National Confab: Delegates request allowance for their aides, drivers Posted: 19 Mar 2014 10:31 AM PDT Some delegates of the newly constituted National Conference which had its first session yesterday in Abuja have asked for financial allowances to be made available to their aides who they say would help ease the burden of the task before them. Each delegate is to collect N12million as incentive for participating in the confab which is expected to last for 3 months..but that money is not enough, they also want their PAs and drivers to be paid
I see! However the secretary of the Conference, Mrs. Valeria Azinge, said there was no provision for personal aides, informing them that the Federal Government had made provision for their accommodation, transportation and sitting allowances. Continue... Meanwhile yesterday at the conference, Senator florence Ita Giwa told her fellow delegates that most of the problems facing Nigeria today was created by them. Ita-Giwa cautioned the delegates against making frivolous demands, saying that after all, a majority of the delegates at the confab contributed to the problems the nation was facing now. Ita-Giwa expressed concern at the formal sitting of the confab, maintaining that it was better for the delegates to sit down and work rather than demanding for all sorts of things which were not part of why they were there. She told her colleagues that the essence of the conference was to address the problems facing the unity of the country. "We are here to address the problems, we are responsible for most of the problems, and therefore we should sit down and do the work rather than asking government to do this or that." She said |
Alex Okosi, Toolz, 8 others make list of the 10 Most Powerful People in Media Posted: 19 Mar 2014 08:38 AM PDT The YNaija list of 10 Most Powerful People in Media under the age of 40 has just been released and yeah, I made the list. Woop, woop! These are people who have gone beyond their own careers and their own empires, and are influencing trends, leading on success, and driving people to action. From OAPs to moguls, these are the most powerful in Nigeria's media space. Check on it after the cut... Alex Okosi Okosi is the Senior Vice President and Managing Director, Viacom International Media Networks Africa. As an executive, he made his mark by bringing by bringing the urban-music themed MTV Base music channel to Africa back in 2005. It was perfect timing; African music was at the cusp of a renaissance and the presence of MTV Base on the TV screens led to an explosion of quality visuals and great video content from artists. Okosi was selected as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum and his influence in entertainment circles is undeniable. Only recently, Nigerian radio OAPs were nominated for honours at the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards and they probably have Mr Okosi to thank for it. Ayeni Adekunle Ayeni the great started his career as a journalist working for the likes of Enconium and Vanguard but has evolved to become one of the most important media men this side of the Atlantic. His Black House Media group has worked with a range of important clients from Nigerian Idol and Nigerian Breweries to superstars D'banj and Ice Prince and he publishes Nigeria's biggest entertainment website The NETng as well its weekly newspaper equivalent. In 2013, he convened the Nigerian entertainment conference that attracted the movers and shakers of the entertainment industry and business world, sparking dialogue and creating networking links. Gbemi Olateru-Olagbegi No one has a presence on radio quite like Gbemi. Sweet, sassy and slighty tart, she has been working on the radio for over eight years and has quietly built a formidable fan base and listenership that has followed her from her days at Cool FM to her present gig at Beat FM where she hosts the Drive Time Show in the evening. A graduate of Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, Gbemi has also risen through the ranks to become head of programming at Beat FM's sister station Naija FM. She is currently working on her upcoming television show. Linda Ikeji Everybody visits Linda Ikeji's all powerful blog. It's futile trying to deny, the Alexa rankings state otherwise. The blog has become the one stop shop for gossip, heart to heart dialogue, the occasional political commentary and yes, breaking news. Even the federal government is not unaware of the power of her platform, tipping her as one of the media partners for its centenary celebrations. She may do battle with a celebrity or two, but even they would agree that the publicity she offers is pretty much unparalleled. She generates millions in advertising but still manages to retain that girl next door persona. Maupe Ogun The television presenter and co-host of Channels television's must-watch breakfast magazine Sunrise daily may be the only woman in the room