I’m coming up with anti-corruption plan - President Jonathan says Posted: 02 Jan 2015 11:13 AM PST Speaking during a special New Year service at the Dunamis International Gospel Centre, in Abuja yesterday January 1st, President Jonathan said his administration is coming up with plans and programmes to fight corruption in Nigeria. What he said below... "There are two main problems confronting us as a nation: The issue of insecurity in the North where we have the Boko Haram terrorists and in the South where we have commercial kidnapping. The next thing that people worry about after security is the issue of corruption. We are coming out with programmes and plans to clean up. These are things that you don't just use a magical wand to wave off, otherwise even before I became the President, there wouldn't have been corruption in Nigeria.

Posted: 02 Jan 2015 11:00 AM PST Jowana aka Ms. Grand born Joanna John is an indigene of the eastern part of Nigeria, she is the third from a family of 7 and graduated with a BSc. in Mass communication from the Lead City University. Music for her didn't just emanate while in school, she has indeed been singing at the age of 9. She joined the choir in her high school and also went on to join the church choir as well. Her passion for music and entertainment generally led her to take it up professionally in 2005 when she recorded her first demo, 'Friday Nite' which she wrote alongside her brother. But due to educational demands she had to put music on hold and now she's back. An all round entertainer, she has tried her hands on acting as well. Jowana has featured in some movies (Relationships, Beautiful Colours with Van Vicker and Mercy Johnson, 7inch Curve) and soap operas (Edge of Paradise, Footprints, Half Sisters, A Love Like ours, Living Large). She loves to sing and naturally so but asides that she enjoys reading, watching movies and dancing. Her inspiration to write music is drawn from God, Michael Jackson, Donnie McClurkin, Bob Marley, Oprah Winfrey amongst others. Her new single 'Okoro' is a catchy tune with a groovy beat that will have listeners bopping their heads. Delivered in Pidgin English with a touch of Igbo and Yoruba in between, 'Okoro' should find shelter in the hearts of music lovers across the country, continent & globally. Appeal Court frees Erastus Akingbola of N47.5billion theft charge Posted: 02 Jan 2015 07:21 AM PST According to a report by PM News, a Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos has quashed the 22-count charge brought against the former Managing Director of Intercontinental Bank Plc, Dr. Erastus Akingbola by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The EFCC had alleged that Akingbola stole N47.5 billion belonging to the bank. The report below... Ruling on Akingbola's application on jurisdiction, the court presided over by Justice Amina Augie held that the High Court of Lagos State presided over by Justice Lateef Lawal-Akapo lacked jurisdiction to entertain the suit filed against him by the commission Justice Augie said it amounted to miscarriage of justice for the lower court to have dismissed Akingbola's application challenging its jurisdiction on the matter. "The appeal is meritorious and allowed," she declared. "I am convinced that the lower court refused to align itself with the decision of this court in Nwosu's case," she further held. Akingbola and his co-defendant, Bayo Dada, had filed two separate applications challenging the jurisdiction of the court to hear the 22-count charge filed against them by the EFCC. But, the lower court, in its ruling on 2 May, 2014 dismissed their applications. Justice Lawal-Akapo had then held that the charges preferred against the defendants were within its competence and jurisdiction to determine. Dissatisfied with the ruling of the high court, Akingbola and Dada approached the Appeal Court, praying that the trial court's decision be set aside. Delievering the judgement, Justice Augie declared that the lower court fell into serious error by not abiding by the decision on Nwosu's case adding, "it is most unfair and is an injustice". According to her, the lower court has no option than to follow the decision of the higher court on Nwosu's case. "The point must be made that the decision of this court in Nwosu's case was based on proof of evidence." The judge noted that all the charges against the defendants arose out of capital market transactions. "Only federal high court is conferred with the exclusive jurisdiction to try cases of capital market transaction," she stressed. The appellate court held that the lower court owes it a duty to compare and contrast the documents cited by parties. "It is its duty to examine materials brought before him. It is the role of the judge to do justice in adjudicating all the cases brought before him. "One sided justice would amount to injustice and favouring one side. "The proof of evidence was there but the trial judge at the lower court accused the defendants of not furnishing him with the documents. "He has failed in his duty." Justice Augie further held that the appeal filed by the defendants has nothing to do with evidence, noting that the lower court failed to go through argument canvassed before it assumed jurisdiction on the matter. She emphasised that the issue of jurisdiction should not have been toyed with by the lower court. "I agree with the appellant that the lower court ought to have gone through the proof of evidence. "There is no way a charge of stealing can stand without going through the proof of evidence," she declared. Culled from PM News |

