Ndani TV's 'Gidi Up' introduces you to the hottest new acts

Posted: 10 Jul 2014 01:38 PM PDT

It would be a real disservice to humanity if the crew member in charge of music selection on Ndani TV's Gidi Up is not forced by presidential decree or dedicated guilt-tripping of his conscience to become a professional DJ and keep us all happy. If that Tajudeen Opebiyi is already a practicing one, it behooves that some form of award or honours be bestowed on him immediately. Continue...

And the reason we are gushing is not just entirely because the song choices are totally off the hook. They are all Nigerian songs, cutting across a number of genres from pop to techno, hip-hop and Afrobeats. Beat that, patriot! From Black Magic's Rainbow matching the establishment shots that open Episode four so beautifully to the rest of the music inserted so tastefully and masterfully like ketchup tattooed on a hotdog, the sound doesn't go wrong for so much as a second.

A personal highlight is where Impostor, that gem of a jam by Aristokrat Records Pucado and Kamar saunters poignantly into the atmosphere of the penthouse where Obi and its' owner are having a telling lunch that is the prologue of a young man-cougar relationship. The song is sensual enough set the mode for the events that follow where words that are left unsaid and subtle looks pass back and forth between the pair. Killer.

18:20 is another. Emmy Gee's Rands & Nairas virtually rolls out the carpets in a grand manner for Obi to bounce out of his boss's office in true Rick Rossesque fashion and its thumping sound is just perfect that giving thanks in appreciation of the work input of the production and editing crew would so not be out of place.

Who can fault the use of that Studio Magic and Ajebutter 22 collaboration – Celebrate in Advance at 19:30 when the gang head out to a dinner to celebrate Tokunbo's incoming good fortune? No one? Thought so!

It is also hard not to notice that the right instrumentals are used in places where the lyrics themselves would particularly make a mess of the song selection if allowed to play on. Take for instance, the scene in one of the episodes where Eki is having a photo shoot at her studio with a model; SDC's Feel Alright is used to this effect as only the DJ Juls-produced beat takes charge.

Throughout the series, it is so easy to note that the catalogue employed in making these choices is as large in depth as it is lovely in execution. Variety is the spice of life and the afterlife and adds an extra layer to every story, including this one.

Made-in-Nigeria brands and products are -let's face it - just not there yet. There is promise but the quality of service doesn't cut it yet. This is of course why it gladdens the heart to see improvements in this regard. Gidi Up undoubtedly has its flaws but it ticks a great deal of boxes all-round, one of them being the music selection. Self-explanatory and clichéd scores and soundtracks are the hallmarks of the archetypal Nollywood production but this series evades the stereotype and is miles ahead.

One wonders for how long this can be kept up. Will the quality wane, flicker and perchance go into deep slumber? Followers of the series will easily wave this pessimism off because the music selection in the first season was similarly fantastic. But this is Nigeria where consistency is a problem, quality has a switch that can be flicked on and off indiscriminately and nothing is guaranteed.

We'll watch and see.

Dear LIB readers: Can you explain my daughter's behaviour?

Posted: 10 Jul 2014 12:41 PM PDT

From a male LIB reader
I just thought sending you this mail could attract responsible responses to my confused state. I am married with three kids, a boy and two daughters. My first daughter is 2+ and have been exhibiting some strange behaviours that is baffling me.
Recently, about a month ago I observed that she comes close to me although all my children are close to me, but this kind of closeness is such that she holds my head with her hands and tries to kiss me on several ocassions.
I try to convince myself that it is a normal hormonal changes going on within her, but I am not convinced yet. Does anyone have a daughter of that age group, and does she behave similarly, can someone advice me on this? Thanks

Okiotor Dafiaghor (a.k.a. Dafphee), the ex-pianist at Rev. Chris Okotie's Household of God Church who took the man of God to court over unpaid earnings, speaks to Sahara TV about his time at the church. Dafiaghor claims Rev Okotie had a lavish relationship with Ms. Roli (Chief Bode George's wife and new NDLEA's Director) which made him finally quit the church.
"About a certain lady, Roli Adeniyi, that came up in the newspapers and said that she used to go out with Rev Chris Okotie. I know that this is true because I used to see things. We used to make excuses for him...like he's not really doing anything with them. You see a lady at 3am in his house and probably they are just doing prayer meeting and he's too man of God for that." He said
He said so much more. Like how Okotie bought Roli (his wife's friend at the time) two cars, rented two shops and a house for her and allegedly broke a few marriages.Watch the video after the cut..

