Graphic pics: Executed ISIS fighters lined up in the ruins of border town of Kobane

Posted: 30 Jan 2015 12:50 PM PST

Kurdish fighters killed more than 20 ISIS militants during continued fighting in the villages around Kobane which was liberated earlier this week after months of bitter street fighting. In one village, a Kurd was today pictured standing over the bodies of Islamic extremists after they were killed in Halimce, a village east of the town...

Kurdish forces recaptured the town on January 26 in a symbolic blow to the jihadists who have seized large swathes of territory in their onslaught across Syria and Iraq. But the town is now characterised by demolished buildings, with heavily armed fighters roaming otherwise deserted, rubble-strewn streets.

Although their town has been liberated, thousands of residents are now settling into Turkey's newest refugee camp for an indefinite stay and have been warned not to return until the area has been fully secured. (Courtesy - UK Daily Mail). See the photos below...

Taribo West, Waje, Omawumi, others watch as football triumphs in Malta Guinness Game On

Posted: 30 Jan 2015 11:50 AM PST

All good things come to an end and so it was with the first season of Game On, the Malta Guinness-powered reality series to find Naijas' true passion. The thrilling show kicked off with an opening round of jokes and banter by humour merchants, Owen Gee and Lepacious Bose who after getting the audience in stitches handed over to another king of comedy Gordons, the official; host of the night.

Lanre and Amokachi for the final time had the opportunity to defend their passions in one minute before a recap of memories of the contestants in the house and on tasks.

Without much ado the run way was lit and came to life with the fashion team putting their best foot forward to present an amazing show on this grand finale, the football team wouldn't be left behind as they blew the audience away with a football inspired dance piece so good musician Waje couldn't but score them a 8 over ten when asked what she thought of their performance. Noble Igwe rooting for the fashion team believed they scored 9/10. Mind-blowing performances by delectable R&B songstress, Niyola and Alobam crooner, Phyno got the entire audience rising to their feet, singing and dancing along and breaking into applause for the rapper when he was done.

The moment of truth came and Naijas true passion was finally unveiled as Olumide Ajibolade was declared final winner over Henrietta with Team Football winning 52% of the votes to Team Fashion's 48% in the outcome of voting by Nigerians on Facebook and by SMSes across the nation.
Shocked Olumide broke into prayers as he beamed with joy and called his family to break the news in 6 words "tell them say I don win", the crowd erupted into laughter and applause.

Uche Onwudiwe, the Marketing Manager of Malta Guinness said "we are glad to have been the umpires in finding Naijas true passion. People have always assumed it was football and really the fashion industry is an exciting one plus they gave a good fight on this one but football came out tops with a narrow margin. However, whichever passion it was, the Malta Guinness brand purpose is all about helping the everyday Nigerians get ready for that big break that is all around us either by nourishing them with goodness and vitality or helping them with rare opportunities like this one".

Reacting to his win of the grand prize which is a trip to England for a series of trainings and coaching classes and a sum of two million Naira cash, Olumide said they say Malta Guinness fuels the passion of Naija, I am a testimony! Our lifes are changed forever and I am deeply grateful to Malta Guinness, my team captain Daniel Amokachi, our rival captain Mrs Lanre Da Silva, all other contestants and the almighty God.

Celebrating the win on this grand night with the contestants were a list of celebrities that includes football legend, Taribo West; Rapper Phyno, songstress and vocalist, Waje and Omawumi; media personalities Joseph Benjamin, Adams Ibrahim and Noble Igwe , DJ Xclusive, amongst others.

By the win, Nigerians have shown that football is the superior passion in the country and Malta Guinness has helped to fuel the passion of Coach Olumide Ajibolade.

