Ventures Africa launches list of Africa's Richest People for 2014

Posted: 16 Nov 2014 04:29 AM PST

Ventures Africa, an African business magazine and news service, has today launched its second annual ranking of Africa's wealthiest people. The Richest People in Africa list remains the most comprehensive compilation of the continent's wealthiest individuals.

In 2014, Ventures Africa counted 55 African billionaires with a net worth totalling $161.7 billion, a 12.4% rise from $143.8 billion in 2013.

This year Nigeria remains the continent's top contributor to the Rich List. Of the 55billionaires, 23 are Nigerian. Their collective wealth is $77.7 billion. This is 48 percent of the total Rich List wealth, almost as much as the other countries combined.

Other key findings from the research include:
·         Nigeria has four new billionaires. Cletus Ibeto, founder of multi-business conglomerate, Ibeto Group, leads the list of newcomers with a net worth of $3.7 billion. He is followed by Benedict Peters, an oil magnate valued at $2.7 billion. Well-known financier and philanthropist Tony Elumelu, valued at $1.6 billion, and Akanimo Udofia, worth $1 billion, complete the list.
·         AlikoDangote, founder of Africa's largest industrial conglomerate Dangote Group, remains the continent's richest man. His net worth has grown to $25.7 billion, a 21% rise from his $20.2 billion valuation in 2013.
·         Igho Sanomi, a Nigerian oil trader, shares the position of Africa's youngest billionaire with Mohammed Dewji, Tanzania's richest man. At 39, Igho Sanomi, the founder of oil conglomerate Taleveras Group, is worth $1.3 billion.
·         FolorunshoAlakija, the richest black woman in the world, is worth $7.3 billion dollars.
·         Almost 40% of Nigeria's billionaires' wealth is tied to its oil and gas industry.

Chi-Chi Okonjo, Founder of Ventures Africa, said:
"The Ventures Africa Rich List is the most authoritative accounting of individual African wealth. We have been able to do so because of our on-the-ground experience and detailed knowledge of the local African business landscape."
The list has been compiled using financial reports, by tracking equity holdings around stock markets and identifying specific shareholding structures in large, privately-held companies. The results have been corroborated with investment bankers, realtors and financial analysts to determine proper valuations.

Posted: 16 Nov 2014 03:58 AM PST

Find the EFCC press statement below
A 70-year-old man, Adebola Oyewole Asiwaju, has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for allegedly attempting to fraudulently sell the shares of one Olalere Sunday Oladosu.
To perfect the scam, the suspect allegedly forged documents and opened a bank account in a new generation bank, with the assumed name of "Olalere Sunday Oladosu".
Then, he proceeded to instruct Marina Securities, a brokerage, to dispose of 1.7million units of Zenith Bank shares valued at N42million and remit the proceeds to the account he opened with the new generation bank.
The lid on the scam was lifted when a routine check by staff of Marina Securities revealed some discrepancies in the documents presented by the suspect and the ones the genuine owner of the shares had filed with the defunct Intercontinental Securities Limited.
Consequently, the suspect was arrested by the Nigeria Police, and later handed over to the EFCC for further investigation and prosecution.
The suspect is alleged to be neck deep in stealing shares of unsuspecting investors and selling them for a commission. He is believed to work for a syndicate and receives 10 percent of the proceeds of any "business" that sails through. His accomplices are still at large. Other names that Asiwaju has used in fraudulent shares sale include, Babajide Odunso and Chief Bolaji Carew. The suspect will be arraigned in court as soon as investigation in concluded.

Photos: AFRIFF Day 5: Fireworks

Posted: 16 Nov 2014 02:17 AM PST

Kunle Afolayan has been criticized for being a bad actor but there was nothing bad about his performance in legendary filmmakers film TundeKelani's Dazzling Mrage.

Truth be told, his performance could simply be adjudged amongst the best at this year's AFRIFF.  Starring alongside Kemi "Lala" Akindoju, both actors turned up the chemistry in this social conscience drama about the plight of people living with sickle cell.

According to Tunde Kelani, the film was conceived in 2011 and he was not ready to be subtle about the theme of the film. The campaign for sickle cell was splash all over and if you did not know anything about it before the film at the end, you will be a campaigner.

Dazzling mirage was a beautiful climax of day that saw Mildred Okwo take jabs at film directors for not bringing out the best in actor in a workshop themed; ACTING WITH INTEGRITY. Kunle and Lala acted with integrity and vindicated uncle TK from such jabs. While many of the directors could not attend the workshop as their films were screening at the time, word quickly got to them in the spirit of friendship this year's festival has birthed.

And when all gathered at the pool party to fraternizeunder the lit skies of fireworks at Tinapa pool side, they talked about everything that went down earlier; from the amazing performance of Christa Eka (Cameroonian) in Damaru, where the actors learnt sign language to act with integrity, to workshops by Jude Idada, Tunde kelani and Yemi Akintokun on ADAPTING AFRICAN LITERATURE FOR SCREEN.

Nigerian military reclaim seized Chibok community

Posted: 16 Nov 2014 12:27 AM PST

24 hours after Boko Haram men captured Chibok town in Borno state, soldiers from the 7th Division of the Nigerian army yesterday reclaimed the community after a long gun battle that started yesterday morning.

An indigene of Chibok who spoke with Leadership, said a large deployment of soldiers were seen moving in from the direction of Damboa on Saturday morning and engaged the sect members in a gun battle, eventually overpowering them.
"We saw large number of trucks filled with uniformed personnel moving towards Chibok; initially, we were scared but later realised they were soldiers as they did not harass us like the Boko Haram gunmen usually do" the source said
Confirming the recent development, a top military officer who spoke anonymously said
"We have taken back Chibok town from the insurgents after some few hours of engagement with them. We have since sent them parking from the town; it is now safe for people to return to their homes".
