Charles Novia weighs in on Tchidi & Sophia's saga, as Tchidi deletes all his tweets

Posted: 03 Apr 2014 07:58 AM PDT

Tchidi Chikere has deleted all the tweets he posted yesterday slamming his estranged wife, Sophia Tchidi Chikere. Meanwhile, Nollywood producer Charles Novia has weighed in on the marital strife, writing about it on his blog in an article titled, Tchidi, Talk Not. See what Charles wrote after the cut.

Tchidi, Talk Not - Charles Novia...

One of the best brains we have in Nollywood would be Tchidi Chikere, a celebrated scriptwriter and movie director. With an impressive body of work in the past decade and a capacity to discover new stars or to enhance sagging careers of others, Tchidi is not a personality one can ignore in Nollywood.
I have known him in a professional capacity for close to fourteen years and I relate well with him in the few instances we have met and had discussions. Tchidi has a burning desire to make a change in Nollywood, to shoot movies which somehow should re-calibrate society's moral journey. I particularly love some of his movies for the uncanny way he brings out everyday characters in simple lifestyles and turn them to complex evolutionary beings in complex situations. As a movie director and a scriptwriter, Tchidi is gifted. Very gifted. Take it from me.

In my usual no-holds-barred critique of his acting, I would be less charitable in my accolades. But I am not writing this to detract from his credentials as a celebrated auteur. I am writing this out of concern, perhaps more professional but with a huge personal slant to it as well.

It is a well-known fact by now that Tchidi got married to an actress, Nuella, a few days ago. First of all, Tchidi, I must congratulate you on that. Whatever the opinions people have, we must all respect the wishes of consenting adults when it comes to tying the knot. He made a choice and we should respect that, no matter how much the slanderous anonymous commentators on social media think they know.

That Tchidi got seperated from his former wife, Sophia who bore him three children is perhaps unfortunate but like I said, consenting adults take decisions which they believe is best for them at certain stages in life. Such decisions might come much anger and recriminations and would always leave scars in the hearts of both parties. Divorce or seperation are never pleasant.

My concern in this case has to do with the open fights between Tchidi and Sophia on social media AFTER Tchidi's new marriage. On face value, it would seem to have started with Tchidi's rant on twitter a couple of days back against his ex-wife.

The tweets were quite shocking and less than charitable, to say the least. Though from the tweets, one could psycho-analyse that Tchidi was really angry, hurt and perhaps deliberately hitting below the belt at his former wife. My first reaction when I read those tweets on a blog was one of shock. Those tweets were totally uncalled for. Totally. Granted, they might have been written in a miasma of negative volcanic emotions but total restrainst is required from a man in those kind of circumstances. And such restrainst is justified when the mother of your blood children is involved!
Sophia had a riposte which I read as well and she had a moral right to respond too. But something tells me that Tchidi would wish to fire another salvo at that response and thus start a social media bric-a-brac which would inflict more wounds on all parties. That is why I had to write this open opinion.

In Nollywood, and perhaps to a small extent the entertainment industry in general, most of the creatives tend to look away when acrimonious matters befall one of their own. First reactions would be one of aloofness, followed by private gossip in meeting places. Sometimes, colleagues and friends of such personalities would whisper malicious things about the subject in private while pretending to be all coy and concerned when they meet the suffering subjects in public. Oh Yes! My sector have some psychophants and pretenders as with politics but isn't that how life goes?

Perhaps Tchidi and Sophia are being wrongly advised by masquerading friends? Or maybe they are not even being advised at all by anyone but are just ventilating on social media, giving bloggers more hits and the country one more piece of idle gossip?

Whatever the case, I will openly advise Tchidi to stop further tweets or replies on this matter. For the record, I don't know Sophia or Nuella and haven't met with any ever and don't wish to. My concern, as a father, is for the kids from Tchidi's first marriage and perhaps future kids from this new marriage. Do not celebrate your misgivings on social media. Sheath the swords. Think of the children. The children. The children.
Those poor kids are going through indescribable torture and pain already. You don't need to add fuel to their discomfort. Angry words once written and published are hard to take back, even with the passing of time.

Celebrities are human too. That you see us on the screens or read about us does not make us less human than the other fellow. Fame and fortune only hide our foibles and finicks. But we are human. However, whilst we are human, there are expectations of decorum we all must adhere to. And if it is just for the kids, Tchidi and Sophia (and perhaps Nuella) must adhere to the dictates of decorum.