most of the time, but she has managed to come across as one of the smartest. And articulate. And fearless. Always compulsively watchable, with her probing and unflinching questions, many an unprepared guest have been known to shrivel under her piercing gaze. Educated at the University of Lagos and the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK, Ogun participated in president Obama's town hall meeting with young Africans. Mfonobong Nsehe Nsehe's prolific work with Forbes magazine Africa and Ventures Africa has resulted in the eventual recognition of previously under the radar Folashade Alakija as one of the richest people on the planet. As a staff writer with Forbes Africa, Nsehe's brief is to profile Africa's success stories and chronicle the lives of its rich and famous. Shunning the hype and the gloss, the Akwa Ibom-born journalist and blogger goes in to uncover the real picture. Tolu Ogunlesi Tolu is a two-time winner of the CNN/Multichoice African journalist of the Year, most recently in 2013 when he won in the Economic and Business category for his reporting on Eko Atlantic City. Ogunlesi once worked as a features editor for the defunct NEXT newspapers and his writing has appeared in various international media like The Huffington Post, CNN, UK Guardian and The Economist. He runs a weekly column on The Punch, Nigeria's most widely read newspaper. Toolz Tolu 'Toolz' Oniru may get plenty of notice for her stunning physique but she has proved there is more to her than meets the eye. Bodacious, beautiful and brainy, she has parlayed her OAP duties on Beat FM into a position of power, being able to fast track or stall careers with her choice of playlist. Her other gig on the Guaranty Trust Bank sponsored Ndani TV is about to commence its second season and the accolades pouring in for that stint thanks to the probing-yet-breezy comradarie she exudes while interviewing her guests. Those skills translate from the radio to the small screen and her performance on the debut season of the X-factor Nigeria is sure to net her next year's deal. Is there anything that Toolz cannot fix? Toyosi Ogunseye Ogunseye became one of the youngest editors of a major newspaper when she was promoted to editor of the Sunday Punch. She may be tasked with preparing the weekly but she still finds time to churn out powerful features like her three-part piece on the impact of gases released by a steel company on an upscale estate in Lagos state which won her a second CNN/Multichoice African journalist of the Year trophy, this time in the Environment category. Uche Pedro The now married founder of BellaNaija, the most popular lifestyle/entertainment website in the country has overseen the growth of BellaNaija from a single girl's blog to mentions by Oprah Winfrey, CNN and a permanent home on internet web traffic assessor Alexa's top 40 listings. Quiet, unassuming and loath to step out in public glare, Uche Pedro wields a lot of power as her site has been known to dictate the latest fashion trends, attract advertising mega bucks and corner the market on wedding photography. |

How Nigerian undergraduate was killed in Ghana over money Posted: 19 Mar 2014 08:16 AM PDT On February 19th, the body of a Nigerian student studying in Ghana was found. (Read here). Godwin Awogbo (pictured above), a 300level student of Social Sciences at the University of Cape Coast in Ghana was killed by unknown person/s and his body dumped by the roadside. Now the full story is out. According to a report by Tribune, Godwin was killed over money. Read the full story below February 20 was no doubt one of the saddest days for the family of Mr Fred Awogbo. Their son, 18-year-old Godwin Awogbo, was brutally killed. His body had been found with some his internal organs gorged out, with his hands and legs tied. Godwin Awogbo's lifeless body was reportedly found on the school campus. For days, everyone seemed to be clueless about what could have prompted such a brutal death. While the thoughts of Godwin being a cultist came to the minds of many, his friends, however, were quick to assert that Godwin was a cool-headed person with no such connection. It would be recalled that Godwin Awogbo's death made it the fourth Nigerian student to lose their life in the space of four months in Ghana. This has not only posed the question of how safe Nigerian students are in the Gold Coast, but it has also raised the question of how much university managements take an interest in the well-being of their foreign students, most of whom are teenagers. The first death case was reported in October 2013 of a 15-year-old Nigerian, by the name of Master Austine Chukwuebuka Ogukwe, an SS3 student of Ideal College, Community 5, in Tema, who was reported dead under the watch of his house master amidst mysterious circumstance. The second incident happened in November 2013, barely 26 days after the first death occurred. Two Nigerian students, Eddy