Kenya female lawmakers stage walkout as polygamy law is passed Posted: 21 Mar 2014 09:11 AM PDT It was a sitting filled with drama today in Kenya's parliament as female members of the assembly staged a walkout during proceedings in the parliament. Their grievance was as a result of a new law their male counterparts all favored which they see as derogatory to the rights of Kenyan women. Prior to today when the Kenyan Marriage Amended Bill was passed into law, it was customary in Kenya for men to seek the permission of their first wife before bringing in another woman as second wife or even marry as many as they want. The men obviously woke up from their slumber and decided to remove that clause in their constitution and this infuriated the women big time. Continue.. Mohammed Junet, an MP representing a constituency from the western Nyanza province, "When you marry an African woman, she must know the second one is on the way and a third wife… this is Africa," Kenya's Capital News website quotes him as saying. MPs Aden Duale, Jakoyo Midiwo and Junet Mohammed said it was against tradition to seek consent to marry a second wife and claimed their female colleagues had an ulterior motive in trying to push for the clause. "I want my Christian brothers to read the Old Testament, King David and King Solomon never consulted anybody to marry a second wife," said Duale. The women would have none of those talk as they believe it is a sign of respect for a man to discuss with his wife his intention to marry a second wife. MP Soipan Tuya says"It behoves you to be man enough to agree that your wife and family should know". Despite their walkout, the bill was still passed into law as the men outnumbered the women in the parliament when voting was required. The law on a brighter side enables Kenyan women to have 30%of any property the couple acquires during marriage and she can go with it even after divorce. The bill amongst other things also bans marriages of anyone below 18, and does not recognize live-in-lovers known as "come-make-we-stay" in Kenya. |

Wait a minute, did Jim Iyke propose to Nadia just for the cameras? Posted: 21 Mar 2014 07:50 AM PDT On yesterday's episode of Jim Iyke's reality show, Jim Iyke Unscripted, the actor proposed marriage to his girlfriend, actress Nadia Buari. He later said the ring he presented to her was a 6-carat diamond ring he designed himself and made in different countries. After the episode aired and the news broke, fans congratulated Nadia on her new status as Jim Iyke's fiancee, but her tweets a few hours ago suggests there's more going on. Remember when Jim's other girlfriend, Jamaican Kentura Hamilton said she was used on Jim's reality show and she wasn't really how she was portrayed and a lot of things they did in the show together was staged? Well, Nadia is singing a similar tune...or maybe I'm just reading too much meaning into what she wrote...check on her tweets after the cut and tell us what you think... |
Rev. Chris Okotie writes on the NIS employment test tragedy Posted: 21 Mar 2014 07:39 AM PDT See the rest of what he wrote after the cut... This tragedy mirrors the desperate situation of Nigeria. One only hopes that this unfortunate loss of lives, coupled with the incessant Boko Haram killings and other youth-based violence, would serve as a wake-up call to the summiteers, that this country needs a new governance paradigm. If the conference cannot produce that, then the over N7 billion invested in it would amount to another colossal waste of our scarce national resources. It is an irony that each delegate would earn a whopping N12 million for the 3-month duration of the conference. By conservative estimates, N12 million is enough to provide self-employment for 12 resourceful graduates, and N7 billion could do likewise for thousands, some of whom perished under chaotic conditions in stadia around the country, while waiting for a poorly organised aptitude test by the NIS. The young graduate job-seekers who turned out for the tests filled up many stadia around the country, as if they came to watch high-profile football matches. These hapless chaps paid N1,000.00 (One Thousand Naira) processing fee each. So, the Nigerian Immigration Service must have made quite some money, considering that in Lagos and Abuja alone, over 125,000 applicants turned up. We may be looking at millions of Naira that this monetised recruitment exercise generated for the NIS. There was record turnout in each of the 34 states for just 45,000 slots that the NIS advertised. The alarming job application horror is a clear evidence of the inability of our public institutions to manage events, resulting in poor crowd control and avoidable deaths through stampede. This is not an isolated case, it is a regular occurrence. When things go wrong, our leaders seldom take responsibility. The NIS has tried to duck charges of culpability, by claiming that it outsourced the recruitment exercise to a private firm which actually collected the N1,000.00 levy. As usual, a panel would be setup to investigate this incident, followed by a white paper, and then, the report may end up gathering dust in a cabinet somewhere in Abuja, while government officials focus on the more important 2015 general elections in a country where competition for political power is about resource control, not the promotion of the general good of the people. The fact that four expectant mothers died in this incident, with about 700 others reportedly injured, is enough reason why those who organised this event should not escape appropriate sanctions. Unfortunately, the Jonathan Administration is not known to punish errant public officials, although the NIS boss and the Internal Affairs Minister have been queried. In other countries where human life is valued, the President should compensate the victims and, more importantly, prevent a future re-occurrence. But the Federal Government has other priorities. For me, and also for the FRESH Democratic Party, which I lead, nothing else matters in our quest for a functional, self-accounting and representative democracy, than a fundamental change of the prevailing order which is responsible for our national predicament. It should be reasonably assumed that delegates to the conference would know this, but I have my fears. Many commentators have observed that the composition of the delegates to this National Conference is skewed in favour of the old politicians, and some of those who ran this country aground. How can we expect any meaningful change from this set of people? 