I am not writing this to take sides or blame any of the parties involved. I am writing this openly because whatever linens being displayed by all parties in the open should be brought down immediately.

May God help all parties pass through this period and bless them all as they move on to the next phase of their lives.

Amen.

Congolese student plunges to death in US after consuming marijuana

Posted: 03 Apr 2014 04:07 AM PDT

A young man who could not handle weed died on March 11th after plunging from a motel balcony in Colorado.

According to Denver Mmedical examiner, 19 year old exchange student from Republic of Congo, Levi Thamba Pongi (pictured above) jumped to his death after eating a marijuana cookie that his friend legally purchased in one of Colorado's recreational pot shops, marking the first time since recreational marijuana was legalized in the state that eating pot was listed as a "contributing factor" is someone's death.

His friends told investigators that Pongi ate the cookie and "exhibited hostile behavior" that included pulling things off walls and speaking erratically. Attempts by the three friends to calm Pongi seemed to work until he went outside and jumped over the balcony railing, according to the report.

The late teen had been visiting Colorado with friends while on Spring Break in March. Investigators believe that Levi and his companions made the trip to Colorado specifically to sample the state's legally available marijuana, including pot cookies.

From Inquisitr.com
But the trip ended with Levi Thamba plunging off a Holiday Inn balcony after experiencing a bad reaction to consuming a pot cookie, authorities say.
At age 19, Thamba is actually not able to purchase a pot cookie or any other form of legal marijuana in Colorado where, as with alcohol, the minimum age is 21. It is also illegal from a person over 21 to buy recreational pot and give it to an underage person.
Police said that one of the members of Thamba's group was over 21 and therefore could buy pot, but assuming that person gave the pot cookie to the now-deceased 19-year-old, he may now face felony charges. Authorities had not decided yet.
The four friends were staying at a Holiday Inn in northeast Denver when Thamba ate the pot cookie that he legally was not supposed to be able to possess. Then something strange happened. According to what his friends told investigators, he started going crazy.
Thamba began pulling objects off the wall of the Holdiay Inn room and acting very aggressively. His speech became "erratic." His friends tried to get control of him and thought they had succeeded in calming him down. But before they knew it, Thamba bolted out of bed and on to the balcony. And then he jumped over the edge.
Was it a bad pot cookie that caused the bizarre and ultimately fatal reaction? According to the medical examiner, one of Thamba's companions also ate some of the cookie bit began feeling ill, so he stopped.
Thamba's blood tested positive for 7.2 nanograms of HC, the active ingredient in pot, per milliliter. The legal limit for driving in Colorado is five nanograms. Thamba tested negative for alcohol and for a list of 250 other drugs and substances.
"We have no history of any other issues until he eats a marijuana cookie and becomes erratic and this happens," said Michelle Weiss-Samaras of the medical examiner's office. "It's the one thing we have that's significant."
Before coming to Colorado and eating the ill-fated pot cookie, Thamba had studied for just a few months at the Wyoming college of about 2,000 students, not far from Yellowstone National Park.

Eye witness story: How security men nearly killed James David

Posted: 03 Apr 2014 06:36 AM PDT

Emdee David tells a story of how security men assaulted his brother, James David with a machete in the early hours of Monday March 31st in their neighbourhood in Isolo, Lagos. Find the story below..
The horror and terror that befell me, my brother and the entire Franzaki Street in Bucknor Estate will forever leave us with physical, mental, and emotional indelible marks. The incidence happened on Sunday/Monday, 30th to 31stof March 2014. I was helpless as two untrained street security guards machete my brother, James David, with the intent to kill him.
A lot of things happened, but I will rather talk on, or start from where I got involved. That night, that should be around to 12 midnight or so, I was in my bedroom when all of a sudden, someone was scratching the floor with machete and later hitting my window and door with the same machete. Continue...

Then the person spoke….. "Oga, come now now o, if not, your brother will be a dead man." Then he left immediately. I recognized the voice. It was that of one of the Security guys at the street gate. I was wondering what could have happened. (one of my neigbhours said she heard it, and while he was going out of our house, he said, I know he won't come out.)

I rushed out but did not see the guy. I went outside our house gate, he wasn't there, so I decided to go towards the street gate. As I approached, I heard noises. I ran to them and what I saw shocked me. The two security men were brutally assaulting James David with a machete and a cutlass. His nose was already sliced into two and blood was on his face. Then his wrists had been badly cut. I was terrified and I started shouting on them. "What's the matter….couldn't you have waited for me? Then one of them, the tall one who I later learnt is called Emmanuel Oliseh, approached me with his cutlass and asked me to go back or he will cut me to pieces. I ran backward, but I now saw the shorter one, Frank Oliseh, still going after my brother with his big machete as James tried to move away.