and Charles of KNUSford University in Accra went for an excursion to the Volta region, under the guidance of school representative(s), but died when their canoe capsized. Meeting with the father of the victim, Mr Fred Awogbo and some of his relatives at the Nigerian High Commission, emotions flowed freely. Mr Awogbo's eyes were swollen, obviously due to prolonged crying. He expressed many regrets as regards why he had not listened to his late son's proprietor who had suggested that he should send his son to Canada to further his studies or better still, allow his son to weather the storm of strike actions often associated with Nigerian universities than losing him in Ghana to the cold hands of death, where he thought he was safe and he would not lose him to strange culture. Sharing how he got to know of his son's death: "It was my wife that actually called. She received a call from the Nigerian High Commission in Ghana that our attention was needed. When I called the embassy, I was first told an incident happened in his school and my son was missing. I asked if there was a riot, they said 'No' and promised to get back to me. "So that prompted my curiosity to find out through my contact in Ghana on what actually happened. I called the driver that I had handed over my boy to and I asked him if there was any problem in the school. He said he was not aware of any but promised to find out after sharing what I heard from the Nigerian High Commission's staff. A few minutes after, he called back to confirm that there was a problem, but he refused to say what exactly happened. Rather, he asked me to come over to Ghana. "I was still ruminating over what could have happened to my son when a doctor friend of mine from the northern part of Nigeria called and informed me that his wife told him of the news of my son's death. That was how I got to know about it. So on Monday, I left for Accra. We arrived at the Nigerian High Commission and with some of the staff of the High Commission, we went to meet the Vice Chancellor. The meeting was also witnessed by the Police and all Nigerian community leaders in Ghana." The Confession "At the meeting, the management asked some of his friends and roommate to say what they knew about his death. Meanwhile, while I was in Nigeria, I spoke with his roommate, a Ghanaian, who told me that my son had withdrawn some thousands of dollars meant for his school fees, but had lent the money to some students. When he requested them to pay back, they started threatening his life. It was after the threats that he heard about his death. "Unfortunately, after everyone of them had spoken, not even the roommate mentioned the issue of those my son lent some money and how they threatened him. So, I told the school authority and the police right there to ask him to tell them how my son was threatened. It was when he started talking that we realised he (the room mate) was the one who borrowed about $4,500 from my son, thereby denying my son the opportunity of paying his school fees on time. When my late son started worrying him, he set him up. So, after the police took my statement, they promised to arrest him." Speaking on what kind of child his son was, he said, "My son was brought up in the church. When he was still in secondary school, he was being addressed as 'Dr Pastor' because he was active in church". Appreciating the efforts of the Nigerian High Commission, Mr Awogbo said "The Nigeria High Commission in Ghana really surprised us with the amount of effort they have put into this case. They have promised to make sure the killer is brought to book." Mr Awogbo stressed his regret of sending his son to study in Ghana "Honestly, I regret sending my child to study in Ghana, because if he had gained admission into higher institution in Nigeria, this would not have happened. The reason I sent him to Ghana was to avoid the issue of strike action in Nigerian higher institutions. Even his mother and proprietor wanted him to go to Canada to further his studies. They really persuaded me but I said 'No', because I didn't want to lose my boy. "I have been traveling to Europe for more than 20 years and I know what happens in such developed countries. At a tender age, I thought if I sent him there, I might lose him; he might not even want to come back home. "So I decided that after he's through with his degree, he would go and do his Masters in Canada, but here we are." Advising parents who are yearning to send their children to Ghana to study, he said. "As for now, I cannot advise any Nigerian parent to send their children to study in Ghana; a lot of them studying here are teenagers and the stress is too much for them. Coming here myself has made me know that, in addition is the fact that the money we are paying is too much, compared to what private universities are charging in Nigeria." Source: Nigerian Tribune |