EFCC closes case in trial of FFK over alleged money laundering

Posted: 10 Jul 2014 07:43 AM PDT

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC has closed its case in the trial of former Minister of Aviation and Tourism, Femi Fani-Kayode over a 40-count amended charge on money laundering, Vanguard reports.

At a resumed hearing of the case in a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, counsel to the EFCC in a letter delivered by Mr. Vitalis Ahaotu to the presiding Judge, Justice Rita-Ofili Ajumogobia, the EFCC notified the court of the commission's intention to close the case against the former Minister.

Counsel to Chief Fani-Kayode, Mr Wale Akoni did not object to the letter of closure but however informed the court of his intention to file a no-case submission to the charges against his client. The judge gave Mr Akoni 21 days to file a no case submission and adjourned the case till Oct. 28 for adoption of final written addresses. Continue...

Femi Fani Kayode has been standing trial since December 2008 over a 47-count charge of money laundering which was amended in March 2014 with 7 of the charges dropped. He was also accused of accepting cash payments in the tune of about N100 million during his tenure as Minister of Aviation and Minister of Culture and Tourism, respectively.

Wale Gates makes case for student who killed his father, shares his own story

Posted: 10 Jul 2014 09:04 AM PDT

A few days ago, we heard about a 21 year old Redeemer University student named Tolani Ajayi, who killed his own father. The news shocked us all...because it's unheard of for a child to kill his own parent but UK based comedian Wale Gates says he has little sympathy for the young man because he's been in the boy's shoes and kind of understands what could have pushed him.

Wales shares his own story of the abuse he suffered in the hands of his own father growing up, how he didn't speak to the man for 12 years and how he eventually forgave him. See all that after the cut...

P.S: If you hit your child frequently or even verbally abuse them, you need to stop. They remember when they grow up, and they may never tell you but they carry that resentment for a long time.

Newly completed school hall in Osun state due for commissioning on Friday collapses

Posted: 10 Jul 2014 02:19 AM PDT

A newly completed hall built by the Osun State government inside Ejigbo High School in Ejigbo, Osun state has collapsed. The building collapsed around 6am yesterday July 9th as workers were putting finishing touches to it in order to meet up with the Friday date for the commissioning.

The Police Public Relations Officer for Osun state, Mrs. Folasade Odoro, said the school building collapsed following a heavy wind on Wednesday morning. Two people were injured. Continue...

Osun State governor, Rauf Aregbesola, reacted to the incident via a statement he released through his media aide, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon.
"The Government of the State of Osun regrets to inform members of the public about the suspect incidence of the collapse of the main hall of the newly completed ultra-modern Ejigbo High School.
"Information at the disposal of the government indicates that the main hall which had been completed along with other classrooms of the school came down at about 6am Wednesday after a loud bang.
"As a responsible government, it is too early for us to say what the exact cause of the collapse is until we have full investigations and advice of professionals.
"However, it must be stated here that all necessary quality assurance tests were carried out to ensure structural durability and integrity of the project.
"Engineers from the Osun Ministry of Works and engineers from the Structural Engineering section of the Nigerian Society of Engineers have been dispatched to the site to establish the real cause of this unfortunate incident."

Twin sisters who were set to train as doctors, now in Syria 'training to be killers'

Posted: 10 Jul 2014 12:51 AM PDT

16 year olds Salma (centre left) and Zahra Halane (centre right), who were among the top 20 students at their girls' school in Manchester, left their parents' home in the middle of the night and caught a flight to Turkey, before crossing the border. Police said the pair are thought to have followed their elder brother, who ditched his own 'excellent' academic career to join the ISIS terror group around a year ago. Friends said the twins had appeared to be typical teenagers, pouting for selfies & shopping at Primark - but they are now feared to be training for battle. Pictured left are visitors arriving at the family's home. Continue to read full story...

Twin schoolgirls who followed their jihadi brother to Syria were hard-working students who hoped to train as doctors.

Sixteen-year-olds Salma and Zahra Halane, who last summer achieved 28 GCSEs between them, left their parents' home in the middle of the night and caught a flight to Turkey, before crossing the border.

Police said the pair are thought to have followed their elder brother, who ditched his own 'excellent' academic career to join the ISIS terror group around a year ago.

Friends said the twins had appeared to be typical teenagers, pouting for selfies and shopping at Primark – but they are now feared to be training for battle.
Last night a rebel fighter boasted that he was teaching girls as young as 16 how to fight. Yilmaz, a Dutch national who has been in Syria for two years, told Sky News: 'It's extremely easy to get here. People go on holiday ... they end up in Syria.'
The twins' parents raised the alarm last month, after finding the girls' beds empty and their passports and clothes missing.

