There's a Nigerian that's 125 year old? See his photos Posted: 11 Jan 2015 01:13 PM PST Some guy named Lugard Ekhator is on Facebook claiming that his grand father, Pa Ekhator Onabor, is a super-centenarian - born around 1890, which would make him about 125 years old. According to the grandson, Pa Ekhator Onabor is the current Odionwere of former Ugbugo village, now Evbuohen N'Oba, near Ugo Niyekeorhionmwon, in Orhionmwon LGA of Edo State. "He married a wife who had six children for him (2 men and 4 women), but died in the 80s. One of the female child (the first born) is late now some years ago and was of old age, as Pa Ekhator now has 5 surviving children.More of what the grandson wrote on Facebook below... Although he never went to any former school, but worked with white men in the timber industry where they were used as tree (igedu) cutters with axe, and then prepare the logs for transportation through the sea via Sapale for industrial usage by the white men. Although he was born and bred as a traditionalist, (I used to follow him to make sacrifices in the bush for the gods in my younger days) but today he is a professing Christian, who underwent water baptism some five years ago or thereabouts, after confessing JESUS as his LORD and personal saviour. Hallelujah! He was never rich financially in all his rich but this never stopped him from ensuring that his children attend standard schools as it was known then, which led to his first son Mr. Johnson Ekhator, 3rd born to served and retired from Pamol Rubber Company, Sokponba, Edo State. His second son, Mr. Raphael Ekhator, (my father) 4th born served and retired from the services of Ministry of Education, Edo State Government as a Messenger. To appreciate the longevity of Pa Ekhator Onabor, his last born is 61 years old this 2015. BIRTH TIME: According to Pa Ekhator Onabor, his mother told him that he was around 7 years old when Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi was exiled to Calabar, during the invasion of the Benin Kingdom by the British in 1897. That means, Pa Ekhator was born around 1890 thereabout though no single document whatsoever is available to back this up. LIFE OCCURRENCES: He told us that he once fell from a palm tree and died when he went to harvest palm fruits (banga) for his uncle. The death story was as a result of what he witnessed during his unconscious state. Although no one was with him in this journey, but the evidence that followed when he finally regained consciousness by cutting down the palm tree to remove his ropes used in climbing up the tree because it was hanging up there proved that he was actually involved in that accident. He never broke a single joint in his body but when he cut down the tree, it fell across the road path to the farm. He cut it again to free the road for passage, went home and never told anybody about the development. On the following day as he was going to the farm with his uncle, they came to the place and his uncle said "there was no rain yesterday, what felled this palm tree?" It was then he told his uncle that he was the one that cut down the palm tree. When he queried the reason, he then told him that he fell down yesterday from the tree and in order remove his ropes, he had to cut it down. He was that strong. On getting to the farm, he said his uncle rubbed his body with fresh pepper in order to melt any frozen blood vessels that may result from the fall. So many years after, Pa Ekhator is still strong and alive. This is amazing. Another occurrence in his life was in 1990 or so. I witnessed this very one. The previous day, we made a sacrifice for a woman where we had killed a he goat. The following day being Even (native Sunday), he woke up early in the morning and then prepared for the village elders' meeting, usually called by the Odionwere. He left for the meeting around 9 AM without eating. He came back towards the afternoon and after some time, he went to sleep. During the evening meal, when he was woken up to eat, he couldn't wake up. Soon, a lot people had come around trying to wake him up to no avail, though he was breathing. Native doctors were quickly brought in to make incantations whether he was still alive and stuff like that. He never woke up and he started battling for life. He was just dragging here and there on his mud bed and making some sounds gasping for life. This continued until around 4 AM the next morning, keeping the villagers awake and people proving one form of thing or the other to revive him. And when he finally regained consciousness, the first thing he asked was "what are people doing her?" He was told that they have been there since yesterday for him because he refused to wake up. He dismissed it, but when he wanted to move out of the room, he legs couldn't take him. It was then he believed what people were telling him that he had died earlier. Hmm! Granpa is still alive ooh 25 years after. And in October 1996, he was crowned the Odionwere of Ugbugo, now Evbuohen N'Oba in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State, becoming one of the longest reign in that position which is 19 years on the throne now. May the name of the LORD be praised. Amen. My grandfather no longer see due to his old age and the long time hunter he engaged in his