FG may remove fuel and kerosene subsidies Posted: 19 Mar 2014 06:24 AM PDT The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Dieziani Alison-Madueke yesterday gave a hint of plans by the Federal Government to remove subsidies being paid on Petrol and Kerosene products. The Minister gave the hint while speaking at the Nigerian Oil & Gas Conference which took place in Abuja While addressing the delegates, Alison-Madueke said subsidy being paid to marketers for petrol and kerosene was no longer sustainable and was only beneficial to the rich in the society. "The continued regulation of the downstream sector has its positive and negative impacts on the economy. But the negative effect is more than the positive. The subsidy policy cannot be sustained any longer. This is because the subsidy payment is not benefiting the poor it is targeting; rather, it is benefiting the rich. The industry needs to move to next level by increasing revenue and curbing oil theft and pipeline vandalism.Without belabouring the point, we are all aware that the government has to deregulate the downstream sector. Continuing regulation, we all are aware, has negative effects. It is basically unsustainable, it discourages investment, and principally, it benefits the rich, not the masses in the society that we intend to reach in the first place" The minister said.Analyst however say if petrol subsidy is removed, Nigerians would have to pay more for both products. Petrol for instance would rise to N144.66 for a litre, which is the landing cost of a refined litre as against the N97 its been sold for now at filling stations while Kerosene would go as high as N154.36 per litre, N138.87 as landing cost and N15.49 for distrubution margin, suming up to N154.36 it would be sold for |
Gay man kills wife and burns her body after marrying her to hide his sexuality Posted: 19 Mar 2014 06:04 AM PDT A bank worker who married to conceal his homosexuality strangled his wife a few months later with a metal vacuum pipe, a court heard yesterday. Jasvir Ram Ginday throttled Varkha Rani and tried to destroy her remains in an incinerator after going through with the arranged marriage to please his parents. The couple tied the knot in a lavish ceremony in India last March – even though Ginday, 30, had confided in a friend years earlier that he was attracted to men, the jury were told. Continue... The defendant had travelled to the subcontinent with his mother to find a bride and met several women before a match-maker known to both families introduced him to Miss Rani. Prosecutor Debbie Gould told a jury the couple became engaged 'at the end of a meeting which lasted several hours', with Miss Rani's family believing Ginday to be 'a perfect match for their intelligent, well-educated, and attractive young daughter'. The bride, who had completed a degree and a master's degree in science and information technology in India, moved to the UK to live with Ginday in August after being granted a visa. But just a month later, police discovered the unrecognisable remains of the 24-year-old bride in the back garden of the home they shared with other members of Ginday's family. Miss Gould said that after killing his wife, Ginday had forced her body into a 22-inch deep metal incinerator in an alley beside their home. He called police that night to report her missing – claiming she had walked out after assaulting him and had only married him for a visa to get into the UK. Miss Gould said: 'His ultimate intention was to play the role of victim, safe in the knowledge that he could rely on his married status as a permanent excuse for never having another relationship with a woman...his respectability and that of his family's would be secured.' |

Is this the missing Malaysian plane? Satellite image shows a plane above Thai jungle Posted: 19 Mar 2014 08:46 AM PDT 12 days after Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 went missing, the mystery has still not been solved. This incident is unprecedented in aviation history. The latest update now is that a Taiwanese student is claiming to have found a satellite image which appears to show the missing passenger plane in the skies above a jungle. The authenticity of the photo has not been verified, and the region depicted in the image is unknown. The image was taken from a map search website currently being used by thousands of people in an attempt to search for the plane. Malaysian authorities have yet to respond to this new claim. Some days ago, some fishermen and villagers close to the southern border of Thailand said they saw 'bright light descending at high speed' and loud noise of a plane engine on the night the plane disappeared. |

