Boko Haram kidnaps wife of Cameroon's Vice Prime Minister

Posted: 27 Jul 2014 06:27 AM PDT

The wife of Cameroon's Vice Prime Minister, Amadou Ali, was kidnapped this morning July 27th after men of the Boko Haram sect stormed her home in the northern town of Kolofata, Cameroon's information minister and government spokesman revealed.

Mrs Ali was kidnapped alongside her domestic staff and one other person. The insurgents also killed 3 people in the attack on Kolofata, a town in Cameroon's Far North Region near Nigeria

Colonel Felix Nji Formekong, the second commander of Cameroon's third inter-army military region (RMIA3) based in the regional headquarters of Maroua, said the sect members are believed to still be in the town fiercely engaging military officers
"The situation is very critical here now, and as I am talking to you the Boko Haram elements are still in Kolofata town in a clash with our soldiers. Some of them have already taken away the wife of Vice Prime Minister Ahmadou Ali and her house help while the bodyguards of the Vice Prime Minister have succeeded in taking him out of the town to Mora," Formekong said, adding that there could be more casualties" he said

"I'm disappointed no secular artiste came for Kefee's burial' - Daddy Showkey

Posted: 27 Jul 2014 04:31 AM PDT

In an interview with Leadership newspapers, Daddy Showkey expressed his disappointment at many Nigerian artists who didn't bother to attend Kefee's burial. He also talked about the time he was sick, and how none of his colleagues bothered to see how he was doing. He says he has no friends in the entertainment industry. Find below...
"I was disappointed that artistes did not come to show love to their own. It is not a good thing. The lady died and it is sad for her family. Musicians ought to have showed up and rallied round her people, to show that they care. It was only the gospel musicians that showed up, meaning there is no love in this industry. Nobody cares about you if you drop dead tomorrow. I told you I was away for 3 years because of my spinal cord injury. Nobody came to visit me during that time. No one from my generation of singers came to identify with me and that is bad for a man who has given much to the industry. This makes me think that we don't care about ourselves in this industry. As the Yoruba people say, Oju aaye ni a nse o meaning, na eye service we dey do to oursefu!"he said. Continue

He said that in the industry, he doesn't have any friend
"I don't have a friend oh. This life wetin my eyes don see, no be small thing oh! That experience is enough to make you cut-off, because when they see me with money they associate with Showkey; but when Showkey had a challenge, an accident- no one could call or say we feel your pain. So me, I no get friend. My friends are those in Ajegunle that we can say the truth to ourselves. It is only Pasuma that I can call my friend- he comes to my house anytime and we chat about things" he said.

"I don't have step kids, they are all my kids' Annie Idibia opens up in new interview

Posted: 27 Jul 2014 03:28 AM PDT

In this very revealing interview with Sunday Sun, mother of 2 Annie Idibia opened up about life before the fame and money; how her mother coped after they were abandoned by their father, her acting career, marriage to 2face Idibia, her relationship with his other kids and much more.  Excerpts from the very interesting interview below....
Ordinarily, people would expect to see the pompous wife of a big star like Tuface but that does not seem to be the case with you. You're so humble?
Thanks for the compliment. I am a very playful and down-to-earth person though, there are times I prefer keeping to myself in order to avoid people taking advantage or abusing me. However, I am a very simple person. I am from Eket, Akwa Ibom State. I am from a family of four children; three brothers and myself, the only daughter of the family. My mum and dad divorced 20 years ago. Continue...

Your parents separated 20 years ago. How did it affect you?
My mother bred us from childhood to adulthood because of the divorce. I was almost a tom boy growing up with my brothers. It's heartbreaking when you live with your parents happily and suddenly, they part ways. Sincerely, we were terribly affected emotionally. It was especially tough where it was only our mother that was attending functions in school and taking care of our needs. It was emotionally sapping and my brothers have their own fair share of memories. It affected me so much while in secondary school because I was always sad going home after school hours to see my mother living without my father. But mum tried her best to make life meaningful for us; she is my hero. And I appreciate God for being there for us.

