'I brought Buhari into politics' - Maryam Abacha gives rare interview Posted: 08 Apr 2014 12:59 PM PDT Former First Lady of Nigeria, Maryam Abacha hardly speaks to the press. Since her husband, former military head of state, Sani Abacha, died, the mother of 10 has been living a relatively quiet life. But she recently gave a rare interview to Abubakar Hashim of The News magazine and opened up on a few things. Find the interview below... How has life been with you since the death of your husband? When you heard of his sudden death, how did you take it? How did you feel? My husband's death was like a coup. It was sudden and shrouded in confusion. General Abdulasalami [Abubakar] just called me, telling me to come and collect the dead body. We buried him like any other ordinary Nigerian. It was quite unfortunate the way he died. Allah knows best and unto Him we shall all return. May his soul rest in peace. I'm yet to fully recover from the shock of his death. And how did you both meet? Like any other would-be couple. He was a charming, handsome and likeable personality; a loving father who liked his children and loved ones. We became friends and got married. Here are pictures in the family album; before, during and after our wedding day. He was a caring husband, a dedicated father and an affectionate grandfather. President Goodluck Jonathan awarded your late husband a centenary award. How did you feel receiving the award? We felt happy. Maybe this is the beginning of good things to happen to Nigeria; maybe reconciliation… President Jonathan is a young man, he is using his time and energy to bring peace and reconciliation. I think it is high time we all come together to lift the country and stabilise ourselves. I hope it is the beginning of good things to come. Do you still continue with the pet projects you embarked on when you were first lady? I did those projects on government basis. They are still on there. Obasanjo did not change the names, neither did subsequent [Presidents]. The African First Ladies Peace Mission is still there, the Poverty Alleviation Programme, the National Programme on Immunisation, the Family Support Programme, the Family Support Basic Education Programme and the Family Economic Advancement Programme are all there. These are projects and programmes that touched the lives of the people, particularly women. The National Hospital is there and so are the other hospitals around the country. I never did any programme for my personnal benefit, but for the government and the people of the country. So today, in my personnal capacity, on whether I'm still embarking on these projects, I'm no longer in government so I'm not embarking on such projects. I tried my best as the then first lady to bring about all-round development, particularly for women in the rural areas. We did extensive reach-out to the rural populace and touched lives in the remote areas of the country. Do you have any political ambition? No, I don't have any political ambition. For the presidency, at least; the first woman President of Nigeria? Not at all. I was a first lady. I just want peace for the country. Stability and development are not achieved by one person. There are governors, ministers, local chairmen, civil servants and the like. It is a cluster of people. The President alone does not make a government. What is your assessment of General Muhammadu Buhari, and by extension, the All Progressives Congress, APC? I brought General Buhari into politics; It's not that I want to expose him. We did everything to support and encourage him. He called my son Mohammed to join Congress for Progressive Change, CPC. They rejected Mohammed by force during the governorship race. This was the trend, not only in Kano, but also in Katsina, Bauchi and other states. I think it is not healthy for democracy; not just because of Mohammed but for the smooth play of democratic norms and values. Democracy is the choice of the people. But when people put their own personal interest first and they interfere [in the process], then it is no longer democracy. It is unfortunate that elders like them could come belittle themselves in the race. For the APC I cannot comment. It is not yet time for me to do so. However, it is good for democracy to have competition and opposition. It enhances democratic values, norms and stabilises the country's image, and will eventually uplift our democratic credentials in the international comity of nations. Your son, Mohammed, wanted to be governor of Kano State. It is the people of Kano that wanted my son to be governor. They still want him to be governor. They've been calling us to come and intensify his campaign. In fact, they are even campaigning on his behalf. So it is people of Kano that want him as governor because they appreciate his father's contribution to various fields of endeavour. They also appreciate the little projects and programmes I did in Kano and in the country. They say he should come and continue the projects and programmes in Kano. The late General Sani Abacha contributed to the restoration of democracy in Sierra Leone. Could you comment on the role he played in the process. I cannot tell you exactly how he played this role as I was not a soldier, I was just a housewife. But he tried his best for Sierra Leone and thank God it was a success and indeed, peace returned to Sierra Leone. The late Ahmad Tejan Kabbah was restored to power. It was indeed a tragedy to hear about his death recently. He was an African statesman of international repute. I remember one of his visits [to Nigeria] after he was restored to office; he was so calm, amiable and indeed, supportive of a just pan-African solution to African crises. He was indeed, a true democrat of continental proportion. My late husband honoured him and appreciated him. What message do you have for the people of Sierra Leone on the death of Kabbah? I send my sympathy, my condolence and my prayers. May God give them peace, may God give them the fortitude to bear the great loss of the father of democracy in that country. May God give the present president, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, the power to emulate what the previous president had done, particularly entrenching stability, peace and democracy in Sierra Leone. I wish President Koroma all the best. He is a young man. I wish the people of Sierra Leone all the best. I have never been there but I hope to be there in my lifetime. I learnt it is a small and beautiful country with about six million people, with lots of natural resources including diamond and oil. May God Almighty grant the late President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah eternal rest. May Allah also grant my late husband eternal rest. Nigeria and Sierra Leone have a long, historical relationship. We look forward to building on the strong ties that have cemented us for so long a period. That was why my late husband stood by Sierra Leone in the time of her crisis; to restore democracy, sanity and stability in the country. We couldn't stand by and watch Sierra Leone fall into anarchy, because the entire West African region would have been affected. So we moved in to bring back normalcy and sanity to the country. So my wish for Sierra Leoneans is that they maintain peace and stability, especially the peaceful democratic course we've seen in past elections. We want this to continue so that other countries will emulate it. …Published in TheNEWS magazine

Chris Brown finally touches down in D.C after days in Con Air Posted: 08 Apr 2014 07:45 AM PDT God, give this guy strength. Looks like they are trying to lock him up this time. Chris Brown was loaded onto a con-air flight to D.C. last Thursday to face misdemeanor assault charges for attacking a fan back in October but didn't get there until late yesterday, (the plane stops in different cities to pick other prisoners) making him miss his first hearing. In his absence, a judge rejected his request to dismiss his case on the grounds that the prosecution unlawfully took the case before a grand jury, meaning his case is moving forward. According to reports, after Chris Brown arrived D.C yesterday, he was transferred to the Northern Neck Regional Jail in Warsaw, Virginia where he will stay until the start of his trial on April 17th.
"My thoughts on the Arik-Air flight debacle" - Banky W Posted: 08 Apr 2014 07:20 AM PDT Banky W, one of the passengers on the Arik Air Lagos to New York flight on March 31st shares his thoughts on the incident that left passengers protesting on board. Find it below...
The problem was, the air conditioning was not turned on. Midnight soon passed, and there was still no A/C, neither did it feel like we were going anywhere, anytime soon. Passengers were vigorously fanning themselves, asking for water and ice from the Crew, and doing whatever they could to stay cool and hydrated. The reality was that the heat in the plane was quite frankly unbearable. It's hot enough in Nigeria these days, and then you couple that with a cabin whose doors have been shut, and a bunch of people locked inside that enclosed space… suffice it to say it escalated from bad to worse very quickly. The Captain made another announcement about how he's "sorry for the delay, but it was due to the ground operations", and that there was only one engine on and that was why the A/C could not be turned on yet. By now it was well past 12:30 and people were becoming extremely frustrated. Parents had begun taking the clothes off their children, children were crying, one lady looked like she would faint. Still, there was no further update on when we would take off and when the A/C would come on. Almost an hour into this debacle, many passengers became justifiably irate. We were all drenched in sweat, burning hot, and it was hard to breathe properly. Now, let me interject here to say this… I believe that up till now, it was actually Arik's policy to not turn on the A/C on their Aircrafts until take-off. I'm not sure why, but I've flown on many of their local routes within Nigeria and 100% of the time, this is always the case. The difference though is that usually, once boarding has been completed, it only takes a few minutes before take-off begins, and the A/C comes on pretty quickly, so while it's unacceptable, it has been… tolerable. In this case however, we had been on board for well over an hour, and now passengers that had surged up front into my section actually said people were fainting, and more people were going to pass out. It was disastrous, to say the least. Just before the passengers surged into my section up front (I was in seat 1A), I actually saw the pilots pull the one foreign air hostess into the cockpit and lock the door behind them. I suspect that either the A/C may have been on in the Cockpit, or that he was concerned for his and her safety because the shouting from the back indicated that people were in a state of panic and riot. Either way, I thought his actions came off as incredibly ignorant and prejudice against the Nigerian Staff (who were doing their absolute best to try and calm people down), and against the very Nigerian passengers who he was employed to take care of. As the people surged up front and started banging on the cockpit door, the Captain made yet another announcement that people should be patient for a few more minutes, and of course it had been well over an hour so none of the irate passengers were having it. He also said that if people did not go back to their assigned seats, he would have to call the police. Of course this did nothing but provide further incentive for people to be angry, frustrated, irate… you name it. By this time, the entire section around my seat was filled with screaming passengers, banging on the cockpit door and yelling at the Nigerian Staff who were still pleading with us. I actually feared for the safety of the Air Hostesses, and for the equipment on the plane; the captain was not saying anything to calm people down, and would not dare show his face, and was not hearkening to the cries of people that he should open the cabin doors and let us out until they were actually ready to take off. I feared that more drastic measures were going