Nigerian transgender man talks about the joy & danger of living his truth

Posted: 30 Jan 2015 11:32 AM PST

He used to be a woman. Born in Lagos Nigeria. Now living in the US as Rizi Xavier Timane, a man. In an interview with Ebony, he reflects on his journey to living his truth, and the burden that comes with doing it in a country (US) that doesn't value 'Black men'.
I was born in Lagos, Nigeria, and I was assigned the female gender at birth. Both of these facts amounted to one thing: I had no power, no respect, and no privilege, nor would I have much of any of these throughout my life. Add in that I came from a less than wealthy family and was, for all intents and purposes, a lesbian, and I became a truly invisible human being; when I wasn't being ridiculed or abused, I basically did not exist.
I say "for all intents and purposes" because for as long as I can remember, I never thought of myself as a girl. Though I didn't know what to call it as a young child—I had no idea there even was a name for what I felt until I was eight years old, when two friends saw a transgender person on an American talk show and told me about it—I knew I was different. I felt how the boys I knew looked: masculine and tough, not feminine and delicate like my girl friends. I preferred pants to dresses, speaking my mind over being quiet and demure, and roughhousing in the dirt was infinitely more compelling playing dress-up with my mother's clothes.

Still, this gave me no status in the male-driven, patriarchal Nigerian society. And I grew up thinking this was my station in life: to be misunderstood and miserable, trapped in a body I did not feel was my own and stuck in a country that was homophobic, transphobic, sexist, and hyper-religious. When I told my family about how I felt, they told me to keep quiet. My mother and her church friends repeatedly performed exorcisms on me, trying to rid me of the demons that had made me what I was.

Every day between the ages of eight and twelve, I got down on my knees and prayed that God would change me into the boy I knew I was inside. When that didn't work, I tried running away from how I felt, turning later in life to drugs and alcohol and battling severe depression along with my gender dysphoria. I resigned myself to identifying as a Black lesbian for the rest of my life and to all the cultural bias and discrimination that comes with it, particularly in my country of origin, where being gay or lesbian can lead to imprisonment.

Eventually, through a long and difficult process of self-realization, I came to see that I did have some choice in the matter of how I presented my gender identity to the world. That I wasn't tied to that female body and its attendant dearth of cultural value. Today, after twenty surgical procedures plus ongoing hormonal treatments, I can proudly say that I am completely male inside and out. No longer am I the scared child living in an oppressive nation or the adult going through the motions in a life that was not my own. I am now a heterosexual man living in the United States and enjoying all the societal respect and privilege I'd missed out on for so long, when I was not able to express my authentic self.

As a man, I enjoy a higher status than I did when I lived as a woman—people listen to me when I speak and automatically value my opinions; I no longer feel meek and subservient, as I believed I was supposed to be. Of course, there are other challenges now that I am living in my truth. As a Black man, however, I constantly feel like I have a target on my back--like I am the focal point of America's most vehement hatred right now. I know that I could lose this life I've worked so hard to build in an instant—another Michael Brown, another John Crawford, another Eric Garner. Black teen boys are twenty-one times more likely than their White peers to be killed by police and the stats aren't much better when you turn 21. One in three of us can expect to go to prison in our lifetime. Whenever I leave my house now, my wife reminds me to keep both hands on the steering wheel if a cop pulls me over, so he doesn't think I'm reaching for a gun. While I don't dismiss the tragic cases of police violence against Black women, it's not lost on me that she didn't say this when I presented as a woman.

Overall I feel that much of my struggle as a transgender individual is behind me. But as a Black man, my journey has just begun. This is not exactly the life I signed up for. Not that I thought living as a man would be one nonstop party, but I guess we don't realize how serious a situation can be until we live through it. Still, I'm grateful; despite the trials of being a Black male in America, I am finally comfortable in my skin, and that alone brings me a sense of personal power.

Buhari was never stoned in Lagos - APC

Posted: 30 Jan 2015 11:13 AM PST

Press release from APC regarding the alleged stoning of Buhari at his Lagos rally today...
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has denied the concocted story by former Minister of State for Defence Musiliu Obanikoro that the party's presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, was pelted with stone during the party's rally in Lagos, saying a lie has never worn a bolder face.
In a statement issued in Lagos on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said Gen. Buhari and other top leaders of the APC rode in a open bus from the Palace of the Oba of Lagos to the Teslim Balogun Stadium venue of the rally, to great cheers from Lagosians who lined the route.

''Not once was he pelted with stone during the almost two-hour ride. It is obvious that those who were paid by Mr. Obanikoro to stone the General failed to deliver. We therefore urge him to seek a refund of whatever money he paid to his hired hands to pelt Gen. Buhari with stones,'' it said.

APC said Obanikoro's statement on an imaginary attack on Gen. Buhari in Lagos must be his own way of saying 'thank you' to his masters for nominating him as Minister on Friday, as his reward for ceding the gubernatorial ticket he claimed to have won to Jimi Agbaje.