Then Emmanuel, the tall one who came after me joined his brother again and was shouting "kugbuoya…kugbuoya." I understand Igbo language and what that meant. He was saying, "'kill him' (with that machete"). The short security man was now "macheting" James David on the head and on the neck. James was already weak and falling near a car that was packed near there. The car had been there for about three weeks, I guess faulty. I screamed for these guys to stop, but they refused. Then I rushed in-between them and carried my brother and started walking fast away from them. They still came after us, wielding their weapons towards my neck. I managed to dodge and James fell from my hand. I screamed again for the residence to come out, but no one came to  help. Then the two female wards living with me, Binta and Faith, were approaching, the security guys went after them and told them to go back if they don't want to die. So they ran.

They left us for a while and were ranting. They were saying, "this street people never know us o…James say we no be security people abi?...." and they said many things about blood flowing. So I knew there was trouble. One house guard, a Mallam, heard our voices and tried to open the gate….I didn't know what later happened but I later heard they chased him back.

I managed to lift my brother up, carrying him towards a nearby hospital after our own house on the street, then I heard the voices of one of the security guy, Frank. We fell on the ground, and I ran away, ran into our compound and alerted my neighbours. Three men came out, Alhaji Sallami, Mr Ben and Daddy Eni. Then Mr. Ben's brother joined later. We all went to pick James again to that hospital. Later Binta and Faith came out too and stayed with James while we went to alert the hospital. We knocked very hard but the hospital didn't open. Then my sisters, Binta and Faith, started screaming and running after us. We now saw the mad security guy, Frank coming after them. The men tried to talk to them but he told them they will kill them too. He started chasing us, everybody with the deadly weapon. Two guys from the house before ours came out too and the wielded the machete at them. As we were running towards our house, Emmanuel, the second security guy blocked us. We were now in their middle.

They chased everybody, saying they must kill, that we don't know them. Mr. Felix, who lives nearby came out thinking he could stop them, but they almost cut his neck. He ran, we all scattered, while James was lying down soaked in his blood. He was bleeding seriously. I started screaming…Franzaki People, come out o, your security men want to kill people…. I did that many times and I am sure many residents heard me. Then everybody ran sideways.

I hid in an uncompleted building and started making calls. I called a former colleague living in Estate, Mr Jacobs. I called a pastor friend, Pastor David Aya of ECWA Church, who called a few people for rescue. I called a Police woman I have her number at Okota police station. She couldn't remember me but I told her what was going on, but she cut the phone. I called Ibrahim, who is a CSO in one Custom Bonded Terminal and he called another Police officer, Filibus, who said he has alerted the police and they are signaling themselves to get RRS. But we saw no police that night.

In desperation, and as it was threatening to rain, I started sending text messages. I sent to Ahaoma Kanu, a journalist, Barrister Monday Ubani, Chairman of Ikeja Nigerian Bar Association, YAW of Wazobia FM. then I copied to Zainab, the police woman I earlier called. Pastor David, Mr. Kanu, and Ibrahim were all calling back to know the situation. But there was no police to our rescue. Where I hid I could still hear the wild security guys telling some people to lie down. Then, one man, Mr Bello opened his window from upstairs and noticed me in the uncompleted building close to his building. He asked me who I was, I told him I am James' brother and that James has been badly wounded, that I need to take check if he is not dead so I can take him to the hospital. Then Mr. Bello rushed out with his car key, took his car out. Then the mad security men came out with their weapons and ordered him to go back or else they will kill him. He told them who he is but they refused to hear or listen. His wife prevailed on him to return to the house.

When he got back to the house, he asked me to jump the fence and cross over to his house which was more secured. I did, and from then he started making calls to other security men. Not long after then, security men from other places came. They subdued the blood thirsty Frank and Emmanuel Oliseh, who I later learnt are of the same parents. Emmanuel ran away immediately but Frank was held firm.
We later found James in the bush of the plot next to ours, almost lifeless. Mr. Bello offered to take us to the hospital where James received urgent medical attention and he survived. The doctors said he'd lost much blood and would need blood transfusion. Two security guys from the other street were with us and guarded Frank from running away. Later, Emmanuel was found on the street and also driven to Ejigbo police station.

Now, I can't say what came over these security guys. They know James very well and his house and that he is my brother. He was not an intruder, a thief or a trouble maker. He is a painter and well known in the whole of Bucknor Estate.