to be taken by the irate passengers, which is why I stood up at that point to try and calm them down. My reasoning was that I'd been on enough Arik flights to know that this was their policy, so I didn't feel like the plane was not fit to fly. I suggested that seeing as we'd already waited that long, we give them another 5-10 minutes, because if we disrupted the flight or caused damage, they would have to kick us off and begin the entire process from start. Some of the passengers calmed down after I spoke, while some were just intent on fighting or doing something drastic to express their displeasure… (one very short angry man actually tried to take out his anger on me, but I felt bad for him so I didn't let that escalate). In any case, soon after that, the Captain announced he was beginning take-off procedures, and I felt the A/C come on. This further helped me make my case to the passengers, and most of the people started going back to their seats. What further shocked me at this point was that the Captain actually started taxiing the plane on the runway, while people were still making their way back to their seats. This seemed to be both dangerous AND illegal, in my opinion. To be fair though, it did motivate people to quickly rush back to their seats. Including our short and irate friend who at this time was screaming at the top of his lungs, and topless. After this though, the rest of the flight went on incident free, thank God. Many news agencies, upon seeing me in the footage online, have contacted me asking for details of what happened, and my opinion on the incident. My thoughts are as follows: it was an avoidable disaster, and one that could have ended up much worse for the staff and equipment of Arik Air. This policy of enclosing passengers within a cabin with no A/C is senseless; I suspect that it saves them some money because they don't need to rent/buy ground power units to power the planes while they finish their operations, but it is unfair, cruel and inhumane to the clients of the airline to subject their comfort and even health to such conditions, all in the name of cutting costs. A few years ago, I took this flight route on Arik Air for the first time, primarily because I needed to be in NYC as quickly as possible on business, and they were the only carrier that went directly with no layovers. I was very impressed by pretty much every aspect of the flight. It was convenient and clean; the seats were big and comfortable; the staff was friendly and courteous; I was so impressed that for a short while, I stopped using my usual international Carriers. The one downside at the time, was that the food wasn't quite the best, and there was no frequent flier mileage program. I remember filling out a suggestion form at the time, along with some other passengers, and we all commented that the food could be better. Shortly after that, I was beyond impressed to find that they had changed their menu and food supplier, and stepped up the quality to the point that it was as good, or better than most other carriers. It felt like they were really responding to the needs and expectations of their patrons, and I thought this was a great start for the Airline. I'm a proud Nigerian… and I'm a fan of all things good that are Nigerian. We have many issues as a country, but I've always been of the opinion that we have to fix ourselves. We have to police ourselves, and play our part in changing Nigeria and making Her better. As such, whenever possible, I try to support Nigerian owned businesses. My suits, for instance, are made by Mai Atafo; he has impressed me so much that I now refuse to buy suits from anywhere else in the world, because of the quality of his craftsmanship; and it is a source of pride for me when I'm asked by colleagues, clients and fans around the world where I got my suit from, and I'm able to tell them that it was made by a Nigerian Designer. Arik is currently our only airline that flies to international cities like London and New York; however instead of being a source of pride, they've allowed their standards to drop over time. There are 24 seats in my section, about 10 of them are not functional and have not been in months. The entertainment system is a joke; there are only a handful of tv shows and films available for viewing, and they are the same exact films/shows that were available years ago when they started flying to NYC. They literally have not changed the movies in YEARS. They just flat out refuse to upgrade what they have, and seem content to let it deteriorate. There is still no frequent flier program, even though for years they told passengers to hold on to their boarding passes, as it would soon commence. "Soon" has taken an eternity with no end in sight. Attention to detail is crucial, and very often, it is the difference between greatness and mediocrity; between growth and decline, success and failure. I'd be remiss if I didn't point out some of the positives that the airline still has. For one, I've found their Nigerian staff to be very polite, courteous and helpful. The food quality is still great - I have no complaints on anything I've tasted so far, other than the fish peppersoup – yuck! The duck however, was fantastic, as well as everything else I've eaten on board. Generally speaking, their cleanliness standards have not dropped either, thank God. And lastly, the direct flight to NYC remains as convenient as it gets for someone like me who sometimes needs to save time spent in European layovers. I've witnessed them make positive changes before due to the suggestion surveys passengers filled out; my hope, in writing this, is that they do the same again, fix the issues and give us a Nigerian Airline that will be a source of pride, not pain. - B.W. PS: Not everyone needs to be in NYC like myself; I suggest to the powers that be, to try and partner with an American carrier, so that once you touch down in NY, you can easily transition to a local flight to take you to your final destination. PPS: I apologize for the extremely long article. I have even more to say but this will have to do.