The party thanked the good people of Lagos for turning out in unprecedented numbers to welcome Gen. Buhari to Lagos, saying the Centre of Excellence has never witnessed such a huge and cheery crowd.

50cent's ex-girlfriend accuses him of abuse after he mocks her on instagram

So here's what happened. A few days ago, MTO did a post on one of 50 Cent's former girlfriends, named Holly. When the rapper saw the post, he reposted it on his instagram labeling her community Puzzy. When Holly saw what 50cent put on instagram, she got into a nasty fight with him and made some shocking claims. She said 50 Cent physically assaulted. When some followers didn't believe her, Holly then posted messages between herself and 50 Cent where she threatened to release pictures of her battered body. See it after the cut...

Suge Knight arrested after killing friend in Hit and Run

Posted: 30 Jan 2015 06:21 AM PST

Notorious former music exec Suge Knight has been arrested after fatally running down a friend on the set of the movie, 'Straight Outta Compton' after getting into a fight with security. He reportedly then backed up over the men he hit as he fled the scene. Full report from TMZ below..
Multiple witnesses tell us a movie shoot -- involving Ice Cube and Dr. Dre -- was going down when Suge pulled up in his car. We're told security told Suge to leave and that's when trouble began.
A fight broke out between Suge and 2 men. Suge got back into his car, took the wheel and threw the vehicle in reverse ... and ran over a man who suffered fatal injuries.
It's unclear at this point if the victim was connected to the movie. A source close to Cube tells us production had wrapped when the fight went down ... and he and Dre were not on set.
Sources connected with Suge tell TMZ ... the 2 men who fought Suge were the instigators. Our sources say Suge was scared because he's in frail health -- in addition to being shot 6 times last summer, he recently almost died from a blood clot.
The victim is Terry Carter, who we're told is a friend of Suge's who arrived with him at the scene. Our sources say Carter was in the process of walking to the passenger door of Suge's vehicle, but happened to be in the rear when Suge gunned it.
Two other men were also hit ... including Cle "Bone" Sloane -- who's appeared in "Training Day" and "End of Watch" -- and suffered non-life threatening injuries. Both men are in the hospital.
Suge has been placed under arrest and is being held on $2 million bail.

Jordan 'says it will hang all ISIS captives' if group kills Jordanian pilot captured in Syria

Posted: 30 Jan 2015 04:47 AM PST

Jordanian pilot First Lieutenant Mu'ath Safi Yousef al-Kaseasbeh was captured by ISIS militants in December after his plane was shot down while he was conducting airstrikes over Syria. Now Jordan has threatened to kill all ISIS prisoners in their country if Mu'ath is killed by ISIS.

From Mail Online
Jordan has threatened to fast-track the execution of a would-be suicide bomber ISIS is trying to free if the terror group kills its captured pilot, it was reported today.
The government has apparently warned that Sajida al-Rishawi and other jailed ISIS commanders would be 'quickly judged and sentenced' in revenge for Muath al-Kaseasbeh's death.
It comes after a deadline for a possible prisoner swap allegedly set by ISIS passed yesterday with no clue over the fate of al-Kaseasbeh or fellow Japanese hostage Kenji Goto.

Intelligence sources said ISIS's refusal to prove that al-Kaseasbeh was alive meant any deal with the militants was doomed.

Now Jordan has reportedly stepped up its rhetoric by warning of its intent to retaliate if the negotiations end in bloodshed.

Elijah Magnier, chief international correspondent for Kuwait's Al Rai newspaper, told MailOnline: 'I have reliable contact in the Jordanian government who says a message has been passed to ISIS. It warns that if they kill the pilot they will implement the death sentences for Sajida and other ISIS prisoners as soon as possible.'

Shortly after reports of the ultimatum emerged, Jordan issued a statement saying they were still waiting for proof that the captured F-16 pilot was still alive.
Jordan had agreed to an ISIS demand to free al-Rishawi who failed to fulfil her Al Qaeda mission as a suicide bomber.