But it was much later I heard a lot of things about them. They had threatened to shed blood because they were been owed two months' salary.  I learnt the Street Association Chairman told them to stop working if they planned any kind of trouble on the street. But they didn't. Some residents had complained that Frank and his brother have harassed them. A barber on the street, I learnt later, had complained that these two mad Frank and Emmanuel held him some days ago and beat him with their cutlass. Some women also complained about them. And I started to wonder, why should such bastards be retained?

I suspect that Frank and Emmanuel must be up to something apart from security work. They attacked James David with the aim of killing, because all the machete cuts are on the neck, his face, and his head. The deep cuts on the wrists and arms are as a result of his trying to defend his head. The car parked where I met them assaulting my brother was stained with blood and I saw it on Monday when I came home briefly from the hospital. My phones' and camera batteries were down so I couldn't take pictures, and I really had to focus on keeping James alive in the hospital. I said I would come back to do that but by Tuesday, I learnt the blood had been washed off. By Wednessday, the car was towed away. But thank God, many people saw the blood on the car and learnt it was blood from James' body when he was been brutally attacked by the security men employed by the street Association.
My sisters also said they heard him saying it is only one person they need, so someone should volunteer and lie down, then others will be free.

Right now, Frank and Emmanuel are locked up at Ejigbo Police Station, and James is still receiving medical attention, very much alive, contrary to the rumour going round in some quarters that he is dead. I will keep you all posted on this matter, as others tell their own side of the story.

By Emdee David.

Keyshia Cole & Asa confirmed for Calabar Jazz Festival this Easter

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 11:45 PM PDT

Organisers of the Calabar International Jazz Festival have announced today that Grammy-nominated R&B singer Keyshia Cole and the multi-talented songstress Asa have joined the already star-studded lineup scheduled for 18-21 April 2014. Continue...

Cole is well-known in Nigeria for her hits 'I Should Have Cheated' and 'Heaven Sent', and her two BET reality TV series 'Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is' and 'Keyshia and Daniel: Family First'. Asa returns after a triumphant performance at last year's Festival, where she wowed the crowd, switching effortlessly between vocals, guitar, trumpet and some fancy footwork.

Conoisseurs of smooth jazz, R 'n' B and African dance music can look forward to fabulous performances by Hugh Masekela, Liquideep, Jimmy Dludlu and Micasa Music (South Africa), Timotha Lanae (USA), Gwyn Jay Allen (UK) and local superstars Dare Art Alade, Yinka Davies and Kunle Ayo. Dludlu was invited to return after a spell-binding show in 2013, while living legend Masekela is a frequent visitor who considers Calabar his 'home away from home'. He will anchor a special Peace Concert, a private event hosted by His Excellency, Sen. Liyel Imoke, to highlight the futile and senseless killings around Nigeria.

According to the Governor of Cross River, the invitation-only concert is an important one: "Having endured the horrors of Apartheid, we feel it is fitting to have Hugh Masekela help us to highlight this disturbing new trend in parts of our beloved country, even as we search for solutions. We must never forget the victims."

Calabar Jazz Festival is the backbone of a great Easter weekend break for Nigerians, looking forward to escaping hectic city life in Lagos, Aubuja and Port Harcourt. Calabar beckons with its reputation for being the cleanest, greenest and safest state capital in Nigeria. In addition to the concerts, there will be fun day-time activities and tours for all the family, fabulous VIP after-parties, and, of course, an opportunity to sample some of the local delicacies which have made Calabar famous with food lovers.

While the concerts will light up the night at Calabar's Cultural Centre, with a glittering array of music stars, the venue will play host to an intriguing range of daytime activities. Music Meets Photography brings together some of Nigeria's most promising creative photographers with an audience seemingly addicted to being 'snapped', against a backdrop of live jazz and local music. Art lovers will be able to visit a gallery of beautiful paintings and sculpture, curated by Terra Kulture, in the large and imposing lobby.

Who agrees with this saying?

The saying is; God gives us what we deserve.
It's a popular saying that people like to use but I'm curious about it. Does He, really? So if you have a bad husband, bad friends, family members, colleagues etc, it's because you deserve it? If bad things happen to you, it's because you deserve it? Please share your thoughts...

