In a statement issued by the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, the doctors listed "the incursion of Ebola into Nigeria" as a main reason for suspending the strike.

Chinese couple take their son to court to force him to get a job

Posted: 07 Aug 2014 07:33 AM PDT

A Chinese couple have gone to extreme lengths in a bid to force their adult son to get a job - they have taken him to court. Xu Qing, 29, has refused to work ever since leaving university, claiming that
employment is too boring. He has now moved his girlfriend into the home he shares with his parents and demanded he be fed and waited on hand and foot. (pic - the case being heard in court last week)
Initially his mother Xu Hsing cooked and cleaned after her only child at their home in the Chinese capital Beijing.
His father Ku arranged for him to have a job at a friend's company - but Qing quit after just three months saying it was too dull.
He now spends his day sleeping and surfing the internet but managed to meet a girl online, who is also jobless. Continue...
After just one month of dating, she has now moved in with the family - to the despair of Qing's parents.
They laid down an ultimatum, saying he would have to get a job or move out.
But he refused and they said they had no choice other than to take him to court.
They did and were successful after the court ruled that although Qing was their son, at the age of 29 they no longer had an obligation to support him and that as it was their house they could also him to move out.
For 60 days there was stalemate as Qing and his girlfriend refused to budge.
The couple were forced to go back to court and are now applying for an eviction notice to have bailiffs remove their son and his girlfriend from their property.
The case is regarded as a symptom of China's obsession with single children caused by the one child policy.
It is said the controversial government diktat has created a generation of so-called little princes who can do no wrong in their parents' eyes and have never had to work or fend for themselves.

Fashola orders reversal of LASU fees to old charges

Posted: 07 Aug 2014 07:13 AM PDT

Lagos state Governor, Babatunde Fashola, has directed the immediate reversal of the school fees of Lagos State University, LASU, which was increased by the government to what it was as far back as 2011.

Governor Fashola gave the directive today August 7th at the convocation programme of LASU which held earlier today at the LASU Ojo campus ground.

The reversal comes after months of protests by students and lecturers of the university. Continue...

The Lagos State Government had in 2011 increased the fees from N25,000 to N198,000 for humanities & education, while medical students were to pay N350, 000. After the protests, the state government approved a reduction by 34 to 60%, a decision which was refused by the students.

That reduction would have seen students pay between N76, 750 and N158, 250 depending on the faculty and year of study.

Edward Osim talks about why he married Pres. Jonathan's daughter

Posted: 07 Aug 2014 05:49 AM PDT

Godswill Osim Edward, the husband of President Jonathan's daughter Faith Sakwe, has opened up for the first time on why he married her. Speaking with Ovation magazine, Edward said;
"What struck me was the humility of her parents, especially her dad. Both of them do not despise people and do not judge you based on your background. When I got to know her background, then I realized that indeed she was from a good home for her to have kept a low profile in school. I could see that she was indeed a replica of her parents. That is rare these days" he said
He went further to say that as a young man he knew he would be great in life and so was in search of a homely woman who would help him manage the home front and raise God fearing kids. He says in Faith he found that trait. Continue to read what Faith had to say about her husband...

Godswill talks about his love for faith
I can't completely describe how I feel but I can tell you the various definitions of the word love can't completely define our relationship in its entirety. It's depth and experience and the utter completeness we find in each other. What I felt then and the way I feel now supersedes any adjective that qualifies love"
Faith talks about why she fell in love and married Godswill
"I admire his ambition, he's a purpose driven young man who works very hard in his bid to ensure a great future but yet he's very romantic and knows how to care very much for me. He's soft and gentle-natured, yet vibrant and disciplined...and it has been so many years yet aspect of his personality still fascinate me. I never told him who I was and where I was coming from. I went into the university as a different person because I wanted real friends, people who would relate with him based on who I really am and not because of where I am coming from. I went there on a long profile. It took about two years for him to get to know who I really was.
The couple got married in April 12th in Abuja

How brother of EastEnders actress murdered and chopped her body into pieces

Posted: 07 Aug 2014 05:46 AM PDT

On March 1st 2012, former EastEnders actress Gemma McCluskie, 29, disappeared from her home. About 10 days later, it was discovered that her own older brother, Tony McCluskie (pictured with her above) killed her after an argument at the home they shared, chopped up her body, put the body parts in a suitcase and dumped her in the canal. Their older brother talks about the incident for the first time since it happened.
As Danny McCluskie watched the grainy CCTV footage his world crumbled. It showed the unthinkable, the one thing every part of him had screamed could not be possible. His brother Tony carrying a heavy suitcase containing the mutilated body parts of their beloved baby sister Gemma.
The footage proved beyond doubt that Tony had killed the former EastEnders actress in cold blood, chopped her up then disposed of her like putting out the trash.
For Danny one thing made it even more incomprehensible – Tony had put his arms around him when Gemma disappeared and assuring him they would keep looking.
Danny with Gemma
"When I look back at it now I just think, you absolute scumbag, you doing that, you had us on the runabout, looking for our sister, you knew full well what you'd done to her," says Danny, 39, speaking in depth for the first time since the 2012 murder.
"They showed me that bit of evidence. That just persuaded it for me and I went mad. He's a monster for what he done to my little sister."
Tony was mostly unemployed, drifting between building jobs and cleaning windows. He was a heavy cannabis user, smoking strong skunk "from morning until night".

On March 1 Gemma vanished, prompting a police search. Two days later her butchered torso was found in the capital's Regent's Canal. Her limbs, in bin bags, were found a week later. Although her head remained missing for six months, she was identifiable from a tattoo on her back.