Iyabo Ojo changes NGO name to refute Lesbian stories Posted: 08 Apr 2014 06:17 AM PDT Yoruba actress Iyabo Ojo started a foundation 3 years ago called Sexy Pinky Ladies which caused some people to insinuate that the female members of the group were all lesbians hiding under the name of the foundation to carry out their activities. To correct this negative impression, Iyabo Ojo says she had no choice but to change the NGO's name to Pinkies Foundation. In a recent chat with Encomium mag, the actress who is celebrating 3 years of running the NGO talked about the lesbian rumours and how she dealt with it... "It really wasn't easy but I think it was my fault. I think the name we started with attracted all the controversies. When it was Sexy Pink Ladies, people were attaching a lot of things to it. That was why we had to rebrand and tell people it is a foundation. We are just being focused because the bad press was too much. Some members even had to opt out because the impression people had of us. This is understandable because up to 80% of us are married and it was causing some of them issues in their homes, so had to leave the group for the sake of their homes. Some remained and their spouses got to know what we do and they saw that it's just unfounded rumor and they supported us" she said.See photos from her 3rd anniversary after the cut...

FG ordered to pay families of Apo killing N10million each Posted: 08 Apr 2014 05:07 AM PDT On Friday Sept. 20th, military men stormed an uncompleted building behind Legislator's Quarters in Apo, Abuja and shot dead 8 people. (Read story here). Now the families of all 8 victims are to be paid N10m each by the Federal Government as damages, while the 11 people who sustained various injuries during the attack are to be awarded N5m each. The Nigerian military had launched an attack on the building, suspecting it to be a hideout for Boko Haram members. According to the National Human Rights Commission, the Federal Government and security agents have till date not been able to substantiate their claim that the people found in the building had ties with Boko Haram, causing the NHRC to award them the victim's families damages. Chidi Odinkalu, who presided over the panel of enquiry into the killing of some squatters in a residence in Apo by security operatives, announced this at the public presentation of the panel's report in Abuja. "Having investigated the complaint, heard all the parties and examined the relevant laws, there is no credible evidence to show that the victims were members of Boko Haram. The self defense asserted by the respondents was not supported by facts and the application of lethal force was disproportionate and the killing of the eight persons and injuries to 11 others were unlawful", he said. The Federal Government was given 30 days counting from yesterday April 7th to pay the damages and provide proof to the registry of the NHRC

The judges illustrated the many ways to use the Kenwood Kitchen equipment's easily. The Kenwood Rice Cooker, Kenwood Kitchen machine and the Kenwood Food Processor were among the ingenious labour-saving equipment used to make the cooking process faster, and easier. For example, the Kenwood Food processor can be used as a juicer, blender, cutter, shredder etc., and the Kenwood Kitchen Machine can whip cream, whisk eggs, grind meat, and a whole lot more. These made the work of the judges and contestants very easy as they finished in record time, and their dishes of good quality. The ingredients are getting tougher with each week, and now that the contestants have been taught and assisted by the judges, the next episode promises to be more challenging and we mayeven see some contestants evicted. 3 females, and 4 males left, do you think we can have a female winner this season? Real fun at #MTNCelebdouble Invasion Party: MTN Ambs. appear in double Posted: 08 Apr 2014 02:19 AM PDT Lagos, Benin and Enugu witnessed real fun last weekend when the #MTNCelebdouble finally produced the company's ambassadors' look-alikes. It was hard to differentiate between most of the musical superstars and their close splitting images. This resulted in momentary suspense, mixed with fun, as the hundreds of musical fans who thronged to the separate clubs, to be part of the Invasion, struggled to spot out the real image. The fans were thrilled to meet their idolised celebrities and the 'doubles'. Continue... In Lagos, precisely, at the 'The Place', the confusion of those present was exciting. While the music blasted away, Don Jazzy, Iyanya, Tiwa Savage and