How old were you when your parents divorced?
Maybe, nine or 10. I was in primary school when it all happened and I remember everything but it is irrelevant talking about it now because we have moved on.

Could you talk about the sacrifices you made as a kid to support your mother financially?
I was always running home during lunch break to prepare lunch for my younger brother but unfortunately, we lost him at 15 years of age. It was really tough! I had to assist my mother in her shop which was very close to our house after school. She was also working to make ends meet.

How did your brother die?
We don't like talking about it in the family because we miss him dearly. He was an intelligent and brave boy; he died of tuberculosis.

Where did you grow up?
We lived in Ibadan with our parents when my father was working with Mobil and my mother was a house wife. She remained a house wife until they separated. I was born with a silver spoon but I didn't grow up with it. After their divorce, my mother got a job with Mobil working as a cook to support us. Thereafter, we moved to Jakande Estate, Lekki, Lagos. From there we moved to Thomas Estate, also on the Island. After the entire struggle, God has blessed us tremendously. I am the last child. My eldest brother is married and my elder brother lives in Atlanta; he is also married.

How did that experience shape you?
It made me stronger and independent as a woman. As the only girl, my mother taught me to do domestic chores. Today as a married woman, I have domestic staff but I still cook and do house chores. I started working immediately after I graduated from secondary school at age 15. I worked as a sales girl in a boutique and two other places before I got admission to study, leading up to my diploma. I also worked part time as an undergraduate of Computer Science at the Lagos State University when I was 18-years-old. Thereafter, I got admission into the University of Lagos where I bagged a degree in Theatre Arts. Growing up wasn't easy, my sister. I have never shared this before in the media but I think God wants His name to be exalted in my life.

What is your advice to couples on divorce?
Honestly, divorce is the worst punishment any parent could subject children to because it's the children that will face the consequences of their actions. Divorce shouldn't be considered as an option when couples face-off. It is advisable to settle rather than divorce. Why did you get married if you cannot forgive and reconcile with your partner? I don't wish my kids to pass through my experience regarding divorce. I always use my parents-in-laws as an example and I try to emulate them in my marriage. After all these years, they are still deeply in love with each other. Even at their age, they still enjoy each other's company and that is amazing.

Have you reconciled with your father?
I have reconciled with him. I did seven years ago. Our mother always encouraged us to forgive our father and love him regardless of the past. I have a very good relationship with my father now.

Let's talk about the industry that brought you to limelight. How did you come into Nollywood?
I attended so many auditions after my secondary education and I also did some modelling jobs for a while earning as little as N2000. The highest fee I ever earned was N5000 but I wasn't discouraged. I worked with Dakova and KC Jabari and I also did ushering jobs at events. I was an usher at Queen Onokala's first album launch. I was also second runner-up of Queen of All Nations Beauty Pageant. It was after the beauty pageant that I made my Nollywood debut.

How long have you been in the industry?
I have spent over four years as a professional. I came into Nollywood in 2009. Before then I had featured in minor roles while in the University. After graduation and the birth of my first baby, I got deeply involved in acting.

What do you enjoy most about being an actress?
I love stepping into other people lives, living it and depicting it to the best of my abilities and it's always been a delight.

Have you ever played a role you later regretted?
I wouldn't play it if it's not acceptable to me.

Are you saying that even if you are paid a huge amount of money, you wouldn't play if it's not acceptable?
Sometimes I actually accept scripts because of the character and not the amount involved. I also consider the energy and intellectual ability that the character demands because I love playing roles that challenge my ability and skills. Basically, I act for the passion and not just for the monetary gains.

Have you ever been embarrassed by a fan?
I learned a lot from my husband who became a superstar before my foray into Nollywood. So, mine is a piece of cake. I don't tag them embarrassing because it's a price you have to pay for fame.

