Why are all these Naija hotel workers striking and protesting?

Posted: 28 Jan 2015 01:07 PM PST

First, it was the staff of Radisson Blu Hotel on Ozumba Mbadiwe, Victoria Island. The hotel had to be temporarily shut down after their workers refused to continue work, claiming they haven't been paid for at least two months. In fact they protested in front of the hotel on Monday January 26th. Now it's the staff of Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos. A few of them have sent me emails explaining their own side of what's happening. Apparently, over 100 of them have refused to work, alleging ill treatment and not being paid enough.

Isn't there like a union for hotel workers in Nigeria that can sort this out for members?

APC should let Buhari seek medicare abroad - Ayo Fayose

Posted: 28 Jan 2015 10:48 AM PST

This Governor Ayo Fayose is so relentless...lol. Here's a press statement I just received. Read below...
Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has pleaded with leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC, especially former Lagos State governor, Senator Bola Tinubu to be human enough to allow the party's presidential candidate, Major General Mohammadu Buhari (rtd) embark on his planned medical trip abroad.
The governor said Buhari was being prevented from traveling abroad for medical treatment, despite his ill-health so as to avoid controversies.
Special Assistant to the Governor on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka quoted Governor Fayose as saying at a campaign rally in Omuo Ekiti, Ekiti East Local Government that "Buhari is a car with a damaged engine but being packaged by Tinubu and his cabal whose only interest is the wealth of Nigeria."

He said; "In all the campaign rallies held by the APC,  Buhari never spoke for more than six minutes.
"Buhari will just utter some words that he had rehearsed and any attempt to bring in new words always result to confusion in his brain due to senility. That was the reason he called his running mate Osunbade instead of Osinbajo and also referred to Imo State as Ibo State.

"This is clear evidence of ill-health, old and and senility.  Those packaging Buhari to achieve their personal ambition of gaining unhindered access to the wealth of Nigeria  should fear God and allow this old man to take care of his health," the governor said.
Speaking further, Fayose, who insisted that "Buhari is old and sick said; "they had programmed Buhari to travel to the U.S on 26th of this month, but they opted out when the secret trip was reported in the media.

"As a cover-up,  the APC cabal sold a story to the press that Buhari was invited to attend a programme in the US by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, (CSIS).
"Interestingly, the CSIS programme was billed for January 26, the same day Buhari was said to have planned his medical trip to the United States of America.

"However, the programme was cancelled, leaving Buhari with no excuse to travel and instead of them to allow the man to travel as he had planned, the APC cabal, who are obviously more interested in the presidency than Buhari's welfare are urging him on.

Why we cheat on our spouses - Abuja residents speak

Posted: 28 Jan 2015 06:33 AM PST

I hear there's a lot of cheating going on in Abuja (and everywhere else of course) but some residents of the city decided to explain why they do what they do. Quite an interesting report by News Agency of Nigeria, NAN. Read below and tell us what you think...
Some married people in Abuja on Wednesday identified the need for material possession as the major reason for infidelity among married couples.
Respondents in separate interviews also mentioned the desire to satisfy emotional needs as another contributory factor. Mr Johnson Eze, a civil servant, said he was cheating on his wife not because he loved her less but for the sole purpose of "catching some fun''.
He said:
"My marriage is one of the best because my wife, who is God-given, is an understanding woman and she tolerates me a lot. Yet, I still find myself cheating on her just for the fun of it. This does not in any way diminish the love I have for her and my lovely kids. I recall an incident that happened some time ago. I told my wife that I was travelling to Calabar for an official assignment, but ended up with my girlfriend in a hotel, and she found out. The incident almost destroyed my home but thanks to God my wife was able to forgive and forget put the ugly incident behind, '' he said.
Eze, who described infidelity as 'a careless act,' advised men to desist from it. A female boutique operator, who pleaded anonymity, said the desire to keep up with the latest fashion trend made her to cheat on her husband. According to her, the husband, a low income earner, was financially incapable of meeting her insatiable material needs.
"Besides, my hubby and I fight over things that are not relevant and I lie to him most times to raise extra cash to buy something, which he considers unnecessary. I have not been faithful in my marriage because of the temptation to stay on top of the fashion trend which is way beyond the financial capacity of my husband. Besides the extra cash my boyfriend gives me, whenever I want to collect money from my husband for food stuff and other basic necessities I always double the cost. This has become a habit for me and whenever I don't get my share in any shopping I do on behalf of the family, I get angry and pick on my husband at any little provocation, '' she added.
A legal practitioner who offered a coined name – Mr Kosi Chiemela – blamed his adulterous actions on lack of intimacy, emotional disconnection and lack of friendship with his wife. Chiemela who described marriage as "one difficult school you cannot graduate from till you die,'' stated that the only way to escape was to stay single.
"I am a temperamental person and when I newly got married, it was not easy for my wife whose temper is also short. "Both of us hardly agree on anything and the only escape route for me is to seek love and affection elsewhere. "My girlfriend understands me and she tolerates a lot, unlike my wife who blows up like a bomb at the slightest provocation,'' he said.

