| Defence HQ says no. of people who died in Baga are not more than 150 Posted: 12 Jan 2015 12:48 PM PST   Gentlemen of the press, As you might be aware, there was another terror attack on the town of Baga in Borno state last week which left a number of people dead. Following that unfortunate attack, a lot of speculations and conjectures have been peddled by a section of the press particularly the on-line media regarding the casualty rate. Some claimed that over a thousand people were killed while others wrote with certainty that 2000 people lost their lives in that singular attack. Without any doubt, terrible atrocities have been committed against innocent Nigerians in Baga by the rampaging terrorists who attacked and have been operating in the town since 3 January 2015. Necessary actions are being taken to put an end to the activities of the terrorists and restore law and order to the community. To this end, a lot of covert operations including surveillance activities which recorded series aerial photographs are ongoing in that vicinity. It is however necessary to inform Nigerians in the interim that the exercise so far have not corroborated the report on the casualty rate which was put at 2000 deaths. From all available evidences, the number of people who lost their lives during that attack has so far not exceeded about 150 in the interim. This figure includes many of the terrorists who were bearing arms and got killed in the course of their attack and battle with troops. It should be noted that Baga and the neighbouring towns have been under series of attacks and harassment by terrorists. In the course of this, many residents have left, leaving the population in the town almost seriously depleted. Many were also able to escape while the terrorists' battle with troops lasted. The figure given by sources who claim to be eye witnesses must be an extremely exaggerated estimate. Unfortunately, this figure is now being bandied about in a section of the media as if it has been authenticated. It cannot be true. It is pertinent to once again urge the media to be circumspect in adopting casualty figures especially the ones given to them by the so-called eye witness, who in most cases, are influenced by their own perspectives. In any case, this is no time to debate about casualty figures or number of deaths as the life of any Nigerian is important. Much as the intention which could be with the aim of drawing attention to the atrocities being committed by terrorists group in Nigeria, is most welcome, the need for factual presentation of the situation is equally vital. In case the aim of this misinformation is to further the design of those bent on discrediting the government and the military, all well-meaning people should consider it as a disservice to humanity. It is important to remind those who are adept at spewing falsehood or exaggerating situations with intent to embolden the terrorists and diminish the efforts of the security forces, that their actions are inimical to the safety of the innocent Nigerians who have borne the brunt of the terrorist attacks in our country. The tendency to celebrate the occasional setbacks while downplaying the efforts and successes at containing the terrorists is unfair and very unfortunate. It is noteworthy that many international bodies are being misled in their interpretation of the situation owing to sensational headlines and stories. The Defence Headquarters wishes to reiterate its earlier assurance that the military has not given up on Baga or any part of the country where terrorists are marauding. Appropriate plans, men and resources are presently being mobilized to address the situation. We want reassure Nigerians that no portion of Nigeria's territory has been or will be conceded to terrorists. | ||

Years ago we felt safe enough driving in Lagos as long as your windows were up and you're locked in the car... Even the people with no ac in their cars would sweat it out, literally. The picture above was an attack/robbery that happened to me in broad day light last week Thursday (8th January). Continue...  Going home via CMS area, there was heavy traffic due to the campaign. I didn't really mind as I had someone driving... All of a sudden I saw people running so I knew for sure something was happening ahead... Checked to make sure my doors were locked. Next thing I see is bunch of thugs going to car windows, my driver asked me to keep my iPad and threw my bag to the back. He hadn't even finished saying "they are robbing" before one of the thugs started banging the driver's window demanding for money...he cracked the glass open a little and quickly gave him N500... Then he started demanding for phones, more money. By this time there were 2 of them by my side banging at my window, asking me for my phones and my bag. Next thing I hear is glass shattering and I see the thug holding a cutlass, he leans in to grab the drivers phone (he was charging it) and was reaching for my bag. I honestly don't know HOW my car got on the curb as there was no where else to turn to..But thank God we escaped, saw bags littered all over the ground.. Vandalized cars parked with no one inside.... My drivers hand bleeding.. Brings me to the point of this long story... We are not safe, no one is Safe. Either we accept it or not, Nigeria is in trouble! To think that was child's play compared to what people are going through in the North is terrifying. There was a time poverty was our only big problem, I strongly believe even the less privileged people will take being safe over anything right now. The numbers are disturbing! 20,200,500,2000!!! Killed in cold blood all because of what exactly?? Power? Religion? I love Nigeria.. No matter where I go I always miss home. How do we take our Nigeria back?? I want to be able to drive at night with my windows Down! | ||
| N3.8billion Bank Loan Gets Samuel Joseph Arrested By EFCC Posted: 12 Jan 2015 11:22 AM PST  A Lagos businessman, who allegedly diverted a N3.8billion loan secured from an old generation bank has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. Samuel Joseph, Managing Director of Vegefresh Company Limited, Rhema Doormart West Africa Limited, and Plywood and Chemicals Accessories was picked up this morning by operatives of the Commission in Lagos. The suspect is alleged to have collected N3,828,756,877.61 (Three Billion, Eight Hundred and Twenty Eight Million, Seven Hundred and Fifty Six Thousand, Eight Hundred Seventy Seven Naira, Sixty One Kobo) from the bank in tranches. He allegedly collected the sum of N2,000,000,000 (Two Billion Naira only) in February 2012 as loan through Vegefresh Company Limited ostensibly for the purpose of setting up a Tomato Processing Plant in Bauchi and Tomato Cannery in Badagry, Lagos, as well as Cassava factory in Ogun State. Another N1.5 billion was released to him under the Commercial Agriculture Credit Scheme Facility (CACS), while N500 million was released as NEXIM Bank's Rediscounting and Refinancing Facility (RFF) which accumulated to N3, 828,756,877.61 with interest. The bank alleges that the suspect deliberately diverted the funds for purposes other those intended as evidenced by inappropriate transfers made within and outside the bank. The suspect is also alleged to have collected a property worth N400 million on lease from bank, paid N100 million deposit and later demolished and sold the property before attempting to pay the balance of N300 million. At the point of paying the balance, the new management of the bank smelt a rat and rejected the payment. The bank later discovered that the suspect paid the initial deposit from the N100m loan he obtained from the same bank which he re-routed through accounts of companies that are his alter ego, back to the Bank's Assets Disposal Account. The original title to the property is still in the bank's possession, raising questions as to how the suspect sold the property. Investigation into the case continues. Wilson Uwujaren | ||

We have tried more Nigerians. More Nigerians have been jailed within this period after passing through due process. And I used to tell people, even if I try 10 million Nigerians and Jail 5 million Nigerians for corruption, that does not solve the corruption problem. So for you to solve corruption problems, you must use modern technologies to prevent people from stealing and that is what we are working on. The oil industry is a good area; we are working very hard. I just don't want to say certain things, because some of these people have been given so much money, they would do everything to stop us.