Chidinma walked in. The crowd was soon amazed as the striking resemblances of Davido, Wizkid, Praiz and D'Prince stepped in behind them. There were minutes of debates if they were the real ambassadors or the look-alikes they have come to party with it. Wizkid's double, Mbaefo Stanley, who resides in Port Harcourt, could not hold his joy at the sight of the celebrities and pomp around him. He expressed cheerfully, 'this is one of my best nights'. Like him, Ogbonna John who resides in Lagos, was ecstatic. He said, 'I have always dreamed of this moments'. Also, David Fortune, D'Prince's double and Odeka Arthur who looked perfectly like the Nigerian R & B singer and Headies Award winner, Praiz, said they would treasure the night for a long time. Meanwhile, Iyanya, who wore a new look, enthusiastically appreciated the large turn-out, saying it gave him satisfaction to party with Nigerian musical fans and find someone who looked him. Don Jazzy and Tiwa Savage also expressed the same feeling while leaving the club located on Adeola Odeku, at the early hour of the morning. In Benin, the celebdoubles bore an unbelievable resemblance to the actual celebs themselves. Prior to the actual party, they had been lodged in a luxurious hotel, taken on a shopping spree, given a high-class spa treatment, and spoilt silly. One of the Celebdoubles was Adeoye Foyinsade who bears a striking resemblance to Tiwa Savage. She gushed over the entire privileges accorded her by MTN. "I really didn't expect that it'd be this cool! Not only do I look like Tiwa Savage, from the way I have been treated all day, I think I might be her! Hanging out with everyone here caps it up nicely". Similar experience was recorded in Enugu. Harrysong and Praiz were at the Toscana Hotel, the venue which hosted a massive crowd of fans who relived their fantasies of becoming those they idolized. The two MTN ambassadors Praiz and Harrysong, performed some of their hit songs that made them so endearing. To crown it Praiz joked: "When I saw someone looking so much like me, I actually thought he was me, the semblance was on point".
Arik apologizes to passengers on flight from LOS-JFK on March 31st Posted: 08 Apr 2014 02:10 AM PDT On March 31th, passengers on an Arik flight from Lagos to New York were subjected to hardship as there was almost an hour flight delayed departure plus the airplane's air condition was not working, leading to passengers protesting on board. (Read here). The Airline company has issued a statement this morning apologizing for the discomfort and inconvenience. Their statement below...
In this regard, the experienced schedule delay was a result of complications related to the cargo loading process as managed by Arik Air's contracted ground-handling agent. Unfortunately, whilst efforts were rightly being expended to overcome the cargo loading difficulties, the backup air conditioning unit (which should have been provided by our ground handling agent) was declared unserviceable and thus unavailable for use. Upon resolution of the cargo loading difficulties, the air-conditioning system was finally restored as the aircraft prepared for immediate departure under its own engine power. Arik Air, and its Management, acknowledges that the handling of the situation on board was less than satisfactory and falls well short of the high standards of service that its esteemed travelling guest have come to expect of us (and which we demand of ourselves). Arik Air's Management wishes to assure our esteemed guests that the necessary remedial measures have been initiated to prevent the repetition of such an incident to the extent possible/controllable. Arik Air is committed to providing a safe and comfortable air transport service to every guest and on every journey. Arik Air wishes to thank all guests who endured this inconvenience patiently, despite both the trying circumstance and the unfortunate exhibition of aggression, to both people and property, by a minority of unruly passengers onboard the aircraft. Arik Air values, greatly, its relationship with her guest. Hence, to all the affected guests, please note that we intend to pursue the restoration of the trust and faith vested in us by your good-selves. In this respect, Arik Air shall be contacting each affected guest on flight W3107 31st March 2014, to express these sentiments (and seek such restitution of trust) individually. Once again, please accept our humble and sincere apologies. You and your patronage are dear to us. We exist to serve you and we look forward to doing so again in the near future.