In return, ISIS said it would not execute the 26-year-old pilot, who was seized in December after crashing near its HQ in the Syrian city of Raqqa.
In its latest audio recording, ISIS threatened to kill al-Kaseasbeh if a deadline was not kept for the release of al-Rishawi by dusk Iraq time yesterday - around 5.30pm (2.30pm GMT).
But it appeared to make no promises to release him, another condition the Jordanian government is demanding.
Jordan has threatened to speed up the execution of a would-be suicide bomber the Islamic State is trying to free if the terror group kills its captured pilot Muath al-Kaseasbeh, seen above in a picture being held by fellow hostage Kenji Goto in a video posted by ISIS last week demanding the release of an Iraqi terrorist.
It was not clear from the recording what would happen to Mr Goto if the deadline was missed.

Prof. Pat Utomi writes on the controversial Charles Soludo article

Posted: 30 Jan 2015 04:46 AM PST

Professor of political economy and former presidential candidate Pat Utomi shared this on his Facebook this morning. Read and tell us what you think...
The firestorm generated by Chukwuma Soludo's well reasoned commentary on the place of issues in the 2015 electioneering campaign has somehow become the core of the campaign. What a way to come from outside and define agenda.
Of course I do not agree with all the points marshaled by the erstwhile CBN Governor and Patito's Gang member, but not to commend his citizen duty of engagement or indicate as reprehensible the resort to ad hominen bashing of the former Economic Adviser instead of providing Facts to counter the views he had raised.
That is issues based campaign. I will myself raise logic to support and dispute some of the points in the Soludo intervention.

I do agree with Soludo that issues matter. I also think that those who turn to divisive emotion-laden typecasting of others rather than issues pertaining to the well being of the Nigerian people do a grave disservice not only to democracy but to the long term common Good of all.

The Soludo thrust of criticism sounds like an attack on the statist perspective that intervention can generate jobs and economic growth. Even as one who likes to see government out of the way, I find the approach worrying because beyond the Keynesian logic that brought the ultimate capitalist state, the US, out of the Great Depression with initiatives like the Tennessee Valley Authority in Infrastructure, there is more recent example of post 2008 global financial crisis and the stimulus packages of the Obama Administration, and now Europe turning to Quantitative Easing, not to knock the wall street / Main street tag team approach to ensuring prosperity. Soludo's solutions sometimes sounded like Deepak Lal on the poverty of Development Economics. I think that if we see current oil price slum as an opportunity rather than a threat then we have to see a role for government in the way Lee Kuan Yew used state intervention when Singapore was prostrate in 1965, as Nigeria is today.

This leads to another point I am not in agreement with Soludo on. He talks about cost of programmes and the fact that low oil prices mean you cannot finance a big idea. In 1965 Singapore's main revenues came from rent for the British Naval Base and the British had decided to shut all bases east of Eden. The decision of leaders of the United Malay, National Organisational (UMNO) to eject Singapore from the Federation that was thought to be the only hope left. Singapore, out of pocket, and all dressed up with nowhere to go. Then they rolled up their sleeves, got creative, transmitted the right values and found leadership that inspired and had integrity. Today the small country probably has the largest concentration of billionaires per capital on earth.

Here in Nigeria, shortly after self government, in the 1950's, Nnamdi Azikiwe as Premier of Eastern Region was anxious to match the free education policy of Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Palm Produce did not fetch as much as Cocoa in the Market. The civil servants led by the new Permanent Secretary in Finance, Chief Jerome Udoji thought it could not be done because of limitations of money. Zik insisted and accused Udoji, in Parliament, of trying to sabotage his government. After 40 percent of the Eastern Nigeria budget of 1957 had gone to education and was still inadequate, the Ugoji team suggested the introduction of fees for Primary 1 and Primary 5. But leadership kicked in. A philosophy called "Ibu anyi danda" raised a formula that created a partnership between government, the communities and missionaries that enabled the East leapfrog the gap in education between the East and West.
In both cases the difference was leadership. At the centre in Abuja for some reason that may be from exposure, or whatever, does not inspire as Lee Kuan Yew, Nnamdi Azikiwe and Michael Okpara did. Money is not everything in making dreams come through.