earlier years in life, but his eyes are still open as if he still sees. As old as he is, he still go out of his room to the backyard to defecate with the help of others. His old age is really a blessing to us because it is a thing of joy to have a very old man as your grandparent, even though financial blessings are not there, but money can never buy nor give old age. And so, when I visited him this December 2014, I was pleased to still hear his voice and meet him alive even though many are worried that he ought to have died by now. But can he kill himself because people want him to die? Live on Grandpa and enjoy the remaining days of your existence here on earth until you meet your saviour in glory if Jesus tarry. The unforgettable lesson I learnt from my Grandfather even when I was not a Christian by then was the warning he gave us, when my father was accused of being a wizard. He said "My son, if lie is as sweet as salt and native chalk, don't use it to rub your body." This advice of my Grandfather has helped me over the years to be weary of lying. He ensured that allegation of wizard against my father was pursued to its logical conclusion until it was confirmed that my father was never a wizard through the traditional means of defining such things at the time. LORD JESUS, should you tarry, grant us long life as seen in the life of my Grandfather to your own glory. And grandpa, should you pass on to glory now, surely you've left an excellent life of longevity worthy of emulation. It is my prayer that you will make it to the marriage supper of the Lamb. Amen. To GOD be all the glory. Lugard Ekhator |

Gen Olukolade tweets on Baga, reports on number of casualties Posted: 11 Jan 2015 06:24 AM PST In a series of tweets, Nigeria Defence Spokesperson, Gen Chris Olukolade reacted to all conflicting reports about Baga, the fight to reclaim Baga, the number of civilians, military and militants killed during last week's attack by Boko Haram members. According to Gen Olukolade, the number of deaths in Baga, both of civilians and military cannot be "creditably counted". He also added that the military cannot also count the number of Boko Haram members they killed. He says that Nigeria owns the fight against the terror group and that for best reasons known to them, Niger and Chad government withdrew their troops from the Multi Joint Task Force unit in Baga. Posted: 11 Jan 2015 03:25 AM PST Anthony Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie, the retired Archbishop of Lagos state has reacted to the recent statements made by Fr. Ejike Mbaka on President Jonathan's led administration. In an interview with Vanguard, Cardinal Okogie said the statements made by Fr Mbaka were abnormal and certainly not one influenced by God's spirit but by another spirit. According to the respected clergyman, Mbaka's attitude is unbecoming. He says if he had his way he would have closed down the Enugu diocese as Fr. Mbaka has repeatedly been involved in controversial things which the leadership of the diocese has not deemed fit to call him to order. Excerpts of his interview after the cut... How do you see the statement credited to Rev. Father Ejike Mbaka? Any serious priest will not speak the way he spoke. I am not saying that he is not serious. I will not agree with the things he said. According to what I read in the newspapers, a few weeks earlier, the First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, visited his Adoration Ground in Enugu and he prayed for her. At that occasion, he was said to have lambasted the opposition party, APC, and now to turn around overnight and start lambasting President Goodluck Jonathan shows that there is something wrong somewhere. Personally, I felt bad because it is not the place of a priest to go to that extent. He can have his personal opinion, but to go to the extent that he went is abnormal. I want you to know that he wasn't speaking for the church. He said he was moved by the spirit, and I wonder what kind of spirit was that. He said he was under the inspiration of the spirit. If he was under the inspiration of the spirit, I wonder if the spirit is that of God. I don't think the spirit he's referring to is the spirit of God. He must have been under the influence of another spirit. He must have been listening to a wrong spirit. Is the statement not embarrassing to the Catholic Church as a whole? Indeed, it is. But I must say to you that he was not speaking on behalf of the church. No! No!! No!!! Anybody with such opinion is in error. The man cannot hold brief for the church. Pardon me, but how can I say you are bloody fool and anybody takes that to mean that all journalists are bloody fools. It's very funny. In a situation such as this, what does the Catholic Church do? Well, the Catholic Church is structured in such a way that there are dioceses where each priest belongs. This particular priest happens to come from Enugu Diocese, so it is left for the bishop in charge of that diocese to discipline him. If the priest fails to obey the discipline, then the bishop is obligated to report the mother to the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, CBCN. You may have heard the Bishop of Abuja Diocese, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, who said that if the