Aluu 4: Mob overwhelmed police team - Accused

Posted: 10 Apr 2014 01:40 PM PDT

A former police sergeant facing murder charge over the killing of four University of Port Harcourt students told a High Court that the mob overwhelmed a police team sent to rescue the students. The accused, Lucky Orji, was charged along with 11 other persons in connection with the killing in Aluu Village in October 2012. Some other suspects are still at large.
Orji told the court today Thursday April 10th that the police patrol team, of which he was a member, could not rescue the students because it was overwhelmed by the mob numbering about 3,000.

Mr. Orji, the 2nd accused person, added that the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, in charge of the area had ordered the team to pull out of the scene of the incident. Continue...

Led in evidence by his counsel, Uchechukwu Oputa, Mr. Orji said that the DPO's order came on the heels of a distress call by the team's commander to the DPO.
According to Mr. Orji, the commander had told the DPO that "the team was facing mob of over 3000."

Apparently contradicting himself, Mr. Orji also said that the police had rescued the students and took them to the police patrol vehicle, but did not tell the court what happened thereafter.
The prosecution had alleged that the accused person took part in the murder of the four students instead of protecting them in line with his constitutional duty.

The prosecution, led by Rufus Godwins, the Rivers Solicitor-General, said that Mr. Orji had used the butt of his AK47 assault rifle to hit one of the victims.

Mr. Godwins had made an oral application to the court for the video footage of the scene of the crime to be played to prove his point.

The video footage was played and Mr. Orji was captured in the footage hitting one of the victims with the butt of his AK47 rifle, but he denied that he was the very policeman in the footage.

Mr. Orji said he made two statements to the police on October 8, 2012, and October 14, 2012; but claimed that he made that of October 14, 2012, under duress.

According to him, an inspector had slapped him, while forcing him to sign a statement he alleged was written by Raphael Ezechi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP, and prosecution witness (PW1)
He also claimed that the police team was attacked by the mob, but on cross examination by the prosecution, he denied that the mob attacked the police.

The prosecution said it had proved that the two statements made by Mr. Orji were made voluntarily and urged the court to admit them in evidence and mark them as exhibits.

The trial judge, Ledan Nyordee, adjourned the matter to May 5 and May 22, 2014, for ruling in the trial within trial and continuation of the case.

Former world 100m record holder Asafa Powell has been banned for 18 months for doping offences. The 32 year old athlete was banned by the Jamaican Anti-doping disciplinary commission for testing positive for banned substance oxilofrine before running at the 2013 National Championship.

A disciplinary panel of the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission announced today Thursday April 10th that the Powell will be excluded from competition until December 2014, with the ban backdated to the time of his original sample collection in June 2013.

He's permitted to return to competitions on Dec. 20 2014. He has since said he plans to appeal against the 'unjust' ban. Powell won gold medal in 2008 after he completed the 100m dash in 9.79secs. He was out-shined the following year by Usain Bolt.

Awww, see the look of love...Rihanna & Drake turn up the heat!

Posted: 10 Apr 2014 09:51 AM PDT

Rihanna & boyfriend Drake pictured staring at each other with love then sharing a hug at the Staples Center after watching the Los Angeles Clippers take on the Oklahoma City Thunder last night.

Meanwhile, the lovebirds showed up for Rihanna's bff Melissa Forde's birthday party and sources claim they couldn't keep their hands off each other. See the report after the cut...

From Hollywood Life

Our eyewitness tells us that: "They were all over each other! Others saw them kissing. They were super close.
Drake arrived alone, Rihanna with Mellisa ford, but they were together in the club. They left separately. Rihanna looked very very happy … her eyes were sparkling … happiest I've seen her in a while."
Rihanna knows that club inside and out and she took Drake away for about 10 minutes or so and they had some one-on-one time. Nobody was with them but their security so you know what that means! Drake had a big smile on his face when they came out AND he had her lipstick on his lips and cheek. He wiped it off though once Ri and Mel made fun of him. He was cool about it though. No harm done whatsoever.

Dear LIB readers: Should I collect transport fare from my in-law?

Posted: 10 Apr 2014 09:00 AM PDT

From a male LIB reader. I laughed!
I am an avid reader of your blog and I need advice from LIB house on this issue. I work with a prestigious bank and am OK. I have been dating a girl since January and we are really serious. I have introduced her to my parents and I know hers too, most especially her mom ad sister. Last weekend she took me to her brother's house for introduction, when leaving, her brother gave me transport fare in an envelope which I politely rejected (don't know how much was in the envelop sha). The brother took no harm with the expression on his face. For 3 days after the visit my babe condemned me for not collecting the cash from her brother though it's been settled. But next weekend we are visiting another brother's house, if I am given transport fare again, should I collect?

