Jim Iyke Speaks on Ebola

Posted: 05 Aug 2014 12:28 PM PDT

About a week after he fled Liberia over fears of contracting the Ebola virus, actor Jim Iyke has released a statement on the matter. Find it below...

May I humbly apologize if my comments on Ebola – based on fear – were taken out of context. The last thing I wanted to do was to alarm anyone.

"My heart goes out to all the families who have been affected by the Ebola virus – those who have lost their lives or loved ones, those who are still bravely fighting the disease and all of the communities who are battling to keep the infection under control. You are all in my prayers". Continue..

"As I travel constantly across continents, most recently USA, Senegal, Liberia, Ghana, Gambia, I have been screened where and when necessary along with the other passengers and I believe it is the responsibility of every citizen to be vigilant and help contain the outbreak by following the advice of the local and international medical professionals and government officials".

Nasarawa impeachment fails as panel dismisses all charges against ‎the Governor

Posted: 05 Aug 2014 10:05 AM PDT

The impeachment process against the Nasarawa state Governor, Umaru Al-Makura suffered a setback today August 5th as the 7-man panel of inquiry set up by the state Chief Judge, Suleiman Dikko to investigate all 16 charges of gross misconduct leveled against the governor by the state lawmakers was dismissed.

The panel of inquiry yesterday Monday August 4th listened to the state governor who responded to all the allegations leveled against him. The panel thereafter invited the lawmakers to come forward with evidence of gross misconduct by the state Governor but they however declined the invitation, stating that the committee was unconstitutional as most of the members were card carrying members of political parties which is against the constitution of any legal panel of inquiry.

The Assembly members however made a U-turn this morning, sending a legal team led by Mr. Ocha Ulegede to represent them at the panel. The legal team presented a letter of protest written by the lawmakers to the panel, arguing that some members of the panel had political affiliations and that their appointments into the panel of enquiry negates the provision of Section 188 in the composition of the panel.
"Section 188 of the constitution spelt out clearly how the panel should be composed. They are three fundamental issues among which is that member of the panel cannot be a card carrying member of a political party. They cannot hold government appointment and that the panel does not have the power to set the rules of proceeding guiding the sitting".
After listening to their presentation, the panel went into a recess and upon resumption, announced the dismissal of all 16 charges earlier leveled against the Governor.

Nigeria military reacts to Amnesty Int'l video of Human Rights abuse by Nigerian soldiers

Posted: 05 Aug 2014 09:46 AM PDT

A few hours ago, Amnesty International released a gruesome video on its YouTube channel claiming Nigerian soldiers are involved in war crimes. Amnesty International wrote alongside the video;
Gruesome video footage gathered by Amnesty International provide fresh evidence of war crimes, including extrajudicial executions, and other serious human rights violations being carried out in northern Nigeria as the fight by the military against Boko Haram and other armed groups intensifies.
The footage, obtained from numerous sources during a recent trip to Borno state, reveals graphic evidence of multiple war crimes being carried out in Nigeria.
It includes horrific images of detainees having their throats slit one by one and dumped in mass graves by men who appear to be members of the Nigerian military and the "Civilian Joint Task Force" (CJTF), state-sponsored militias. It also shows the aftermath of a Boko Haram raid on a village in which the armed group killed nearly 100 people and destroyed or badly damaged scores of homes and other buildings.
The Nigerian military has reacted to the video via its Defence Information Director, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade. The military say they plan to investigate the video. Find the statement after the cut...

INVESTIGATING AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL VIDEO ALLEGATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSE BY NIGERIAN MILITARY

Gentlemen of the Press,

Welcome to this press briefing which was compelled by the urgent need to clarify some developments arising from our counter-terrorism operations in the country.

The Nigerian military welcomes the interest being shown by international bodies and civil society groups on the observance of Human Rights in all aspects of ongoing counter terrorism campaign in Nigeria.  Despite the highly challenging and peculiar nature of the variables in the operations, the importance of accountability for all actions has remained paramount.  The Armed Forces of Nigeria is conscious of the nation's obligation to observe all rules, regulations and commitments in all activities, and wishes to reassure the international community, bodies and citizens that it will not encourage or condone any form of violation.

It is expedient to particularly address the recent allegation of gross Human Rights abuses leveled against the military by the Amnesty International and those circulating video footage purportedly showing Nigerian military carrying out extra-judicial killing of suspected terrorists.

For the records, we must unequivocally state that the Nigerian military takes the issue of Human Rights seriously and will never condone any proven case of abuse by its personnel. Military authorities are deeply concerned about the set of video footage being circulated and which unfortunately has also become reference data for Amnesty International in its report. Much as the scenes depicted in these videos are alien to our operations and doctrines, it has to be investigated to ensure that such practices have not crept, surreptitiously into the system all to the detriment of expectations, in line with best practices to which the nation's military has committed itself.