How has motherhood been so far?
I enjoy being a mum. God has blessed me with two wonderful kids. It's wonderful though, tasking, stressful and sometimes depressing, especially when you are a working mum. But I try to create time to be with my kids no matter my busy schedule. I make sure I am always involved in my daughter's school activities. It would interest you to know that I am my daughter's lesson teacher. And I must appreciate my lovely mother for making life meaningful for me by teaching me so much; she has been a wonderful mother and grandmother.

What do you enjoy most about being a mother?
I admire watching my little baby bubble with life. Watching my first daughter grow is nothing short of a blessing from God. They give me joy and I celebrate motherhood whenever my daughter calls me mama. It's a wonderful feeling looking at this creatures God has blessed me with; in fact, they are the best things in my life.

You are presently on set, could you tell us about the movie you are working on?
We are working on a movie entitled Perfect Snake. I am actually playing female lead. I love the role because it is one of my most challenging roles. In fact, the character is my direct opposite. She is a girl that doesn't smile and is mean. She is a rich kid who does all her father's dirty deals and is sexually involved with her brother. It's been fun coming on set in the morning and driving home in the middle of the night.

Who is the perfect snake in the movie?
You will find out after watching the movie when it is released; I wouldn't let the cat out of the bag.
There is this popular saying 'no pain, no gain'. Have you had any experience in life that actually made you cry?
I actually cried the day I gave birth to my first child, Isabella. They were tears of joy. I held her and kissed her to appreciate the mercy and grace of God upon my life. And I also cried the day I lost my younger brother. And of course, I cried on my wedding day.

Why did you cry on your wedding day which should be your happiest?
Indeed it was a long journey. We dated for years before we got married on that fateful day, which was my happiest moment in life. My mother was filled with joy seeing her only daughter getting married to her soul mate. In fact, both families were elated.

When did you meet Tuface and how long have you been married?
I met my husband in 1999 and we started dating in 2002. We dated till we got married. Though, there were times we had differences during courtship but the bond we shared and our love for each other took us to the altar. We have been married for over two years and I feel like it's been forever.

Your husband has been linked with rumours concerning women. How do you handle those moments, especially the recent one about him impregnating a banker?
I really don't pay attention since I am married to a man that understands me. In fact, most times we laugh over these rumours. Any time such rumours come up in the media, my husband calls me immediately on the phone asking if I have seen what was written. And I reply that I have and we laugh over it and move on because we know that those rumours will not tear us apart. On the recent rumour about him impregnating a banker, I don't know what they stand to gain with idle gossip. I had just delivered my baby, Olivia. She was barely two months old but we overcame it.

Could you share some of your labour room experiences?
The coming of my first baby was easier but my second baby was not easy. I was screaming and calling on God. I had my babies through caesarean section. I appreciate God but I wish it was through normal delivery. I always remember the pains I had after their delivery because it's not the normal way of giving birth but the major pains that go with CS. However, regardless of the process, I give God all the glory.

Have you ever felt like having your husband present in the labour room?
He was around during the delivery of my first baby though, he was not allowed into the theatre. He was 24 hours late for the delivery of my second baby. I was so angry with him but he apologised and I forgave him.

Which of the rumours published about your husband hit you hardest?
None, I just want gossips to leave us alone to enjoy our blissful lives together. We don't disturb them, why are they disturbing our peace? And I also want to appreciate our fans for being there for us.

Most celebrities' marriages break up. How are you able to enjoy a stable marriage?
I married my friend and we trust, love and respect each other so much. And that has remained the bed rock of our marriage.

Your husband has admitted that you are his African Queen. What actually attracted you to him?
I was very young when we started dating. Honestly, I can't explain what it is but I just want to be around him always and it just grew into what it is today.

Was he your first love?
I wouldn't answer this question but I think so.

Tell me what I want to hear, is he?
(smiles) He is my love.

How does your husband react after watching some of the romantic roles you acted including those where you had to kiss another man?
They are two different things but my husband has asked me not to act in bad movies. I am g lad to express my ability as a professional. And concerning playing romantic roles, my husband always say to me, 'if you have to act a romance scene, you have to do it well or you don't do it at all.'

