Actor Chidi Mokeme talks about why him and his wife live apart

Posted: 04 Mar 2014 11:51 AM PST

In an interview with Yes! magazine this week, actor Chidi Mokeme explained why his wife, Jean Chinwe Olumba, who he married in 2012, lives in the US while he lives in Nigeria....
Well, when I met my wife, this was our default setting. Let me put it like that. Our default setting was that I live in Nigeria and my wife lives in America and then we started a relationship and decided to take the relationship further and decided we were going to be man and wife. So, having taken that decision and having crossed that level, the next thing is to find a way to ease into a location. Everybody knows that you don't just pack your bag and move in one day. There are things that need to be sorted, relocation needs to be sorted. So, we are taking our time with it. But then again, by virtue of my job, I have a pretty much very flexible timing. I own my time, I decide when to work, when not to work. So, really, I can be with my wife anytime, every time I so desire and it makes it easy. If I work 9-5, then we will always have to wait for when someone was on leave the whole year round, if I want, just to be with my wife.

Dear LIB reader; Should I tell him or not?

Posted: 04 Mar 2014 08:28 AM PST

From a female LIB reader
While I was in school, I was 22 when I dated a 52 year old very rich man because I needed his money. He made sure we were as discreet as possible and I never got to know anything about him or his family, I only knew his name.
Fast-forward to seven years later, I met this gorgeous gentleman who has shown interest in taking me as his wife. Now he took me home to his mum and I discovered his late dad was my former sugar lover.
Do I tell him the truth as regards my relationship with his dad since love has no secrets or forget about it since the man is dead?

Federal Government recruits forest guards to fight Boko Haram

Posted: 04 Mar 2014 08:24 AM PST

According to Punch, the Federal Government has resorted to recruiting forest guards to assist the Joint Task Force in combating Boko Haram insurgents in the northern part of the country.
Most of the insurgents are believed to be using routes cutting through forests in states like Borno, Yobe, Taraba and Adamawa to smuggle arms into the country from Cameroon and other neighbouring countries.
The Conservator General of National Park Service, Mr. Haruna Abubakar, told the House of Representatives Committee on Environment on Monday that the guards would help the JTF to comb the forests for hideouts of insurgents.
Abubakar had appeared before the committee in Abuja to defend the 2014 budget of the agency.
The NPS had been classified as a para-military agency in January this year by the government.
According to Abubakar, the agency will rely on its knowledge of the country's forest terrain to conduct sweeps with the military.

He informed the committee that the agency controlled seven national parks in the country, covering about 24,000- square kilometres of land.

Abubakar said, "The National Park Service has been playing a crucial role in intelligence gathering for the country's military in the North-East and the forest bordering Chad and Cameroon."
The committee, which is chaired by Mrs. Uche Ekwunife, stated that insurgents operated camps in forests like Sambisa, Mafa, Wulgo and Kirenowa, all in Borno State.

Sambisa forest camp which was said to have been first discovered during a military raid in 2013, covers an area of about 300-square kilometres.

The chairman of the committee expressed concern that besides the loss of human lives and property, Nigeria was losing revenue from tourism due to the activities of insurgents.

Oscar Pistorius breaks down in court in day two of his trial

Posted: 04 Mar 2014 07:47 AM PST

Oscar Pistorius broke down in court today as his defense lawyer argued that Reeva Steenkamp was so badly brain damaged by the gunshot to her head she couldn't possibly have screamed.

Advocate Barry Roux made the claims in response to a neighbour's testimony that she heard a woman's screams after shots were fired on the night the model was killed.

He told the court: 'We will have experts state that there was serious brain damage after the shot to the head, that it would not have been possible for her to scream at all. With the head shot, she would have dropped down immediately.' Continue...

The Paralympian was seen bent double in the dock, with his hands behind his head, as the court heard details of the bullets hitting Miss Steenkamp and the removal of fragments from her head during the post mortem.

A relative handed him a handkerchief which he used to wipe tears from his eyes.

Prosecution lawyer Gerrie Nel interjected to say it was the last of four shots that struck Steenkamp's head, the first two hitting her right side, the wall and her shoulder.