The Defence Headquarters considers these allegations too grievous to be associated with Nigerian troops, considering the doctrinal and operational contents of the training imparted to personnel on a continuous basis; emphasizing the importance of respect for Human Rights and dignity of human person as well as observance of humanitarian laws.  Rather, the scenes in that video clip clearly depict a pattern consistent with the atrocious operations of the terrorists.

Notwithstanding the cases of impersonations that have pervaded the counter terrorism operations in Nigeria and many other related issues which cast doubts on the claims made in the video, the Defence Headquarters views those grave allegations very seriously, more so as it borders on the integrity of the ongoing counter-terrorism operation, which must be sustained in the interest of our national survival.

Consequently, the Defence Headquarters in addition to the already existing Joint Investigation Team (JIT) has constituted a team of senior officers and legal cum forensic experts to study the video footage and the resultant allegations of infractions in order to ascertain the veracity of the claims with a view to identifying those behind such acts.  This will further determine and stimulate necessary legal action against any personnel or anyone found culpable in accordance with the provisions of the law.

You will recall that a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) was earlier constituted based on previous allegations of human rights abuse.  The JIT is still in place and have regularly conducted visits to detention facilities.  It is currently on tour of some of such facilities across the country.  The JIT has also regularly forwarded names of those suspects who are culpable to the Ministry of Justice for prosecution.  An additional list is currently being compiled to facilitate the decongestion of detention facilities.

These attempts at protecting the rights of detained terror suspects categorically point to the fact that as a professional institution with thorough-bred officers and men, the Nigerian military cannot be party to such degree of savagery, as portrayed in the video footage available to Amnesty International. The Nigerian military has over the years demonstrated a pedigree devoid of such acts in several operational theatres in and out of the country.  There is no reason why this should change at this stage of our national life.

Without mincing words, the Nigerian Armed Forces cannot condone any action or inaction that tramples on the right to life of any Nigerian. The ultimate objective of Nigeria's counter-terrorism operation is the complete cessation of the heinous and barbaric activities of the terrorists and to stamp out every vestige of terrorism in our country with the application of international best practices in such operations. It will, therefore, be absurd for the Nigerian Armed Forces as an institution to perpetrate such unprofessional acts in the manner and level depicted in that video as alleged by Amnesty International. Respect for the sanctity of life is  always boldly emphasized in our doctrinal trainings. Indeed, that level of barbarism and impunity has no place in the Nigerian military. It must thus be reiterated that the Nigerian military is a very well organized professional body of troops whose conducts in war and peace times are guided comprehensively by law.

We assure Nigerians and indeed the international community that the Nigerian Armed Forces recognizes the concern of Amnesty International as well as other similar bodies and therefore remains committed to the observance of the rules of engagement and human rights in its counter-terrorism operations.

Earthquake hits Johannesburg, South Africa, 1 killed

Posted: 05 Aug 2014 06:49 AM PDT

A 5.3 earthquake this morning August 5th shook buildings in Johannesburg and surrounding areas.. killing one person and injuring at least 3 people. The tremor which lasted just one minute reportedly broke glasses, cracked walls and aftershocks were felt by many.

According to Werner Vermaak, a spokesman for emergency responders, at least one person was killed and three people injured. The man was reportedly killed when a wall of a disused mining building fell on him in the Orkney area of Johannesburg, which is where the quake was centred.

The other three people were hurt when the quake damaged a training center at a mine, said Phoka Sefali, a receptionist at a hospital in Orkney. "The roof fell on them, but they haven't got serious injuries," he told Associated Press.

The quake was also felt in Pretoria and Hartbeespoort, a nearby resort town.

Pic on the left is an alleged female suicide bomber but I can't verify that she's any of the ones that blew herself up during an attack in Kano last week....and the pic on the right is one of the missing Chibok girls. You know how some sources have fingered Chibok girls as the suicide bombers? (read here) though the Coordinator of the National Information Centre, Mr. Mike Omeri, has denied the girls involvement in the attacks....but it makes you wonder...the resemblance is strong but hopefully they are two totally different women.

"We are starving & dying" - Bayelsa students in Russia say they've not received stipends in 14 months

Posted: 05 Aug 2014 06:05 AM PDT

24 medical students from Bayelsa state who are currently in Russia on scholarship from the Bayelsa state government yesterday August 4th held a protest in Kursk, Russia where they cried out over the non payment of their scholarship allowance in the last 14 months by the Bayelsa state Scholarship Board.

During the protest, the students said for the past 14 months, they have not received their allowances for books, medicals and even for winter clothing and coats for the 20 degree Kursk winter. Continue

They say several letters written by them to the Bayelsa state scholarship board, the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, the Governor of Bayelsa state, the Ministry of Education, and the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State have not yielded any result. They alleged that were actually threatened by the chairman of the Bayelsa State Scholarship Board, Evang. Hon. Foster Ogola, that they would be sent home if they continue to protest or complain.

