'I can't deliver your letter to Boko Haram leader' - First Lady tells kids Posted: 27 May 2014 01:48 PM PDT Some Nigerian children who paid a courtesy visit to First Lady Patience Jonathan today in Abuja to mark the Children's Day celebration seized the opportunity to hand her letters they wrote to Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau protesting the abduction of the Chibok girls and asked the First Lady to pass the letter to him. Mama Peace received the letter but immediately told the children that she doesn't know who Shekau is but would give their letters to the Chief of Defence Staff who would help deliver it accordingly.."Let me thank the children that gave me letter to give Boko Haram. Well, I have received your letter, but I'm not the one to give it to Boko Haram because I don't know Boko Haram and I have never seen Boko Haram. But I will give it to NSA or Chief of Defence Staff who will submit your letter accordingly. To my children parliament, thank you for your letter. Thank you for your deliberation. I have received what you gave to me. I will make sure I pass it to the president because it is addressed to him and the other one is addressed to Boko Haram. That is why the two are different." she said "It is bad to abuse our country and the president because God has made him the head. The almighty God commands us to pray for our leaders. We therefore need to pray for the development of our country and the president. Remember that a child that abuses his father and mother is disobeying God's commandment because the bible says in Exodus 20:12 that you should honour your father and mother so that you may live long in the land that the Lord your God has given you. The holy Bible is not referring to only biological parents. Any one that is older than you even for a day must be respected. Let us therefore join hands and rebuild our country Nigeria" she advised |
Ozzy Bosco lands LAWMA ambassadorship, releases theme song 'Keep Lagos Clean' Posted: 27 May 2014 01:49 PM PDT The Wonderkd "OzzyBosco" is on another level! This time, the sensational kid artiste is here for a fantastic reason and it's a special gift for the children on their day. It is a mind-blowing song by the 7yrold kid OzzyBosco titled "Keep Lagos Clean" the official theme song for the Lagos State Cleanliness Revolution campaign. In an era where it has become customary for corporate players to use celebrities to drive their brands to consumers, one such organization that has deeply looked inwards for a truly value-adding relationship with a celebrity artiste is LAWMA. Continue... The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) led by the Managing Director, Mr Ola Oresanya on Monday 5th May 2014 endorsed the kid dynamite; OzzyBosco Wonderkid as her Brand Ambassador. The artiste is to use his vantage position as African's number 1 kid star to complement their environmental cleanliness drive through his pet project "KEEP LAGOS CLEAN" Cleanliness Revolution …children Lead, Adults Follow; a cleanliness campaign which targets children within Lagos and its environ. OzzyBosco and Lagos State children are about to swing into action in a cleanliness campaign tagged "Keep Lagos Clean". His primary assignment is to carry along our younger generations to inculcate in them a deep-rooted sense of responsibility towards cleanliness in their homes, schools and public places. Guided by their idol OzzyBosco Wonderkid, they will serve as Change Agents in the on-going fight against filth and environmental pollution in Lagos State. OzzyBosco will also be partnering with the Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas (LCDA), which would ensure that schools and children in their locality participate fully in the campaign exercise. The communities within the Local Government Area in focus shall be selected at random and replicated in allthe LGAs and LCDAs in Lagos State. LAWMA endorsement makes it the second brand ambassadorial appointment for the "Tinini"crooner in about six months, having been made "Tigo Milk Brand Ambassador" (CWAY Foods and Beverages) only a few months ago. It is worthy of note that OzzyB won the Kids Got Talent Competition at the tender age of four in November 2011 and has since continued to amaze the entertainment industry with his stage craft, record- breaking achievements and steadfastness; making him the most vibrant kid artiste in Africa. Last summer, he became the first and only artiste to sponsor 14 children (mainly orphans) on a one-week all-expense paid educational and fun filled holiday to Tinapa, Cross River State where they were warmly received by the State Government (31st August – 6th September, 2013). And despite being a full time pupil, he