20th century ideas cannot solve 21st century problems. If you look critically, the composition of the participants in this conference reflects the geriatric propensity of our polity. All the progressive nations of the world, especially those who have graduated from under-development to emerging markets, are being governed today by new sets of leaders, whose orientation reflects the new world order, and are thus able to successfully confront the challenges they encounter in their respective nations. As this NIS recruitment tragedy shows, our meal ticket educational system is not designed to drive industrial development or produce resourceful, self-employed folks who can create opportunities, rather depend on employment. The belated introduction of entrepreneur studies in the newly remoulded college curricula is like putting the cart before the horse. While vocational studies have been introduced, there are no teachers to instruct carpenters, electricians etc. I have long been advocating a shift in the paradigm of our educational sector, which should be anchored on Human Capital Development. Science subjects are foundation of technology. If I were the President, this would be the mantra that would drive my reform agenda because without a solid, qualitative, continuous stream of local production of graduates in the technical, or science-related courses, our dream of industrial revolution as recently articulated in a widely publicized launch by Mr. President, would be a mirage. The secret of Asia industrial miracle is that, leaders of that continent sent their students to Europe and America. The returning Asian students, who went to learn the technological wizardry of the West, laid the foundation of the technological revolution that produced the Tigers, who now threaten the scientific dominance of Europe and America. This is a model we could learn from. Rev. Chris Okotie, a Pastor-politician wrote from Lagos |
B’Haram writes Army, threatens to attack Maiduguri barracks Posted: 21 Mar 2014 07:15 AM PDT The members of the Boko Haram Sect have written to the 7th Division of the Nigerian Army threatening to attack Maimalari Barracks on Friday (today), Punch reports. Read full report below...
A source said that the insurgents might have compelled one of the drivers to get the letter to the military of their plan to attack the barracks. The source said that the letter was written in Hausa Language. "Yesterday, the Boko Haram sect wrote that they would attack the Maimalari Barracks. They wrote the letter in Hausa Language to give the notification of their coming. "However, security operatives are praying for them to come to the barracks. The barracks is the biggest; it is the cantonment in Maiduguri. "The barracks accommodates, the 7th Infantry Division, the Artillery, Ordinance, Engineering, Signal and other corps. "People are even surprised how they got the letter to the barracks; one cannot rule out intimidation of one of the drivers to get the letter to the barracks. "Soldiers are on the red alert. There are many soldiers there who are waiting for the attack. Soldiers are battle ready," the source said. The current threat is coming barely after the Boko Haram sect launched an attack on Giwa Barracks, the Headquarters of the 21 Artillery Brigade on March 15, 2014. Authoritative military sources said that over 350 insurgents were killed in that attack while some soldiers were injured. A soldier was also said to have lost four children to the attack. Our correspondent also gathered that the Special Forces had taken over the Gwoza Hills believed to be one of the strongest hideouts of the sect in the North-East. Investigations revealed that the Special Forces stormed the Gwoza Hills and killed several insurgents in a combined operation with the men of the Nigerian Air Force on Wednesday. The source said that a soldier was killed in the attack while some others were injured. "There was an encounter in Gwoza Hills. Troops have taken over the place; it was another fierce encounter. "A soldier was killed and some others were wounded. On the part of the insurgents, I can't give you the exact casualty figure because the Air Force was involved and bombs were used. "Gwoza Hills is one of their strong points. The Boko Haram took over the entire place before the battle but soldiers have taken over the place and have captured some of their arms and ammunition. "That place is one of their main operational bases; corpses are smelling there. It is a joint operation involving the Air Force and others. "The insurgents hide under the hills to launch attacks. It takes over three hours to climb to the top of the hills in some cases. The hills are massive," the source said. Source: Punch |