The students in the video posted by Sahara Reporters said since they have been abandoned by their state government, they have tried working on farms and other places in a bid to make money for their upkeep but were arrested by the Russian police who said their Visa's do not permit them to work. They say as it stands now, they are likely not to resume for the next session in September since their fees have not been paid.

One of the students Amadanyo Adebapreye who spoke with Sahara reporters said
"For a very long time now we have been going through really difficult financial situations and mentally challenging conditions due to non-payment of our tuition fees and 14 months without stipends. We have also tried to reach our state through the embassy of Nigeria in Moscow twice, first in February 2014, and just recently, July 14, 2014." he said.
The Nigerian Embassy in Moscow had tried to contact the state behalf of the students several times, but grew frustrated with the poor reception from the Bayelsa government.

Robbery suspects narrates how his brother recruited him into robbery

Posted: 05 Aug 2014 05:16 AM PDT

20-year-old Morgan Udama, a member of a 4-man robbery gang arrested yesterday August 4th by police officers attached to Okota Isolo Police Station in Lagos, while confessing, said he was recruited into criminal life by his own older brother, Oche, who is the leader of the robbery gang.

Morgan, a native of Oju in Benue State said he came into Lagos last week Monday July 28th to live with his brother who had promised him a better job which unknown to him was armed robbery
"I finished Senior Secondary School 3 (SSS3) in 2010 at Otupo, after which I was riding commercial motorcycle (Okada) before my brother, Oche, phoned me to come to Lagos, pledging that he would find me a better work that would fetch me enough saving for my university education. He also told me he was living in a three-bedroom flat, unknown to me that the one-room apartment he inhabited with his elder brother belonged to the latter. When I arrived last Monday, he asked me to follow him to take up an employment. When we got there, he snatched a woman's car with pistol. I was surprised. When I asked him if robbery was the work he found for me, he said "yes," assuring that very soon, I would be counting millions of naira. The mistake I made was that I still entered the snatched car. I should have left them because I was standing at a very good distance. But I feared that people at the scene might later lynch me if I did not follow them."
Morgan and the other gang members - Suleiman Abdullahi, 23, from Bida, Niger State; Samson Oyebanji, 23, from Oro in Kwara State and John Oche, 26, his brother, were arrested following a tip off.

According to the police, the gang had on Saturday night August 2nd snatched a Honda car belonging to one woman at Gbagada General Hospital Junction, Gbagada, Lagos and afterwards drove the car to an estate in Okota Isolo area.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Okota Isolo Police Station, CSP Adamu Ibrahim got wind of their presence in his territory and he immediately mobilized his men to trace them. On sighting the police men, the robbers sped off towards the Ire-Akari Estate, parked the car and took to their heels.

They were all eventually arrested at different locations in and outside the estate.

Oche, the brother to Morgan and a commercial driver who runs the Oshodi-Ajah route said his brother was lying, saying Morgan was a big criminal who ran to Lagos after committing a crime in Otukpo Benue state.
"My role was to drive the snatched car out of the robbery scene. My brother (Morgan) is a big liar. I did not invite him to Lagos. He committed a serious offence in Otrupo and ran to Lagos," he said.
Suleiman one of the robbers said Oche was the owner of the pistol used in the operation, adding: "We did not shoot the woman; we just collected her Honda car." he said

23 year old Kay-Ann Morris (pictured right) has been arrested and charged with the murder of her 7 year old niece, Shanay Rihanna Walker (pictured left), who was found dead around 5.10am at her flat in Bestwood, Nottingham last Thursday July 31st. Prosecutors believe Kay-Ann attacked and battered Shanay late the previous night over reasons she's yet to give. The little girl had been staying with her aunt while her mum traveled out for business.

When she appeared in court two days ago for her hearing, which was attended my family members including the little girl's mother, the murder suspect shook, sobbed and covered her face with her hands asking for forgiveness. She was remanded into custody to appear at Nottingham Crown Court later today.

Tunde Obe's advice to Nigerian celebs who live above their means

Posted: 05 Aug 2014 04:06 AM PDT

In a recent interview with Encomium magazine, music artist Tunde Obe said any artist who owns a car that the quarter of its cost price isn't in their account, is a failure. He made the statement when he was asked what his advise is to artists who pay millions to live in rented apartments.
"When Wunmi and I started, we could have afforded to rent an apartment on the Island considering the kind of money we were making that time but we were living in Gowon Estate, Ipaja, Lagos where we paid minimal rent so we can save for our basic needs. It wasn't a day's journey. Many artiste don't get it right. You are driving a car you don't have quarter of its total cost in your account, you are a failure. My advise is that they should not live above their means or income. And those who are doing very well now should invest wisely because no condition is permanent" he said