Usher gets into a fight in the club over fiancee, gets punched in the eye Posted: 02 Jan 2015 06:53 AM PST The singer got into a fight on New Year's eve inside Miami's hotspot E11even and shared a pic of his bloody red eye on his instagram page, writing that the guy he fought with came out worse. Well, a source told MTO what happened... Usher was in VIP with his girlfriend, and some drunk white guy was screaming disrespectful things towards Usher, trying to get his attention. When that didn't work, he started saying nasty things about his [fiancee Grace]. The guy called her ugly. To Usher's credit, he didn't act like a b*tch. He broke through security and started fighting the guy. Usher f*cked him up. It was like a four piece - Usher must be a boxer or something because the punches were very fast. I don't know how Usher's eye got like that because I didn't see White dude even tough Usher. |
Unilever donates 1 million free samples of soap to schools Posted: 02 Jan 2015 06:13 AM PST As part of efforts to drive awareness for good hygiene among school pupils, Unilever Nigeria Plc has donated samples of Lifebuoy soap to schools across the countries. At one of the donation site, Oregun High School, the management of the Unilever enjoined the pupils to imbibe the attitude of handwashing as a critical step to preventing them from contacting diseases adding that doing so will further help them to stay healthy as they pursue their life ambition. Speaking at the assembly ground of the school premises to sensitize the students on the essence of hand washing and the steps to be taken to prevent any form of diseases, The brand building director of the company, Mr. David Okeme explained that hygiene has become necessary considering the danger it poses to the future of children especially as it affects the realization of their life-long goals. He said" Hygiene is something that is attached to the future of the children. In many cases, they always lead to the death of children. As a company, we believe that we have a role to play in ensuring that they grow up healthy and strong to become the leaders of tomorrow. You must take to the seven steps to good hygiene because doing so will help promote healthy living". Speaking further on what inform the initiative, Okeme explained that the idea stem out of the need to increase the level of awareness as far as hand washing was concerned and also promote good nutrition which formed the reason for bringing on the brand at inception. He said" Lifebuoy is the world number one soap. It came at a point when the world was in the midst of diarrhoea epidemic after the Second World War. Since then, lifebuoy has been in the service of humanities trying to actually drive the awareness of nutrition and the impact of poor nutrition on children especially in Nigeria where mortality among children between the age of 5 and above is extremely high. As a matter of confirmation, it has been proven that basic hand washing actually reduces that incidence of disease by more than 50%. What we are doing is to carry on with the purpose of the brand lifebuoy. Secondly, it is the fact that we have just been through a major health emergency with lifebuoy contributing immensely through awareness creation and donation of soap to help drive the behavior. It is not just good enough to tell people how to wash hand but to give them the tool .That is what we are doing today. In Nigeria, we are giving a million free samples of lifebuoy to children to help them embed the behavior of hand washing . This donation you are seeing today has happened in key countries where we had this health challenge across West Africa. This is how Unilever has chosen to intervene to help restore our children with the right behaviours and ensure that we live a very healthy life. Asked if the donation is done only in Lagos , Okeme disagreed saying that donations were taking place simultaneously across the country. He said" This is not a one shot intervention we are doing .Lifebuoy runs a school program which goes to schools across the country to teach children. So, we have that as a regular service. By today, we have directly reached over 3 million school children to teach them the importance of hand washing. We have an ongoing service to drive awareness in that area. This is already happening across the country. On her part, the principal of the school, Mrs.Kuti Toyin commended the company and the non governmental organization for the initiative. She said" I think Unilever as well as the NGO has really done well. You are aware that the ebola issue was really challenging for us as a nation. By this action, I want to appreciate them on behalf po the school, the state government. For me, this action is not about saving the child alone but saving the world. In his remarks, the representative of the NGO,Mr.Opeyemi Odedere Save the Children, harped on the importance of hand washing to personal hygiene stating that the intervention being made by Unilever will go a long way to promote healthy life among the children. He said" Prior to now, we have been hearing about prevention against disease. But we all know what led to this campaign, the Ebola issue which has been curtailed. But yet, we find it as an opportunity to chase it away by making sure we educate the children on preventive measures not only for Ebola built other diseases. This is an opportunity to also educate them on the essence of hand washing, keeping proper hygiene. Apart from the daily washing of hand, there are methods that are meant to be used to be able to wash the hand effectively. |

Cameroonian investigative journalist Chief Bisong shared the information on twitter. Meanwhile Cameroonian authorities say they will be recruiting 20,000 military officers as part of measures to prevent further attacks by members of the sect even as information emerged that Boko Haram members are working to enlist young Cameroonians into their group. A lawmaker in Cameroon's parliament, Senator Haman Paul told Voice Of America "There was something that we witnessed in Maroua (in northern Cameroon). People told us that they found people in town that were not actually people they were used to. When we found that one part of the country is in a very delicate situation, it is better to manage prevention instead of consequences," |