has to date done 128 well-recorded scintillating stage performances in 2½ years, carted home 16 reputable awards and 2 ambassadorial endorsements. On the high point, OzzyBosco, witnessed and cheered by a mammoth crowd became the youngest in the industry to receive the exclusive chieftaincy title of "OMENANWATA IGBO" (A Young Achiever) from the Igbo High Chiefs in Lagos State. Photos: Doctors protest at FMC Owerri over unpaid wages Posted: 27 May 2014 06:34 AM PDT Doctors at Federal Medical Centre Owerri today protested over unpaid wages and said they will soon embark on indefinite strike. The doctors complained that the FMC management has formed a habit of not paying salaries and entitlements, and with so many deductions when they eventually pay. Someone in the know said the residents haven't been paid September 2013 salary. The house officers who worked for 3 months received payment for only two months with so many deductions. They say this is not fair considering the health hazards they are exposed to on a daily basis and the fact that they are always away from their families on call only to have their salaries cut in half. Photo: Ex-governor Peter Obi in India to visit Prof. Dora Akunyili Posted: 27 May 2014 05:38 AM PDT Find a statement posted on Professor Dora Akunyili's Facebook page below Immediate past Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, is presently in India on a visit to see former Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili, who is receiving treatment in the country. Mr. Obi left for India yesterday in company of his media aide, Mr. Valentine Obienyem. The two men confirmed in a message from India that Prof. Akunyili is responding to treatment and that her situation is nothing near the scary picture being painted by rumour mongers.Prof. Dora Akunyili's husband, Dr. Chike Akunyili, confirmed to me on phone this morning that Messrs Obi and Obienyem are with them in the hospital. "We are very happy to see them. We are even happier that they have volunteered to spend the entire day with us before returning home to Nigeria," Dr. Akunyili said. He also expressed appreciation to Nigerians, saying: "We can never thank Nigerians enough; their prayers are working." The attached photo shows Ex-Governor Obi discussing with the doctors treating Dora, while her husband watches. Below is an e-mail sent from India this morning by Obienyem: "Brother Isaac, I am sending this mail from the hospital where our beloved Prof. Dora Akunyili is being treated. At the moment, her husband, Dr. Chike Akunyili, Mr. Peter Obi and the team of Doctors treating her are rubbing minds. "While Doctors at the Indian hospital are explaining what they are doing and how tremendously she has improved; Dr. Chike Akunyili thanked them for their commitment to duty. He also expressed gratitude to Nigerians for the outpouring of love showered on his wife. Mr. Obi emphasised the need for Indians to come and set up facilities in Nigeria and for Nigerian Doctors to also show commitment to expanding the health facilities in Nigeria through strategic investment. Though the Doctors said they come to the country now and then, they agreed on the need to consider what Obi said seriously. They promised to keep communications open. "Obi thanked God for the tremendous improvement of Prof. Akunyili and said the reality he saw was the direct opposite of the grim picture some people painted about her condition. He prayed to God to grant her total healing. "In Nigeria, it is common for Nigerians to express secret and sometimes open excitement whenever any highly placed Nigerian suffer. They see it as delayed punishment for the iniquities they foisted on the nation. Prof. Dora Akunyili is different. Since the news of her sickness was broken, the entire nation has been crying and praying for her to be healed. Even on social networks, you see people's writings dripping with tears for a woman who showed the nation what service in the truest sense of the word means. "Nigerians as a people suffer from forgetfulness that is inexplicable. We forget people's deeds so easily. Again, Dora is different. The pervasiveness of her good work ensured that it is etched permanently in the psyches of our people. Who in Nigeria today has forgotten the trauma – attacks upon attacks – that Dora was faced with simply for doing what was best for Nigeria and humanity? "I understand that since being in the hospital, Nigerians in India have turned the hospital into a Mecca of sort. Daily they visit to pray for her recovery. I understand that the Nigerian Ambassador to India came calling yesterday. "Meanwhile, Mr. Obi and the team of Doctors are discussing many subjects. Having finished with health, the secret of the development of the health institution and the part the Government is playing, he is busy asking them the secret of the development of Karnataka, the State in India, where Bangalore city/town is located. He wants to know the secret behind the development in infrastructure, education, social services, among others as to compare note with what are witnessed in Nigeria." Isaac Umunna Media Adviser to Prof. Dora Akunyili Lagos, May 27, 2014 |