Doctors perform surgery to save Nigerian woman with ‘intestines hanging out’ of body Posted: 21 Mar 2014 11:20 AM PDT A Nigerian woman suffering from a life-threatening condition has been treated at a hospital in Ras Al Khaimah in UAE after allegedly being refused surgery in Nigeria, 7daysindubai reports... Victoria Odita was rushed to RAK Hospital in critical condition as a result of an incisional hernia in her abdomen, which caused her intestines to hang out of her body. It's thought the hernia developed following Odita's four caesarian sections, which left her abdominal wall very weak and eventually allowed her intestines to push through. Doctors at RAK Hospital performed complicated surgery that saved her life. The 37-year-old had suffered from abdominal swelling for years before realising she had a large hernia in her abdomen. When the swelling increased following her fourth pregnancy six months ago, she sought medical help, but was denied treatment in Nigeria because of the extreme severity of her condition. "She was rejected treatment in her own country and had been suffering with immense pain for the past six months," said Dr Parvez Ahmad, a specialist surgeon at RAK Hospital who operated on Odita. "She was a high-risk case and a challenge for any surgical team. An immediate operation was performed to repair the incisional hernia and alleviate the symptoms." Parvez explained the condition is quite common after multiple abdominal surgeries. However, he said Odita's situation was made worse because her heart pumping capacity was only 25 per cent, which in normal person should be more than 60 per cent. "A person who gains significant weight after abdominal surgery, becomes pregnant or lifts heavy objects is most at risk for an incisional hernia," said Dr Anup Panigrahi, head of the minimal invasive surgery department at RAK Hospital. "The incision is weakest, and most prone to a hernia, while it is still healing. "It is not only a female problem; both the sexes should be aware that anybody who has had one or many abdominal surgeries is at risk of developing an incisional hernia." |
Reps Probe petroleum minister for N10billion private jet expenses Posted: 21 Mar 2014 06:40 AM PDT The House of Representatives yesterday passed a resolution to probe the expenditures of the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Alison-Maduekwe, on a private jet she allegedly charters for private use and maintains with public funds. According to the sponsor of the bill, Hon Samuel Adejare who represents Lagos State, the minister maintains the jet with 500,000euros or N130 million monthly"Thus, in the last two years, the minister has committed at least N3.120bn to maintaining the private jet, which is used solely for her personal needs and those of her immediate family, which is an appalling act"he said. He said the frequent use of the Jet by the Minister and her family members has caused an estimated N10billion to be spent on it for maintenance, fuel, payment of crew members, hanger rentage and others. |

Government should stop giving actors money - John Okafor Posted: 21 Mar 2014 12:57 AM PDT Popular actor, John Okafor, in a recent chat with Punch, criticised the recent visit of the Actors' Guild of Nigeria to President Jonathan. Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, said he had beef with those who went to visit the president because the president is yet to set his priorities right with regard to Nollywood.
Okafor also talked about homosexuality in the Nollywood industry...
He talks about fans not taking him seriously because of the 'unserious roles' he plays in the movies.
He recalls when he knew he would be an actor.
Okafor says acting has not made him rich "Acting has not made me rich, but I'm very comfortable. I am able to feed and adequately take care of my family; neither do I borrow money.

Posted: 21 Mar 2014 12:35 AM PDT This report is most likely not true...but it's an interesting read. Culled from MediaTakeOut! Enjoy... MediaTakeOut.com reported yesterday that the day after Rihanna left Drake (the pair spent the week together), Rih was getting her back blown out on the dancefloor by some West Indian dude. Well MediaTakeOut.com can officially report...the two of them are broken up! This ain't rumor either y'all . . . it's fact. And yes, we came prepared to show receipts!! We spoke with a person close to Drake's OVO crew, who told us that Drake kicked Rihanna off his tour...because she was acting up. According to our snitch, after spending the week with Rihanna, Drake hit it repeatedly...and quit it!According to our REAL RELIABLE INSIDER, Drake's OVO crew was NOT FEELING RIHANNA at all - they felt she was TOO BOSSY AND CONDESCENDING ESPECIALLY TOWARDS DRAKE'S CREW - so they kept pressuring Drake to cut her loose. Eventually it worked, because we're told that RIHANNA WANTED TO STAY ON TOUR with Drake . . . but Drake was like NAH . . . it's time for you to GO HOME. And one day after he CUT RIHANNA LOOSE, Drake flew his REAL GIRL, WINTA'NNA to be with him in Ireland. MediaTakeOut.com received word from a DIFFERENT VERY reliable source that Drake has been dating a LOVELY young British Ethiopian girl named WINTA'NNA for about two years now. They're kind of ON AND OFF, but more ON than off. She's the girl that Drake rapped about in Poetic Justice, the East African girl with the big azz in the sun dress. After Rihanna got PUT OUT . . . Drake flew in his REAL GIRL, whom Drake's crew LOVES!! And so now for the receipts. We have THREE pics from WINTA'NNA Instagram page. Well First off look at the below pics, you'll see that she's wearing the SAME ST PATRICK'S DAY SHIRT as Drake. And in the second pic, she's bragging about being flown on a private jet to Ireland (Drake had a concert in Ireland that day). And third, most CONVINCING RECEIPT . . . is the pic of him wearing the same shoes that he wore onstage in her car. |