The Broom or the Vacuum Cleaner? - By Reno Omokri

Posted: 28 Jan 2015 07:14 AM PST

Article written by Pres Jonathan's new media aide, Reno Omokri. Read and share your thoughts...
On Tuesday the 27th of January, in Lafia, Nasarawa state, President Jonathan said "we are building a country for a digital generation".  Let us ponder on that for a second. That statement rings true, as I cannot imagine any truly patriotic Nigerian that will want Nigeria to remain in an analogue state. That being said, what place does a broom have in a digital society? You will agree with me that brooms are more suited for an analogue society.

Let me expatiate. One vacuum cleaner can do the work of one hundred brooms and can do it faster and more efficiently too. The APC and Muhammadu Buhari are representative of brooms. This is why Muhammadu Buhari keeps saying he will throw corrupt Nigerians into jail. Now, as a means of fighting corruption, there is nothing wrong with throwing corrupt persons into jail, particularly if you follow due process. But will that tactic work in Nigeria today? Yes, to an extent it will work, just as a broom will work to an extent in sweeping a dirty house.
But supposing you try a new and better way? Supposing that instead of just concentrating your efforts at sweeping people one by one into prison, you use a vacuum cleaner to clean the house at a faster pace by employing technology that makes it difficult, nay impossible, to steal?
Prior to the Goodluck Jonathan administration, there were fifty thousand ghost workers in the Federal Civil Service. They drained the treasure of about 2 billion US dollars annually. President Jonathan could have used the broom on them by unleashing the police and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to investigate who and who were collecting these fifty thousand unearned salaries. It would have taken many hours of investigation, evidence gathering, judicial process and lawyers to achieve that.
Being the philosopher king that he is, President Jonathan chose instead to employ technology to tackle the problem and using the software of the  Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System, IPPIS, this administration made it impossible for anybody who has not been physically captured in the IPPIS system, by way of entering his/her finger prints and biometrics, to receive a salary. And voila! in one fell swoop, all the fifty thousand ghost workers were excluded and the Federal Government was able to save billions every year that would have gone on salaries.
Also, it was common practice for civil servants to mop up unspent votes at the end of the year. The only problem is that they mopped up these funds into their private accounts rather than back to the government treasury.
But instead of going about with a big stick to bash in the head of offenders, the President simply approved a system that mandated that all payments be made by e-payments rather than cash and any e-payment that does not come under the sub head of salaries will shut down the system at the end of the year so that civil servants could not mop up funds as they were used to.
Take another instance. Prior to the rise of President Goodluck Jonathan to power, the fertilizer procurement and distribution system of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture was one of the biggest avenues for corruption. Contracts were awarded at hundreds of billions for products that either did not come or were substandard. Moreover, in the process of distributing the product, a lot of it was diverted and resold with the government not getting value for money and farmers not being able to feed the nation.
Enter the Jonathan administration and the e-wallet system of fertilizer distribution, in which the Federal Ministry no longer used middle men contractors, but dealt directly with the manufacturers and the end users of the product, the farmers, and used a simple text message to connect end user with manufacturer. The manufacturers simply debited the cost of the subsidized fertilizer from the e-wallet funds the farmer had on his phone, saving tens of billions and increasing efficiency.
These examples show that with a broom, you will work harder, but with a vacuum cleaner which President Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP represent, you will work smarter!
With a broom, you will deliver activity, but with a vacuum cleaner, you will deliver results!
It is this broom mentality that caused Major General Buhari to answer to the question "how do you intend to manage the economy in the face of dwindling oil price"asked during his Channels TV interview as follows "first we will stabilize the oil market and run an accountable government".
Do you control the price of oil? How do you want to stabilize the oil market if you do not control the price of the product and the global supply of the same? This is analogue thinking! This is broom mentality! That is the mentality that says that you will concentrate on curing corruption instead of focusing on preventing it when even a nursery school pupil knows that 'prevention is better than cure'!
And that is the choice before Nigerians. Are we going to go with a broom or with a vacuum cleaner? Are we going to go with an analogue leader or continue with a digital leader?
To make the choice easier for you, let me ask those who are able to remember how many schools were built by General Muhammadu Buhari when he was military head of state. The answer is of course none! But you might say that he only spent twenty months in office. But what if I told you that in his first twenty months in office President Goodluck Jonathan built nine new Federal Universities in Ebonyi, Kogi, Nasarawa, Bayelsa, Gombe, Taraba, Katsina, Jigawa and Ekiti?
Let me ask you also to remember how many Youth Empowerment Programme the Buhari led government put in place to spur youth employment. The answer is of course none! But five months after he was sworn in as Nigeria's President, President Jonathan launched the Youth With Innovation in Nigeria Initiative which is a unique business competition where Nigerian youths submit their business ideas to a consultancy chosen by government who then selects the best proposals and then the government trains them in modern business skills and grants them between 2-10 million Naira. Remember that this is a grant, not a loan. They do not have to pay back. Over four thousand youths have gone on to be selected and trained and have started up businesses that are employing other youths.

