Ebola: Catholic Church suspends ‘sign of peace’, Anglican primate suspends handshake Posted: 10 Aug 2014 01:10 PM PDT As the fear of the spread of Ebola sweeps across Nigeria, Catholic churches in Lagos have suspended the 'sign of peace' where the congregation shake hands during mass. While some Anglican churches have suspended handshakes during communion. The Archbishop of Lagos Adewale Martins released a statement yesterday saying that while the handshakes have been suspended, Catholic priests should continue the traditional hand to mouth method of given Holy Communion for now, but asked the priest to make sure their hands don't touch the tongues of the recipient. He also said Holy Water bowls usually placed at the entrance of churches should be discontinued to contain the spread of the virus. In the same vain, the Primate of the Church Of Nigeria Anglican Communion the Most Reverend Nicholas Okoh today suspended shaking of hands during the exchange of the peace. He also suspended the age long mouth method of administering communion. He said this is aimed at preventing the spread of the disease through physical contact.

Michael, who had just graduated high school and hoped to begin college in the fall, was on his way to his grandmother's house in the city of Ferguson when he was gunned down at about 2:15 p.m in the middle of the street. It's still unclear why the police man opened fire but eye-witnesses said Michael was unarmed and his hands up in the air when he was shot after an argument between Michael and the police man. "The police shot again and once my friend felt that shot, he turned around and put his hands in the air," said witness Dorian Johnson. "He started to get down and the officer still approached with his weapon drawn and fired several more shots." Continue... His grandmother said she was driving through her neighborhood Saturday afternoon when she saw her grandson walking a few blocks from her house. After she arrived home minutes later, she heard a commotion and ran outside to see his body on the pavement nearby. Michael's killing triggered outrage among residents who gathered at the scene cursing and shouting "kill the police.". St Louis Police spokesman said they are trying to figure out what led to the shooting, promising a "lengthy investigation." See pics from the protest below...

Is there anything wrong in GEJ standing at the back row? Posted: 10 Aug 2014 06:11 AM PDT A few people online are criticizing President Jonathan for allowing himself to be placed at the back row of this pic taken at the recently concluded US-Africa summit in D.C. Some say its disrespectful as he is the leader of the 'Giant of Africa'. But some argue that it really doesn't matter as long as he was recognized and invited. What do you think? Bitter Kola and Ebola: What Nigerians must know - Health Minister Posted: 10 Aug 2014 05:31 AM PDT Talking about Dr. Maurice Iwu's thesis regarding bitter kola and Ebola (Iwu said Kolanut could cure Ebola - based on research), Nigerian Health Minister Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu said the government is considering making laws to arrest people who make bogus claims to have a cure for Ebola, and said Nigeria needs to work with Dr. Iwu. The Minister said told Vanguard; Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu "One of the things we decided to focus on by setting up that committee is to streamline claims of possible scientific cure, not a situation where pastors and imams claim they can cure Ebola. We might even go to the extent of making laws to arrest people with such bogus claims. We would take every suggestion seriously. About Professor Iwu, we know that quite a number of Nigerians accessed his article through the internet. ContinueWhat Professor Iwu and his research team proved in America is that in the laboratory test-tube – not in an animal or a human being – bitter kola extract was able to hinder the growth of Ebola virus, that it was able to slow it down or kill it. That research was not concluded according to Professor Iwu himself and he says he is disappointed that the research was not taken to its logical conclusion. We need now to work with him and that is why we need him. He is a distinguished world renowned professor of pharmacognosy; and he is someone we value in this country because of his professionalism and working with others; we would be able to put all ideas to the test and see how far we go. This is a serious business. - See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/08/bitter-kola-ebola-nigerians-must-know-health-minister/#sthash.GOlspmAb.dpuf

