My younger sister died of heart related ailment - Pres. Jonathan

Posted: 23 Jan 2015 12:52 PM PST

President Jonathan says his late younger sister, Mrs Nancy Oleic-Jonathan, who died on Jan. 4th, died of heart related ailment. The president made this known today while speaking at her funeral at Stephen's Anglican Church, Otuoke, Bayelsa State.
"Nancy that died was my immediate younger sister, though we were not from the same mother.I was very sad when she died because I knew she has been passing through pains for a very long time. Sometimes I felt God has been really kind to her. She started developing probems with her heart when I was deputy governor, then I started asking questions. I asked my personal physician where do we treat her. My doctor told me that the nearest place to treat her was Ghana. So I said we have so many teaching hospitals in Nigeria and none can attempt to work on a human heart. I was worried. But today I am happy that University of Ibadan is handling open heart surgery. We thank God she was able to live above the golden age of 50," Jonathan said.
Mrs Oleic-Jonathan was survived by a husband and six children.

Pics: Incredible moment man in suit takes on thief with a machete on London street

Posted: 23 Jan 2015 11:58 AM PST

The shocking pictures above taken by a member of the public shows the moment a suited City worker attempted to tackle a machete-wielding robber to the ground. Pedestrians looked on in horror as three masked raiders smashed their way into Carr Watches and Diamonds near Liverpool Street station in central London during a daytime robbery yesterday Jan. 22nd. As the gang tried to make their getaway on two mopeds, the have-a-go hero jumped onto the back of one of the robbers and tried to drag him to the ground. The raider then threatened the man with a long knife before running off into the busy streets. Two of the suspects got away from the jewellers while another was arrested nearby. (Source - UK Daily Mail) See the dramatic photos after the cut...

Pictures show the brave man running up behind the raider and attempting to tackle him to the floor

The man then jumps on the raider before retreating when he is threatened with a two-foot long machete - the robber then runs away

The man and a builder who came to his aid had to back off as the raider brandished a machete which he pulled from his trousers

Gov Fashola says he doesn't have his PVC yet; do you have yours?

Posted: 23 Jan 2015 11:57 AM PST

The Sultan of Sokoto told president Jonathan during his visit in the state that he's yet to get his PVC. Lagos State governor Raji Fashola also revealed yesterday that he's also yet to get his. During a rally in Ajeromi Local Government yesterday, he explained why;
"I have tried many times but I have not been able to get my PVC. Even the Sultan of Sokoto is yet to collect his PVC. I have been fighting them because of the shoddy way the voters registration went on in Lagos. I know that many people have not been able to get theirs, but I urge people not to relent. Everyone should go to the wards where they registered to get their PVCs. Even if you don't get it on the first day, do not relent till you get it." he said.

Bisi Alimi poses for Blanck Digital, says he can't come back home

Posted: 23 Jan 2015 09:08 AM PST

In an interview with Blanck Digital magazine, Nigerian gay activist, Bisi Alimi says he can't come to Nigeria because he's scared for his life. Bisi who came out as gay on National TV many years back has been living in the UK since 2007. Bisi says Homosexuality can be accepted in Africa as Africans are neither idiots nor senseless.
"Since I left Nigeria in 2007 I have never been back, it's not a safe place for me. It would be sheer foolishness on my part to go back to Nigeria after the failed attempt on my life or the ever ending run-ins I had with the police. It is one thing to be a maytr and another to live to fight another day and I think I would rather want to live so I can keep fighting.

Do you miss Lagos?
Do I miss Lagos? Do I miss Mushin? I will be lying if I said I don't. I really miss the fun I had as a child; I miss the buzz of living on the street and the fun of overcoming those unexpected dangers that come with living in a place like Mushin. I miss my friends, my families and the neighbourhood. However, I wont deny that in as much as I do miss Lagos and Mushin, I also realised that Lagos broke ties with me when I came out as gay and it was very hard then and even harder now to really relate to Mushin as home.
Can you go Home?
The simple answer is NO! Unless otherwise I want to take a risk and sometimes I have said myself, is it a risk worth taking? I am not sure I know the answer.
What has been the impact of your sexuality and your coming out been in Nigeria?
It has changed the conversation around same sex relationship and identity in Nigeria. The fact is, do your research and you find that prior to 2004 when I came out on New Dawn, there were hardly any conversations around such issues. A few months before my coming out, Obasanjo was busying spreading false messages about no homosexuals in Nigeria. To my recollection of things, that was the first time same sex issues were making mainstream news. The media were reporting it and it was really getting airwaves. However, there was a narrative that was missing. The narrative of the real people. We were considered invisible by Obasanjo and there was that need to create visibility. It was a great shock when on the morning of that October, a guy sat on the sofa with Funmi Iyanda and talked about being gay. I mean in Nigeria? Till today I still received emails from Nigerians saying I must be mad to have done that.
Today we have a law that criminalises same sex relationship in Nigeria. The law came into effect because I spoke up and others have not kept quiet since then. Whichever way we look at it, the act of 2004 changed the discourse in Nigeria.
Do you think homosexuality can be accepted in an African society?
Yes I do. I do because Africans are not idiots or senseless. It really angers me when in the discourse of accepting sexual orientation and gender identity that Africans are liken to some dangerous species. History in Europe as regards LGBT people is not that far away. I mean homosexuality was decriminalised in the UK just over 50 years ago. It is important to note that Nigeria was just coming out of colonial rules when Britain was decriminalising homosexuality. Now don't get me wrong, I am not making a case for homophobes in Nigeria or Uganda or any other part of Africa. What I am saying is, the question that generates a sense of hopelessness as regards LGBT rights in Africa is only playing to the irrational discourse that Africans are not rational people. We know that contrary is the case.
It is important to understand the impact post colonial religious movement is having on the continent. Yes, homosexuality will be accepted in Nigeria if we stick to the positive narrative of same sex relationships. If we step up the game and let Africans remember the basis of the African society, one built on the principles of "umbutu" and not on greed as perpetrated by religious entrepreneur who are constantly ruining the continent with the support of their politicians, who disregards democracy and the wish of the people.
It is not only homosexuality I see being accepted on the continent, I see good governance coming on as well. I see the people's wishes coming true. I see respect for women and girls. I see the end of marriage rape and child marriage. I see education becoming a right and not a privilege. I see healthcare being people orientated and I am see an Africa like David Diop said in "Africa", a continent "Whose fruit bit by bit acquires the bitter taste of liberty"