Alleged N600m fraud: How Lagos Speaker spent funds on foreign trips, wife – EFCC Posted: 18 Mar 2014 03:55 PM PDT EFCC today March 18th revealed how Lagos Speaker Adeyemi Ikuforiji, squandered money on his wife, foreign trips and how on August 1, 2011, N4.4m was paid to him as "cost of allowance"; and his personal assistant and orderly pocketed N1.2m and N1.1m respectively. Premium Times reports The trial of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, continued Tuesday with the prosecution witness detailing how the defendants allegedly laundered millions of Naira. Adebayo Adeniyi, the EFCC witness, told the court how the defendants collected N13.5 million for honorarium, N4.5 million for renovation of the Speaker's residence, and N1.5 million for the Speaker's Guest House every month for six consecutive months.Mr. Ikuforiji and Oyebode Atoyebi, his aide, are facing a 54-count amended charge of money laundering amounting to over N600 million. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, accused the Speaker and his aide of receiving the money from the Lagos State House of Assembly without passing through a financial institution. The trial was adjourned last January for the prosecution to provide a summarized version of the monies collected by Mr. Ikuforiji and his aide. But on Tuesday, Godwin Obla, counsel to the EFCC, said that he would rather continue with his previous method to avoid any grounds for appeal. It was a painstaking effort that required Mr. Obla to go through each of the transactions with the witness. The judge admitted that, but overruled the defence's plea that the prosecution tabulate the relevant sections of the transactions. "We've lost time. We vacated three days for that exercise to be done," said Ibrahim Buba, the trial judge. "What I understand the prosecution to be doing is trying to go through the records viz a viz each count of the allegation. They are entitled to do so. "It is indeed difficult, if not laborious," Mr. Buba added. 2011 TRANSACTIONS Mr. Adeniyi continued his testimony by stating how the Lagos House of Assembly paid millions of naira to Mr. Ikuforiji; his wife, Mayowa; his orderly; his personal assistant; as well as the state's Deputy Speaker. All the monies were collected by Mr. Atoyebi and paid for in cash, the witness said. On July 14, 2011, N5.4 million was paid to Mr. Ikuforiji for a trip to San Diego, California; his personal assistant and orderly collected N1.3 million and N1.2 million respectively, according to Mr. Adeniyi. On August 1, 2011, N4.4 million was paid to the Speaker as "cost of allowance"; his personal assistant and orderly pocketed N1.2 million and N1.1 million respectively. Two days later, N10 million was paid to the Speaker for Ramadan, the witness said. On August, 2011, N6.4 million was paid to Mayowa Ikuforiji, the Speaker's wife; and N1.3 million to the wife's orderly, the witness said. Between January and June 2011, N13.5 million was paid as honorarium, every month, to the Speaker, Mr. Adeniyi added. He said N4 million and N1 million were also paid monthly, within the stated period, for the renovation of the Speaker's official residence and guest house respectively. Asked why there were columns with Cheque Numbers in the cash register, Mr. Adeniyi responded that: "What they do is that a cheque is raised in most cases in the name of the Permanent Secretary and cashed from the bank. "It is this cash that is eventually paid and registered in this document, the details of payments." 2010 TRANSACTIONS "Basically, these cash payments are supposed to be made through a financial institution, paid to the beneficiaries, not through cash payments. Cash payments stall the tracing of the monies. "We discovered that some of it was paid into the account of the first accused person. Some of it was used for his credit card and other personal matters," he added. During cross examination by Wole Olanipekun, counsel to Mr. Ikuforiji, Mr. Adeniyi said that he was not aware what the Speaker used the monies for. "Our investigation is not focused on knowing whether he spent the money on his personal house. "From our investigation, we did not go in depth into who approved the disbursements, we were particular about the cash disbursement which was above the threshold of transactions by a Permanent Secretary. "Any payment must be made through e-payment, most especially when it is above the threshold," Mr. Adeniyi said. When shown one of the cash registers by the defence lawyer, Mr. Adeniyi said that he could not "remember seeing it." Mr. Obla objected to that line of questioning, insisting that the defence must tender the cash register as an exhibit before it court be used for cross examination. The judge, however, said that the defence was at liberty to use any document that had been brought before the court. "You cannot file a document and your witness said he cannot remember seeing it. If it was filed by the defence, it is a different ball game altogether," the judge told Mr. Obla. "Once you have provided this document, it is for them (the defence) to use it at their own time during the trial, not at your own time," the judge added. The trial was adjourned till April 28 for continuation of trial. |