A former neighbour said the couple had been 'quite strict', and did not allow the girls to 'mix with other children on the street'. Others recalled that the twins wore headscarves when they were as young as nine. But Rhea Headlam, who sat next to Zahra in primary school, said they were 'just normal teenage girls'.
'I'm really shocked – I used to bump into them at Primark,' she added. 'They were both really clever.'

Last summer Salma achieved 13 GCSEs – 11 of them at grades A* to C – while Zahra passed 15, of which 12 were A*-C. The results put them in the top 10 per cent of their year group at Whalley Range High School for Girls in Manchester.
They went on to study at Connell Sixth Form College, where fellow students said they hoped to follow in the footsteps of their elder sister Hafsa, 25, who is at medical school in Denmark after graduating from Manchester University.
'The twins both have aspirations to become doctors – that is their ambition,' said one. Another claimed it was 'typical' of the girls to head to Syria 'after they had finished term', adding: 'They wouldn't want to mess up their education.

'I'm shocked they have gone. They didn't seem to be radical or extremist in their views.'
It emerged yesterday that the girls' devoutly Muslim Somali refugee parents and their 11 children had been moved from an estate made famous by the TV series Shameless to an upmarket suburb, after telling the council they needed more bedrooms.

They were given a six-bedroom end-terrace despite the protests of the existing tenant. Yesterday the large back and front gardens were strewn with discarded household items and children's plastic toys.

The house's previous resident - a 40-year-old Army heroine who served in Bosnia - said last night she had been booted out of the house by Manchester City Council so the twins and their family could move in.
Former lance corporal Dawn Benjamin told The Sun she had thought the house - her childhood home - would be 'going to a good family'.
She added: 'I lost my life, memories, everything I'd grown up with, to house jihadi wannabes'.
Ms Benjamin and her young son had to move out after they were served with a court order. The council confirmed the house had been needed for a larger family.

Neighbours said the twins' parents were keen to share elements of Somalian culture with them, taking round dishes of traditional delicacies for them to try. The twins' father Ibrahim is understood to teach at a nearby mosque, where leaders this week issued a statement repudiating extremism and opposing violence of all kinds.
Mohammed Shafiq, of the Ramadan Foundation, said the family were moderate Muslims who know all about the dangers of war-torn countries. 'They were desperately unhappy to discover [their son] had gone to Syria, and they thought they were keeping a watchful eye on their other children. Then this happens,' he said.
Sources believe Salma and Zahra were inspired by their brother's transformation into a jihadi fighter, and became radicalised themselves while viewing extremist Islamist material online.

According to police sources, their brother also travelled to the family's native Somalia, where he may have linked up with another Islamist terror group al-Shabab.
A friend told The Sun the brother was known for his ability to recite long passages of the Koran.
Officers are investigating how the girls funded their own trip, over fears they have been bankrolled by jihadi fighters who want them as their wives.

Interesting article by Jason Njoku about not giving up (must read)

Posted: 10 Jul 2014 12:36 AM PDT

Jason Njoku is the founder of iROKO which is worth millions of dollars today. Here he writes about how in 2010 he had less than N10,000 in his account and how not giving up on his dreams changed his life. He shares his story and encourages others to keep fighting. Read below...
"My wife persuaded forced me to do a little spring cleaning this weekend. As I was going through my things rubbish, I came across this old account statement for an iROKO Partners Ltd bank account in London. If you look at the date its 13 July 2010. The statement is for June 2010. That's right. £60.25 paid in. £60.00 (my feeding money) paid out. And an ending balance of £0.25. That's right folks. I literally had £0.25 in my account that's $0.42 or N63. Continue...
Needless to say life has improved somewhat, but as I go about trying to frame this statement, it definitely reminds me of how far in such a short time one's life can improve. It doesn't have to be as dramatic, but improve life can. It also should serve to demonstrate to anyone, anywhere right now toiling away in obscurity on a little project or something no one gives a flying f*** about that as long as you believe in yourself and your project then success (whatever that may mean to you) is or may be just around the corner. All you have to do is find the inner strength to stay in the game.

At this point I had toiled for 6 long years. Fast forward another 4 years and everything has changed. But then I didn't know that. It was only pain.

Founders. Never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever give up. On yourself. You may migrate from project to project and you will never know which one is 'the one'. But one day, someday. Your stars will align.