There was no reason to suspect Tony. He may have been dope-addled but his family had never known him to be violent. Psychologists now believe he was jealous of Gemma's success, but at the time no one believed him capable of murder.

In the early days he joined in the search, comforting Danny and their separated parents, dad Anthony and mum Pauline.

But the sick truth was that he had killed her after a bitter argument. In his drug-fuelled haze he had gone to sleep and let the bath overflow. It was the last straw for Gemma, who told him to get out of the family home.

Then she went to see their mother in hospital, leaving Tony to stew. She returned to find him in a murderous rage. Still high on drugs, he hit her over the head with a blunt object, fracturing her skull in three places with at least two heavy blows. She died from a bleed to the brain.
Then, clinically and coldly, he tried to chop up his sister's body with a knife. When that failed went out for a meat cleaver, rolls of bin liners and cleaning chemicals.

Killer Tony
The next morning, with the body still in the house, he began a cover up, texting his girlfriend: "Morning, sorry crashed out last night. Woke up too late to get back to you. Feeling a bit better today."
He even sent a text to his dead sister saying he had been to visit their mum.
He wrote: "Hi Gem, letting you know I'm at the hospital. Mum is doing really good and the doctors are pleased with her. Going to look at the throat and swallowing today. Love ya xx."
He had never once told Gemma he loved her in a message before.

Later that night that he stuffed her mangled body into a suitcase, called a cab and dumped her in the canal.

Brother Danny says: "He took her life away. She didn't even hit 30 years old, she didn't get married, she didn't have kids, he took all that away from her."

When Tony told the family Gemma hadn't come home they assumed she was staying with a friend. Danny recalls: "But on the Sunday morning me and a friend met up with Tony and got some pictures developed of Gemma. We took them down to Bethnal Green Police Station."

Speaking on tonight's Channel 5 crime documentary Countdown to Murder, he recalls it was difficult to get sense out of Tony. "But I just thought it was just him just stoned out of his nut again," he says.
Increasingly worried, the family stepped distributed photos and posters and Tony joined in. But two days later police found the first body part in the canal.

Tony McCluskie dragging a large bag into the boot of a taxi
Danny recalls Tony's reaction. "Out of nowhere he walks in and puts his arms round us and he starts saying, please don't let it be Gemma. I'll never forget it."
But their sister was immediately identifiable because of her tattoo.
"That broke me," says Danny. "I turned round and went to the police officer, I said, 'You'd better catch whoever did this'. And he kept saying to me, 'I promise, we'll catch him, we'll catch him'."

It was left to Danny to tell their mother in a moment that still haunts him.
"I ended up breaking down, crying. I was just overwhelmed. I've just found out it was my sister and now I've had to go and break the news to my mother.
"She's laying there in hospital, you know, she's just had a big operation."

Loyal Danny refused to believe Tony had anything to do with it, even when police questioned him for a second time. "I said to him, you look me in the eye and you put your hand on your heart you ain't done this to my sister?" he recalls. "And he just said to me, 'The police are fitting me up'.
My head was all over the place, you know. It was like, this ain't right. I phoned the police and I said to them, 'You'd better show me some evidence it's him, otherwise he's in that jail, he's in that jail suffering'."

The damning CCTV showing McCluskie putting the heavy suitcase in the back of a minicab was all the evidence anyone needed. Ten days after her disappearance Tony was charged with Gemma's murder.
Danny says he felt only one thing on seeing his brother in the dock. "I just thought, I wanna smash his face in. Because he was guilty," he says.

Too early to send experimental Ebola drug to Africa – Obama says

Posted: 07 Aug 2014 02:35 AM PDT

US President, Barack Obama said yesterday August 6th that it's too early to send the unapproved experimental drug, Zmapp serum to Africa where the outbreak of the Ebola virus has recorded more deaths and threatens human existence.

Zmapp serum has proven to be effective in treating Ebola cases as two American doctor infected with the virus in Liberia are currently being treated in the US and are said to have improved after the use of the drug. Continue...

According to AFP, President Obama suggested that affected African countries should focus more on building strong public infrastructures.
"I think we have to let the scientist guide us. And I don't think all the information is in on whether this drug is helpful".
On whether he would help fast track the approval of the drug should medical experts conclude that the drug is effective, President Obama said;
"I think it's premature for me to say that because I don't have enough information. I don't have enough data right now to offer an opinion on that."
While stressing that the deadly virus is not airborne, Obama said
"the countries affected are the first to admit that what's happened here is the public health systems have been overwhelmed. They weren't able to identify and then isolate cases quickly enough. As a consequence, it spread more rapidly than has been typical with the periodic Ebola outbreaks that occurred previously."
He said the US is currently working with their European partners as well as the World Health Organization to provide resources to contain the virus.

Must read: US State Department Ebola Alert

Posted: 07 Aug 2014 03:37 AM PDT

If you want to know more about the Ebola virus, then read this alert from the US Embassy here in Nigeria ...
In order to help our Embassy Community better understand some of the key points about the Ebola virus we have consulted with our medical specialists at the U S State Department and assembled this list of bullet points worded in plain language for easy comprehension. Our medical specialists remind everyone that they should be following the guideline from the center for Disease Control and the World Health Organisation.
• The suspected reservoirs for Ebola are fruit bats.
• Transmission to humans is thought to originate from infected bats or primates that have become infected by bats.
• Undercooked infected bat and primate (bush) meat transmits the virus to humans.