Are you saying he is not a jealous guy?
(laughter) No. He is actually a very jealous husband.

How are you coping living with your step children?
I don't have step children; they are my kids. They are innocent, smart and adorable kids. We have a good family relationship with our kids in America and Nigeria. Zion has a great sense of humour, he is always attached to his sister, Isabel; they are age mates and they always disagree to agree in love. It's fun watching them stay together whenever they come to their family home. Honestly, we want our children to enjoy their childhood by the grace of God in unity and love. And I really appreciate their mothers for their great understanding and their father, for making our children his priority in life.

Your husband stated in an interview that he is done making kids. Do you still wish to have more kids?
(Smiles) That's funny. God has blessed us with seven children so I think we have enough. But if God blesses us with one more child, who am I to say no.

Are you planning to produce a movie like your colleagues?
I am working towards producing a movie soon but aside that, my NGO would soon be lunched. I am working presently with a colleague and friend, Tana Adelana. Our first project will be in Jakande Estate schools, located in Lekki. The objective is to assist pupils to have a comfortable environment for learning.

Do you also consider acting beyond Nollywood?
I will if the opportunity comes but I don't have American accent and I don't like pretending. If I am given an African woman's role to play, why not? After all, Rita Dominic is now in Hollywood, which is a commendation for Nollywood.

Brothers who forced five friends to have sex with each other before shooting and burying them escape death penalty

Posted: 27 Jul 2014 03:30 AM PDT

The Kansas Supreme Court on Friday July 25th overturned the death sentences of two brothers convicted of killing four friends who were robbed and forced to have sex with each other before being shot to death and left in a snow-covered Wichita field.

The court also struck down three of the four capital murder convictions each against Jonathan Carr (pictured right) and Reginald Carr (pictured left), citing procedural problems at the brothers' joint trial for its decisions. It upheld one capital murder conviction for each of them. Continue...

Jonathan Carr in court during the first day of his murder trial in Sedgwick County District Court, Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, in Wichita, Kansas
Prosecutors said the brothers broke into a Wichita home in December 2000 and forced the five people there to have sex with each other and later to withdraw money from ATMs. Two women were raped repeatedly before all five were taken to a soccer field and shot while they were kneeling. Four of them - 29-year-old Aaron Sander, 27-year-old Brad Heyka, 26-year-old Jason Befort and 25-year-old Heather Muller - died.

One of the women survived a gunshot wound to the head and she ran naked through the snow to seek help. She became a key witness at the brothers' trial on the capital murder convictions.

The killings ended a series of crimes that authorities alleged the Carr brothers committed over nine days in December 2000.

The Kansas Supreme Court ruled 6-1 in overturning the Carr brothers' death sentences because the presiding judge did not hold separate sentencing proceedings for each man.

In overturning most of their capital murder convictions, the majority said the instructions to jurors had been flawed because the judge tied those charges to the rape of the surviving victim, not the deceased ones.

The brothers' cases will return to Sedgwick County District Court for further proceedings
Republican Gov. Sam Brownback and several GOP legislators were immediately critical of the decisions, which involved crimes that were among the most notorious in the state since the 1959 slayings of a western Kansas family that inspired the book In Cold Blood.

The legislators said the ruling shows the court's unwillingness to uphold a death sentence, and the governor said he was stunned.
'They were convicted by a jury of their peers in front of an elected local judge,' Brownback said in a statement.
'Today's ruling unnecessarily reopens wounds of a tragic moment in Wichita's history.'

Heyka's father, Larry Heyka, also expressed disappointment and said he was struggling to make sense of the rulings, which totaled nearly 480 pages.
'Hopefully going forward, we will all understand what these rulings really mean,' said Heyka, who is from Council Grove.

Attorneys for the brothers did not return telephone messages seeking comment.
Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett said he's not sure whether his office will appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, but he promised to continue pursuing death sentences.
Jonathan Carr, now 34, and Reginald Carr, 36, were in their early 20s when the crimes occurred.

Together, they were convicted of 93 counts, including rape, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery.

