Nigerian soldiers reluctant to fight – US General

Posted: 17 May 2014 03:35 AM PDT

A US General on Thursday May 15th, said the Nigerian military is becoming afraid of engaging Boko Haram insurgents and this might affect the US level of involvement in finding the missing girls

Punch reports
Testifying on Thursday before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the US Air Force Chief of staff, Gen. Mark Welsh III, said, "We're now looking at a military force that is, quite frankly, becoming afraid to even engage. The United States doesn't have the capacity, the capability to go rescue every kidnapped person around the world."
The New York Times reported that the US might choose to minimize its involvement in the search for the over 200 schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram due to doubts over Nigeria's military capabilities. Continue...
Saturday PUNCH learnt that the US had questioned the ability of the Nigerian military to rescue the girls even with international help.

The Pentagon's Principal Director for African Affairs, Alice Friend, also said, "The Nigerian military has the same challenges with corruption that every other institution in Nigeria does. Much of the funding that goes to the Nigerian military is skimmed off the top, if you will."

US officials have also said that its involvement had also been made difficult because Nigerian officials ignored past warnings to soften brutal tactics that only fuelled the Boko Haram's insurgency.
At Thursday's Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, officials condemned the kidnappings and committed American aid to help rescue the girls. But they also expressed frustration at Nigeria's political and military leaders for failing to heed Washington's warnings about the extremist group.
"We have been urging Nigeria to reform its approach to Boko Haram," Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Robert Jackson, said.

He added, "From our own difficult experiences in Afghanistan and Iraq, we know that turning the tide of an insurgency requires more than force. The state must demonstrate to its citizens that it can protect them and offer them opportunity. When soldiers destroy towns, kill civilians and detain innocent people with impunity, mistrust takes root."

A retired Head of the US military's Africa Command, Gen. Carter Ham, said, "My sense is that US Government will remain in a supporting role to Nigeria. I do not think the U.S.G. will seek unilateral action."

The size of the Sambisa Forest is also believed to make the search for the girls difficult.
"We are basically searching for these girls in an area that's roughly the size of West Virginia, so it's a tough challenge, to be sure," state Department spokesman, Marie Harf, said on Thursday.

Find a statement from the school's PRO, Olusola Emiola, below
The protest by male students on campus on Wednesday 14, May 2014 had nothing to do with religion. A certain man, a non student was apprehended by our security personnel for trying to bring prohibited items into the school. After much interrogation, he mentioned the names of the culprits involved. An official went to the male hostel to get the students mentioned, one of whom was praying in the hostel. The students involved along with other students faced with student disciplinary committee cases took advantage of the interruption of prayers to start the protest.
The university properties worth millions were destroyed and this act was carried out by the male students. The students have been sent home on recess to resume back 2nd of June 2014.

Man dies digging grave to steal skull in Osun state

Posted: 17 May 2014 03:00 AM PDT

An unidentified young man in Ilobu community, in the Irepodun LGA of Osun State, was found head deep in a grave in the early hours of Wednesday May 14th, after allegedly attempting to cut off the head of a corpse, buried in Tonto compound in the area, Saturday Tribune reports
The suspect's accomplices fled in terror after seeing half his body get stuck mysteriously in the grave. His death has generated concern among the terrified residents of the Ilobu community.
It was gathered that the victim and his partners in crime allegedly came to Tonto compound in the early hours of Wednesday with a plot to exhume the corpse of an aged woman and sever her decomposed head, allegedly for ritual purposes. Continue...
A credible source in the community, who did not want to be named, told Saturday Tribune that "this particular corpse was buried five years ago and the suspected ritualist attended the burial in Ilobu."
He explained: "There are indications that he did not dig the grave alone. What we discovered is that he may have been attempting to cut off the head of the corpse when something suddenly hooked him as he managed to force half of his body into the grave to cut off the head.

"He got hooked and died on the spot, a development which possibly compelled other ritualists to run away from the scene so that they may not be affected by the mysterious thing that killed (their colleague)."
While commenting on how the residents of Ilobu got to know about the incident, since it happened in the wee hours, the source said a woman who was hawking ogi (a local corn meal) early in the morning of Wednesday spotted the torso of the suspect sticking out of the grave and raised the alarm.

"His corpse was discovered around 6.30am and his head was covered in mud. The residents here alerted the police division in Ilobu and they later came to evacuate the body and put it in their van before taking him away," he said.
Saturday Tribune was informed that the remains of the suspected ritualist were subsequently taken to and deposited at the mortuary of the Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital (LAUTECH), Osogbo, the state capital.

When contacted, the Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Mr Ibrahim Maishanu, said he was aware of the incident, and that the police would conduct investigation to determine what led to the suspect's death.

He said the police could not confirm that the suspect was a ritualist because of the circumstances surrounding the discovery of his corpse at a grave in Ilobu; that they would have to investigate the matter before giving any concrete information on the incident.