'I’m a victim of blackmail' Laide Bakare’s hubby drags EFCC to court

Posted: 10 Apr 2014 08:43 AM PDT

Press statement from actress Laide Bakare's husband, Mutairu Oriowo
Alhaji Mutairu Babatunde Oriowo, husband of Nollywood actress, Laide Bakare, has debunked the fraud and theft story against him occasioned through a declaration by the EFCC and published recently in a national daily. The businessman, who is the CEO of Primavera Construction & Engineering Ltd, added that, contrary to EFCC's statement declaring him wanted, he is not on the run because he has not committed any offence to warrant running away from his fatherland.
The businessman said that he was miffed by the EFCC declaration because he could not understand what the interest of EFCC was, as no court of law has indicted him for any offence and no warrant of arrest has ever been issued on him.
Nollywood actress, Laide Bakare, has also said that she is standing by her husband on the matter, believing that the EFCC publication was meant to destroy his hard-earned reputation as a philanthropist who derives joy in helping people, adding that the story was also a calculated attempt to smear her own name as a celebrity.
According to Mr. Orilowo, the EFCC and MTN were only out to blackmail him because the court case he instituted against EFCC, seeking an injunction to restrain the agency from arresting him or declaring him wanted, will be determine on the 28th of April 2014. Yet he was declared wanted on no basis many weeks before the hearing date.
Explaining the issue further, Mr. Orilowo said that "there was this MTN Cooperative whose membership is of MTN workers. Their union came together with this idea of a project called 'Y'ello Estate' to be built at Okun Ajah. That is my home town and where I do most of my businesses. So, based on my popularity and as a philanthropist who commands respect in the area, my company, Primavera Engineering & Construction Limited, was approached by MTN to help buy five hectares of land, which we did. Later, they came to us again and said oh, there are more demands, get us five hectares more. We did. The subscribers now became much interested in the project because they were going to make it the best of such Estates in Lagos".
"We had an agreement from the beginning because they trusted us to deliver. The agreement was for me to; one, buy the lands; two, to ensure that the lands acquired were validly documented, and three, to be the sole developer of the Estate".
"But some powerful people at MTN then came in after the agreement with the aim to hijack it. They saw the project as a laudable one and they were shocked that I was the only man handling the project. They came with an excuse that many people were bidding for it and it should not be a one-man thing. But I have spent close to one billion naira on this project. The agreement was for me to collect from MTN 20 percent of the money for mobilization and then go ahead to complete it with my personal money. And I have spent a lot on it. You know how big a project like an Estate can be; talk of roads, bridges and other amenities".
"So, since the MTN had decided to bring in another developer and my company has committed so much into executing the project, I asked that the money I have spent so far be refunded. But when they were not forthcoming, I took the MTN Cooperative to court seeking to retrieve my money. We got judgment from Hon. Justice Olateru-Olagbegi. We then had negotiations with MTN based on the court judgment. Under the terms of settlement, MTN was to pay us substantial sums of money".
"But MTN still refused to pay us, so we commenced third-party involvement proceedings against MTN which resulted in the issuance of an order freezing the bank accounts of MTN. While we await action on our money, MTN went to EFCC to lodge criminal complaints against us, alleging theft of money without disclosing the court proceedings on the issue. This was after the EFCC, on its own, had gone to court to institute criminal proceedings against us based on MTN's complaints, which is still pending before the court".

Photo: Woman caught stealing baby through window in Ogun state

Posted: 10 Apr 2014 06:53 AM PDT

31year old Blessing Aransiola (pictured) was caught in the early hours of this morning April 10th allegedly trying to steal a 1 year old girl, Oreoluwa Adanri, from her parents home at Ademola Coker Street, Alagbole, Ogun State, PM News reports.

Narrating what happened, Oreoluwa's mother, Mrs Adanri said Blessing gained entrance into their home around 4am by tearing their window net as they slept. She said she was woken up by the cry of her daughter in the hands of the suspect.
"She picked up the baby as she was sleeping on the bed by the window and stole N5,000 kept in a purse. She was trying to run away when my husband ran after her and caught her. I raised an alarm to draw neighbours' attention to the incident and everybody came out to assist us," Mrs. Adanri narrated.
Blessing was arrested and immediately taken to the Ajuwon station where she is being held for kidnapping. Continue...

In her statement, Blessing said she was homeless and was looking for a place to sleep when she found the passage of the Adanri's
"I was looking for a place to sleep when I saw the verandah. I was trying to sit down when the net got torn. I was wandering about, I didn't steal any baby or money. Last year November I sustained injury on my leg and I couldn't walk properly again. Later, I developed problems in my eyes and I couldn't see properly again. Since then I have been moving about,"
"I am not a thief. They accused me of kidnapping but I am not a kidnapper, I was just wandering about because I have nowhere to sleep. I did not kidnap any child," she stated.
Blessing says this is not the first time she has been wrongly labeled a thief, as she was thrown out from her former abode at no 5, Modupeola Street, Iju-Ishaga, by her landlord after her co-tenants labeled her a thief.