So once again, I ask are we going to go with a broom or with a vacuum cleaner? Are we going to go with an analogue leader or continue with a digital leader?
Nothing exemplifies the fact that the world has passed the APC and its flag bearer by than the use of a broom as their party's emblem. Yes, it is a fitting analogy for the All Progressive Congress, APC and its Presidential Flag Bearer, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd), but facts will bear me out that a broom cannot do the work of leadership that is expected in Nigeria today.

Reno.

Pope Francis met with transgender man Diego Neria Lejárraga (pictured right) and his fiancée on Saturday January 24th at the Vatican. The Pope agreed to meet Diego after Diego wrote to him telling him about the constant discrimination he experiences in church since he converted from a woman to a man. According to Spanish newspaper, Hoy, Diego, who was labelled 'the devil's daughter' by a priest said: "After hearing him on many occasions, I felt that he would listen to me."

Despite the meeting, the Vatican has not commented on it or released photos from the visit.

Meet Yinka Thomas-Ogboja, the serial entrepreneur with a heart of gold

Posted: 28 Jan 2015 04:18 AM PST

Yinka Thomas-Ogboja is a brand consultant with over 10 years industry experience. She is the CEO of D'Acero Limited, a creative agency based in the heart of Lagos. She is also the CEO of Drape Kings, an event décor sales boutique in Lagos. Even though her dream is to build chains of successful businesses, she still has a place in her heart for the less privileged. In her words, "make someone smile from the little you have", and this passion led to the birth of her NGO called Town.

Thomas O. Women Network (TOWN) is launched their project tagged "Bath a Child, Preserve a Life", on the 6thof December 2014. #BathAChild as it was popularly coined on social media is a soap project that focuses on the less privileged women in Nigeria. With the outbreak of Ebola and other communicable diseases, TOWN decided to be a part of this health campaign by donating free soaps and educating less privileged women in the society on the importance and benefit of ensuring that they and their children maintain good hygiene.

Growing up in an academic and Christian home where her Dad is a Doctor and her Mum is a Professor, it does not come as a surprise that Olayinka has bagged a BSc., two masters degrees and is currently undergoing her doctoral study at the Walden University, Minnesota, USA.

According to Olayinka Thomas-Ogboja, "We donate free soaps and other useful items to women in different communities and slums nationwide on a continuous basis, and also engage in health talks with them. TOWN also identifies and celebrates Nigeria women, called TOWN Icons, who engage in not-for-profit initiatives as a way of giving back to the society.

"Why soap? We say, why not soap? In Nigeria, practicing personal hygiene is difficult due to lack of resources such as clean water and soap. Many diseases (including respiratory and diarrheal diseases) can be spread when hands, face, and body are not washed appropriately". Our partners for #BathAChild are Transcorp Hilton, Eko Hotel & Suites, Oriental Hotel, Protea Ikeja GRA, Best Western, Unilever, Protea Ikoyi, and Westfoster Harbour, Wazobia FM and Business Day Newspaper. We solicit for more collaborations and donations this year.