LIB Exclusive: Sophia Tchidi Chikere replies Tchidi Chikere

Posted: 02 Apr 2014 04:20 PM PDT

A few hours ago, Nollywood director Tchidi Chikere took to Twitter to rubbish his estranged wife Sophia Tchidi Chikere (If you missed it, read here). Well, Sophia has responded to all the accusations leveled against her by her ex. She just sent me an exclusive statement. Find it below...
Tchidi Chikere, I read all you said about me and I laugh. Is that the best way to justify yourself? It is well. I will not exchange words with you still because there is nothing you say or write about me that will shake me because those that put their trust in God, He never fails them.
Why are you lying to people? For them to turn around and clap for you and justify what you did? Is it because people who know the truth are saying it and it's hurting you and you are now looking for a way to justify yourself. I give 10 years of my life and this is how you repay me? By disrespecting me and my family? Continue...
You said I used juju to marry you. If truly I and my family used juju to hold you, let God who sees everything judge me and you.

You bring money for the upkeep of your kids and you are writing about it? Like seriously, are they not your kids? Whose responsibility is that? And who is disputing that with you? You said since you married me that I have not given you no love, no affection etc but you forgot the interview you granted to Punch newspaper in 2011 saying that I am the best thing that have happened to you.

You said I never had time for you? When you are always filming in the east and I won't see you in months. I played the role of father and mother to the kids...and I laughed the more when I saw where you wrote that I didn't feed you for 5 days.. Is this all in desperation to justify yourself? Wow!!

You said marriages are not contracted on the pages of newspaper and granting interviews yet you people have been granting interviews upon interviews since 2012.. Have I said anything against you? But I won't say anything against you. Keep saying lies about me thinking you can tarnish my image by putting up this childish and immature behavior.

Even if you say that I am a prostitute tomorrow or a thief, people who know the truth know the truth and God knows everything and sees the heart and he will pay everybody back according to our deeds. So am not shaking!!

I will never say anything against you to gain favour from people! No you can't hide pregnancy. I gave you my life for 12 years, gave you 3 lovely boys, gave you a home. And you always say to me then, I was a good wife to you and you know it. I was loyal to you and never cheated on you. I swallowed and stomached so many things just to make my marriage work. I turned deaf ears to so many things and covered my eyes to so many things.

I remember all the stories I heard about your escapades with other women, but did I leave you? I stayed with you because marriage is for better or worse and when you started your affair with Nuella in 2010, what did you say to me when I confronted you?

I stayed, endured and prayed every night. Have you forgotten the day I almost committed suicide? The first time you left me and the kids? I wanted to end my life but God saved me. Even as you left us in 2012, I keep saying to people that my marriage is intact and I never changed my name from Sophia Tchidi Chikere till date.

Have you not done enough to me? You are married now and still I wish you and your new wife well. Why can't you leave me alone to face my children and fill up the vacuum this has created in their lives? You say such evil things against their mother and they are hearing it from their schoolmates. Their schoolmates are taking about it and asking them questions everyday and yet your not satisfied. You claim you kept quiet because of them, yet you have been talking and tarnishing my image since 2012? Yet I kept mute. I have not and will never say anything bad against you. Vengeance is of the Lord, unless he is not on the throne.

You put up my pictures with my friend to use against me? You want to use it to justify what you did to me? What you put me through for years? You said he is my boyfriend that I go to see in London and I ask you Tchidi, when I was with you, did I not go to London 2 or 3 times yearly to buy clothes for my boutique? Everybody knows that I am a business woman and I buy my products from London and America. And so because I have a friend in London, I now go there just to see him? Lol He is my friend, my pal, my buddy and my best friend.

We started being good friends in 2013 after Chidi left me and ended our marriage. He is someone that is very close to me and my confidant. All these years I have had women as best friends and they all betrayed me, and I decided to have a guy as my best friend. We go everywhere together and he assists me in shopping and buying things for my shop etc I can't deny him. He is my friend. People that know me very well will tell you that I love taking pictures and so we took lots of pictures and the guy posted it on his Facebook page and some people copied it and started posting it online. I have also kept mute about it and I would have still keep mute if not that Tchidi raises it and wanted to use it to tarnish my name.

But is well. My kids read what their daddy wrote about me and they asked me to respond and tell the whole world that you are wonderful mother and that they know and they are seeing everything and won't say anything till they grow up! So am responding to this because of my three lovely boys that I live for, that am blessed with.

I want to beg Tchidi to please allow me to concentrate and train my kids with God's grace and help. I wish him the best in his new marriage.I bless his new marriage with his new wife and I wish them well. This will be my last statement. Even if Chidi pulls the mountain to paint me black.. I will not respond again.

Thank you
