Photos: Ministry of Petroleum Resources & Defence Headquarters strategize to protect pipelines

Posted: 02 Feb 2016 11:50 AM PST

The Ministry of Petroleum Resources and the Defence Headquarters are perfecting the synergy between the two organisations towards curbing the menace of crude oil theft & pipelines vandalism.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu was in Defence Headquarters today, February 2, where he was briefed by the high powered Committee set up to work out actionable modality for protection of oil and gas pipelines across the country.

It would be recalled that issue of oil theft and pipelines vandalism was extensively discussed few months ago when Dr Kachikwu, then the Group Managing Director (GMD) of the NNPC, visited the DHQ. The aftermath of that visit was the setting up of a Committee to provide guidelines for the protection of oil and gas pipelines by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Gabriel Olonisakin.

The Committee, which was headed by Rear Admiral Joseph Okojie, was composed of the Military, Police, Civil Defence, Department of State Service, NNPC, EFCC, NPA, Department of Petroleum Resources, NIMASA and other relevant stakeholders. During interaction on the Report, both the Honourable Minister and the CDS agreed that involvement of host communities was very paramount in the success of any action to be taken.

The military, the CDS agreed, would play major role in quick response while acquisition of new technology would be also vital for the holistic intervention in the emerging modality for the oil and gas pipelines protection.

The CDS further reiterated the Military's commitment to securing the National Critical Infrastructure, and warned that any act of criminality such as pipelines vandalism and other sabotage would not be condoned and added that such groups or individuals engaging in such criminality would be dealt with according to the law.

See the magical pics of toddler and beast that looks like they were ripped straight out of a Disney flick

Posted: 02 Feb 2016 11:29 AM PST

In these pictures taken in Phoenix park, in Dublin Ireland, two-year-old Barbara Irwin can be seen as she somehow got a big deer to eat out of her hands. The beast had been standing there waiting patiently for his share as the toddler nibbled away on a carrot, when she did offer him a piece, the scene that follows is one for the movies. See more photos after the cut...

The magical pictures were taken by the tot's mum, Wiktoria Irwin, 33, who took her children to the park where the deer are known for interacting with families. She was at the park with her husband, Ronan, and three children, Amelia, 10, Michael and Barbara, 3. She said:
"My friend showed me this place and we went for a family drive a week prior to last Sunday, to have a look around, and take few photographs",
"We didn't bring any snacks so the deer had no interest in us but last Sunday we had carrots, though more than half were consumed by kids in the park. As you can see in the photographs Barbara is smiling eating a carrot and the deer patiently waits until he will get his piece in the final photograph",
'When he came up to take the food, I was telling my husband to mind the antlers, they are tamed deer but still I was a bit anxious. We had seen that they were gently taking treats, rather stretching their neck to get the carrot, but still you know I'm a mum, mum's always worry",
'All my children were really happy with this experience, it was amazing to witness it. I'll always cherish that moment and having it photographed makes it so special to me".
Barbara's brother and father also had their moment with the deer but not quite as magical as hers.
Phoenix Park has around 450 fallow deer descending from the original herd introduced in the 1660s and some 200 fawns can be born each year.  More photos...

President Buhari's foreign trips not a jamboree but for the good of the country - Garba Shehu

Posted: 02 Feb 2016 08:46 AM PST

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on media and publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu has dismissed the insinuations that the President Buhari's numerous foreign trips were a jamboree.

President Buhari has so far travelled to over 20 countries since his inauguration and is set to embark on an official visit to France and Britain later today.

Garba, who spoke to State House correspondents in Abuja on Monday stated that the Buhari's trips had enabled his government to secure agreements and understanding with various countries on recovery and repatriation of stolen funds.

He revealed that security officials from Nigeria would be in United Arab Emirates, UAE, next week to finalize the agreement on recovery and repatriation of stolen funds.
"You also see gradually the strategic efforts to go after the stolen funds abroad. The UAE is very important to the country. Don't be surprised that in the coming week or two, you will see high level security officials leaving Nigeria for the UAE to begin to give expression to our wish to enjoy this new cooperation between the two countries with a view to recovering stolen assets. There are numerous agreements we have also signed with them. Drugs, human trafficking and stolen assets that have been stolen abroad. So, the President wants to make it difficult for people, even when then steal from Nigeria, there would probably be no hiding place for stolen assets"

Fayose counsels Buhari over incessant foreign trips, says; “unnecessary trips bleeding country’s economy”

Posted: 02 Feb 2016 08:46 AM PST

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has counselled President Mohammadu Buhari to stay at home and govern the country instead of junketing from one country to the other, saying; "foreign countries won't solve our problems for us and the President's incessant foreign trips is already bleeding the economy with about $1 million being spent per trip."

The governor, who said most of the trips embarked on by the President were unnecessary, added that ministers or at best the Vice President could have been made to attend most of the functions being attended abroad by the President. According to a statement issued in Ado-Ekiti by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said that "the President should rather listen more to those of us who criticise him instead of those hailing every of his wrong steps either because of what they intend to gain or for fear of persecution."

The statement read; "Conservatively, about $1 million goes into every of the foreign trips and the way the President is going, foreign trips alone might gulp 20 percent of the Federal Government budget and that will be disastrous for the dwindling economy of the country. "It is even more worrisome that while the economy is already in shamble and insecurity pervades the land with Boko Haram burning Nigerians, including children alive in the North East, our President is busy globetrotting.

"From available records, in June 2015 alone, the President travelled to Niger Republic, Chad, Germany and South Africa. Also in 2015, the President travelled to United States of America in July, Benin Republic in August, Ghana and France in September, India in October, Iran, France and United States of America in November and in December, he travelled to South Africa, Benin Republic.

"This year alone, President Buhari has travelled to the United Arab Emirate, Kenya, Ethiopia and he is leaving for France and United Kingdom today to spend four days abroad.

"In most of these trips, about $500,000 is spent on estacode, transportation, accommodation, honorarium, media coverage, contingency and other expenses on accompanying Presidency officials. The Presidential Air Fleet, which includes fuelling of the planes and allowances for crew members as well as the President's estacode per night and those of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and his aides is said to be in the range of $500,000.

"Out of his eight months as President of Nigeria, two months have been spent outside the country, and one wonders how a country like Nigeria can progress with its president spending the better part of his time abroad. "Mr President is therefore advised to focus more on governing Nigeria from home because foreign countries won't solve our problems for us.

He should fulfil his promise of leading the fight against Boko Haram from the front. Most importantly, the President should pay more attention to the ailing economy of the country while he carries on with genuine fight against corruption."