The state Supreme Court upheld a total of 57 convictions against them.
Most of the overturned convictions involved the allegations of forcing their victims to engage in sex acts.

Happy Sallah to all our Muslim brothers and sisters + GEJ's Sallah message

Posted: 27 Jul 2014 04:22 AM PDT

Hope all our Muslim brothers & sisters have a great celebration. Below is president Jonathan's Sallah message...
I felicitate with all Nigerians, especially our Muslim brothers and sisters on the auspicious occasion of this year's Eid-el-Fitri celebrations .I congratulate all of our countrymen and women who have successfully undertaken the purifying Ramadan fast.
As we celebrate Eid-el-Fitri, it is my hope and prayer that Ramadan's spiritual lessons and the Holy Prophet's teachings of piety, love, justice, fairness, equity, peaceful co-existence with others, tolerance, honesty and dedication to duty will remain with us all for the benefit and greater glory of our dear nation
May the lessons and blessings of the Holy Month also permeate into us all, and positively influence our attitudes towards our fellow countrymen and women, irrespective of their religion or places of origin; and promote greater commitment to the peace, unity and stability of the nation.

Although the observance of the Holy Month was sadly tainted in parts of the country with the continuing atrocities of extremists and terrorists in our midst, I urge all patriotic Nigerians to remain strong and resolute in defence of freedom, unity, law and order, peace, security and progress of the nation.

I feel the pains and anguish of all our compatriots who have experienced the harrowing impact of terrorism unleashed on them by brainwashed and misguided agents of evil and disunity, but we must never throw up our hands in helplessness and despair as the terrorists and purveyors of anarchy want.
Going forward, let us all remain unwaveringly committed to showing solidarity with our Armed Forces and security agencies and giving them the full support they require to prosecute the war against terrorism to a successful conclusion.
I assure all Nigerians, once again, that we are totally committed to winning that war, putting the scourge of terrorism and

insecurity rapidly behind us and giving the fullest possible attention to the urgent task of improving the living conditions of our people in all parts of the country.

We cannot and will not be deterred from our goal of positively transforming our nation into a strong, united, progressive, stable, secure and prosperous nation in which all citizens will live in peace in spite of our immense diversities.
May Almighty Allah continue to bless our nation and all who have successfully undertaken this year's Ramadan Fast.

I wish you all happy and peaceful Eid-el-Fitri celebrations.

Man spends 23years in prison for allegedly failing to bribe policeman

Posted: 26 Jul 2014 02:20 PM PDT

Found this heartbreaking story and decided to share. Find below... (above is Calistus Ike)
A shaft of pain knifed through his facial contours as he recounted the grisly experiences he had in prison for more than 23 years.
Prior to 1989, Calistus Ike had dreamt of becoming a very successful business man.
Little did he know that he was going to spend seven years as an awaiting trial inmate and another 16 years on the death row.
As the first son and bread winner of his family at that time, Ike, had all his dreams quashed after he was sentenced to death following his refusal to pay N200 bribe to the policeman that investigated an allegation against him.
Luck however shone on him when through the intervention of a France- based human right group, Avocats Sans Frontieres, ASFF, also known as 'Lawyers Without Borders France', the Edo state government, pardoned him and approved his release from prison in 2012.

Reliving the harrowing times he had in jail and circumstances that led to his conviction with Saturday Vanguard, this disconsolate erstwhile death row inmate, insisted that he was innocent of the allegation that left him at the mercy of the hang-man, even as he called for a total overhaul of the criminal justice system in Nigeria.

Describing himself as a "lucky-survivor", Ike, who is now in his early fifties, stressed that so many innocent Nigerians are currently languishing in various prison facilities across the federation.
"The unfortunate thing is that some of the people I left in prison did not even have a case-file. Some of them had stayed as 'awaiting-trial' inmates for more than 10 years", he lamented.

Narrating the story of his life, Ike said: "It happened to me in the year 1989. I was resident in Benin, the Edo state capital. There was a man that lived in the same compound with me. His wife had stomach problem and he asked me to lead him to somewhere to collect a root (herbal medicine) for his wife.