Mr Roux's comments came during fierce cross-examination of one of the state's key witnesses, Michell Burger, a university lecturer who lives near the athlete's Pretoria home.
Ms Burger replied: 'As I said yesterday, I heard her voice just after the last shot. It could have been that it was at the last shot was fired.'

Her account was backed up by her husband, Charl Johnson, who said he also heard a woman's screams before and after gunshots.
He said: 'We were under the impression someone had been attacked in their house in a very secure complex.
'I remember during the succession of shots I heard a lady scream again and shortly after the last shot.'

The sprinter's defence had earlier come under further attack by another neighbour, Estelle van der Merwe, who lives less than 100 metres away, told the court she heard arguing coming from Pistorius's home that night.
'I woke up the morning at 1.56am to sounds of someone talking loudly and fighting,' she told the court. 'It lasted about an hour.'

In an emotive second day of the murder trial, Ms Burger wept in the witness stand as she told how she was still haunted by the screams she heard that night.
'When I'm in the shower, I relive her shouts. The terrifying screams,' she told the North Gauteng High Court.

Ms Burger, who faced a second day of questioning, has testified to a sequence of events on the night of February 14 last year which contradicts the athlete's story.

She told yesterday that she heard 'blood-curdling' screams from a woman before, during and after shots rang out in the early hours of Valentine's Day last year.

The sequence of events, if accurate, would undermine the Paralympic gold medallist's claim that he shot Steenkamp after mistaking her for an intruder.

Is there anything wrong with a woman not wanting to change to her husband's name?

Posted: 04 Mar 2014 04:28 AM PST

So because prolific writer Chimamanda Adichie asked to be addressed as a Ms and not a Mrs, some people are assuming she's separated from her US-based husband, Dr. Ivara Esega?

In an interview with Sun Newspaper on Saturday March 1, Ms Adichie told the interviewer who addressed her as Mrs Chimamanda Adichie, to simply call her Chimamanda Adichie.
"Before we start (the interview), please, I just want to say that my name is Chimamanda Adichie. That's how I want it; that's how I'm addressed, and it is not Mrs but Miss. Ms: that's how I want it. I am saying this, because I just got a mail from my manager this morning. It seems that there are people who attended the church service, and they wrote about it, addressing me as Mrs. Chimamanda (Esega). I didn't like that at all. So my name is Chimamanda Adichie, full stop!"
Is there anything wrong with what Ms Adichie said? If you go back to history, African women didn't bear their husbands name until the advent of colonization. They bear their parents name. And it's especially difficult if you have already made a name for yourself with your maiden name. Thoughts?

Kissing 'straight' men. Is it a big deal?

Posted: 04 Mar 2014 03:59 AM PST

Is there anything wrong with two seemingly straight men kissing on the lips? Photo on the left shows Diddy and Rick Ross in an embrace, like they were getting ready to kiss each other. Rapper 50 cent posted the pic on his instagram page suggesting the rap heavyweights are gay. When fans blasted him for posting it and suggesting something like that, he quickly deleted the pic.

Photo on the right shows '12 Years a Slave' director Steve McQueen and star of the movie Michael Fassbender kissing on the lips after winning Best Film at Sunday's Oscars award. The men are known to be straight men with women in their lives (Steve has two kids with long-time girlfriend, Bianca Stigter. Michael has a girlfriend) but it didn't stop people from insinuating they are gay because 'no straight man kisses another man on the lips'.

I personally would not be comfortable with some girl kissing me on the lips, but for someone who is comfortable with it, is it a big deal? Can't two straight men kiss each other? Pls share your thoughts..

Nigerian student jailed in the UK for cheating 6 women out of £186k

Posted: 04 Mar 2014 03:47 AM PST

Covenant University graduate Stephen Emmanuel Jack, who now studies in the UK, has been jailed for 3 years for seducing six women on dating websites and cheating them out of £186,000, according to a report by UK Mirror. Find the report below...
A lonely hearts conman was jailed for three years after cheating six women out of £186,000 through dating websites. Police believe student Emmanuel Jack, 26, claimed to be an architect, engineer and gem broker, while talking them into handing over the money.
Using aliases including John Creed, John Windsor and Johnnie Carlo Rissi, the cash was said to be needed for vbusiness purposes.
The love rat, who was studying for a business degree at the University of Salford, admitted 11 counts of money laundering totalling £186,000 and possession of articles for use in fraud at Manchester Crown Court.
Two of the women who were conned are British.