Regina Askia writes on the Nigerian woman and societal pressure Posted: 27 May 2014 01:26 AM PDT Former beauty queen/actress Regina Askia Williams wrote an interesting piece about the Nigerian woman and the societal pressures and demands placed on her and shared it on her Facebook page. It's an interesting read. Find it below... I just read a social media fight between two people I know and I chuckle to myself because my friend was blowing some hot words there - she was really vexed. Reading through the literary missiles, a few questions came to mind. Why is it that, generally when Nigerians fight their profanity centers around a woman's marital status, her age and to top off the insults, her private parts? Are these the yardsticks that we measure our women by? The marital status thing. Does it mean when a woman is not married she has no identity, she is less of a person or what? For a Nigerian woman to get any type of respect there has to be a man in the picture in what ever capacity? So it does not matter if you are wife number 6 at least you are wife? There is a vulgar saying that goes "Toto wey nobody get, na everybody get am". For real? That pretty much means that a woman unattached is nothing but a mobile body part that anyone can do anything to or with.....chaaii!! The age factor. - Another sexist point of view. With notion of the one goal she must accomplish , the female now believes young and juicy is preference especially if you are at the other side of the biological clock and still have not found a man. So some of my soul sisters have designed a calibration where at 30. birthdays are celebrated every 3 years and at 40 every 4 years. Meaning if you are 30 you will turn 31 after 3 years ......so instead of kicking the other side of 40s with me my friends are mostly still 38. Where we could have fabulous and very accomplished women, celebrating milestones, sharing wisdom of lessons learned over the years, we have we see strong women dumbing down, hiding behind numbers, and an arsenal of paraphernalia that will ensure they don't get old. Look at any photographs of big chicks at any event, we all look bothered. Why? Shoes are biting, wigs are squeezing, body magic trying to snuff out the last breath. Sometimes we are dropping body parts, nails dropping , eye lashes hanging........Lord have mercy. Check out the Louboutins, Louis Vuittons, Micheal Kors, name them, all in competition with the other as we live out social constructs designed to forever keep us mentally emotionally and even physically impoverished (How? Story for another day). We need to love and accept ourselves. Finally, the woman's private parts. The immediate way to gauge a persons mental quality is how he talks about a woman. It has nothing to with swag, bragado or just being a bad boy, a man who refers to a woman as a body part is quite simply an iIDIOT no if , ands, or buts, just keep it moving. I find it very disturbing that of the myriad of problems in Nigeria, there recently was a move to put in the constitution the legality of underage marriage as opposed to making laws against pedophiles. Its disturbing that what an individual decides to do with their private parts became a matter of national debate and outcry but HIV, malaria, food shortage and Ebola (currently knocking on our doors) are decimating the populace. These attitudes and perceptions of put out or shut up, money for hand back for ground are slowly turning our princess daughters into sex slaves, our turning our sisters and mothers into glorified prostitutes. If you have ever watched a pack of animals - you notice that they eat, fight, mate and sleep. The more highly evolved the animal in question the more organized their activities and interactions with group members. If this is our national psyche, then the women of Nigeria have a long road to walk because we must declare this consciousness unacceptable. This is not who we are and we can do better. We must point our daughters towards higher ideals and goals. We need a mind reorientation and perception which must begin with an honest look at the person in the mirror. Our men must once again learn to respect womanhood. Merit ought to take its place once again. Lets us as a people rise again. Where do we start?? |