priest were to be in his diocese, he would discipline him straight. But he is not in his diocese. The best anyone of us can do is just to advise him that he had gone too far and he is free to take our advice and he may not. God gave every one of us a free will and we are at liberty to use the freewill as we choose. What kind of sanction can be given to such a priest? It depends on his bishop. You cannot dictate for his bishop. Don't forget that this same man was at loggerheads with a former governor of Enugu State, Chimaroke Nnamanni, and it was the same Adoration Ground in Enugu. If I have my way, we should close that place because a lot of things have been happening there that are out of tune. I think Gov. Peter Obi also went there for prayers at one point. If I have my way, I won't go there for anything… |

The Sunday Sun headline that's got people irritated... Posted: 11 Jan 2015 03:17 AM PST They are talking about it on Twitter. Apparently people are irritated with Sunday Sun for its choice of word in a headline today. Many people think the word 'rape' is too strong to be misused at any time. Abuja based Virgin Kids academy are like a football team. The Golden Eaglets beat them 3-1 at the NFF / FIFA goal project in Abuja. The problem causing outcry is the way Sunday Sun captioned the story. Many feel the use of 'rape' to tag the Golden Eaglets victory over 'Virgin Kids' is inappropriate. |

Man who killed Austria-based lover narrates what happened, says it was an accident Posted: 11 Jan 2015 02:59 AM PST The 41 year old man who killed his Austria-based lover, Rose Aifuwa, (pictured right) over unpaid debt (read story here) has opened up about how he killed the mother of four on Christmas Day. He denied owing the Austrian citizen and said her death was an accident. He told Sunday Vanguard; "I am 41 years old and a motor spare parts dealer. I did not kill her. It happened on the 25th of December very early in the morning. There is one boy that help me to pack my goods, the boy was with me. After I dropped my family, I now decided to go and drop the boy. On getting to Upper Mission junction, she called me and asked if I didn't know that, that day was watch night, and that if I would come to see her. I said I was coming. Immediately I turned my car and drove down to her shop, she had a bar. On getting there I saw some boys there drinking. I called the sales girl there and told her to give everybody drink. The drink amounted to N1,800. Among the boys there one of them knew me, so bought me one bottle. So I told my lady friend that I needed to go and drop the boy with me as he was drunk. I promised her that I will come back. That was how she allowed me go. "I drove off. We stopped somewhere to have a drink. I equally bought drink for people there. But somehow I decided that I will go home after dropping the boy, but immediately I passed Upper Mission junction, near her place, her call came in. So I told her I was coming and I decided to turn my car to her house. When I got to her place, I took a stick of cigarette from her and told her that I will need to go home early, that some body was in my car. But as I was leaving her door she blocked me. I told her that I guessed she was drunk because any time she was drunk, that was the way she behaved. But the next thing I noticed was a slap, I retaliated. Before that I observed that some body was sleeping somewhere in her room, where I went to collect the cigarette. So I went outside but the boy sleeping there woke up and told me not to leave the house. She went to wake up another person and was telling the person something inside. So the guy came out and said I should not leave the compound. The boy started making calls, so I quickly entered my car and locked the car. I saw her rush towards me but I had pinned the doors already. But she blocked my car and I saw two of the boys trying to drag her out of my way. Then I zoomed off, but I was now asking my boy after we left the compound if I hit anybody. The boy said no, that God forbid. But I was not comfortable because I was really drunk". After I checked my car very well, I did not notice anything. I went to my friend's place to inform him of my fear. I now called some body to go to my lady's house to find out whether I hit some body. The boy went and told me that there was nothing like that. So I became confused. I called my younger brother to help me investigate if she was okay. He called me later to say that he heard she was in hospital and that they had deposited money. He later called me to say that they saw a body at Upper Mission junction and that it was the lady. I called my friends and they said I should go to the police station to report myself. "I can't sleep, I can't eat. This is somebody we did everything together and I loved her. I did not beat her, I don't know what happened. After the incident, some youths went to my house to burn it down, all my people left the house. My sisters can no longer open their shops because they are scared. I am not owing her. The only goods she brought to me was in February, that was when we met. She brought them from Austria. I am not owing her a dime and we didn't have any problem. I even bought her a bag of rice for Christmas. I did not kill before, I am devastated". |