Detective Constable Stuart Donohue said: "While we strongly suspect - but cannot prove - that Jack was the person who was communicating with these women, what we can prove is that money totalling close to £277,000 has been transferred through his bank accounts
"Woman from across the globe were targeted and exploited. Women, who in most cases were vulnerable and lonely.
"Some took out loans, others lost life savings, they believed they were speaking with a man who had genuine feelings for them, a man who loved them and wanted to be with them and who they genuinely believed to be a soul mate."

The first victim met a man who claimed to be John Creed - a self-employed architect and building contractor on a dating website in August 2011 when she was aged 61.

The pair exchanged e-mails over several days before Creed began expressing his love.
He then claimed to have two contracts: one for log homes in Shropshire and the other for the renovation of flats in Sweden and sent her his contract allegedly worth £950,000.
He told her his feelings were "too strong to ignore" before asking for £1,500 to help pay for supplies for his project. She agreed to transfer some funds to the account.

At the same time another woman who was aged 52 at the time and who was vulnerable, began chatting with a man over the same website.
The man claimed to be living in Spain and working as an architect and building contractor.
After a couple of weeks he again asked for £1,500 to repair damaged machinery and cash to pay tax bills and money to pay his workers.
The woman took out a loan and paid the money to accounts that resulted in the money being transferred to Jack's account.

Following the reports from the two women, an investigation was launched by fraud officers from Greater Manchester Police.
Officers linked up with with Kentucky state police who took a statement from a woman, who died in August 2013. She said she met a man with the profile name John Windsor through another dating site around January 2012.

Windsor told her he was an engineer who had been awarded a contract to redevelop Wick Airport runway in Scotland. The funds were sent to bank accounts by money transfers and in the form of Rolex watches through the post.

Officers also liaised with Delta police in relation to a victim from Ohio.
She met a man who called himself John or Johnnie Carlo Rissi who was from America but had moved to England to set up as a gem broker he requested money to help with a tax issue and for assistance with payroll, along with various other excuses. Nine transfers totalling £18,924 were sent.
A Proceeds of Crime Act hearing is scheduled to take place on May 16.

MTN and CCHub power Mobile Application Experience Centre

Posted: 04 Mar 2014 01:55 AM PST

Co Creation Hub, CCHub, is a social innovation centre dedicated to accelerating the application of social capital and technology for economic prosperity. Following the success of the 2013 MTN App Developer Challenge, CCHub has partnered with MTN to launch the first-of-its-kind Mobile Experience Lab, MxLab based on the need to bridge the gap between users and digital service providers in Nigeria. Continue...

Over the past two years, CcHub has worked with aspiring tech entrepreneurs who are finding interesting ways to address social issues in Nigeria in areas such as governance, education, trade, water, extractives and entertainment. It has become clear that once these tools are created, the next critical step towards scalability is to connect with end users. The aim of MX Lab is to help enhance the quality of local digital solutions; improve customer satisfaction; and accelerate smart application of technology.

On its raison d'être, Bosun Tijani, Managing Partner CChub has this to say:

"The Mobile Apps Experience Lab, MxLab is really about bringing the end users with the app developers or content creators. We have discovered that app developers don't necessarily understand how their users want to experience what they want to provide for them.

Its one thing that you are building an app that people want use, but the question is how they want to use them. This project essentially provides a platform for engagement with the target audience in the process of building that solution across all the stages of development – before you start, when you have an alpha version, and or a beta version, you are continuously collecting feedback even after you have launched in the market.

This is something that we believe is currently missing in Nigeria and if our mobile applications are going to go viral, we need to consider users and that's what the MxLab is setup to achieve.

MTN is the platinum sponsor for this project and have enabled it to happen for which we are forever grateful."

You can visit the MxLab - 294, Herbert Macaulay Road, Sabo, Yaba. Lagos State. Nigeria. mxlab@cchubnigeria.com