Findings further revealed that the deceased's husband, one Mr. Kola, popularly known in as Melomelo (how many, how many), had escaped with the twins even as he was reported to have slept in the same room with his late wife, their new twins and other four children the night before the incident. Continue...Narrating the incident to journalists, the landlady of the deceased, who simply identified herself as Mama Aluko, said, "Titilayo was delivered of a set of twins at midnight on August 7. I was with her to help with the children and other things. Her husband, who has not been living with her for some time now, also came around, while her mum too was also around. "Around 8:30 in the evening, her mother told me she would be going for night vigil in her church. So, it was her husband, herself and their new twins that I left before I went to bed that night. "This morning (August 9), I woke up planning whether to prepare Semovita or fufu for Titilayo. It was around that time somebody came to inform me that they couldn't wake Titilayo up and that her husband and the twins had disappeared." Asked about other family members of the couple, the landlady said she didn't know much about them, adding that Kola (the husband) came to rent the apartment about a year earlier, but, however, stopped living with his wife a few months after they moved into the apartment. Confirming the development, the Ekiti State's Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Victor Babayemi, said: "It is a case of homicide and child stealing. Angry students ground activities at FUPRE after a 400l student is shot dead Posted: 10 Aug 2014 04:49 AM PDT Angry students grounded activities at Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun, FUPRE on August 8th by shutting the school gates following the killing of a fellow student, Jimoh Lateef Babatunde, (pictured above) a 400 level Computer Science student. Jimoh, who was due to graduate in the next four months, was said to be leaving his Boys' hostel in Ugbomro around 8pm on Thursday when he was shot dead by gunmen suspected to armed robbers. "It is another case of robbery. We were together discussing sports when he excused us to fetch some items outside. Barely 30 minutes later, he was lying in a pool of his blood, his neck shattered by one of the two gunshots" Akpomedaye Philip, Governor of the isolated off-campus FUPRE Boys Hostel told Vanguard. Continue... "We have been under ceaseless attacks and molestation from criminals within Ugbomro community. The other day it was another male student who survived a shot to the head. The insecurity being faced by students in FUPRE has become unbearable and management is hardly concerned. Imagine a student brutally murdered and the CSO who has failed to secure the lives of students is passing blame, accusing harmless Babatunde of being a cultist. We don't know who the next victim might be." he added.Th following morning, protesting FUPRE students took over the school gates calling for the sack of the Chief Security Officer for failing to provide adequate security for students. Ominigbo Edafe, immediate past Speaker of the SUG said: "What is important is that we stand by the same demand we have highlighted in previous meetings. Ugbomro community is too hostile for FUPRE students. We cannot live there anymore. The way out is for management to provide us alternative hostels where our safety will be guaranteed. We want school-built hostels right in the heart of FUPRE campus. "Part of the challenges too is that the host communities say they are not benefiting enough from the school and they vent their vengeful discontent on students who live around them. The bottom line is that if the critical issues and our demands are not addressed satisfactorily, no form of academic or management activity will be carried out in the school from this moment." He told VanguardJimoh's corpse was taken to Warri Central Hospital morgue.

Unilever Nigeria Launches New Pepsodent Gel Toothpaste Posted: 09 Aug 2014 02:21 PM PDT As parts of efforts to reduce the prevalence of oral health problems in Nigeria, Unilever Nigeria Plc unveiled the New Pepsodent gel toothpaste with over 1000 school children parents, teachers and the EXCO members of the Nigerian Dental Association in attendance. Speaking at the event in Lagos, Brand Building Director, Unilever Nigeria, David Okeme, said in order to let your kids get stronger teeth for the future, it is important to stay healthy and avoid oral care problems. Continue...
"Micro Calcium- helps repair tiny invisible holes before they become cavity. Pro Fluoride Complex - protects teeth for longer." He said He noted that as part of our commitment to support this cause of fighting toothcavity, Unilever is donating over N10 million worth of Pepsodent toothpaste to Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS). According to Guest Speaker from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Prof Adeyemi Olusile: "Tooth Cavity is a bacterial infection that causes removal of mineral irons from the dental enamel and destruction of the hard tissues of the teeth. This is a result of the production of acid by bacterial fermentation of food debris accumulated on the tooth surface." "Bacteria have means of sticking to our mouth, and if we do not brush them properly in the morning and night, they cause holes in our teeth. Therefore, we must brush our mouth twice daily with calcium and fluoride filled toothpaste, like Pepsodent in order to reduce bacteria in our mouth and make it not to smell". Receiving the donation of Pepsodent to NRCS, Engr. Mobolaji Onibudo, Lagos State Branch Chairman of NRCS, said this is a unique product and I'm sure it is going to be widely accepted by the beneficiaries who are the various motherless homes under Nigerian Red Cross Society. And also, we know the level of insurgencies we are facing in the country, we have a lot of internally displaced people, the various camps set up by the Federal Government, and I'm sure if you go up North and you know the level of the challenges they are having in these camps, I'm sure this particular product will find its way there, and would solve the problems of a lot of children even adults alike because when you have your mouth very well cleaned, you would breathe well, and you will have fresh breathe and everything, and of course it transforms to good health and this is very important especially for the internally displaced people in the various camps.