"Ex-convict Ibinabo not fit to lead AGN" - Clarion Chukwura

Posted: 17 May 2014 02:06 AM PDT

The beef between these two women is obviously not ending anytime soon. About a week after Actors' Guild of Nigeria president Ibinabo Fiberesima issued a statement addressing the constant attack from actress Clarion Chukwura, saying she was only trying to destabilize AGN, Clarion is not relenting and has fired back. In an interview with Punch today, Clarion said Ibinabo is an ex-convict and therefore not fit to lead AGN.
"I am not on the same level with Ibinabo professionally, educationally or in any other form. I find that she is deliberately misleading the public and wanting to push the issues at stake under the table with her so-called open letter. I will not allow her to do that.
"Item 'U' of the electoral guideline of AGN disqualified her. No convicted person can stand for election in any post. She was convicted for manslaughter and she was given a jail sentence which she served. There is a court injunction stopping Ibinabo from parading herself as the AGN president. This is the copy of the judgment. I have it. Manslaughter has no option of fine. Her sentence was reduced from seven years to five years and we all know she went to jail. The judgment reads in part, 'there is proof that she drove recklessly and caused the death of Dr. Sura Giwa contrary to the road traffic laws of Lagos State.' She was drunk. How could this person be the face of AGN?" Continue..
"The court injunction of 2011 and 2013 was forwarded to the presidency. The criminal conviction of manslaughter was sent to the presidency. The president is supposed to be a symbol of the supremacy of the rule of law. He disregarded the law in recognising Ibinabo as president of AGN. The president is now saying there is no law in this country. So the AGN has become an ethnic grouping. This is a professional body of actors. It is not a Niger Delta solidarity platform," she said.

The actress said she wouldn't have joined Ibinabo's party to Aso Rock even if she had invited her, saying,
"Some actors have even explained to me why they followed her. They said they were taken there on a fraudulent arrangement for her to use and get what she wanted. Would she really have approached me for a thing like that?"
Clarion alleged that Ibinabo had been going from one state government house to another to "beg" for money.
"I have the data of every government house she has been to. No single chapter has seen a dime for running the guild. She went to Ondo State and she was given N500, 000. What chapter did she inaugurate in Ondo State? The guild wasn't set up to go begging from one state government to another."
Clarion said Ibinabo couldn't have clocked 40 years as she claimed in her letter because,
"In 1989 when she was running Pyramid Club in Lagos, she was 22. How can she say 25 years later that she is just turning 40? I have known her a long time. I know what I am saying when I say she is not a professional actor."
When reminded that Ibinabo had featured in some movies, Clarion said,
"That is not what makes you a professional actor. You have market women in the East who have acted in one or two movies; that doesn't make them professional actors. I will be 35 years in this industry soon. This is the industry that has made me everything that I am. I will not stand by and watch it destroyed. People have placed their trust in me. I am an activist. People believe that I will bring justice to bear on this issue because I am afraid of nobody."
Concerning Ibinabo's allegation that Clarion just registered as a member of the guild few weeks ago, the veteran actor said,
"I joined the AGN in 2002. I was part of the process that brought in Zach Orji as the president of the guild and thereafter Ejike Asiegbu. When it was time for Ejike to leave, the whole thing degenerated. A caretaker committee was formed with KOK as the chairman and I as the vice Chairman. These are my identity cards. I even have a membership certificate which was signed by Segun Arinze who was the national president and Ifeanyi Dike as the BOT chairperson.
"I went to pay N5000 into the guild's account as my dues for this year. She should provide any proof showing that I just got registered."
Clarion also used the opportunity to fire back at Ifeanyi Dike, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the guild who she claimed had maligned her in some publications recently.
"The BOT led by Ifeanyi Dike has been the same board since the incorporation in 1999. According to the constitution, they were to serve 10 years and leave for a new board to replace them. People had become aware that the BOT members are not men of integrity and the guild wasn't moving forward.
"They refused to leave and a court injunction was obtained in 2011. I have a copy of the injunction as you can see. The court injunction prevented them from holding any election. But they ignored the injunction and allowed themselves to be financially induced by Ibinabo to run for the election."
Clarion said she wasn't attacking Ibinabo just because she (Clarion) wants to contest for the AGN presidency.
"The first step is the dissolution of the BOT. When the time for election comes, there are several credible people who are prepared to run for the post. I will give my support to any credible candidate who wants the viability of every chapter. I will pass my plans and ideas to that person. It is not about me wanting to be president. I will gladly work and support the new person in an advisory role."

Made-in-Nigeria vehicles to roll out next month – FG

Posted: 16 May 2014 03:01 PM PDT

Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Samuel Ortom has revealed the Federal Government's plans to roll out made-in-Nigeria vehicles into the market next month, June 2014. The Minister made this known when he received a delegation from Automobile Peugeot, France in his office in Abuja, Punch reports.

