa Ibom named Imaobong Udoh (pictured above) has been arrested for allegedly selling her 3-day old baby girl for N260,000. Full report below

Also arrested along with Imaobong were four persons for allegedly participating in the theft of the baby.
They are the buyer, Mrs. Regina James; her husband, Mfon James; the traditional birth attendant who delivered the baby, Mrs. Comfort Henry; and Mr Emmanuel Okon, a homeopathic doctor, who arranged the sale.
Commissioner of Police, Mr. Umar Gwadabe, said in Uyo on Monday that the father of the baby had reported the theft to the police, leading to the arrest of the suspects.
Gwadabe said, "On March 3, 2014, a case of child stealing was reported by Mr. Eteobong James, of No. 33 Urua Ekpa Road, Itu Local Governmnet Area, to the police, where a three-day-old baby girl was sold for N260, 000.

"Based on the report, the suspects were arrested.
"Mr Emmanuel Etim Okon, was the one that arranged the infamous deal and personally conveyed the baby from the point of delivery at Nna-Enin in Uruan Local Government Area to the buyers at No. 37 Church Road, Uyo."

The police boss explained that Regina allegedly paid N150,000 to the mother of the baby and N110,000 to Okon, the homeopathic doctor, for his services.

The commissioner stated that the accused would soon be arraigned in court and warned child thieves to steer clear of the state.
He explained that the state would not be conducive for their illicit trade.

Husband of the buyer, James, who spoke with PUNCH METRO said when his wife told him she was pregnant, he gave her money for ante-natal care, but was surprised to hear that she bought the baby.
He said, "l am a trader. My wife, Regina, told me she was pregnant and I gave her money for ante-natal. One day, she told me she was in labour and later informed me that she had been delivered of a baby girl.

"I did not know she bought the baby since she has given birth to four children, though three died."
However, the homeopathic doctor said Regina brought the mother of the baby, Imaobong, to him so that he could take care of her during ante-natal.
He said Regina had explained to him that the father of the baby was not financially buoyant to take care of her.

He denied collecting N110,000 from Regina, stating that he only collected N30,000, which was the cost of delivery of Imaobong's baby.
"When Regina brought Imaobong to me, she told me that the man responsible for the pregnancy was unable of take care of her.

"The N30,000 I collected from her was for the upkeep of Imaobong before and during delivery of the baby. I did not collect N110,000."

Cristiano Ronaldo declared World's Richest Footballer with €148m

Posted: 10 Mar 2014 04:18 PM PDT

Today Monday March 10th, popular football website Goal.com released their Rich List and declared Real Madrid and Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo as the richest active footballer in the world.

The World Footballer of the Year held off rival Lionel Messi in the 2014 Goal Rich List with an estimated wealth of €148million. Retired footballer David Beckham was the 2013 Goal Rich List winner but since he's retired from football, he's no longer eligible to be put in the list.

Messi comes second with an estimated net worth of €146million followed by Eto'o with €85million then Wayne Rooney with €84million, and Kaka rounds off the top 5 with €82million.

But Goal made it clear that the list is based on the revenue of active players over the course of their entire careers and not just the previous year. See the top 10 richest footballers after the cut...

One of the men who boarded Malaysian flight on stolen passport looked like Mario Balotelli - authorities reveal

Posted: 10 Mar 2014 03:49 PM PDT

Malaysian authorities have revealed that one of the two men who used stolen passports to board the missing Malaysian Airlines plane looked like Mario Balotelli.

As it emerged an Iranian businessman known only as Mr Ali was understood to have booked the tickets for the two passengers using the stolen passports, the men who boarded the plane were said to have not been of 'Asian appearance'.

Malaysia's police chief was quoted by local media as saying that one of the men had been identified.

Civil aviation chief Azharuddin Abdul Rahman declined to confirm this, but said authorities were looking at the possibility the men were connected to a stolen passport syndicate. Continue...

A vessel is seen from a flying Soviet-made plane during a search operation for the missing plane over the South China Sea
Asked by a reporter what they looked like 'roughly', he said: 'Do you know of a footballer by the name of (Mario) Balotelli? He is an Italian. Do you know how he looks like?'

A reporter then asked, 'Is he black?' and the aviation chief replied, 'Yes'.

Authorities had today still found no trace of the missing plane despite searches by ships from six navies and dozens of military aircraft.

A Thai travel agent who arranged the tickets for the two passengers has now said she had booked them on the flight via Beijing because they were the cheapest tickets, it has been reported.
The travel agent in the resort of Pattaya said an Iranian business contact she knew only as 'Mr Ali' had asked her to book tickets for the two men on March 1.

She had initially booked them on other airlines but those reservations expired and on March 6, Mr Ali had asked her to book them again.

She told the Financial Times she did not think Mr Ali, who paid her in cash and booked tickets with her regularly, was linked to terrorism.

The massive search is mainly in a 50-nautical mile radius from where the last contact with the plane was made, midway between Malaysia's east coast and the southern tip of Vietnam.

A U.S. led search is also taking place hundreds of miles away on the other side of the Malaysian peninsula.