We went there about 5pm. After escorting him to the place where he collected the medicine, I returned to my house.

The next day, I went to do my business. I did not know that the same man had engaged police to look for me and the other man that gave him the root, a man I didn't even know. When I heard that police came to look for me, I inquired about the station they came from and went there myself. "I reported myself and asked why they came to look for me.

They told me that there was an allegation that I conspired with the man we collected medicine from his house and broke into my neighbour's house- who was the same man I accompanied to get the roots for his wife- and stole his properties.

I never knew that they had equally arrested the man that gave us the root.
Thereafter, the policeman handling the case insisted that I must write a confessional statement otherwise he would deal with me. I refused to write anything. I told him that I would only narrate the exact thing that happened''.

"It was at that juncture that he started beating me with 'Koboko'. He flogged me mercilessly that day. I was tortured until the D.P.O in charge of the station asked him to stop and just take my statement.

After I gave them my statement, the same policeman that flogged me, came back and said that he could not find any evidence to pin the alleged crime on me. He said that he had concluded all the investigations and found nothing against me.
"However, he said I should give him N200 so that he would drop the case and allow me to go home. Remember, we are talking about 1989. As at that time, that amount was big money to me.

So, I told him I had no such money to give out. I stood my ground that I was innocent of the charge and even asked them to take me to court if indeed they thought that I had a case to answer.
Within two days, the policeman took the matter to court. We went to court, at the Magistrate court, the policeman freed the other man I was accused with and pinned the whole charge on me.

"From the Magistrate court, he took me to the Military Tribunal where the case changed overnight.
From the original allegation of 'burglary and theft', I was charged with armed robbery.Whereas the Policeman and that my compound man whose properties were allegedly stolen, as well as his wife, testified before Tribunal, I had no one to testify for me. I was left with only God and no one else.

"After a long run of the trial, I was convicted and sentenced to death for a crime I never committed or even imagined. I never for once had such dream for my life, but I was condemned to death.Nonetheless, my faith in God never wavered, I kept asking him to vindicate me. I was in death sentence cell in Edo state for over 14 years. After then, I was transferred to Enugu prison.

"One day, I was there, inside the prison with other inmates when information got to me that there were some people from France that were helping inmates in Benin prison. I quickly called my brother and asked him to take my plight to those people, maybe they could help me to regain my freedom.
"By the special grace of God, within three months, I was let loose from the grip of the wicked of this world and I thank God for it. What I however want Nigerians to know is that there is great level of injustice in our judiciary and because of that, many innocent people have died for crimes they never committed.''

"Some of our lawyers are not helping matters. All they are interested in is money. Some cases they know they don't have the capacity to handle they will just force themselves into them and their clients will be condemned and killed.
Before my very eyes, I witnessed executions that took the lives of over 48 young and energetic men and women . It is a painful thing to experience.
I was released in 2012. After I was arrested in 1989, I stayed as awaiting trial inmate for seven years, and stayed on death row for 16 years.
My case did not go up to the Supreme Court. It was tried by the military tribunal so I didn't even have the opportunity to go on appeal.

"My experience in the prison was very traumatic. That place is hell on earth! Some of the prison warders are very wicked- even though there are some good ones too. The bad ones are tormentors. They torment inmates at will.
The food inside there is nothing to write home about. Roofs of some of the cells leak badly when it rains.

Getting good medication is rather a luxury too big to imagine, except in critical cases or upon an order of the court.
In the prison, every inmate is left to his own fate. Inmates are suffering badly even the awaiting trial inmates too.

"It hurts me when I see them on TV claiming that they are reforming the prisons. I am telling you today that they are doing nothing. Anyone that is so convinced that our prisons are better now should volunteer and spend a weekend inside any of our prisons. The hardship inside there is better imagined than experienced.I saw hell!

If the government gets up now and say they are reforming prisons, they are doing nothing! I am saying this because I experienced it for 16 years on the death row".