The minister, while addressing the delegation which included the company's Vice President, Mr. Yves Moulin, said the newly introduced auto policy is quite effective and is attracting automobile brands to establish assembly plants in Nigeria. Continue...
"The automotive policy is derived from the National Industrial Revolution Plan, and we are happy with the response we have been getting from the automotive industry worldwide; and with your coming, it shows that this policy is working. When the policy was introduced, people criticised it and most of them do not understand the benefit of the policy. We have had several stakeholders from the automotive industry approaching us to set up assembly plants and spare parts plants in the country. I want to assure up you on behalf of the government that we will do everything to make sure the policy succeeds." the minister said
Meanwhile the first set of Peugeot cars assembled here in Nigeria would be reeled out next month, says Managing Director, Peugeot Automobile Nigeria Limited, Mr Ibrahim Boyi. He said this was made possible due to the Auto policy placed by the government.

Father of Nyanya bomber detained by SSS

Posted: 16 May 2014 02:36 PM PDT

Rtd Col Agene Ogwuche, the father to the alleged mastermind of the April 14th Nyanya bomb blast Aminu Sadiq Ogwuche, has been arrested and detained by the officials of the Department of State Security for failing to meet up with the 2011 bail conditions given to him when he bailed his son after he was arrested on suspicion of terrorism.

Explaining why he had to be arrested and detained when it was his son that allegedly committed the crime, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police, Frank Mba said;
"We don't run a system where the sins of the son are visited on the father or the sins of the father are visited on the son. The obligation of the father as at the time he took Sadiq on bail was to continue to produce Sadiq whenever he is needed until the case against Sadiq is finally disposed of. If he fails to discharge that responsibility, that on its own does not confer the status of a terror suspect on him. He has only breached the conditions of the bail and he will be brought to justice in accordance with the conditions of the bail. That explains why the DSS immediately took him in when he could not produce the son. And that is the farthest we can go. If he had signed a bond to forfeit a property or to forfeit a certain sum of money, he will be made to suffer the forfeitures but we cannot visit the sins of the father on the son." he said
Sadiq, who was born in the UK, was arrested on May 14th in Sudan. He is expected to be extradited to Nigeria once the formal process for his transfer back to Nigeria is completed

Man arrested for blackmailing women with their nude videos

Posted: 16 May 2014 01:50 PM PDT

32 year old Iweka Nnamdi who claims to be a graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University has been arrested by the Lagos Police command for allegedly blackmailing and forcefully extortiing money from unsuspecting female victims, Vanguard reports.

Nnamdi used multiple Facebook profiles, where he impersonates notable persons in the society such as the Secretary to the State Government Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, House of Rep Speaker Aminu Tambuwal, Michael Adenuga, actor Van Vicker and a host of others, to deceive unsuspecting victims.

Through the fake profiles, the suspect would announce contract advertisement as well as job vacancies to his followers and then invite only the female applicants for a supposed interview at a hotel location where he would pose as the Personal Assistant to the Prominent Nigerian who owns the job or contract. Continue...
Nnamdi in the course of the supposed interview would then demand for sex from these ladies, some of whom may be married. Unknown to those who would agree to his demands, Nnamdi would have setup a camcoder where he would record all their sexual activities and nudity. He would afterwards use the clips from the recorded video to torment his victims, threatening that he would post the video and nude photos on the internet if they don't meet his financial demands.
Luck however ran out on him when he posted the nude pictures of an Enugu state born lady who refused to give him the N20,000 he demanded.

A policeman from Area J in Ajah Lagos, explained;
"The suspect met a female banker (names withheld)on facebook where he posed as one of the big shots in Nigeria. After chatting with her for sometime, he invited her to a hotel in Ajah on March 14, 2014, where he slept with her . Unknown to the lady, a camp coder was placed in a corner of the hotel room, where all that transpired was recorded. He later abandoned the lady while she was sleeping. Next day, the lady called him on the phone, saying she was no longer interested in the relationship. But Iweka would not agree. Rather, he sent her his GTB account details asking her to pay in some money which she refused. But to her chagrin, Iweka posted her nude picture on internet , on April 15, 2014,which prompted her to report the case to the Police. We used the lady as a bait to get him by asking her to call him on the phone and book for an appointment with him in a hotel at Ikota in order to settle the case. And when he came we apprehended him. During investigation, we discovered he is not in any way related to any of these persons he claimed to represent. When we conducted a search in an apartment at Road 34, Ikota villa estate in Ajah, where he squats with his elder sister's husband, we found the laptop he uses for these atrocities. Stored in, were video of several women in their nude, including that of the banker. We also found black berry phones with same pictures stored in. During interrogation, he said he only used such means to get beautiful ladies and also make some money. His victims included bankers, students in the different universities and married women. For the married women, he tells them to bid for contracts. From our acount, he has destroyed about fourteen marriages, by posting pictures of the women who turned down his blackmail, on the internet"
Iweaka has been charged to court on an eight- count charge ranging from impersonation, publication of provocative pictures, threat to life, conduct likely to cause the breach of peace, obtaining under false pretense and threat with intent to extort. The first hearing for his case was heard on April 28th where he pleaded not guilty. He was granted bail of N200,000 with two sureties. The case comes up for hearing again May 26th.