Meet the Nigerian woman who killed her white lover for cheating in 1953

Posted: 23 Jan 2015 07:46 AM PST

Ada Esther Johnson, popularly known back in the 50s as Ada Ocha Ntu pictured above with her lover, Mark Hall, whom she murdered in 1953 after she found out he'd used the 400pounds she loaned him for business, to go to England and marry an English bride. According to history, Mark used part of Ada's money to buy his new bride a car which she would use to start a transport business in the UK.

He returned to Nigeria and told Ada what he'd done with her money and a very furious Ada used a pair of scissor to stab Mark. Mark eventually died from injuries sustained from the attack.

Ada was tried and convicted in 1956 and was placed on death row at Broad Street Prison in Lagos. She was however pardoned by former head of state Chief Nnamdi Azikiwe, who changed her death sentence to life imprisonment in 1961.

Ayo Fayose warns APC and Buhari over attack on Pres. Jonathan

Posted: 23 Jan 2015 07:07 AM PST

Just got this press release. Read below...
Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has sounded a note of warning to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari over unprovoked attacks on the campaign train of President Goodluck Jonathan in some parts of the north.
The governor said; "We will no longer tolerate any orhestrated attack on Pesident Jonathan and supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party anywhere in the country."
Governor Fayose , who spoke through his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, said President Jonathan's humility and silence of must not be taken for granted.

He said Buhari should not allow desperation for power to lead him into throwing the north into another orgy of electoral violence  as he did when he lost the 2011 presidential election.
Governor Fayose said; "Having signed a pact to maintain peace before, during and after the elections, it was expected that Buhari would talk to his blood thirsty supporters to let peace reign.
"However, the orchestrated attacks on the campaign train of the president in Katsina and Bauchi States have shown that APC is not a party of peace and we are warning strongly that they must not put Nigeria on the spot.

"Most importantly, Buhari and his APC should tell us in plain language if what they want is to dismember this country, because nobody has monopoly of violence.
"They must stop taking the gentility and civility of President Jonathan as weakness because an attack on the President of a nation is an attack on the country and Buhari should know that he will never be President of Nigeria by intimidation and blood-letting.

"The APC candidate should therefore talk to his blood - thirsty supporters in the North to stop attacking the president, else they risk reprisal attacks from Nigerians in other parts of the country."

Nigerian parents left their twins, 9, alone in the US and traveled to Nigeria

Posted: 23 Jan 2015 06:54 AM PST

Nigerian parents, Jerusalem and Gladys Monday, have lost custody of their 9 yr old twins after they left them mostly to themselves in their New Hampshire apartment for four months and took their other three children to Nigeria. They left their twins in the care of an uncle who hardly visited. More of the story below from AP...
Manchester police said the uncle, 25-year-old Giobari Atura (pictured above), told them he would stop by every couple of days to drop off food, but when police got involved in November, they found no edible food in the refrigerator and only ramen noodles in a cabinet.
Atura was charged in December with one count of endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor. He was freed on $500 bail.
Atura's older brother, Jerusalem Monday, left for Nigeria with his wife and three of their children in July, intending to return in August. They told police they were delayed by illness and passport problems.
The door at their apartment was ajar Thursday, but no one answered a knock; a telephone listed in Jerusalem Monday's name was not receiving calls. A neighbor, Christaly Garcia, said she didn't recall seeing the boys but noted they wouldn't necessarily stand out because there are a lot of kids in the well-kept apartment complex in New Hampshire's largest city.
The case came to light in November when officials at the boys' school told the state Division of Children, Youth and Families that the twins had been living on their own for months. The kids were getting themselves up and on the bus, then eating breakfast and lunch at school.
The boys were taken into protective custody and then placed into foster care.
Assistant Hillsborough County Attorney Michael Valentine said the parents returned home shortly after they learned the boys were being left alone. Because they left them in the care of a relative, Valentine said, they won't be charged. The boys are back with their parents.
In a police affidavit, Atura said he'd stop by the apartment on days that he went to work, but that didn't happen every day. He said he checked on the boys three days a week and told them to call him if they needed anything.
"It should be noted that no operable phone was located within the apartment," the affidavit says.
In an interview with police, one of the boys said "he felt lonely while staying at their own house because his mom and dad were not there and nobody was with them," according to the affidavit.
When police finally reached the parents, they said they had instructed Atura to stay at the apartment, and if he couldn't, they gave him the name of a family friend to contact. The parents said they stayed in phone contact with Atura, who assured them everything was fine.
His phone number isn't listed. His lawyer, John Stanzel, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