Among the many lessons we will learn, if we begin to operationalize the cash transfers initiative of APC, a concept that helped Inatio Da Silva pull Brazil out of 'potential' into a global economic powerhouse, is that we may not need as much cash as Soludo projects and that corruption and goal displacement is so high in a bloated public service that the savings will more than be adequate. Besides from Kayode Fayemi and Rauf Aregbesola we learn that with such programmes in Ekiti and Osun that the numbers projected are often exaggerated. Given our abuse of census we are likely to find much fewer people in those brackets. Check with the Bill Gates Foundation on satellite imagery studies of target population groups.
Having stated my major point of disagreement, it is useful to reflect on some other points raised by Soludo.
His broadside on austerity measures pronouncement and the road to austerity is a true, fair and proper read. No question that we walked with our eyes open into a repeat of 1982. In many of my speeches and my 2006 book WHY NATIONS Are Poor, I recall how the Iranian revolution pushed oil prices into the stratosphere of USD 40 a barrel. We went reckless with champagne and even importing sand and big men bought Rolls Royces. We managed to borrow ourselves into a dept trap. On this round we moved up private jets and buying up Dubai.
When this current boom started with India Rising and China producing I recall on several occasions calling for fiscal responsibility compact in which flows into the distributable pool, the FAC account, not go above $40 a barrel, with additional revenues up to $70 a barrel price going to a stabilization fund. This fund would be available were prices to drop below $40 to be used to ensure a constant budget funding up $40 in lean times. Beyond $70 it should flow into a future fund. I have been singing this song for several years but the technocrats say the politicians insist on sharing the whole money and say of talk about saving for a rainy day that it is pointless planning for the rain when it was already pouring torrents. My retort was what is so wrong in resigning to make a point and force public conversation to educate the people because these politicians may be greedy but they surely do not hate their children. They have only acted in ignorance. I point them to young Mahathir Mohammed in Malaysia who disagreed with the position of the then Prime Minister and spoke up. He was dropped from the government where he was a junior minister, and expelled from The United Malay National Organization (UMNO) the dominant party at that time. Out of government he wrote a book: The Malay Dilemma. That triggered soul searching that finished with the resignation of the Prime Minister. He was brought back into the Party. Not long after Dr Mahathir Ibn Mohammed became Prime Minister and the history of Malaysia changed for good.
What does it take to lead such change- Genius? No. I draw from the Ronald Reagan experience in the US. President Reagan was not a genius. Some think he probably already had Alzheimer disease when he entered the White house. But his values were clear as was his vision. He found the right people and an America, in retreat, was revitalized, opening the way for teen and twenty American young stars to create a new industry with the .com revolution. Ironically, I have said elsewhere that the Buhari movement somehow reminds me of the coming of Ronald Reagan.

Let me close with a caveat. My response is a citizen response. My prism on this is not partisan. But I am a card carrying member of the APC. The emergence of the APC is a culmination of my life's quest as an institutionalist to see the dynamic of two balanced political parties. I was sure that without competition between parties that are equals progress would continue to elude Nigeria So I longed for and worked for the scenario we have today. But I see in the torrent of abuse on Chukwumah Soludo for speaking truth to power and worry this thing we have worked hard for, not in any pursuit of any self interest, but for the advance of the common good, could be threatened by those who fail to understand the very idea of the public squares and the triumph of the ideas rather than emotional outbursts that result in tension and violence.

I have read unprintable things on line and in so many e-groups, some more offensive than Charlie Hebdo cartoons from both sides. This is poison we must curb. It is a double blow when those who follow this track are well educated. So let us leave this business of certificates and uncompleted PHDs and hateful portrayals of opponents in caricature from the cross to throw backs of earlier life of candidates that seem like Hitler's Goebbels at work let's examine vision of society of challenges and the record of incumbents. Lets ask people, regarding incumbents, is your life better today than it was four years ago and to the challengers how can you make these same lives much better four years from now. To win elections from intimidation, a shower of insults and trying to diminish opponents rather than engage their minds can only produce pyrrhic victory.

The worst such "victory" would be to win an election and lose a nation through bitterness that makes it difficult to get people to work together to advance the shared good of the people. For people like me the public sphere is about the pursuit of the elevated immortality. This comes when you do what is right and if providence beckons, as it did for Mahathir Mohammed, lee Kuan Yew and Ronald Reagan then you live a name that time cannot find an eraser to rub off. Those who negate the opportunity for progress to blossom and the triumph of the human spirit to bring progress deserved die a thousand times while they still inhale and exhale no matter the title they get for their place is in infamy.
